      Album Description

Recorded live in the studio, this CD captures the essence of the Curvature Quartet the brilliant saxophonist Calder Spanier (Charlie Hunter Quartet fame). Mind-blowing improvisational interplay, unusual rhythms, and instrumental virtuosity combine to a highly original and progressively funky acoustic jazz sound. The ensemble includes Jack West on acoustic guitar, Calder Spanier on soprano and alto saxophones, Joel Davel on marimba, and well-known Bay Area drummer Ricky Carter performing on his hybrid percussion/drum kit, with a appearance by Brian Hill on guitar. Carving out new territory in the world of acoustic sounds that you can actually to without hurling, Big Comet Headed Earth steers completely clear of the "smooth jazz" and "out jazz" population centers. This is real, creative music played by four people live in the studio.

5 out of 5 stars Music I've waited my whole life to hear..........2001-01-12

When I first heard "Big Comet Headed for Earth" by Jack West and Curvature, it seemed like it came from nothing I've ever heard before and was written directly for me. It is one of the freshest, sexiest, most exhuberant, and musically brillant CD's I've ever heard. The latest release, "Big Ideas", proves that West's compositions and concepts have only grown deeper, more soulful and sophisticated while the individual and ensemble playing has reached masterful heights.

        Album Description

Glide is the brainchild of Will Sergeant (of Echo & The Bunnymen), a man regarded by many to be one of the most influential guitarists of the last three decades. Since "Weird As Fish" in 1978, Sergeant has released a flood of limited edition solo EPs and albums, but this is the first one to feature proper chord changes

"Curvature Of The Earth" was recorded at Sergeant's own studio, The Pod in Lancashire, over a 4 week period with engineers Dave Buchanan and Mike Hunter. Sergeant, who plays all the instruments on the album, picked the final eleven tracks from over seventy compositions he had stored on his computer, and spent a day completing each one.

This is Will's best solo work. Much more accessible than the interesting but very weird "Themes for Grind". Work by the Serpents is also fun. Somewhat reminds me of the dreamy-groovy work with "Skyray", but more realized. And yes, can't the Bunnymen just have Will put out some work like this and ship it over for Mac to lay on the vocals? All Nuevo Bunnymen-- Evergreen, "...Life", Flowers-- have their share of catchy tunes and high points, but this work by Glide shows you that even more is possible. Thank you Will for all the great work.

4 out of 5 stars Ian- let Will write the next Echo & Bunnymen album!.......2004-12-28

with a bit of stronger porduction this would be a five star effort. It rides along like a soundtrack for a modern sci-fi flick with a theromen at times and the Hong Kong film Chu-king Express at others with moments of tranquilty dropped here and there. The opening track of A Golden Dawn almost has a (Echo) Killing Moon feel, while Chopped Hog has the basics of a T. Rex with Hammond organ feel with a bit of Gary Glitter sprinkled on top before fading to a simple piano riff. Rotation 1 returns to the Middle eastern vibe and piano and kicks into a strong beat.
If Echo and The Bunnymen were putting stuff like this out with just a little more umph! (perhaps John Leckie producing?) they would be as relevant today as they were in the 80s.
