Customer Reviews:
The Most Beautiful Recorded Tenor Voice?.......2005-06-22
Is any recorded, tenor, singing voice as lovely as Kenny Baker's? As a child, I often heard him during the 1930s on the Jack Benny show, but have scarcely thought of him since. Amazon.com offers him on four CDs: BABES IN TOYLAND, LOVE WALKED IN, THE STARLIT HOUR and WEILL FROM BERLIN TO BROADWAY. Over the years, I have heard the recorded voices of many tenors, mostly operatic. Their fine voices were excellently trained, often to a wider range and more difficult music. But note for note, their sound as recorded is not I think as sheerly beautiful as Kenny Baker's. A splendid, unspoiled, unstrained, natural gift, put to disciplined and tasteful use! His enunciation is remarkably clear, and his musical line, perfectly smooth. He makes each song a different story, as in the six pieces here from BABES IN TOYLAND.
My claim is easy to test. This website has CDs with excerpts for listening to the best tenors of the 20th century, including Enrico Caruso, John McCormack, Giovanni Martinelli, Beniamino Gigli, Tito Schipa, Richard Tauber, Richard Crooks, Jussi Bjoerling, Morton Downey, Mario Lanza, Giuseppe di Stefano, Nicolai Gedda, Jan Peerce, Leopold Simoneau, Fritz Wunderlich, Luciano Pavarotti, Placido Domingo and Jose Carreras. Of course, the earlier the career, the greater the damage to the recorded voice from primitive technology. Heard live, who knows which voice was most beautiful? But at least we have what earlier centuries could only imagine: lasting copies of live performances. Listen to Kenny Baker's voice on tracks 2 and 8 of BABES IN TOYLAND, and then compare.
The numbers from THE RED MILL will make you want to hear more. This operetta, also composed by Victor Herbert, was first produced in 1906, three years after BABES IN TOYLAND. "Moonbeams" (well sung by Eileen Farrell) is lovely; "Because You're You" (a duet between Farrell and Felix Knight) is quite simple but surprisingly affecting. The last two are the best: "Every Day Is Ladies' Day with Me," and "In Old New York." They are patter songs, perhaps inspired by, and surely as deft, as the ones that Gilbert and Sullivan were writing two decades earlier. Both are sung by Wilbur Evans, in a rich baritone, with perfect enunciation and marvelous comic flair. Great fun!
The selections on this CD were recorded in 1944 and 1945, then released in 1946 on both 78s and 10" LPs. For this CD, they were remastered from wartime lacquered-glass originals. Baker and Evans emerge in radiant form, surely much closer to live sound than reached our family radio via AM transmission 65 years ago. The orchestral and choral sound is less attractive. Poorly miked?
Very, very truncated........2002-12-09
The scores of Victor Herbert's "Babes in Toyland" and "The Red Mill" are lovely classics, but the incomplete scores represented by this Decca Broadway remastering of its antiquated 78s are not the best reprentation. My advice: wait for the John McGlinn "Babes in Toyland" to be released. As for "The Red Mill", you'd do better to pick up the Ohio Light Opera's double-CD from Albany Records.
incomplete pleasure.......2002-11-09
Two terrible mistakes keep this from 5 stars.. BABES IN TOYLAND is not complete as they are missing the delightful IN THE TOYMAKER'S WORKSHOP. Why? In THE RED MILL they use a butchered take of EVERY DAY IS LADIES DAY WITH ME. Again, why?
John McGlinn will be out with a complete BABES soon - and there is a lot of music in it - so you may want to wait.
Finally available on CD!.......2002-08-01
Decca's 1946 album of selections from Victor Herbert's celebrated musical was a welcome addition to record libraries, covering most of the major songs plus some of the delightful dance music. The album was reissued as a ten-inch Lp in 1949. A later reissue in 1957 dropped 4 songs to fit the score on one side of a twelve-inch Lp backed by six selections from Herbert's THE RED MILL. That pairing is reproduced here but the CD contains the complete BABES IN TOYLAND program! It's nice to have it back too! Nice of Decca to give us this early Christmas present this year. But BABES IN TOYLAND is a score that enchants all year round. How strange that no other complete recording exists.
The six selections form THE RED MILL offer a nice bonus, and the selections are well sung.

In perspective these are some of the most popular songs of their time. I enjoy the historical value of songs from the past. Hearing someone sing about things you may have only learned from a history book, makes it more real.

Customer Reviews:
Sounds like a matured Hilary Duff..........2007-06-26
I purchased this cd because one of my friends recommend Katy Rose and of the few songs I'd heard, I loved them. However, when I bought the cd, I was slightly dissapointed. Sure, a few of the songs are really great but a few, especially "Watching The Rain" sound like Hilary Duff slightly matured. Though without those few songs and a little more into the lyrics, Katy Rose could really be something and not just one of those one hit wonders and definitely not a Hilary Duff sound a like. I give this cd a 7/10.
Here's To Hoping.......2006-07-15
Katy Rose's debut "Because I Can" has been highly overlooked but is brilliant nonetheless in its artistic, poetic display of both despondency and hope. The entire album glows with promise for Katy Rose's future and the artistic genius it encompasses on its own as a single record. The beautiful depth and introspection Katy lets us in on is riveting and relatable as the music and lyrics jut straight from her heart while not appearing pretentious.
Katy starts the album off with the enjoyable and radio-ready (though naturally a little hollow) singles "Overdrive" and "I Like", and follows with the affecting, burdened pining of "Watching the Rain" and "Enchanted".
Next up is the angst-ridden "Catch My Fall", which most will find they have to acquire a taste for. The subsequent "Snowflakes" is probably the dip in the album, too slow for its own good as it comes across as one long yarn.
The best is yet to come, however, and Katy quickly redeems herself with "Glow", a dejected yet hopeful song that contains some of the most poetic and reflective lyrics of the album, and is my personal favorite. She follows this with the equally hopeful and even more poetic "Teaching Myself To Dream" and the angry but delightfully self-sardonic "Vacation".
After this comes Katy at her most impressionable with the deep yearning of "Original Skin", featuring a beautiful mix of acoustic guitar, bongo, and violin. Katy further displays her incredible talent at writing in the poignant and entirely arresting "Lemon", and ends the album with the despondent, pensively hopeful "Because I Can".
When all is said and done, Katy Rose has presented us with a truly striking and stirring debut. The entire album resonates with emotional intensity and artistry. Here's to hoping we will be seeing more of this incredibly talented artist in the near future.
shameful.......2006-06-03
I find Katy Rose offensive. It would be okay to be banal and unoriginal in your songwriting. I would find no fault in producers and songwriters pushing a young girl into the music industry. Hey, maybe she'll pick up some money for college. Clearly someone wants this girl to get a piece of the anti-britney action. Her songs are basically junior high journal fodder. It is obvious that the lyricson this abum are strung together to give the audience the impression that she is a "bad girl" they are meant to make you believe that rose is a jaded, serious artist with REALLY SHINY HAIR! I am assuming that the topics referenced in these songsare meant to have associative power. That's fine, I guess. Taste is subjective, and making crap is no crime. What I find offensive is that she has used someone elses tragedy to add a touch of, I guess, "Dark Glamour" to what is otherwise a pretty non-sensical song. The song I am speaking of is OVERDRIVE. ergggh. the lyric:
I'm six feet under the Bhodi Tree
With my crap new-age philosophy
Diamonds where there once were stars
I'm sittin in Jayne Mansfield's car.
Jayne Mansfield is an actress who died in an absolutley horrific car crash in 1967, when her car crashed into an insecticide truck killing her and two traveling companions. Adding to the horror, MAnsfields children were asleep in the backseat of the car. Mansfield's daughter grew up to be an actress as well: Mariska Hargitay from Law and Order SVU. When I heard KAty Rose's song I didn't pay much attention to it. I thought it was just another song spit out into the universe that everyone will hear and than forget. The Mansfield lyric kills me however. Everyone in Rose's camp is trying to make a buck. That much is obvious. I just don't understand why they feel the need to rape someone elses personal tragedy in order to get there. Whoever produced this song should feel pretty disgusted with themselves. And as for Rose, I don't know if her angst (teen or otherwise) is real, but I really hope it isn't related to having been there to watch a close relative die, and should she suffer that misfortune, I sincerely hope noone ever talks about it on a song that plays during the mean girls dvd menu. That would be pretty disrespectful.
"I keep on dreaming because i can...".......2006-05-21
Katy Rose's debut album, Because I Can is a breath of fresh air. Rose is a wonderful songwriter, her talent is obvious in her first single, Overdrive. I love that song so much, "I like the light and hate the heat but I'll lick the blood right off your street." The song Lemon appears in the film Thirteen which is also on this great album. Another standout tracks include: Snowflakes, Enchanted, Because I Can, Watching the Rain, Vacation, and Orginal Skin. She shows tremendous potential on Orginal Skin, "I'm outside let me in I'm still shedding my orginal skin..." The best song is Snowflakes, mellow and moody, a pure classic, "I close my eyes to feel the cold on the palm of my blue hand..." I can't wait til she releases her next album. Rose is a true and raw artist. Just listen to the song Vacation, "I've lost all sense of navigation but got my Californication..." Don't wait buy this album!
Great Album.......2006-05-11
This is a great album--the pace is very driven and the lyrics are smart and catchy. I especially liked the fast paced and intense Watching the Rain. I look forward to more good works from Katy.

American Music.......2005-10-17
Ferde Grofe's best known Grand Canyon Suite is presented here with a host of Victor Herbert music, both serious and light.
The five-movement suite takes a picturesque tour through the typical day in the southwest American desert. While not a difinitive rendition, this recording holds up well against "classic" recordings of yore, with even better sonics.
The Victor Herbert symphonic poem Hero and Leander, is also music which guides the listener through a story. This performance comes off pretty well; the music isn't terribly memorable, but it has its exciting moments and it is interesting to hear some little-known, turn-of-the-century, highly Romantic American music.
Also on the CD is a medley of Herbert's greatest show tunes, including probably his most famous March of the Toys from Babes in Toyland. This medley gives 10 hits from various shows, all charming in their own right, and showing early influences of Leroy Anderson and Henry Mancini even.
While the performances here are very good, and the music is keen to listen to, nothing really blew me away. Especially since Naxos has released some excellent all-Grofe CD's of his suites at a budget price. If you really want the Herbert, don't hesitate to buy this CD, but if you only want the Grofe, I suggest you look somewhere else.
The Recording Technician should be shot!.......2000-12-21
This was played very well, but why do I have to listen to Trucks driving by outside the auditorium? With about a week of waveform editing this has become the best recording of this material I have ever heard. I record professionally and I feel that it is as much an art as the musicians performace. It could have at least had some post editing. 10 stars for the preformace and a minus 7 stars for the pre and post production work not done.
melodies for nostalgy.......1999-10-18
It was a long time ago, in Spain, I heard from a cassete this work of Grofé. The music struck me til now as something imponderable, sweet and romantic, nostalgic and strong, feeling me with the smells of the desert, but with a remarkable quality. It was 30 yers ago. I tried several times to find the music but unsucessfully. It was like to walk back in time, in a kingdom of peace and love. I am amazed to find it in Amazon.

Product Description
Recorded in May of 2000 at Tiger Recording in Sydney, Australia, "As I Am" is a collection of songs from the heart. Poignant and magical, this record has been described as brutally honest and heartfelt . In the weeks leading up to her departure from Australia to move to New York City, Karen Jacobsen was in the studio being vulnerable and creating an intimate expression of love and loss, with an underlying sense of hope.
Customer Reviews:
Exquisitely Endearing.......2007-06-24
Karen Jacobsen's 2000 set "As I Am" was recorded in Sydney, Australia. Australian Jacobsen has worked in New York extensively. Her piano-based melodies float with her soft emotional voice. On this EP the songs range from the hopeful and joyous "Finally Found My Home" to the worried lover on "If You Left Me." "I thought you loved me, I thought we had a plan, but it seems you couldn't love me as I am," she sings on sad breakup title track. The CD opener "Don't Miss You" is hauntingly catchy, "Love doesn't last forever; I can't change the way I don't feel, I can't pretend something that's not real; I won't say words so untrue." On "The River of My Life" Karen reflects back on her life & discovers change is needed, "I want to be somewhere else, doing something else with somebody else." There is an unaccredited seventh track "I Can't Change" that adds a drummer with a small band. It's a good track about a person realizing that they're better off moving on from a relationship that didn't work. Karen's angelic voice sings of loves lost & found. Her melodies are simple & exquisitely endearing. Enjoy!
Good music.......2006-09-24
This music I listen to! I listened to everybody but I like this the best. Everyone is too mean and I love Karen because she seems like a good person.
She can really sing, really sing and seems like a real person who I could talk to. I listen to her all of the time.
I am her biggest fan in the world.

Simply Stunning.......2002-06-23
While on vacation in Manhattan, I stumbled into a bar feeling a little melancholy and heard the most sublime music. Piano and voice has never sounded so rich and stirring, and what a voice Karen has. I can honestly say (as a huge fan of female singer-songwriters) that she has the purest voice I've ever heard. Each song somehow reaches you in ways you can't fathom, and I left that bar feeling lifted, soothed and lucky to have chanced upon her talent.
You must buy this.

Album Description
Music is an element the world has never had to live without. Which is why Lyrikal Ehterians have already established themselves as boundery breakers, having already built a house for Hip-Hopera on their 2001 debut, "Immortality." Thus brings us the reason for introduction to L.E.'s sophomore effort, "L.E. Mental." With it's Box Office Movie-like theme, this can be considered renaissance material for old and new hip hop lovers alike. A far cry from its underground-friendly predecessor, it is evident that "Mental" has gone through a huge makeover and has been fine tuned for a wider audience. While Mitch Ill Blaze (formerly know as (LMSA) and Full Eklypse are still very present, the departure of group member, Kryo, and the addition of newcomer, MC/Producer/DJ, Averi-Minor, LE went through a major overhaul since the first album even by name. Now know as "The Group L.E." and equipped with fine selections of lyricism over diverse yet soulful soundtracks to compliment them, this album includes topics that range from the essence of the woman to the effects of racism and black on black crime on African-Americans. The production is a lot more ear friendly this time around given that more producers contributed to this opus, even group member Averi-Minor, who produced the album's groovy-acoustic guitar-driven, first single, "Let's Ride", which features new R&B vocalist, Taj C. The album starts off with the uplifting, "Chi-Town Anthem." Produced by DeanTaz, this song sets the tone for the humble beginning of a good relationship between Chicago and the music industry. Followed by the sultry ladies anthems, "That's Sexy" and the title track "L.E. Mental" it is already evident LE aims to please. Conscious tracks like "Life Flows On" and "Nothing But the B.S." also hold their own but and LE album wouldn't be right with out grimey material from it's veterans and dramatic production from Marc Gee. While Mitch Ill Blazes fiery solo, "Count Your Blessings" equals the intensity of Full Eklypse's solo, "BallKrusher", its their collaboration with the feisty Tom Slyck on "Sorpranos", the reminds hip hop heads that men who love the ladies can be grimey too. What's an album today without the essential club tracks. "Thirstay" is a song which addresses the ladies the hustle men in the club for free drinks and "Hey" is just a get-up-out-of-your seat banger that is sure to get club heads on the floor. LE even took time to smooth things out with the Flamond Brown-produced stepper's anthem, "Step To This." People from all walks of life are sure to appreciate this album. It is sure to be a classic.
