I'm one of those people who started out in rock thinking anything mainstream is bad (because, let's face it, it usually is). I listened to all my rock-snob friends who said MCR are emo crap and never gave them a chance. Then one day I heard "Welcome to the Black Parade" on MTV and thought, "Now this is some good music." When I found out it was MCR I was immediately appalled and intrigued at the same time. I went out and bought The Black Parade and immediately loved it.

After listening to the Three Cheers singles, I decided that MCR are amazing from going from Three Cheers to The Black Parade. I thought the singles were mediocre at best, and definitely emo. But then I listened to the rest of the album and I was plesantly surprised. Though the entire album is pop-rock, and yes, still a bit emo, it really isn't a bad thing. In the context of the album, the singles seem less emo and more mainstream, straight-up rock. As a guitar player, I can respect Ray's playing a lot. In a mainstream music industry where guitar solos are as rare as fat girls (more of both of these things would make me endlessly happy), hearing a good solo now and again is really refreshing and uplifting.

The highlights for me are "I'm Not Okay (I Promise)" which at first really just made me cringe at the melodrama. But that comes with the territory with this band. Also the other two singles ("Helena" and "Ghost of You"), plus my favorite, "Cemetary Drive." The rest of the songs are entertaining, and there isn't one that I don't like. While some are forgettable and they all seem to run together after only a few listens, if you give the CD a chance you'll begin to distinguish between songs.

Though it's not nearly as good as The Black Parade, Three Cheers is a good solid CD. Don't expect miracles, but it's better than what most rock-snobs give it credit for. And that's coming from a fellow rock-snob.

CLASSIC ALL THE WAY.......2007-06-20

This album is outstanding. I am a big System of a Down fan, and usually can't put there stuff down. I have been an MCR fan for about six months. I just happened to hear I'm Not OK, and thought it was one of the best songs I ever heard. I don't listen to radio much, nor do I watch a bunch of music videos. But I have to say it impressed me enough to go buy this cd, and between this and the Black Parade, I am astonished. I literally have not listened to anything else, but maybe a few times since I started listening to them. Once you get hooked on one song long enough, you end up getting hooked on something else. There isn't a single bad song on this cd. The lyrics and the music, just go so great together. Do yourself a favor and join the parade, you won't regret it.

Not love at first hear, takes a few listens to fully appreciate.......2007-06-08

I originally bought it because the three singles that came off of it were so good, and I already had their new cd and loved it. At first I wasn't that impressed, but it grew on me. Probably doesn't hurt that I've seen them in concert twice since I bought it, and they played a lot of songs off this at their concerts.

If only for "Bury Me in Black"-get this one-some good acoustics too.......2007-05-24

This one has a range from very Metallica-ish (Bury Me in Black)-good hooks and riffs to "Interlude" acoustic & pure. Has the big hits like "Helena"-the tribute to Gerard & Mikey's Grandma and "I'm not okay"-fun to sing in heavy traffic. Bet you'll see several of these on a "best hits" if ever there should be one in the future. Yet, another must have.

For his third album, John Prine returned to the fuller sound of his landmark debut while venturing into increasingly cryptic lyrical terrain. Songs such as "Mexican Home," "Accident (Things Could Be Worse)," and "Blue Umbrella" are open-to-interpretation explorations that reveal the songsmith's intrepid reflections; they're also among the 12-song set's best numbers. "Dear Abby" is a comical novelty number while "Christmas in Prison" is a doleful in-the-clink carol. The openhearted "A Good Time" slipped into the shadows after Sweet Revenge (like Prine's other Atlantic albums) failed to hit commercial paydirt, but it's as touching as anything Prine has penned. I love Prine's music. I own more of his albums than I can count. If I had to pick 10 desert island disks, 7 of them would be by Prine. Out of all of them, this one is my favorite - it's the one I find myself listening to over and over again. Great songs, lively music with an edge, and some great guitar playing by Steve Goodman and others. A masterpiece.

"Sweet Revenge," the third album from John Prine, is a great effort. The album is littered with awesome songs, with the first four being among his best. Definately a record to check out.

Songs' value lost in production.......2004-05-15

I love John Prine. He has the ability to make you laugh while you're crying. His songs are masterful blends of dark sorrow and light humor. Howerver, that magic is lost for me on most of this album. The production is way too thick for my attention to pierce to access songs like Blue Umbrella amd Mexican Home. These songs are better realized on "John Prine Live". Granpa Was a Carpenter and Please Don't Bury Me are staple Prine but in my opinion, best aquired in a collection like Prime Prine. Leave this one 'til last.

I got kicked off of Noah's Ark...........2004-02-20

With this line John begins to take us on a wonderful ride of emotions, wit and sadness in the span of about 40 minutes. You might say "hey, this dude never had a hit record in his life" and you are right but that's one of his better qualities as far as I'm concerned. His slice-of-life songs are so memorable that you'll have a hard time forgetting them. "The Accident" and "Dear Abbey" are hilarious. "A Good Time" and "Christmas in Prison" are breathtaking. I could go on and on but the best advice is to just listen and soak it all up.

The nature of Alexander's Feast is perhaps better summed up by its other title, The Power of Music. It is a celebratory ode for St. Cecilia's Day, written by Dryden in 1697 for the traditional celebration of the patron saint of music and set in celebratory style by Handel in 1736. At its first performance that year, he incorporated two delightful concertos, one for harp and one for organ, and these are included on this recording. Winner of the Deutschen Schallplattenkritic prize.

This performance of Alexander's Feast is, in my opinion, exactly right for the work; beautiful, clear voices singing the solos with good diction, a lovely balance in the small chorus, and superb playing of appropriate instruments for the piece and for the period. The notes on the flyer are also excellent, presenting the background and intention of the work.

This recording is a very complete version of Alexander's Feast, following the composer's practice of inserting other pieces to create a performance of appropriate length. Excellent soloists, orchestra, and chorus. A high quality recording.

One of Handel's great works.......2005-11-19

I just attended a live performance of Alexander's Feast and I saw many people who probably never heard anything else than Messiah, suddenly finding out that there is more to Handel than Hallelujah chorus. This music is exciting and original, you may know several arias like "War he said is toil and trouble" or "Revenge!" but it is great as a complete work. It was written for St. Cecilia's Day celebration, then re-written several times, but it remains as a beautiful example of Handel's mastery in choral composition and writing showcase arias. The soloists are great, especially Ian Partridge, and the chorus is outstanding. This is a wonderful performance of one of Handel's great works.

Handel's Great "Feast" in an Impeccable Rendition.......2005-08-22

"Alexander's Feast," Handel's 1736 setting of Dryden's ode in honor of St. Cecilia's Day (patron saint of music) is a masterpiece and a delight, but its odd length - too long for a mixed program, too short for a full evening - gave Handel trouble and apparently still presents a problem: this is at present the only recording of this inspired work in the catalogue, though some good ones have come and gone. Fortunately, this reissue of the Sixteen's 1990 version is first-rate, in fact the best I ever recall hearing, with chorus, orchestra, soloists and conductor all in top form. Furthermore, music director Harry Christophers has wisely chosen to include the two concerti - one for harp, the other for organ - that Handel inserted in his original performances. Not only do they lengthen the piece to a satisfactory 115', they serve a satisfactory dramatic purpose by representing respectively the power of music in its pagan form - the bard Timotheus's lyre represented by the harp - and Christian - Cecilia's (apocryphal) organ. Both receive sparkling interpretations here.
If you enjoy such Handel works as "L'Allegro..." and "Acis and Galatea," you will certainly enjoy "Alexander's Feast," which finds the composer in peak form, responding with eagerness to the high quality of the English verse before him. And it's hard to imagine a better way to get to know it than this wonderful performance.

Away from the clamor of grand opera and soaring symphonies, Fairest Isle takes us into the quiet, intimate world of English Elizabethan song, and you could hope for no better guide than Barbara Bonney. Her clear, beautifully rounded voice is superbly controlled, making light of a masterful technique; if you want to hear art concealing art, look no further. This is intensely private music, in a program that cleverly sidesteps any risk of listener fatigue by starting with lute accompaniment (infinitely tender playing by Jacob Heringman), moving on to a viol quartet, then finally to the richer sound of the Academy of Ancient Music under Christopher Hogwood. Leavening the mix are three instrumental interludes. The title piece is a blithe, dancelike song. Better known are some of the classics of English song: Dowland's "Come again" and "Flow, my tears," Morley's "It was a lover and his lass," and Purcell's "If music be the food of love" and "When I am laid in earth," a heart-in-mouth performance that makes time stand still. --Keith Clarke

Fairest voice for Fairest Isle.......2006-07-27

I adore Purcell's songs, and possess many fine recordings of them. I perform them myself and enjoy the experience each and every time. When I listen to a new recording of Purcell songs, then, my expectations are both high and informed.

Barbara Bonney is simply a delight. Her voice on this album is almost incandescent with beauty. She sings with elegant simplicity that contains a great deal of art (the hardest sort of simplicity in the world to convey!). Her tone is pure, limpid as a stream, as delicately and beautifully wielded as a prism irradiating a cavern with colour.

Her vocal colour needs no introduction. Ms Bonney is widely known as "The Radiant Voice", following on from one of her album titles - and it's extremely apposite. She is radiant indeed, and her technique is beautifully sure.

Only in one track was I disappointed - the last track on the CD. "Thy hand, Belinda" seemed to me to have been approached with a more consciously dramatic style in mind, and it results in a couple of vowel distortions and a not quite convincing performance. Yet the voice itself is consistently beautiful, and I have no hesitation in giving this a 5-star rating.

Beautiful. Listen to this while you're stuck in traffic, and you are certain to feel your tension melt away at the sheer loveliness of the singing...

Exquisite taste.......2006-01-02

Barbara Bonney is one of today's most underrated singers. Her voice is always clear, true, and thrilling. She is certainly capable of vocal fireworks, yet she has the artistry and respect for musical period to know when such displays are, and are not, appropriate. In "Fairest Isle", she demonstrates her hallmark excellent taste in approach and choice of material. Too often, these lovely, gentle songs are assigned as exercises for beginning singers, and are then quickly relegated to the dust bin when the singers turn professional and are only interested in the biggest, flashiest operatic parts they can find. Ms. Bonney doesn't fall in that trap. She certainly is capable of bright vocal fire, yet she is artist enough to know gentle understatement can resonate emotionally with the listener long after the flash has faded.I must also say something about Ms. Bonney's beautifully clear diction. Her English is always understandable and perfectly presented, as opposed to Renee Fleming's, which seems to get muddier and more mannered with each successive recording. "Fairest Isle" is highly recommended!

Miraculous.......2004-10-28

I have had this CD for about 3 years, and it instantly became one of my most treasured. I never tire of listening to it.

I am now listening to it yet again, and am constantly astounded at the utter beauty, refined simplicity, and just perfect taste of Bonney's voice.
Her diction, her natural way of singing and letting the emotions melt in her mouth, her articulation always brilliant, round, glowing, 3-dimensional, her timing and instinct perfect.

And the songs... a wonderful collection of love, philosophical, and devotional pieces. All beautiful and universal.

The instrumental accompaniments are graceful, colorful (each in their own hue), and a dignified match for Bonney's musical stature.

I particularly liked "Come Again", "Never Weather-beaten Saile", "Fairest Isle", Dido's lament, and "She loves me and she confesses too". But all tracks are very good.

I own a large collection of "classical" (I hate that word) and early music, as well as opera, lied, vocal, etc.
I am very particular about what I listen to.
This CD is still one of my most cherished... intimate and very refined.

You could say that Keats was right when he wrote "Truth is beauty, beauty truth..."
Bonney's rendition of these songs is beautiful because it is honest and true... and vice-versa.

Splendid Music from a Splendid Singer.......2004-01-28

Like most classical music junkies I have my share of "early music" from the 15th and 16th centuries. When I saw that Hogwood and his terrific band from the Academy of Ancient Music were coming out with an Elizabethan selection I expected something interesting, a little exotic and a good listen. (Purcell fans will know what I'm getting at.) Wrong. What struck me is how completely accessible these songs are. All were composed and published and should not be considered "folk" music in a formal sense I suppose. But as performed by the extremely talented Ms. Bonney, I couldn't shake the feeling that I was listening to early Joan Baez singing something like "Tender Maidens." These songs aren't interesting - they're beautiful. This is a terrific alblum.

Crystalline delight!.......2003-08-16

Barbara Bonney has a voice of exquisite beauty. These lovely Elizabethan love songs fit her instrument to the tee! It is too bad that another listener had to give this CD only one star because he considers these 16th century art songs to be "long hair". They were and are nothing of the sort, they are merely very "old fashioned love songs". "Come Again Sweet Love..." is a wonderful sample of this music. I could listen to it day and night.

So catchy and fun!.......2003-06-25

This is tied for my all-time favorite MTX album - the other being "Love is Dead." Dr. Frank is such a stud, with his cute voice and humorous lyrics. A few songs on the album take on a more serious note, but their quality hardly lessens. I recommend this album to anyone who's a fan of older Lookout! Records releases or is just seeking some new pop punk for their stereo.

This album's pretty good. It's not something I've listen to 100+ times (see NOFX's Ribbed) but I can put it on and enjoy it. I would reccomend it.

GREAT PUNK ROCK.......2000-08-11

This is a great MTX cd. It is not the best though. So if you loved this cd check out Alcatraz or Love is Dead. Two great cds. Whatever you do, you should definetly pick up a MTX cd, no matter what one it is. They are all good. Dr. Frank has a great voice, which gives this trio a great punk rock sound.

I'm a really obsessive fan, and when I found out there was an extra Japan track I had to listen to it. It is absolutely THE BEST!!! For all the MCR fans the want to show lots of love, buy this and some of the singles! MCR loves support!

All-around great album.......2005-01-03

This was a really good album, except that you have to pay over twice the original price for one extra track. Between you and me, it's easier to download it and still own the original American release... but I won a contest and got a signed copy so I guess it all evens out.

A gem from La Lear - A must Have.......2007-01-30

This was Amanda Lear's second album released in 1978, and she delivers fully on the promise expected after her well received debut 'I AM A PHOTOGRAPH' 1977.

It's good for dancing but listen more closely over the eurodisco dance beat are intelligent lyrics. Follow Me is a gloomy Faustian concept of a girl selling her soul to the devil for fame and riches.

Each track starting with the above mentioned Follow Me blends seamlessly into the next. Mother Look What They've Done To Me perfectly captures the despair, anguish and devastation of rape, incest or even child abuse. Gold and Run Baby Run have driving incessant beats, and a slower version of Follow Me with different lyrics round off the suite.

Producer Anthony Monn and Lear slow it down a bit on Comics but only slightly, what a great video this would have been with Linus, Superman, Barbarella, Batman and Robin who are the "life of the party' coming out to party after the lights go out. Enigma is a witty slyly referential track: "it's all so confusing especially when you start sing" while on The Stud Lear proves she can rock with the best of them. Ironically Lear wanted to be a rock singer initially. The gentle closing number Hollywood Flashback is a homage to the stars of the silent screen.

An absolute gem of an album (whilst not her best that honour goes to the following years Never Trust A Pretty Face)and a must have for fans of disco with clever lyrics.

This is a concept album in the Faustian mode, about a girl who sold her soul to the devil and won. She's promised anything she wants (Follow Me), her first wish is for riches (Gold) and also for fame. After turning to her mother for help (Mother Look What They've Done For Me), she runs away (Run Baby Run) and retires into solitude. Renouncing her selfish desires, she offers her love to someone who really needs her, and that becomes her Sweet Revenge over temptation. The first song cycle, (Follow Me to Follow Me Reprise), has always been a classic disco suite, but with the exception of Enigma Give a bit of Mmh) the other tracks don't quite live up to the rest. Follow Me with its swirling synths is a timeless classic however, and showcases her husky voice to the full. In a way, Amanda was the European Donna Summer and it's a pity she didn't achieve greater success in the UK and USA. This album has certainly stood the test of time very well and is a prime example of intelligent dance music.

This was actually Amanda's 2nd album, it came after 'I'm A photograph' .
This Truly is A CLASSIC to have, with all wonderfull tracks like only Amanda could write herself, together with her help Anthony Monn.
All by all, It tells the story of a girl, who sold her soul to the Devil and won.

it was the cover that caught my eye in Andorra in 1979,dont remember the exact year.but i needed some music to keep me company on the rails.so i bought sweet revenge.that tape has and is still the only tape that i posess.the meanings of the songs change with the times.it has givern me moch joy and a few imagenary moments.for years i have been looking for more even virgin in vancouver could not help me.i only was able to collect the rare article about amanda.now i amincreasing my audio and visual libary.someday more audio and then return to were i first foud her and hope to see and meet her.a singer can give you more in your mind than you can explain.andorra was very good and amandatravelled with me from the arctic to athens to amsterdam and has been part of my favorites and will saved and savored by me at will. listen and you to may hear the lorelei.

The grand old men of Berkeley's pop-punk scene-these are the guys Green Day looked up to, kids-the Mr. T Experience ("MTX Starship" to fans) sounds as vital as ever on its ninth(!) album, another solid collection of 16 ultra-hummable, ultra-moshable, mostly-under-three-minute anthems. "Swiss-Army Girlfriend" is a memorable ode to a pocket knife; "Lawnmower of Love" proves that there are still creative metaphors to be had for doomed relationships; and "Hell of Dumb" introduces a neat country influence via some slide guitar. This is the best one, even better than their first record, in my estimation, though I haven't listened to all their records. Extremely clever lyrics, as always, but, as always, cleverness equals "not much fame" in the mainstream modern-rock world.

Why not buy this one?.......2000-06-28

No doubt, this is it. The most intense example of emo punk rock I have seen in a while, RiSasrU is awesome. Simply put, awesome. A perfect blend of 5 power chord progression riffs and solo work only Dr.Frank can come up with, this album is A. a must for any MTX Starship fans, B.For fans of Green Day, Blink 182, or even NOFx, and C.A great way to understand the east coast sound and where it comes from. Overall, a great album, one of my favorites, and the best song would have to be...A tie between all of them.

This MTX cd rocks. Every song is good, each with its own different "characteristic." BUY THIS CD. Well worth the money. Dr. Frank's songs that are "about a girl" are the BEST. Easily 5 stars.

Why can't I write lyrics like these? MTX is at their best with more great pop-punk melodies backed by solid, yet never overbearing, guitar, bass, and drums. Dr. Frank, Joel, and Jym are a blast live and I highly reccommend catching a show if they come anywhere near you.
