Australian pressing features 5 tracks. Independent. 2005.
I have to say I am glad I ended up buying this, because it just blew me away. There aren't very many all tech house mixes out there, so this one is perfect. It has dark, fast beats, all the way through. I nearly slammed into a police cruiser taking a corner too fast, while listening to track 17. You have to use extreme caution when playing this one loud in your vehicle!!
The only thing keeping it from being a completely perfect mix is track 6, which is a horrible pop or alternative sounding vocal track, that totally seems out of place. I had to check my CD player for a moment, thinking I had accidentally switched the CD off and went to radio, because it sounds that odd. Then I thought maybe the record company accidentally burned the wrong track 6 onto the Black Strobe CD!
You also get a 24 minute DVD that shows you a quirky look at hidden spots in Paris you wouldn't see in other travel shows. At the end, Black Strobe talk a little about themselves and their history.
This is an incredible adrenaline rush and a super hot tech house mix you simply can't pass up.
Highly recommended, fav track 'innerstrings'
Try: Metro area, Chicken lips, Swayzak, soul mekanik. Look to City 16 for new stuff
This whole "electroclash" thing cracks me up. It's all well and good that artists like Interpol, The Killers, and her uebercutieness Alison Goldfrapp have discovered the wonders of analog synths (or digital analog synth emulators--no, not Emulators, those are samplers)and the sound of early 80's synthpop. What amuses me is that clearly most of (for example)Interpol's fans have never heard of Joy Division, or Gary Numan, or God forbid DAF and could never imagine how cutting edge this ISN'T.
However, that having been said, what a nice surprise treat of an impulse purchase! This is a hell of a lot of fun, and though it's listed as an EP, at over 40 minutes, it's well within the range of what we Geriatric patients in our early 30's used to contentedly call an album; with 2 mixes each of 2 songs, however, it's an EP.
The title track is pretty much straight-up EBM, the vocalist reminds a bit of Bill Leeb of Front Line Assembly circa Caustic Grip; this resemblance is even more pronounced on Innerstrings. Me and Madonna also features a female vocalist who reminds me of Sinan from (execrable) late-period SPK. Abwehr Disco would not have sounded unreasonable as a Depeche Mode instrumental B-side from the mid-eighties, though maybe Nitzer Ebb would be more accurate.
Little references to the eighties abound: New Order-style guitar passages, the fact that one of the mixes is called "No Shuffle," one assumes as a reference to Front 242. This EP would not have sounded unusual in the mid eighties, but as the electro/EBM resources of that period are finite, it's a nice addition to the genre.
How this French retro-EBM act ended up on the Scissor Sisters' label is beyond me, but I suppose Metropolis can't have everything.
Highly recommended.

Album Description
French dance rock four-piece Black Strobe connects Norwegian death metal, French club anthems, and London super-producer Paul Epworth. Few bands manage to combine guitars and electronics as successfully. The first single, "Shining Bright Star", is a stunning marriage of gut-butting bass guitar, droning synth, and menacing but melodic vocals. The opening track, "Brenn di Ega Kjerke" ("Burn Your Own Church"), is a nod to black metal. The flip side to the band's personality is "Girl Next Door", as downbeat and spooky as a 4 a.m. walk home, and the most surprising moment is a high-octane electronic cover of Bo Diddley's "I'm A Man", which will be the second single. The sum of these parts is a jaw-dropping debut.
