A vibrant tribute to MGM's legendary confluence of brains, talent, hard work, ambition--and dare we say it?--massive egos, Singin' in the Rain long ago took its rightful place among the first rank of the studio's dizzying catalog of film musicals. This double-disc, 46-track 50th-anniversary edition features all of the film's familiar songs, as well as numerous outtakes and extended versions, many culled directly from the film's original recording masters. Its second disc also chronicles the film's clever--if studio imposed--self-referential musical gambit of recycling a slate of Arthur Freed/Nacio Herb Brown songs from Metro's first decade by including 14 of the originals, including performances by Jeanette McDonald, Judy Garland, Mickey Rooney, and Freed himself. Featuring a dozen previously unreleased recordings and an illustrated booklet containing the insightful reminiscences of the film's original writers, Betty Comden and Adolph Green, it's the ultimate musical companion to one of cinema's magical, enduring masterpieces. --Jerry McCulleyAlbum Description

Amazon.com essential recording
This is a considerably expanded version of the soundtrack album to Vincente Minnelli's Oscar-winning film. With two discs and 100 minutes of music (much of which is presented for the first time), these original session masters are highlighted by the MGM Studio Orchestra, Oscar Levant, Benny Carter, and Gene Kelly, all of whom perform such memorable Gershwin tunes as "Someone to Watch Over Me," "Love Is Here to Stay," and "S'Wonderful." Just about all of the material has a monotonously mono sound, but Levant's version of "Concerto in F" is included here for the first time in true stereo. Along with several Levant improvisational piano solos based on Gershwin's music, there are also some outtakes as well as extensive production and historical notes. --Joseph LanzaCustomer Reviews:

An Excellent CD.......2006-07-27
Fantastic Future Score.......2005-04-01
Especially when it came to the music. As many fans know, Barry Gray scored only 4 episodes - the rest being rounded out by reusing his cues for those episodes, plus liberal doses of library music. This disc gives a good overview of the magnificent music written specifically for the series, as well as a sampling of some of those library cues. As a previous reviewer said, the ultimate soundtrack to the series was released several years ago by the Fanderson organization ( which one had to join as a member to be able to order ) and is sadly out of print. Copies can be found on the internet, often selling for prohibitive prices. Unless you are a diehard collector, willing to shell out a good sized portion of your paycheck, this single disc is the way to go.
Sound quality is superb, and in some cases surpasses the previously mentioned two disc set, as several of the tracks have been remastered to remove wow, flutter, and distortion that could be heard on the Fanderson set. The main title was remixed to make it truer to the on-screen version, and the tracks from the episode "Black Sun" are in stereo on CD here for the first time ever. The previous release featured the episode's complete score, but only as a monophonic version, as many of the multitrack masters for that particular episode have been lost. For that alone, this disc is worth owning, even if you have the Fanderson set.
However, it is Gray's music that is the true reason to own this soundtrack - regardless of your feelings about the series. Full bodied, sweeping, emotional and grand... not at all your typical seventies television soundtrack. Years before John Williams revived the popularity of orchestral scores for science fiction projects, Barry Gray was filling small screen speakers with epic music that would have sounded perfectly at home in a motion picture theatre.
Space 1999 Year One Soundtrack Available Once Again!.......2005-03-09
The year 1 music definately set the tone for the TV show back in 1975. It gave it beautiful character and feeling for the show. It was ashame that for the second year that they had changed so much (even the music) and lost that character and feeling (but that is a whole other debate).
In 1976, RCA records released the year 1 soundtrack with a beautiful gate fold cover and for about 20+ years, that is all we had, until Fanderson. The year 1 soundtrack is no longer available through them, but it is the most complete. This CD, however, does well to capture the feeling of year 1 and does throw an additional track for you sun bathers out there. It is a nice 30 year anniversary gift to myself. Happy 30th Birthday: SPACE 1999!!!

On At Home With, retro-flavored rockers Cherry Twister press all the right buttons and go straight for the pop taste buds like some kind of bittersweet, all-in-one-tin fruit cocktail of half-remembered '60s summer tunes. They're not the first band to dig their dessert spoons into the Beach Boys, Bacharach, Merseybeat, and Simon & Garfunkel--and heaven knows they won't be the last. But they can count themselves among the toe-tapping best. Tangy examples of their talents include the Klark Kent-ish "Don't Forget Your Man," their riposte to the Beach Boys' "Kokomo" on "Black Summer," and the Las-meet-Fountains of Wayne stylings of "Kinda Like a Star." --Kevin MaidmentAlbum Description
1999 and second album by Pennsylvania's kings of power pop. Mixing the sweetness of the Rubinoos with the modern pop approach of Matthew Sweet and Tommy Keene, this album is already at the top of many pop critic's 'best of' lists (notjust for the year, but for all time!). 16 tracks.Customer Reviews:
Old but fresh sound.......2005-08-17
About music, nowadays many people thinks that it's important to be original. I don't think so. Join talent, creativity and passion and boom. Then you have to find people that likes this blending. It' happen when the music has a style that fits your taste and a flavor that moves your memories. It's impossible always create a really new sound in our world, with tons of information. And always other people born. Man and woman that never have heard the huge musical legacy of the last fifty years.
Cherry Twister, leaded by Steve Ward (that have released two great solo albums) is a home band that just recorded one CD, this one.
Soft voices (a little bit high-pitched voices), profusion of chorus and backing vocals, tremolo guitars, etc, but everything in function of very inspiring tunes, arrangements played by experienced musicians.
I'm very impressed by the record quality.
1) Don't forget your man (7/10) - Good tune but a little bit repetitive. Interesting arrangement.
2) Sparkle (8/10) - Great but I hate the "uh-uh-uh" part. Completely kitsch and dispensable. Maybe the two first songs of this album have influenced the All Music Guide critic, that gave 2.5/5 quote for this album.
3) Meteorite (9/10) - Very pleasant song and almost updated!
4) Charlotte B. (8/10) - good song, but not special. Some parts more inspired.
5) I'm Gonna Be the Lonely Boy Tonite (9/10) - Nice guitar in a tasteful song.
6) American Nightlife (6/10) - Instrumental filler.
7) Leila (10/10) - Carry you in a travel deep inside the almost blue sky.
8) She's Gone (9/10) - Soft and delicate tune. It remembers me "Beach Boys"
9) Maryann (9/10) - Also a more modern song, like "Meteorite". It seems like "Fountains of Wayne".
10) Black Summer (8/10) - Lightly upbeat "Posies" style ("Dear 23").
11) Brighten Up (7/10) - OK song. Music change from the cheesy slow part to upbeat routine part
12) Kinda Like a Star (9/10) - Also evokes me "Fountains of Wayne" with good guitar arrangement.
13) She's in Love Again (9/10) - Beautiful song with "America" style.
14) Til I'm Blue (9/10) - "Kinks" style song.
15) Careful (Can't Fall Again) (9/10)- Crying guitars and 60 style song.
16) Why Won't You Believe in me (6/10) - A little bit boring lullaby song.
Phenomenal songs, impeccably performed........2003-04-19
Top Twister Steve Ward is a power pop genius. If he'd been born 50 years ago, he'd have been divorced several times by now, have earned and blown three or four fortunes, and be the object of vague rumors involving the untimely demise of some loathesome late seventies record company exec.
But *this* is his time, and *this* is his disc -- at least one of them. Another, his solo effort, the more recent "Opening Night," is also a must-acquire.
One interesting thing about Steve's work is that all his tunes are strong. There are no throwaways. I particularly like 'Charlotte B.', 'I'll Be the Lonely Boy Tonight', and 'Maryann.' But they're all really good, so my favorites rotate.
This really is one of my all-time faves. If you like the Beatles and the Wondermints and the Hollies -- well crafted songs, nicely produced -- you're gonna love Cherry Twister.
Promise.
From the pop music capitol of Lancaster Pa........2002-07-10
OK, but a bit too wimpy and derivative for me.......2002-03-31
I guess I was looking for just a little bit more bite. The vocals are entirely wimpy and fey. We're not talking Monkees-bubblegum here, we're talking 1910 Fruitgum Company or even (gasp!) Lancelot Link & the Evolution Revolution.
The music is also very obviously derivative. These aren't just influences, these are imitations. The melody of "Black Summer" sounds WAY too much like "Kokomo" by the Beach Boys.
If your idea of perfect music is, say, watching reruns of the Groovie Ghoulies or Banana Splits jam to some unbearably happy, wimpy three-chord tune, complete with cheesy yeah-yeah's and ahhhh's between the verses, well, here's your record.
how does it get any better.......2001-08-20
