Mott The Hoople, Atlanta to Dayton!.......2003-12-12

A couple of years ago, my wife and I rented a car with a CD player, for a trip to Atlanta. And OF course, she loaded up on (ulp) typical "adult contemporary" music. Rather than risk an argument, I brought my Walkman, put in "Exile On Main St," cranked IT up to "Concorde," thus effectively oblitering Dan Fogleberg, Jewel, Elton John...you get the picture. And while in Atlanta, I hooked up with/reunited with several old band members and (with the exception of Lou Reed's song - you know how homophobic us 'suthen' boyz are) we played every single song on this CD. And I reflected, sadly, that I hadn't brought a Mott The Hoople CD. Well, folks, it's true: Miracles DO still occur! On the return trip, Dearest-On-Earth and I stopped at some huge truck/rest stop for...well, you know. On our way out, well laden with caffiene-plus sodas, I noticed a little "twirly" device, offering inexpensive CDs. Quickly flipping the thing around so the Missus wouldn't notice (sic) "Music For The Mellow," I beheld - and I heard voices singing 'AAAH!' - "Mott The Hoople-London To Memphis." And the truck stop wanted less than 5 bucks for it, too! Back in the car, I commandeered the CD player, and said, "You heard us play all these songs in Atlanta, so now we're gonna listen to the REAL thing." "All The Way From Memphis" was first up (I LOVE Ian's piano intro), and I remembered, happily, how that song upset Kris Kristofferson so badly in (the original, 1974) "Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore.") "Honaloochie Boogie," with its indecipherible lyrics, and "Jerkin' Crocus" passed, happily, next, but my wife surprised me when "Ready For Love/After Lights" came up: "Didn't Bad Company do a song like that?" I was so astounded, I refrained from babbling about the histories behind the next two songs, the immortal "All The Young Dudes," and "Ballad Of Mott The Hoople." Next up was MY favorite, "The Golden Age Of Rock And Roll," which, next to Dr. Hook's "On The Cover Of The Rolling Stone," contains the the all-time-#-1 HORRID guitar solo. I absolutely LOVE it! Ariel Bender (ne' Luther Grosvenor, late of Spooky Tooth, and who had the rather impossible job of replacing Mick Ralphs), who was responsible for the solo, will most assuredly have a place in Rock and Roll Heaven, for showing all the other "guitar heroes" of the 70's just how self-indulgent THEIR solos were. Whew...and the CD ends with Ian Hunter's tribute to the naughty Phil Spector, "Roll Away The Stone," and - bless Sony's heart! - the entire 6 minute-plus version of "One Of The Boys." Folks, Amazon is literally giving away this CD - I mean, really, less than 2 bucks? - for a CD that is a much, MUCH better "Mott The Hoople's Greatest Hits" CD than most of those more expensive incarnations. Pay 2 dollars and do great things for your ears, folks! It's "only" Rock and Roll!
