5 out of 5 stars Some will love it, some should leave it alone.......2007-05-28

PFM was like a chameleon. Listen to "Photos of Ghosts" and then this album and you'd be surprised it was same band. It wasn't just due to changes in the musicians; these guys were pioneers of progressive rock and then of their own music. Anyway, it's understandable that even some who like "Chocolate Kings" may not like this album.

But I love it. While it doesn't have the rich, thematic treatments found in much of their other stuff, the writing and musicianship are still awesome. There's more of an improvisational feel, and while it's not "jazz" per se, there's certainly a strong jazz influence in "Jet Lag" and "Left-Handed Theory."

And sure, Lanzetti's voice is not for everyone, I guess, but I think that he sings with great passion and capability. It's a key element in PFM's unique sound while he was with them.

Anyone who compares his voice to a goat's ought to spend a little time at a petting zoo and get a reality check. (Would a goat sound like Lanzetti? Gee, it would scare away the kids!)

4 out of 5 stars More fully in the jazz rock realm with proggy undertones.......2006-02-10

Released in 1977, Jet Lag marked the full blown adoption of a more jazz rock sound, suggestions of which can be heard on the excellent Chocolate Kings (1976). Although there are proggier PFM-like aspects to the music on Jet Lag, the balance was shifted somewhat to favor the jazz-rock side of the equation. The pieces range from the 2'10" Peninsula to the 9'10" title track and each boasts the awesome group ensemble work and individual virtuosity that is characteristic of PFM. Although the performances by all of the musicians are superb, poor Bernardo Lanzetti had a hard time working with the jazzier keys (lots of flats and sharps) in addition to the unusual time signatures and his vocal performance (in English) is correspondingly strained. A lot of folks are turned off by his vocal style and attempts to sing over this complex, jazzy material did not help him much at all - in fact this album might have been better if it was all instrumental. Keyboardist Flavio Premoli generates wonderfully atmospheric sounds on the micro-moog synthesizer along with overwhelmingly virtuosic organ/electric piano playing; Franco Mussida is an absolute master on the electric/acoustic guitar (his acoustic guitar solo piece Peninsula is incredible); and I also enjoyed Patrick Djivas fretless bass playing on this album - he was obviously influenced by Weather Report bassist extraordinaire Jaco Pastorius. Violinist Gregory Bloch also turned in a great performance here and really adds quite a lot to each piece. The remastered, digipak CD does not do much for me - although the sound quality is excellent, there are no lyrics or photos. Overall, I would say that this is a decent release by PFM although I suspect it would disappoint hardcore fans of the more classically oriented Storia di un Minuto (1972) - The World became the World (1974) period of PFM. As a huge, raving fan of PFM, prog and jazz rock, this album works for me on a number of levels and is certainly their last highly virtuosic proggy release before diving headlong into pop territory starting with Passpartu (1978). Recommended to folks that like jazz rock as much as prog rock.

3 out of 5 stars Jet Lag for the fans.......2005-08-21

This CD is a recompilation from their discs previously recorded at Italy (Europe in general), so they try to made a disc to create a good expectation in America, that's why the title. For the Fans who knows the musical stream of this group, may be it's a reverse, however, not as good as the original discs previous to this. But for somebody who tries to know the origin of PFM and don't want to dig a lot, it's perfect.

2 out of 5 stars Is there a sheep on the loose???.......2004-10-15

I bought this album based on a review I read here...boy am I sorry! First, I am a big fan of PFM. I have been a fan since Cook came out and even had the opportunity to see them perform live. They have always been outstanding musicians HOWEVER vocally they have always been a bit weak. The addition of Lanzetti did not help that problem. We actually call him "goat boy" as he bleets out in sharp vibrato. This album is weak compared to Chocolate Kings where Lanzetti's style is at least tolerable. This sounds like a bunch of jams put together. I bought this because a review said it was PFM playing jazz...trust me, it's not. It sounds like the jam sessions we used to have in the garage!

5 out of 5 stars Nice Rebound.......2003-09-03

This is PFM's fifth studio album (not including the two English remakes of the second and third albums). It is the last progressive studio album PFM would produce. It is the first studio album that is over 40 minutes long. It is also the only PFM studio album recorded in the US. Like all of their other albums, Jet Lag has different covers in the US and in Europe.

This is the second PFM album featuring vocalist Bernardo Lanzetti. He has a very irritating, undulating style. I have not heard of anyone who has liked it. Some call it an acquired taste that they never acquired. I feel his vocals completely ruined the previous album, Chocolate Kings. On Jet Lag, Lanzetti is mostly in the background. He also mellowed out his singing style, so he doesn't have much of a negative impact on this album.

The other problem with the previous album, Chocolate Kings, was the music is muted. On Jet Lag, PFM was gotten it's old, bright, energetic sound back.

Some reviewers have complained that Jet Lag is a departure for PFM, being more of a jazz fusion album, then a progressive rock album. PFM always had a major jazz influence, going back to the first album, Storia un di Minuto. The track, Dove part II, from the first album is a straight ahead jazz fusion track.

The thing that is different about Jet Lag is that it is missing some of the minor bombastic, and pompous moments. PFM did not have a lot of them, but there was always a few.

Also new for PFM on this album is violinist Gregory Bloch. He previously played in It's A Beautiful Day (replacing David LaFlamme for the group's last album) and String Cheese (not to be confused with the later String Cheese Incident). Mauro Pagani, who had played violin and flute left PFM because he was tired of travelling. Bloch does an adequate job, but he doesn't quite match up to Pagani.

Jet Lag was a last ditch effort for PFM to gain popularity in the US. The song Left Handed Theory was beign promoted as the major breakthrough for the group. It never happened...one reason was that progressive rock was beginning to die. This was the last progressive rock album that PFM recorded (not including the recent live albums).

PFM is an Italian group that had limited English skills. They played a lush, complex style of progressive rock. All their lyrics were in Italian. To try to gain popularity in the US, during the big progressive rock movement of the seventies, PFM's original Italian album were redone with English lyrics. To further try to penetrate the US market, PFM added an Italian singer who could understood the English words he was singing, and an English lyricist. As a last push, Jet Lag album was recored in California, instead of Milan.

After Jet Lag, PFM became the backup band for an Italian pop singer for a couple of albums. Then, PFM migrated to boring pop. Some of their later albums are just bad. In the mid-nineties, with progressive music making a limited comeback, PFM started moving back to their roots. They released a live album that is fairly good, called .......... (after their website). They put out a supposedly progressive album called Serendipity. Finally, they released a fantastic new live album called Live In Japan, featuring two studio tracks, one with Peter Hammill on vocals.

Album Description

By combining the pop sensibilities of acts like Fall Out Boy and Green Day with 80s era virtuosic guitar talents, Jet Lag Gemini are forging a unique style of their own. With most of it's members just completing high school, Jet Lag Gemini's sound is wise beyond their years. Frontman Misha's belowing vocals and socially conscious lyrics are far beyond the scope of a typical angst ridden teenage life. And brother Vlad has clearly locked himself in his bedroom on countless Saturday nights, to develop his dazzling guitar riff repertoire. The band are developing a reputation for energetic live shows, as hoards of fans sing along to every word. Although a developing act, Jet Lag Gemini are determined to become Rock/Pop mainstays.

3 out of 5 stars Young, Funloving Emo-Punks Already Have Their Fanbase Set In Stone.......2007-03-07

One should always be careful about letting an inordinate degree of novelty affect their appreciation of art, but music by the young seems to be a particular Achilles Heel for critics and fans alike. Conor Oberst leaps to mind, having released his official debut, Letting Off the Happiness at the age of 18, but standards really drop like anvils with acts like Smoosh. Don't color me curmudgeonly - youth talents get a high five from me. No exception for the 16-to-20-year-olds in Jet Lag Gemini, but ideally I'd give the same response to, you know, the music, no matter what age they were. Sans context, critic reaction to the Business EP should be pretty uniform: these guys have a few things going for them, but they're a few burnt neurons short of an epiphany.

Not that Vlad Gheorghiu's guitarwork hasn't or won't provoke praise from the non-moshing elite. Long live Eddie Van Halen, he's got the chops to get a knee-jerk compliment from an 80's-nostalgic critic or two, but the fact is that the guitar lines that cartwheel around the songs are as aimless (and harmless) as toddlers in snowsuits. Essentially, he was left to add what gratuitous superfluities he'd like without the accomplished guitar style penetrating the shell of the ubiquitous, sludgy rhythm guitar that ultimately seems so much more important to the music Jet Lag Gemini is making. It's not that I necessarily prefer progginess to power-poppiness. I don't. But I can't let myself call this a successful integration of punk-revival structure and hair metal excess, because, though they coexist, there's precious little interaction.

The reason Vlad's role on the Business EP smells so fishy to me is the ease with which I could make the above claim. Fact is, it's hard to give good press to a band that, at its core, sounds so much like so many other bands. I almost ran to a punk-emo pal to help me with the "R.I.Y.L." for fear I'd be told Copeland was an obvious comparison - but no specific comparison is obvious. So the ersatz fusion of purported "virtuosic guitar" and "pop punk sensibilities" gets them a blurb for their record label to spout, but it's neither a solid reason to buy the record, nor the aspect most will come to appreciate in the band. They're basically your fun-loving local punk group, except with more than one or two recognizable songs, looking to pump fists and maybe get a little mosh action, but certainly not to appease critics. The six tracks on the Business EP are written using the same old bag of tricks, including as many start-stop dynamics as you can picture (rhythmic holds, five irritating seconds of sappy ballad, pretending to end the song, etc.) And let's please not even think about breaching traditional verse-chorus-verse structure.

The EP is consistently "good enough" to this end, and I'll be the first to admit that the less-than-20-minute running time makes the utter lack of variation way easier to swallow than full album format. In terms of promise for future releases, however, this band's treading on pretty thin ice. Even if they do manage to generate a batch of 11 new songs as consistent as or better than these 6 (in direct defiance of songwriting trends amongst basically everyone but Mark E. Smith, Stephin Merritt, or Robert Pollard) it can only serve to make their live show more varied, not their sound. Writing a review for this stuff is rough because it's like dissecting a basketball; I feel like I'm missing the point by pretending it's more cerebral than it is. It's a basketball. Throw it in the net. Long and short, this is an entirely different culture of music than the one with which I'm accustomed. It sets off different parts of the endocrine system. So frankly, I'm not keen on wasting thoughts that the band themselves probably didn't have in the first place. Some people will like Jet Lag Gemini, you outta know who you are. I just felt the need to comment on the bigger picture. Call it the Long Version.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing........2006-06-11

I've been a Jet Lag Gemini fan for a good year or two now. I love going to all of their shows as well as working for them. They have come such a long way - I remember in the earlier stages, you didn't have to get beaten up to get to the front. They sound exactly like they do on their CD. They're upbeat, infectious, catchy, and you'll fall in love with them the moment you hear their music. "Geared For Action" and "Ready Set No" are my personal favorites, but "Don't Leave Me Hanging" is the classic that everyone knows. This CD is for anyone that enjoys music, no matter what genre one prefers. Soon enough, you'll listen to every song repeatedly, memorize their lyrics, and go crazy when you hear them perform. They're fun to talk to as well, :)

You won't regret it.

5 out of 5 stars still playing it after all these years.......2003-03-03

this is the only PFM album (apart from 'Chocolate Kings' occasionally) that i still play on a regular basis. where their earlier stuff nowadays sounds rather ponderous and dated, 'Jet Lag' still sounds surprisingly fresh and full of invention. not that it's a typical PFM album either - much jazzier than previous recordings and therefore something of a one-off. jazz-rock aficionados might even consider this work an encroachment on their territory - after all, who were PFM, an established prog rock band, to come out with such a persuasive jazz-rock offering? thing is they pulled it off with extraordinary virtuosity and style, and what really impresses is how they managed to weave all that intricate jazzy instrumental playing into memorable songs with memorable melodies - no directionless fusion noodling here thank you very much! i mean, how common is a jazz-rock song album? well i can't think of another one. definitely one of a kind and well worth snapping up!

3 out of 5 stars For fusion fans and PFM completists only.......2002-01-31

On this album, Italian band PFM went off on a fusion tangent. More time was put aside for the jamming that was a staple of PFM's live shows. Keyboardist Flavio Premoli put the organ and synth on the back burner and went primarily with electric piano. Bassist Patrick Djivas went fretless. Flute/violin player Mauro Pagani had left after the "Chocolate Kings" album, and was replaced by violinist Gregory Bloch. Bloch has an unusual sound, lacking most of the high overtones usually heard from a violin--his violin often ends up sounding more like a saxophone (on the closing solo of "Traveler") or a keyboard (on "Storia in 'La'").

While the musicianship was still first-rate, the songwriting and arrangements just weren't in the same league as PFM's earlier albums. The album is listenable and pleasant, but is second-rate PFM. The high points on "Jet Lag" would have been among the weaker points on "Chocolate Kings". Strong moments include "Traveler", built on a repeating 21/8 organ figure, and the "swallow the borderline" middle movement of "Jet Lag".

5 out of 5 stars The peak of a stellar career.......2001-11-07

PFM were at the height of their powers with this album. Unlike previous--and later--efforts, this album features the most unique sound. Before, the Genesis, King Crimson, Yes, etc. influence was palpable. Later, a Jethro Tull sound crept in. But this one is just PFM with their jazziest, most inventive music firing on all cylinders. It's too bad they couldn't build on the success of this album; their later work was good, but never came close to matching the brilliance and tastiness of this one.

Lanzetti's vocals get a bit distracting at times, but the instrumental creativity is so infectious that I can't listen to this album without smiling, tapping, head-banging, you name it.

There isn't a single weak track on this disc, but even if there were, "Left Handed Theory" would be worth the purchase price. And just try to stay in a bad mood after hearing "Breakin' In."

Album Description

Jet Lag is one of the most important new Spanish bands. Based in Madrid, they quickly became the "next big thing" in the Spanish alternative scene with their debut album ("Amplifier", Bittersweet Recordings, 2000). The songs in that first record put them really close to some of their heroes: REM, Fountains of Wayne, Wilco…, bands that know how to mix an elegant pop songwriting with high power guitars and rock attitude.

"Beautiful Scars" was chosen in each and every Best Of The Year album list in Spain, including a wide range of magazines, from hard rock ones to alternative / trendy others, reflecting the capability of the band to concern and reach any kind of listener. Now you have a chance to know why. The American edition includes 3 Bonus Tracks: one new song and two astonishing covers: "Hungry Heart" (from Bruce Springsteen) and "Beautiful" (from Cristina Aguilera / Linda Perry), only released before in the Spanish "3 Singles EP". It also comes out on Vinyl for the first time with a special LP + 7" EP package. The artwork is the original Spanish cover with a revised logo and back cover.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Wildly uneven, and not satisfying.......2004-10-01

These Spanish guys have not decided what they want to be. There are some bombastic rough edged tunes, some ballads, and some straight ahead pop/rock. The latter is by far the most compelling, and the ballads (besides Rain) are very nondescript. The cover songs are abysmal (especially Hungry Heart). That was a very mediocre Springsteen song anyway, but believe me, you don't want to hear this. If they stick to the mid-tempo stuff next time; they may warrant another listen.
