A Musical Treat.......2006-01-08
Yehudi Menuhin and Stéphane Grapelli together had made some of the most beautiful music ever-recorded. And I believe that this is one of the many successful albums they recorded together. In this recording, both violinists have showed their excellent musicianship and interpretative eloquence as well, making it one of my most cherished CDs from my collection.
These are the main ingredients of a perfectly-made CD for your listening pleasure: mix violins, piano, bass and drums together, combine two terrific violinists, season with the best melodies in the 20s, 30s and 40s from Irving Berlin, Jerome Kern, Cole Porter and Rodgers & Hart. Add the musical talents of Nelson Riddle, Max Harris, Martin Taylor, Eddie Tripp, Alan Clare and the rest of the studio musicians. Now all you have to do is to sit back, relax and savor these stunning melodies coming from your CD player. Listen to it in full-volume and fill your music room with the sheer beauty of these classics.
One of my favorite musical instruments is violin. With its four strings, it gives a whole wide range of musical versatility and I simply love the fascinating sound it produces.
My personal highlights are the best tunes from Jerome Kern - "The Way You Look Tonight" (Nelson Riddle arranged this particular track and conducted the Woodwind and Brass section), "A Fine Romance," "Pick Yourself Up," "Why Do I Love You?" and "All The Things You Are."
My choices from Irving Berlin's gems are - "Isn't It A Lovely Day?" featuring the great artistry of Nelson Riddle in arranging and conducting, "Cheek To Cheek" and "I've Got My Love To Keep Me Warm."
The Cole Porter repertoire represented his musical sophistication in "Night And Day," "I Get A Kick Out Of You" and "Just One Of Those Things."
The choice cuts from the talented and creative team of Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart are "My Funny Valentine" and "Thou Swell."
Listening to this CD is so delectable and equivalent to having my favorite dessert - be it Tiramisu, New York Cheesecake, Black Forest Cake, Chocolate Soufflé, Créme Brulee, Chocolate Mousse or Chocolate-Coated Strawberries! ;)
A musical treat.

Customer Reviews:
Tjader in top form.......2006-10-13
With this recording, Carmen McRae continues the well established tradition (see Billie Holiday, Cassandra Wilson, Christian McBride etc etc etc) of taking pop songs and giving them a new workout. She takes Evil Ways, originally by Tjader's former band member Willie Bobo, and gives it the sultriest rendition I have ever heard, and her versions of Don't You Worry 'Bout a Thing, All is Fair and Heat Wave have real personality and warmth. (Possibly the only downside for me is McRae's vocals on Besame Mucho, but I only noticed the problem since I began learning Spanish!)
Cal Tjader, as always, his solos are flawless and plays with great sensitivity on Upside Down and Besame Mucho. Tjader had a wonderful talent as a percussionist, listening to him play is almost like watching a master artist painting. Sadly, this was to be Tjader's last recording before passing away.
The repertoire swings from jazz to Latin, delicate (Upside Down, All is Fair), to powerful (Love, Evil Ways) and everybody handles everything easily, including the merengue interpretation of Love with the drum kit playing a modification of a standard jazz pattern.
The recording quality is smooth and clear, everything you could possibly want is right here. Excellent work on this cd....definitely, a gotta get.
The BEST ever.......2005-09-28
Nice surprise.......2004-07-05
I especially liked Carmen's funky staccato phrasing on Besame Mucho. Who would have thought that such phrasing would have worked but a confident stylist. I can imagine Carmen saying to herself, "Okay, it's time to take this where others have dared to go."
Such artistry separates the divas from the common balladeers. This is one jazz cd that deserves to be placed on my replay list.
Awesome Latin jazz.......2003-12-03

Cal Tjader executes one of the best solos of his recorded career on Evil Ways, and plays with great sensitivity on Upside Down and Besame Mucho. This was the last album Tjader made before he died, and when conguero Poncho Sanchez then struck out on his own, he took part of the band with him. Who could blame him? These guys can really play!
The repertoire swings from jazz to Latin, deliacte (Upside Down, All is Fair), to powerful (Love, Evil Ways) and everybody handles everything easily, including the merengue interpretation of Love with the drum kit playing a modification of a standard jazz patterns, as well as all the Latin-izing. And what a wonderful change it is to hear Latin jazz album that is not purely Cuban or Brazilian influenced, but takes ideas and rhythms from a few places. The recording quality is smooth and clear, everthing you could possibly want is right here.
Jazz? No. Latin jazz? You bet, and awesome Latin jazz at that!

Product Description
By 1963, Berry Gordy and company were fine-tuning Motowns sound. Jumping on the charts were Martha & The Vandellas, with Come And Get These Memories and Heat Wave, signaling the emergence of the writing/production team Holland-Dozier-Holland. Little Stevie Wonder was No.1 with the record-breaking Fingertips (Part 2). Mary Wells You Lost The Sweetest Boy and Whats Easy For Two Is So Hard For One turned out to be a double-sided hit. The Supremes made their Top 40 chart debut. This five-CD set captures the hits and the misses during the labels fifth year of existence. It features the A-side and B-side of every single released by Motown and its subsidiaries during the high-growth phase of Detroits entertainment juggernaut. Over the course of the sets 119 tracks, you can hear The Chuck-A-Lucks and Jack Haney & Nikiter Armstrong with a couple of Cold War novelties, Martha & The Vandellas following one hit natural disaster Heat Wave with another Quicksand, and an outstanding H-D-H production The Marvelettes Locking Up My Heart that should have been a much bigger hit than it was. Leaving the fold were the Workshop Jazz, Divinity and Miracle labels; new to the company was the V.I.P. imprint. The set is bound in a scaled-down 78-rpm-era album, with cardboard sleeves to hold each of the discs, and 92 pages of rare photos, detailed annotations and liner notes. It also features a reproduction 45-rpm single from its era; in this case, its Martha & The Vandellas (Love Is Like A) Heat Wave b/w A Love Like Yours (Dont Come Knockin Every Day). Martha Reeves contributes an essay to the set detailing the artists-eye-view of life in the labels early years. Also included is an historical overview by author and scholar Craig Werner, and, as in previous volumes, copious track-by-track annotations researched by noted authors and discographers Bill Dahl and Keith Hughes.

The real star of this film!.......2006-09-05
However the real star of this movie is the vivacious Mitzi Gaynor! She steals every scene she is in. She is beautiful, talented, and hard to take your eyes off of!
I recommend this movie ! I also recommend " Anything Goes"
with Mitzi Gaynor. It has just been restored and the look of it is probably the best color of any DVD I own.
ONE OF THE VERY BEST MUSICALS EVER.......2006-05-29
The musical score is out of this world as are the performances, set designs, choreography, costumes and art direction...
It`s a very CinemScoped film aaaaaaaaaaaaaand for the better of it:-)))))))
Marilyn deserved a better script. Her musical numbers are a joy to watch........2005-12-15
explain.
Yet there are things in this movie that has caught my attention.
As soon as Marilyn appears as the Hat check girl named Vicky, she mentiones that she has just finished acting in the CHERRY
ORCHARD, a Chekov play. This movie was filmed 2 years before she
joined the Actor Studio. But at this time, she was receiving
acting lessons from Michael Chekhov, nephew of Anton Chekov the
Russian playwright who wrote the Cherry Orchard. One gets the
feeling that this dialogue in the film was ¨suggested¨by Marilyn
herself. It shows the intellectual side of Marilyn.
Her comic ability does not get many scenes. There's is a comic
scene in which she plays with the pronunciation of the word
AFTER, right before she sings her sing AFTER YOU GET WHAT YOU WANT YOU DON'T WANT IT.
Her best number is HEAT WAVE. Even today it does not look dated.
Her other number LAZY is ok, where she shares the number with
Mitzy Gaynor and Dan Dailey. I felt a more glamorous number
could have been selected here.
¨You'd be surprised¨¨ was a number deleted from the film, but it is found in many Marilyn Monroe CDs .¨In Donald O'Connor's song
A MAN CHASES A GIRL Marilyn provides a background voice. This
song was later recorded by Eddie Fisher and Debbie Reynolds and
it became a hit.
Marilyn deserved a more comic role in this film. Walter Lang did
not know how to make good use of Marilyn's humorous ability. In
her next film, the SEVEN YEAR ITCH, Billy Wilder got a tremendous performance out of Marilyn.
