5 out of 5 stars Beautiful!.......2007-05-26

What can I say? This is the cd single of one of his most beautiful songs from his latest album "Awake". In fact, it's so nice that it moves me to tears every time I hear it! If that makes me a wimp so be it! Actually, this is perfect for those times when you don't have time to listen to his whole album but want to have your daily dose of his wonderful voice. Like I said, what can I say...

This is very misleading. It is not an album but 1 song. I intend to ask for my money back. This is not a comment on Josh Groban but on this album whcih is a farce.

It was Dylan himself who said "the present now will later be past" and there's no better proof of it than this bizarre live collection of his old hits performed in big band versions where nothing seems to mean what it originally did. There's something going on here and even Dylan doesn't know what it is. Following the success of Cheap Trick and Neil Diamond--who both scored with Japanese live albums--Dylan took his Las Vegas revue with him and handed up "Don't Think Twice, It's All Right," "Mr. Tambourine Man," "Shelter from the Storm," and even "The Times They Are A-Changin'" without the vehemence that made them anthems for a past generation. Weird. --Rob O'Connor

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars unfolding surprising beauties and power.......2007-03-29

After the 2 Rolling Thunder albums for me this is the 3rd best life album of Bob Dylan. Though there are a few songs on this album which were changed to the worse (especially one of my favourite songs, Oh Sister, is pretty much ruined) many others unfold a surprising beauty: The tendernes "I want you" of this former fun-song and on the other hand the power of "It's alright Ma" and "All along the watchtower" just knock me out! Other highlights to me are "Is your love in vain" and "The Times they are changing" (never heard this better!) which convey here a expression of passionate humanity and honour that later on Dylan unfortuneately somehow seems to have lost... What is so "Las Vegas" about these songs? I can't help but love and strongly recommend this Live album from the 70s where he truely had his peak time!

4 out of 5 stars breath of fresh air perhaps.......2007-01-11

I appreciate the different ways around the same songs Dylan takes from tour to tour. If I were to put one version of each Dylan song in a vault to be heard for all of time, most of these wouldnt come close. But Simple Twist of Fate has reached its pinnacle of beauty right here as far as I'm concerned. This head-bobbing version of All I Really Want To Do would certainly get consideration, and yes even the reconstructed The Times They Are A-Changin' is very worthy. This song never excited me much musically, and i think it's driven with tension here. And sorry, but, All I Really Want To Do was done pretty crappily to begin with IMO. Regardless, I think it's impossible to degrade the quality of the original classics through reinvention, for better or worse. And to keep playing them in the same vain is redundant.

It also might be the most accessible to new/ non fans with it's slickness and emphasis on melody, in contrast to his more recent performances.

1 out of 5 stars Truly sad..........2006-12-28

Dylan has spent the last 40yrs trashing his legacy, nowhere worse than here--the abysmal Budokan shows, lounge versions of his best material served up like McDonald's cheeseburgers. I don't know what's sadder, Dylan as a raddled-out parody of himself or the legions of fans who continue to believe that he has anything to do with the guy who lit the world on fire back in 1965.

4 out of 5 stars Some necessary Budokan revisionism.............2006-02-01

The maliciousness that has been directed at this album over the years is an open testament of the way in which Dylan fans desire to own their idol, to constrict him, and to demand him to peform and record in ways that are their own, but not his....
"Live at Budokan" was my first Dylan album, miraculously discovered twenty five years ago as a window into a magic world.
Ever since I've heard bile and venom from innumerable sources about it's 'Vegasy' feel, and its 'commercialism'.
But Dylan is a song and dance man, mercurial and a mystery -
the minute you define him and place expectations on him he will inevitably disappoint.
Above all he is a true entertainer, who paradoxically brings everything to his performances and yet nothing, like it's always gonna be new.
The songs on this album are all like that, all stone cold classics, but elastic, sweet, wry, still timeless.
After twenty five years of listening to all the rubbish reviews, I still recommend this album for any newcomer to Dylan.
For one thing, there is booklet of lyrics to the great songs which is really helpful for new fans, as it was for me so many years ago, and the album photos still talk of the irresistible mystery that is Dylan.
'Budokan'is like an old road map on which the street signs are still right.
It truly gets better like old wine.

5 out of 5 stars Every Song Different than Before.......2005-11-09

Unlike a lot of live albums that just seem to reproduce an artist work with applause between the songs, this one has a different arrangement for every song on it. The opening, "Mr. Tambourine," is a rocker performed by about a dozen musicians. It's mind boggling. Every song is mind boggling. Though it came out two years before I was born, I sounds as fresh as if it were performed yesterday. If you think you know Dylan's work and you haven't heard this CD, well you have no idea how songs like "Blowing in the Wind," "Shelter from the Storm," "It's Alright Ma," and a huge host of others can sound. Five stars for this record in my book. My recommendation, get this record.

5 out of 5 stars Elvis at his best.......2007-07-08

There is nothing like hearing elvis perform live. And it didn't get better than these live vegas shows from the early 70s.He sang with amazing power and passion. Can't Stop Loving You,Sweet Caroline,Release Me are but a few examples of Elvis grabbing a song from his gutt and making it his.The standards Suspicious Minds and Polk Salad Annie allow him to put it all out there for all to hear why he is forever the single greatest singer of anyones lifetime.Runaway,Kentucky Rain are rare gems not apart of the original album. But for me the version of See See Ryder is probably his best.Turn it up and enjoy.

Here is a nice snapshot of Elvis before it all went downhill .
He is backed by his versatile band who are able to create the perfect setting in a number of musical styles - Elvis puts them through a lot .

This CD shows that there was a lot more to Elvis than the casual observer / listener may have thought .

After you've bought the Greatest Hits , this should be your next stop .

This is a whole lotta music , played with a whole lotta attitude . Well recommended .

5 out of 5 stars The King On Stage!.......2005-01-29

In the mid-1980s, during my childhood, I saw Kurt Russell star in the movie "Elvis - True Story". I liked the music so much I wanted to buy a soundtrack album. However, my Granddad had a copy of "Elvis: 40 Greatest," so I borrowed that instead.

Reading the sleevenotes of that album and listening to that album, I was blown away. I had enjoyed great Country Music and the hit's of The Beatles before that, but this was different. I felt i had travelled back in time to the 1950s and 60s and was sitting in an American diner listening to the great Elvis hit's on a jukebox, as hit followed hit.

Pretty soon I saved up my pocket money and bought "The Sun Sessions", "20 Rock N Roll Greats" and then the "On Stage" collections. This was all before Compact Discs, so there was vinyl and tape.

This album originally continue no tracks for the concert that were on previous Elvis albums. They were all new songs or covers from the show that hadn't appeared on any of his previous work (unlike much later live albums which contained alot of the hit's).

Nowadays, in the CD age, this CD contains several bonus tracks, which feature some of the hit's Elvis sang at that concert ("In The Ghetto", "Kentucky Rain", "Long Tall Sally", etc, etc).

The opening track called "C.C. Rider" on the original LP (or "See See Rider" as it is credited as here) is a song Elvis sand at many concerts and it's just a good as opening as any album ever recorded.

Elvis then treats us to a version of Englebert Humperdincks "Release Me" (better than the original!) and then pays tribute to Neil Diamond with "Sweet Caroline (good times never seemed so good)". He does justice to Del Shannon's "Runaway" (a song in the style of many of Elvis' early rockers).

My favourite song on the album has to be "The Wonder Of You" a tender love song, sung as only Presley can, that was released as a single.

"Polk Salad Annie" is a great song with a novelty element. About a no good lying and stealing family, who have nothing better to do that steal watermelons. (lol)

Elvis then disproves any claim he hated the Beatles with a wonderful tribute to them, his version of "Yesterday". Not as good as Paul McCartney's original, but better than most of the other 50,000 cover versions!

On the CD Elvis then goes into a brief version of another Beatles classic "Hey Jude" (that was edited off the original album). It's a shame he didn't sing the whole song as he was doing such a great job!

Country music is where Presley's roots are and that's why songs like "Proud Mary", "Let it be me", "Kentucky Rain" (a pure classic!) and "Walk a mile in my shoes" (another pure classic!)
fit so well on this collection.

The versions of "long tall sally" and "in the ghetto", included a bonus tracks on this CD are just as good as the ones on the original studio albums by Presley.

"On Stage" was recorded at the beginning of the 1970s, a decade which saw many live albums by him. It ranks as one of the best.

5 out of 5 stars The King Rules!.......2004-12-28

Bolstered by a half-dozen bonus tracks which focus heavily on Elvis' famed 1969 American Studios sessions, this expanded edition of ON STAGE is an essential link between the King's late sixties comeback and his sumptuously orchestrated pop outings of the early seventies. It's also a hell of a show, even if it is assembled from numerous performances recorded over a period of half a year.
The focus here (and henceforth) is on "new" material, rather than the rock & roll songs that made Elvis a star, with big but remarkably supple arrangements backing the finest set of vocal cords ever recorded. Elvis tackles a range of eras and styles, finding new things to do with CCR's "Proud Mary," Neil Diamond's "Sweet Caroline," Del Shannon's "Runaway" and a saccharine staple like "Let It Be Me" literally without missing a beat. But it's the additional cuts that really make this set. "Walk a Mile in My Shoes" is in itself worth the price of the disc, but hearing the band slow its groove down in the closing moments and effortlessly turn it into "In the Ghetto" is a bit of concert magic on a par with anything anyone else was doing in 1970, and that's saying a lot. Even the schmaltzy "Don't Cry Daddy" gains a certain magic in this context, paving the way for a show-stopping workout on "Kentucky Rain" that manages, against all odds, to equal if not better the stellar original version. "Suspicious Minds" is given a similarly mammoth treatment, though perhaps less so than would be the case a few months later in the THAT'S THE WAY IT IS period. Only on "Yesterday" (a song I've never much cared for) does the King stumble a bit, fudging the lyrics before putting things right with a bit of the coda from "Hey Jude."
In short, ON STAGE is a fine way to hear rock's most important figure at the height of his powers, covering a broad spectrum of excellent material with outstanding support from his band. Not to be missed!

These historic sessions, recorded between 1969 and 1970 and originally released as a 90-minute double LP, merged jazz and rock into the hybrid genre known as fusion. They remain Miles Davis's most controversial recordings. Davis, along with pianists Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea, and Joe Zawinul; bassist Dave Holland; soprano saxophonist Wayne Shorter; bass clarinetist Benny Maupin; drummers Jack DeJohnette, Billy Cobham, and Lenny White; and percussionist Airto Moreira, went electric with rock rhythms, and the rest, as they say, is history, or as some feel, the end of jazz history.

Now, all of the sessions' 265 minutes are contained on this four-CD set, compiled from alternate takes, nine unreleased tracks, and selections from previously released LPs. The superb remastering reveals the spectral power of Davis's amplified, muted, and open trumpet painting on a swirling harmonic canvas created by Hancock, Corea, and Zawinul, especially on Zawinul's impressionistic "Pharoah's Dance," Shorter's elliptical "Sanctuary," and Davis's rocking "John McLaughlin."

The previously unreleased tracks, including "Yaphet," "Corrado," "Tevere," "The Big Green Serpent," and Zawinul's "Double Image," contain some interesting East Indian motifs and inventive arrangements but will probably not change anyone's mind about this well-debated period of Miles Davis's career. --Eugene Holley Jr.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars So much untapped potential..........2007-07-11

Okay, first off these are not songs from the "real" B*tches Brew sessions - those were finished when this album was released. Rather, this is a collection of mostly fantastic outtakes released in the wake of B-Brew, around the time a few tracks from Big Fun were being recorded, which explains the overlap between these two albums. Now Brew itself is not one of my favorite Miles albums - I think it has its moments (title track; Miles Runs the Voodoo Down; John McLaughlin; five minutes of Spanish Key), but is weighed down by filler songs. As far as Miles' fusion goes, I prefer In a Silent Way and Big Fun immensly. You don't get much filler on the full boxed set.
Okay, so sure, some of the best songs are issued on Big Fun, which nine times of ten will be less expensive than this: I speak, of course, of Great Expectations (what a song!), Yaphet, Trevere (what a bad song! But it's the only loser out of the outtakes, along with Feio!), The Little Blue Frog, Lonely Fire (top notch!), and Recollections (Beautiful!). So I'd guide you to Big Fun whether or not you inteded to buy this album.
If you didn't, here's one reason to: Guinevere. If you're familiar with the Crosby, Stills & Nash original, I can tell you right now you'll never hear it the same way again when you've heard the long (twenty minutes), trippy "fusion-odyssey" version this one presents. It renders the song near-unrecognizable. You may love it (I do!!), you may hate it, but you can't deny Miles really puts his own stamp on it. A very well-made, intricately arranged cover.
Another great song is the intense Corrado. Miles and the group really rock out on this one. Him backing up his claim that he could make the best damn rock band you ever heard (or something to that effect).
Plus Double Image is a pretty good song too! I mean, not as good as Guinevere, but still a nice song. So are the two standard-length tracks, The Big Green Serpent and Take It or Leave it.
I'm surprised Miles shelved so much of this. He could've easily gotten another very good album out of this material, even when we include the songs not released on Big Fun. Guinevere, Corrado, Double Image, Take it or Leave it and the Big Green Serpent... could've been great. And he'd have to call the album Corrado, because the word sounds cool.
Yes, like all of Miles' other boxed sets, this one just screams "for fans only". But if you're a fan, you can't go wrong, really.

5 out of 5 stars Bitches Brew rocks.......2007-03-09

This box set is absolutely amazing. Totally innovating, and did it ever revolutionize music!

4 out of 5 stars Fascinating groove.......2007-02-25

I have enjoyed listening to this music both intently and as background. At times it all seemed like so much musical doodling but when I considered the calibre of the musicians playing I became much more appreciative of its musical integrity. Excellent production.

5 out of 5 stars Simply Miles...........2007-01-12

5 out of 5 stars Very nice..........2006-12-04

I remember buying this in high school. Miles wasn't particularly popular at the time, and my brother gave me a look and said "why did you buy this crap?". My brother, ironically, would get into jazz when he got into college, yet, never apologised for this insult. As for this music, it's truly outstanding. It's incredibly complicated stuff, sometimes with 3 keyboardists, 2 drummers, 2 bassists all playing at once, with Miles on top of it all. The initial 6 tracks are some of the greatest stuff I've ever heard, with Spanish Key being my favorite. I remember being put off by it a bit at the time. The only Davis albums I had at the time were the mediocre The Man with the Horn, and the better We Want Miles, so I wasn't up on the great Miles. I have around 28 Miles CD's now, and this is definitely top five. I like Big Fun better, but the music there was from these sessions, so it's a bit confusing. The remastering is light years superior to the vinyl, and is definitely worth the upgrade. It also has superlative liner notes, detailing the sessions and some good historical background. As for the bonus tracks, most of this material was released on other albums. The songs Great Expectations, Orange Lady, and Lonely Fire ended up on the original release of Big Fun. Recollections, Trevere, The Little Blue Frog (master take), and Yaphet were also released on the remastered version of Big Fun. Guiniverre ended up on Circle in the Round (in a slightly shorter version), and Double Image (the short version) ended up on Live Evil. So there are only 6 actual new tracks (Corrado, The Big Green Serpent, an alternate take of The Little Blue Frog, Feio, a slightly longer version of Double Image, and Take It or Leave It). These 6 are good, but unless you really adore Miles, you may be able to do without them, even though I think this is a good set to have.

Oleander take their name from a highly poisonous shrub. A spin of February Son makes one wonder why they didn't decide on a more straightforward name like The Bastard Sons of Alice in Chains. The opening cut "Why I'm Here" is a wholesale clearance on grunge staples: the subdued verses, the Stone Temple Pilots vocals gaining speed as the chorus, wavelike, rises and crashes on the same ears that grew bored with this sound years before. At times the boys in the band stretch in a more interesting poplike direction, but not enough to reach into that part of the brain that remembers strikingly good music. --Jason Josephes

5 out of 5 stars pleasanty surprised.......2006-01-26

Purchased this for one song, WHY I'M HERE and I was pleasantly surprised with the entire cd. I hate to compare with other groups, but it is reminds me of something from the 80's vocalwise with a 90's edge musically. I rarely like anything the first time through and this caught my attention from beginning to end...so much I let it play through three times before I realized it was time to go home from work. What a bonus!!!

2 out of 5 stars not completely bad.......2006-01-22

rather than seeing the cup as 2/3 empty, i'm gonna try to look at it as 1/3 full. there are 3 good things about this album. 1) "why i'm here", 2) "i walk alone", and 3) "how could i?"

the only other one you might not want to skip is "stupid", as this song is fairly mediocre and not painful at all to listen to

5 out of 5 stars I could listen to this disc for hours on end!.......2004-09-10

I could not keep this CD out of my stereo. It is constantly in rotation with my music collection and typically gets a few more plays than the rest. Since this was their major label debut it was important to come in with a bang and they accomplished that task. This band is exemplified by heavy guitar work, but the unrefined vocals of lead singer Thomas Flowers stick out as one of the most unique things about the group. If you need a disc to listen to all day long everyday, this is the one for you. Here is a track breakdownÉ

1. YouÕll Find Out: A mysterious guitar intro leads into a straightforward rock track. This song is a great set-up for the rest of the album, good enough to get you interested, but holding back a bit on what they can do. 8/10

2. Stupid: Yeah, this song is the weakest on the CD. Not bad, just not as good as the others. The weakest lyrics on the album could have been saved by great music, but a modest guitar solo leaves a bit to be desired. 6/10

3. Down When IÕm Loaded: A good song overall that got some radio play. Decent guitar hooks combined with lyrics that actually have a meaning lead to a well put together song. 8/10

4. Why IÕm Here: The first ÒslowÓ song on the disc shows the versatility of the band. Strong vocals push this song through with just Òthere enoughÓ guitar and a placid drum part that tie the song together and push it through to the end. 10/10

5. I Walk Alone: Catchy singing with nice string arrangement leads into one of the best songs on the disc. No one item in this song sticks out; everything melds well into a song that most people can relate to and is fun to listen to. 10/10

6. Lost Cause: My personal favorite, high-energy guitar work drives this song from start to fake finish to starting again to the actual finish (listen to the song to see what I mean). Fantastic lyrics and a slamming drums top this song off. 11/10

7. Where Were You Then? Not a bad song, but you can feel the formula of the band really develop in this song. Not a bad thing, you just really start to recognize what you are in for. 8/10

8. Shrinking The Blob: Starts out with a great guitar intro, but then it falters. The music overall is good (especially in the chorus) but the lyrics are really weak and this song leaves some to be desired. 6/10

9. How Could I? Time to slow it down again, which is a nice change of pace. With an album of driving rock sounds, hearing a ballad with string accompaniment and good lyrics was just what was needed. 9/10

10. Boys DonÕt Cry: Every once in awhile a cover hits home with the same energy and passion as the original and this cover (originally by The Cure) does just that. An all out drive to the finish, this song rocks. Turn the stereo up when this tune hits. 10/10

11. Never Again: The final song really encompasses the whole CD very well. From the slow melodic intro to the driving middle, and the reflective end, this song leaves you wanting more. Throw in the best lyrics on the disc and you have another winner. 10/10

This CD is a winner and I would recommend it to anyone. It gives you a great combination of fabulous lyrics, grinding guitar, driving drums and enough fun that you want to listen to it over and over.

5 out of 5 stars A band that is definitely paving paths for future pop/rock.......2004-04-14

What can you expect from a CD which has a little robot in a flower field on the cover? A WHOLE lot. Oleander have their instruments tuned (and distorted at the same time) to perfection. They can also play with a superlative amount of talent, with lead singer Thomas Flowers' distinctive vocals. To many people, this album is a breath of fresh air over " Shrinking The Blob", which some found to be inferior.
Here is a track breakdown:

1. You'll Find Out- Excuse me, but did someone see or hear an alien UFO land on the beginning of this song? Very different and distorted. Hence, does this recall the opening style or sound to Nirvana's "Stay Away?"-4/10

2. Stupid- Better than the first; completely listenable. Ends a little bit too abruptly, though.-5/10

3. Down When I'm Loaded- THE BEST FRIGGIN' SONG ON THIS WHOLE DAMN ALBUM!!! This was also a radio hit a while back. Perfectly paced song, with excellent alternative guitar hooks.-11/10

4. Why I'm Here- Just ONE step down from the previous song. This has Nirvanaesque hooks to it. Hence, the beginning of "Heart-Shaped Box."-9/10

5. I Walk Alone- If I could squeeze in my rating between "Why I'm Here" and "Down When I'm Loaded"-well I actually can, making this song a 10/10. I can also REALLY relate to this song.

6. Lost Cause- Ummmm...I don't know. I think they could have put a little more time and effort into this song. The guitar choruses are also annoyingly repetitive.-3/10

7. Where Were You Then?- A very fine song, but the guitar riffs this time on the solo sound random and contrived.-6/10

8. Shrinking The Blob- SUCKS.-1/10

9. How Could I?- A beautiful, beautiful ballad, and very ,melodic. Slow and relaxing. I think that every rock album should have a cool-down song like this.-10/10

10. Boy's Don't Cry- This song seems like a filler, but I have to admit it IS good, although a LITTLE bit fast.-7/10

11. Never Again- The closing song on this CD, and also a very promising one! It seems like Thomas is talking about breaking some of his bad habits on this song. Role model? You be the judge.-8/10

Well, that's it. Hopefully this information will guide you to a classic CD. In other words, February Son by Oleander. Buy it now.

2 out of 5 stars Throw Back.......2003-04-16

Some say that grunge ended metal forever. Evidently unaware that grunge was itself metal; Oleander set out to disprove the elusive myth. They are a throw back's throw back, representing the leading edge of metal before it descended in the self indulgent clichés of the hair bands. Hard, edgy and only slightly screechy, Oleander will doubtless please old Dio fans who are looking for a return to the good old days, when Devils were devils and rock bands thought that loud meant good. To anyone weaned on the alt craze of the nineties, they will just seem dated.

5 out of 5 stars Lifts you up and makes the days shine.......2007-01-21

I found this CD when looking for Chris' pop song "When did you fall in love with me." (not on this CD). I'd never heard of him before, but I recognized him somehow. Although I rarely buy Christian CDs, (Amy Grant the exception), I decided to try this. I put it in my car's CD player and never took it out for 2 weeks. It lifted my spirits beyond anything I can explain. Other reviewers have said Chris' music is a mixture of campfire sing-a-longs and being with friends. It is all that. Master songwriter & storyteller. I especially like that he doesn't preach, that he leaves lots of room for being less than perfect and for being confused & doubtful at times. Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars A Fun Collection.......2005-07-10

This is a very enjoyable CD. I have heard some of Rice's songs previously, but this is the first album of his that I have heard in its entirety.

His music is very mellow, but it has good lyrics and a pleasant sound. The main reason that I bought this CD was that I thought my daughter would enjoy 'Cartoons'. I found that it was not the only 'fun' song on this album. 'Billy Joe McGuffrey' is another great song for kids. Actually, I have enjoyed both of those as well as several of the others also. I particulary like 'Deep Enough to Dream'.

If you have a pre-teen or teenager, I would really recommend this for a couple of fun songs. It is also enjoyable for adults.

4 out of 5 stars Great Stuff But Do We Need This CD?.......2005-02-11

For the second year in a row, we get a compilation CD from Chris Rice.

This one starts off with six tracks from various live performances. I must admit I really enjoyed the slightly different take on some classic Chris Rice songs. "Deep Enough to Dream" is especially enjoyable in this setting.

Up next are three songs from non-Chris Rice records. "Billy Joe McGuffrey" originated on the soundtrack for Jonah: A VeggieTales Movie. "Calling out Your Name" was originally on the tribute to Rich Mullins. Finally, "Nothin'" comes from Exodus. I am thrilled to have these songs on a Chris Rice CD.

Lastly, we get some fan favorites directly from their original recording, like any best of. What's interesting to me is the inclusion of two songs from his Living Room Sessions projects, two CD's that got passed over in his best of last year.

Don't get me wrong, I love Chris's music. My disappointment is that there is really little new here for fans. While I enjoy best of's, we just had one last year. It's been two years since we had anything new from Chris, and I'm more then ready for it. This CD would have been great in another few years with another project or two under his belt. I would even feel differently if it were cheaper. But released like this, it feels more like a marketing ploy then anything else.

If you aren't familiar with Chris's music, this would be a great place to start. I just love it. But die hard fans will want to consider if they really want to add this to their collection.

Recorded at Bill Graham's legendary San Francisco concert hall during two shows in February 1969, this disc sounds like a practice session recorded in the morning after a particularly long, rough night. The vocals fall flat too often and rhythmic cohesion is always one measure away--too many noodly, irrelevant notes are slathered atop every song. Some of this can be explained by the absence of one former Byrd. In turning the band towards their country-rock bent and then splitting after less than a year, Gram Parsons left a hole that could never really be filled, not even by the nimble-fingered Clarence White. Their take on the Louvin Brothers' classic "Christian Life," for instance, is ragged, but not right. But the CD certainly has merit for more than just archivists and obsessives: the straight-ahead folk-rock material does shine with the "Nashville West" flavorings. There's a fiery "King Apathy III"; a revelatory, subtle version of "Bad Night at the Whiskey"; and a truly emotional take of "He Was a Friend of Mine," especially poignant a year after the assassinations of Martin Luther King Jr. and Bobby Kennedy. --Mike McGonigal

4 out of 5 stars underrated.......2006-06-03

The Byrds 'Live at the Fillmore West ~ February 1969' is a wonderful companion disc to the other live Byrds venture, 'Untitled/Unissued'. Together, these three discs offer a rich compendium of The Byrds live persona in the late 1960's and early 1970's. Still missing in action, and presumably not available, are live recordings of the first incarnation of the band, featuring Chris Hillman and David Crosby. With John York on bass, this recording features one of the shorter-lived Byrd's line-ups.

Compared with 'Untitled/Unissued', the Fillmore West disc is much more heavily steeped in traditional country and the burgeoning country-rock sound pioneered by The Byrds. But if you're a fan of the band's pop, rock, and psychedelic offerings, there is plenty of that fare to be had as well. In fact, although ten of the sixteen tracks would have to be categorized as basically country, five of those tracks are under 2:10 in length. The lengthier rock tracks (especially the 9:47 medley of classic Byrd tracks offered on track five) consume about an equal amount of time on the disc as the country offerings. The country offerings are also collected at the beginning of the disc, so whatever your interest may be, you can easily select that portion of the recordings to hear.

The first four tracks on the disc are hard-core country music, beginning with a rendition of 'Nashville West' which blows away the version offered on 'Untitled'. 'You're Still On My Mind' features a nice slide guitar sound from Clarence White, as do many of the country tracks, and 'Pretty Boy Floyd' is a 'Ballad of Bonnie and Clyde' clone from Woody Guthrie. 'Drug Store Truck Driving Man' is a send-up of a down-home redneck, ironically using redneck music to roast him. Tracks six through ten return to the country sounds. 'Buckaroo' is a country-rock instrumental, while 'The Christian Life' is a slowed-down country-gospel track. I would also classify track 13, 'Sing Me Back Home', a melodious prison ballad from Merle Haggard as country, as well as the worthy version of 'He Was a Friend of Mine' (perhaps more folk oriented), the slowed-down melodic dirge for JFK, RFK, and MLK.

The main attraction on the disc, however, is one of the finest medley's I've ever come across. Excellance in musicianship combines with classic compositions and seamless segue's on track five, a suite featuring nearly full performances of 'Turn, Turn, Turn', 'Mr. Tambourine Man' and 'Eight Miles High'. White's guitar runs contain more notes per second than many elite axemen can hope to generate, and his skill is highlighted in a remarkable working relationship with Roger McGuinn's familiar 12-string Rickenbacker. A mind-blowing fuzz-tone guitar bridge from White puts the icing on 9:47 of sheer musical bliss.

More rock highlights include the crunching psychedelic rock of 'King Apathy III', the slowed-down rock of 'Bad Night At the Whiskey', and the mid-tempo Bob Dylan/Rick Danko composition 'This Wheel's On Fire', which manages somehow to combine both Dylan and The Band's traditional sounds. The remaining two tracks rival the intensity of the earlier Byrds medley. The rendition of 'So You Want To Be a Rock 'N' Roll Star' burns with intensity, rocking all over the 'Untitled' version, which is no slouch in itself. And the closing track, 'Chimes of Freedom' comes off as a modern day 'Star Spangled Banner'. It could be perhaps a more fitting substitute for the national anthem than 'God Bless America'.

I believe this disc is seriously underrated. I've read many reviews that criticize this recording as uninspired, weak performances, poorly recorded. I found none of those criticisms to be valid. The liner notes from David Fricke aren't terribly extensive, but do give sufficient background on this particular performance, and how the band had been evolving in the late 1960's and early 1970's. The graphics and photographs of the band are also not extensive, but what is offered is illuminating. 'Live At the Fillmore West' is certainly essential for any serious Byrd's fan, and may well supplement the collection of more casual fans of the Byrd's diverse musical forms. Four stars only because I'm not a big country music fan.

3 out of 5 stars Neat to hear but heard better.......2005-10-15

If your a diehard Sweet heart of the Rodeo fan type of Byrds material you will love this Live 1969 concert CD, but for me I liked the 1967 Montery Pop Festival volume 2 CD that came out in 1992 better. It has more classic Byrds material that were on the first three albums etc..before the 1968 Rodeo album made in nashville etc.. there are live cuts on the Byrds Untitled two record album (CD) by a later Byrds lineup. I also saw at a Convention Center CD sale (Dealers tables) a Bootleg of a Byrds whole Live show in 1971 at the fillmore east (2 CD's long) the guy that had it only took cash I didn't have $40.00 he said it was best he ever heard etc..etc.. Why can't these record companies sell this kind of stuff instead of what they do now. Here is the best byrds line-up with the best byrds concert ever in 1971 recorded on a illegal bootled two CD set (Hello dummies) guess what the fans want this kind of stuff you know that is legal. What gems are these record companies holding on to an why are they waiting for the rest of the Byrds to die so they can screw them out of royality's to be made from this stuff , God
help them see the light. There should be a 7 CD box set with photo book of live Byrds concerts ( all 7 years of line ups )
and if they don't have the master tapes etc.. just go out and buy up all the bootlegs and put them out in the Box set you dummies

5 out of 5 stars Gram Who??.......2005-04-16

And you thought the Flying Burrito Brothers embodied country-rock! One listen to this disc and you'll think otherwise. McGuinn/White/Parsons/York crank out some of the grittiest, roughest, rockin' sounding country music ever. And some of these cuts are the definitive versions of the songs..."Drug Store Truck Driving Man" is exponentially better than its studio counterpart. Same goes for "Pretty Boy Floyd" "Bad Night At The Whiskey" and, to a lesser extent "He Was a Friend of Mine." But McGuinn's vocals, man they really get inside of you, making you wonder "Gram who?"
But the real star of the show is Clarence White. I've never heard a guitar growl the way his Telecaster does. "Buckaroo" is all him, and his solo on "Close Up The Honky Tonks" is mindbending, literally.
If anyone knows where I could find some more official live recordings of the late Byrds, please E-Mail me!

5 out of 5 stars These Byrds Can Play.......2005-04-04

I don't know why the gods smiled on us and somehow these recordings were made, but they were. One listen to Clarence White work out on "Buckaroo" and you know (knew, if you were there) you are (were) in the presence of something really unusual and very, very cool - total mastery of the instrument and an intense, creative and soulful musical and rhythmic spirit. (Compare with the Buck Owens original and you'll know what I'm saying). White, who had been playing electric guitar only a couple years at that point, has simply never been equalled in the genre. And actually only equalled at all by very few other guitar players. OK - the other guys are good too, esp. Parsons, the drummer, who understood what Clarence was trying to do. This band was just beginning to feel its power, and you can hear it. McGuinn actually seems to be having a good time, and he sings and plays the country stuff OK and the folk and rock material very well indeed. Ahead of their time and underrated - classic Byrds.

4 out of 5 stars Under appreciated line-up.......2005-03-05

Right from the beginning a lot of people thought this version of the Byrds was bogus, having only Rodger McGuinn from the original lineup. While their studio recordings, still very good but a notch below their classic albums weren't big sellers, an amazing thing happened. They became an awsome live band, which no other version ever was. Just listen to the ragged performance on the Montery Pop Festival box set or any of the dozens of bootlegs around and you can see what I mean. What the Live At The Fillmore West CD lacks in sound quality it certainly makes up for in the intensity of the performance. There are a few off vocals here & there that can be attributed to the dismal state of on stage monitors at the time, but if you like the Byrds give this one a try. I don't think you'll be diasppointed.

Enclosure 2, all four cds, is curated as a sprawling notebook filled with sounds and speech instead of sketches and words. Of any Partch recording extant, it gives the best picture of the man--as the curmudgeonly, extremely innovative misanthrope that he was, as the composer who was impossibly unlike anyone else before or since. The essence of Partch's music reflects the history of the world--from his particular perspective--the imaginings of ancient Greece to the influence of Chinese musical melodrama, all propelled by homemade instruments based on a 43-tone scale named things like the "Kithara" and the "Boo." These recordings also give the best sense of his philosophy of language in music. Lamenting the whole time how text in music had become detached from the language of everyday life, Partch ran music alongside newsboys' cries and hobos' diaries, following the forms, cadence, and dynamics of speech, rather than the other way around. From his juvenilia (a wonderful song he wrote at 18) to a 45-minute segment of his wake in 1974, the first steps towards exploring Partch's sparkling works fully are made here. --Robin Edgerton

    5 out of 5 stars Amazing!.......2007-04-15

Great CD! A nice addition to 1964 The Tribute's LIVE CD. I like both of their CD's, but this one is quite different, as it captures the Beatles as they sounded in the early days in the studio, where the main goal was not just to get the records note for note. If you want the songs to be note for note, you'll need to buy their "All You Need Is LIve" CD!, which is NOTE FOR NOTE!! After over 20 years, these guys have it all down pat. I have seen them over 10 times. GO SEE THEM when they are in your town! The only other Beatles Band out there that is a little better is "The Fab Four" (from Southern CA), who regularly play a permanent home on the Las Vegas Strip. They do all the Beatle eras, not just 1963 and 1964 music!, but they don't have any CD's like 1964 the Tribute.

Highyly recommend this CD as well their other one!!

5 out of 5 stars Blows me away!.......2006-06-06

You can tell that these guys are doing it for the love of the music that the Beatles created. 1964 -The Tribute goes to great
lengths to present the music as the fan back in 1964 would have seen them! While the facial looks are not quite as close (how can you expect it to be anyway?) as you would like I found that while watching them try squinting just a little and you would never know the difference! The man (Mark I believe is his name) nails Johns onstage movements to a tee. He even sounds like him when he speaks. The gentleman playing Paul is not quite as close but hey, who cares the sound is spot-on! All of these gentlemen look the part from a distance. This is the only concert I have not wanted to sit on the front row because seeing their faces more closely would break the illusion. I give this group a 5 star rating! They deserve it. Groups like this will help preserve the legacy The Beatles left us. It's the next best thing to a real concert that we know can never happen again....

4 out of 5 stars A Beatles tribute band does a bunch of their early non-hit songs.......2005-11-15

1964...The Tribute are apparently the number one Beatles tribute show on Earth (according to "Rolling Stone," and not the group's own website). The group ranked 167 out of the Top 200 Box Office grossing bands for 2004, which, you have to admit, has to be pretty good for a tribute band (I mean, do you think there is actually another tribute band in the top 200? I would sort of hate to think so). The year 1964 is when the Beatles appeared on "The Ed Sullivan Show" and shook the United States out of its depression in the wake of the assassination of President Kennedy. By the end of that year the Beatles had produced their first four albums, putting out the soundtrack for "A Hard Day's Night" and "Beatles for Sale," and while almost all of the songs on "Nine Hours in November" come from the 1963-64 period in concert the group does cover songs released prior to "Sgt. Pepper," certainly a natural dividing line in terms of both looks and music for the Fab Four.

"Nine Hours In November" is an album cut in that amount of time at that time of year. The idea was to go and cut a record just like the Beatles did in the early day, where you go into the studio, everybody plays at once, and you get it right. I think this makes "If I Fell" the key track on the album, because it seems to me that these four are trying to capture the feel of when the Beatles did that song in "A Hard Day's Night." The songs selected are all from the 1963-64 period with the additional qualification that none of them are #1 songs by the Beatles, of which there were a lot at that time. So instead of "I Want to Hold Your Hand" and "She Loves You" we get "It Won't Be Long," "I'll Follow the Sun," and "And I Love Her." They even cover several songs the Beatles were covering in the beginning of their career with "Slow Down," "Boys," "Kansas City" and Chuck Berry's "Rock and Roll Music." The guy playing George even gets to do "Don't Bother Me," which is nice because I think the first Harrison song by the Beatles is a pretty good one and it should not be forgotten as such.

The goal here is obviously to have fun recreating the sound of the Beatles from the early days. This is even clearer on their live album, "All You Need Is Live," where you can here women screaming during all of the songs and hitting the harmony on the start of "I'm a Loser" inspires a round of admiration and a second go at it. Granted, listening to a tribute band on CD does not really make sense; the point is to go see them perform live and have fun pretending you are at a Beatles concert, which is something most of us never got to do (my cousin Donna went to the show at Shea Stadium and I can remembering starring at her tickets on her bulletin board insanely jealous).

So listening to a studio album by a tribute band seems like the worst of both worlds, but these guys clearly love what they are doing. The guy doing John sounds more like John than the guy doing Paul sounds like Paul, but their harmonies are pretty good and with early Beatles songs that is the main attraction. Plus (and here is the reason I rounded up on this one), they are clearly making a concerted effort to sound like the Beatles in concert and not like they are performing the recordings live. That is a more flattering form of imitation as far as I am concerned. Still, I suspect that this album will be bought mainly by fans of 1964...The Tribute who have seen them in concert and who want to support their attempt to recreate the music and feelings of Beatlemania.

5 out of 5 stars A DO NOT MISS- AN ALL TIME GREAT PERFORMANCE.......2006-06-19

Bjoerling only sang one performance at the Met of this work with Sayao- fortunately it was captured on tape.

If you only can have one performance by Bjoerling - this is it. Warm, lyrical, passionate and ardent the voice flows like warm honey and in the banishment scene turns to hot lava - even some non-Bjoerling fans acknowledge his supremacy in this role. Sayao IS JULIETTE- ardent and tender with sadness when appropriate with a shimmering voice- she phrases like the great artist that she is- and she was physically beautiful.

I saw Corelli twice in the role- he was exiting and looked the part - but really not in Bjoerling's league in this role.

I prefer this opera to Gounod's more famous Faust.

There are highlights of Romeo & Juliette with Bjoerling form a 1940 performance from Sweden where he is even better. I have it on vinyl and never have seen it on CD.
