5 out of 5 stars THIS BAD PENNY CAN KEEP COMING BACK AGAIN AND AGAIN..........2001-03-20

Jez Lowe is one of the undiscovered treasures of contemporary folk music. His writing has emotion, conscience, intelligence and individuality. The songwriting here (as on all of his many releases) is first-rate, and the arrangements are tasteful, not over-wrought -- a trap into which all too many artists fall. The songs here give the listener a crystal-clear look into the lives of their characters -- whether the northern English coal miners among which Lowe grew up, a parent looking back at a disintegrated family, or someone from the younger generation speaking to a member of the old -- and we come away changed, more knowledgable about the feelings and outlook of others. There's even a song about a talking dog -- done up with some wry humor, to be sure, but containing an important warning to humans about the mistreatment of our animal brothers and sisters. Lowe sings most of the leads (one notable exception is long-time Bad Penny Bev Sanders' fine rendition of 'Alibi child'), with able backing from the rest of the band. The instruments are all acoustic, with the occasional, tasteful use of a keyboard. These songs will get into the listeners heart and soul and live there for years -- the true test of fine writing. Check out other great releases from Jez -- 'The parish notices' is his newest studio recording, and he's just released a 2-cd live set. He'll be touring the US this fall with James Keelaghan, a much-admired Canadian singer-songwriter.

Another excellent album from a premier modern folk troubadour. Jez Lowe specializes in lilting folk music and thoughtful introspective lyrics, often based on the trials of the downtrodden. Check out the excellent `Aloysius', a strangely affecting ode to a dog (who complains of the poor treatment of his breed and warns that this cannot go on forever). Highly touted by similarly minded folkie Richard Thompson, Lowe will also appeal to fans of The Proclaimers, Nick Lowe and Lyle Lovett. All the tracks are top notch, but pay special attention to `Sons Of The Century', `The Guilts' and `Workhouse'. `Alibi Child' (which is also excellent) features a superb guest vocalist. No fan of Celtic music could resist such a stellar offering.

my favourite jez lowe CD... although the new line up of the bad pennies (as of Fylde 99) is fantastic... i eagerly await their next album!

Bought this cd based on owning The Parish Notices (very good). The first 3 songs get this cd off to a solid start, but then things take a turn to a very quiet folk sound. Good lyrics but not much to get your toes tapping. I'd recommend The Parish Notices for more of a pop/folk experience.

Richard Thompson is a big fan of fellow Englishman Jez Lowe, and you don't often get a better recommendation than that. He's got good reason to like him, as Lowe writes some pretty great songs. He and his band then knock them out with British Isles fervor, dressing up arrangements with a plethora of acoustic instruments including cittern, mandolin, dulcimer, harmonica, fiddle, string bass, and pennywhistle. The result is an irresistible, and irrepressibly English, thinking-man's dance party. Lowe scores extra high marks on the lilting yet driving "Glad Rags Again," the gentle "Sod All," and the jaunty "Limping Drinker's Polka." --Michael Ruby

5 out of 5 stars Well Worth Noticing.......2001-03-05

I was fortunate enough to catch Jez when he was passing through Portland, OR recently. He was outstanding. I would have loved to have also seen the Bad Pennies as well, but it's hard to take your group with you when you've got a folkie budget.

Jez has a very fine and expressive tenor. His musicianship and that of the Bad Pennies is quite good. The lyrics of the songs range from very good to outstanding. On this album, I especially like "The Parish Notices", "Glad Rags Again", "Propping", "Idle Time", and "Had Away, Gan On." The rhythms of the songs are quite infectious--in a good sense.

He also has just come out with a double CD called "Live at the Davy Lamp." Hopefully, it will be available in the U.S. shortly. It has the very excellent cuts, "Just Like Moses" and "The Bergen." It's a very addictive double CD.

Check out Jez and see if you like him. If you do, pass the word around. He deserves much more public notice than he's getting in the U.S. I first heard him, like a previous reviewer, on NPR.

      5 out of 5 stars Top Notch.......2001-02-08

I bought this album because it had a sticker on it that said that Richard Thompson thought Jez Lowe was the greatest thing since sliced bread, and gOd bless him, he was right. Lowe is a folkie straight out of the Thompson tradition, with a somewhat more Celtic feel. This is his finest album, excellent from beginning to end. Lowe's fine singing is made more appealing by his accent, which he himself mocks (`a Scotsman said my songs were shite and me accent was a scandal and the only true born Johnny's left were Sting and Johnny Handle'-you have to love lyrics like that!). His songs are insightful and richly detailed, and his feel for the material is obvious. He is especially good with material describing the trials of the common man (More sample lyrics: `you spent your life in the land of plenty while I've spent mine where the bowls are empty...blood's no thicker than the cold no North Sea no more'). It's rare that you find a folkie this good and this lively. His music swoons and it bounces, it is catchy to the point of irresistible and so danceable you'll be tempted to get up and go every time you here it. Will please fans of The Proclamers, Bap Kennedy, The Irish Rovers and Nick Lowe. Standouts include `Glad Rags Again', `Propping' `Spitting Cousins' and `Had Away, Gan On'. Unconditionally recommended.

      5 out of 5 stars Don't miss this one!!!.......1999-02-17

Without a doubt, my favorite album from 1998. Jez covers every emotion in this release and a couple I wasn't expecting. After listening to this music on and off over the last six months or so, I still find myself humming tunes from it. Treat yourself!

      5 out of 5 stars brilliant songwriting.......1998-10-29

Jez Lowe is an amazing songwriter who writes his own British Isles folk tunes that sound like old traditional songs as handed down by Elvis Costello. A delight for fans of Celtic music and singer/songwriters alike. A great record.

5 out of 5 stars wonderful lyrics and melodies.......1998-09-11

Heard this artist for the first time on NPR a few months ago. Have been very happy with the CD. Melodies are compelling and lyrics are moving/fun. And - my 9 and 6 year old love it too.

      Product Description

Jez's first release on the indie label, Tantobie. Recorded live at The Davy Lamp Folk Club in May of 2000, this 2-CD set includes lyrics, photos, slide shows and a video. This album is a showcase of Jez's Northern English wit and his brilliant ability to tell a universal story with local characters.

5 out of 5 stars My favorite CD for the last 2 years and so unexpected!.......2004-04-11

I loved this CD - Saw Jez Lowe live 2 yrs ago and liked his lyrics, delivery, humor. Bought the Live at the Davy Lamp CD and discovered the Bad Pennies. Just a fantastic combination. They are more than a back up bank-- and add a great deal of warmth and vibrancy.

This 2 CD set became my favorite instantly. Lovely clear, crisp voices. The songs are often 20th century topics with traditional roots to the instrumentation. Many earworms...They are often running thru my head. A nice combination ballads and uptempo to the cuts on these CDs.

Brought them into work and they were a hit with my co-workers. If you are a traditional folkie I'm sure you will enjoy this disc. And my non-traditional folk music friends have enjoyed it also. It's still my favorite. Only problem has been bursting out singing along full volume when the earphones are plugged in.

5 out of 5 stars This is the Best Place to Start with Jez.......2002-10-30

I had never heard of Jez Lowe and the Bad Pennies, despite twenty years of hanging around on the fringes of folk concerts and so on. Then, last Easter, I saw him at an Australian Blues festival, where he was somewhat inappropriately buried on the bill, in the smallest and least prestigious venue. To cut a long story short, he and the Bad Pennies absolutely stole the show.

They utterly charmed me, and I immediately went and bought this double live CD afterwards. The CD is simply one of the best live folk concerts we are ever likely to have committed to disc. There are numerous songs that just go straight into the memory bank, with catchy choruses, wonderful melodies and clever lyrics imbued with a sense of a traditional way of life that is fast passing away in England. And there are few writers who chronicle this better than Jez Lowe.

Beautiful songs like "Black Diamonds", "Old Durham Gaol", "High Part of the Town", "Tom-Tom" have seamlessly passed into my household's singalongs as we prepare our evening meal, or when we go on roadtrips.

Most folk music from the British Isles that we hear tends to derive from Ireland or Scotland, but Jez is not from those traditions at all. While he has one foot well based in the glorious Northern Folk traditions of England, it has also become clear to me with repeated listening that he also has a link to the music-hall traditions of the North, some of which have turned up in the music of many great English bands over the years, not the least of which were the Beatles.

Jez Lowe has the rare knack of writing modern songs on modern topics that you feel sure must be traditional songs, even though you have never heard them before. Why there are not more artists covering his songs is a bit of a mystery to me, as they are full of hooks and often quite jaunty.

Jez is also a great entertainer on stage, and his band are pretty special too. There are a swag of older CDs to get, but this is a great compilation, with a good atmosphere, quite a lot of variety, and an excellent CD-ROM enhanced site on the second disc (with lyrics, photos and the like).

A good value introduction to a great (and under appreciated) artist. My personal find (and most played CD) of the year.

5 out of 5 stars A GREAT PICK AS AN INTRODUCTION, OR FOR AN ESTABLISHED FAN.......2002-06-30

This 2-disc set from the great English singer-songwriter Jez Lowe is a superb collection of some of his finest songs -- there are classics from his entensive catalogue here, as well as some newer selections. The incarnation of the Bad Penneys that accompany him here make for a fine band, ably backing him, doing grand justice to all of the tunes. The recording is excellent as well -- the music and vocals are clear, and the 'live' atmosphere is present but not overbearing, a tricky balance in concert recordings. Additionally, there's a wealth of extra material available on one of the discs by way of the CD-ROM drive on your compuuter -- lots of photos, lyrics, and other information to keep you busy.

Lowe is one of the finest songwriters to emerge from the UK in our time -- it's a pity (and a genuine surprise) that he's not more widely known. If you've never experienced his work, this is a fine place to start -- and trust me, you'll want to explore further. Beyond this recording, I can heartily recommend TENTERHOOKS, as well as BEDE WEEPS -- but everything he's done is of the highest quality.
