A RECORDING FOR ALL LIBERATED LADIES --- AND MEN!.......2006-11-16
Think Amanda McBroom and Lori Lieberman. Think Bonnie Kolac, K.T. Oslin, and Janis Ian. Think Carole King on a good day. Put them all together and they spell Nancy Ford and her lyricist/partner Gretchen Cryer. Take 12 really good songs ("Clearly the most imaginative and melodic score heard in New York all season."-- Soho Weekly News. "Brash, funny, very agreeable in its brash and funny way, and moreover, it touches a special emotional chord for our times."-- N.Y. Post) and weave them into a story about a forty-year-old songwriter/performer trying to make a comeback and, in doing so, discovers who she really is. Yup, it's a feminist musical, one that will certainly resonate with a lot of people, male and female alike -- especially us "sensitive, new-age guys."
Originally produced by Joseph Papp of Public Theater fame (" . . . he liked the music and Gretchen's performance as Heather . . . "), the show initially met a lot of resistance from the critics. However, it caught on and enjoyed a run of 1,165 performances and during its run featured several top Broadway actresses in the leading role. In the liner notes, Gretchen Cryer reflects on the Wednesday night discussions after the show: "The subject of the show (sexual politics) was very controversial at the time, so the audiences were passionate. Fights between husbands and wives broke out, perfect strangers embraced and exchanged phone numbers, others stalked out, divorces ensued, newly discovered feelings were vented, lives changed course, and Wednesday nights sold out."
Every song is a polished gem, and I especially like Don Scardino's beautiful reading of "In a Simple Way I Love You." Cryer, Scardino and the rest of the cast are all wonderful, as is The Liberated Man's Band backing them up. Being a liberated man and a SNAG, I enthusiastically recommend this album. (My wife made me say that.) Seriously, go to Fynsworth Alley's web site and make the leap. You'll be glad you did.
Also, if you haven't yet done so, check out Amanda McBroom, Lori Lieberman, Bonnie Kolac, K.T. Oslin, Janis Ian, Carole King and the other liberated ladies. I love 'em all, and I love "I'm Getting My Act Together and Taking It on the Road."

English is an asset and a drawback.......2004-07-20
Unfortunately, the performance suffers from being sung in English. The singers declaim their parts with such proper British diction that Carmen comes across as a school marm. The spoken dialog is delivered beat for deliberate beat and is dripping with reverb. It makes the plaza, tavern and mountain pass all sound like a sewer pipe.
This is a good first Carmen for someone trying to understand the work. The libretto itself is a good investment for further listening. For an enjoyable performance with an emphasis on character and action, I recommend Regina Resnik on the London Double Decker set.
You Will Love Opera After Hearing Carmen In English.......2004-02-09
The real strength of this version is the dynamic drama. With the advantage of being sung in English, we get better insight on characters' emotions and motives, and we understand the drama a lot better. Carmen is all about great drama. Bizet drew the plot from the French writer Prosper Merimee's dark short story. Carmen is the ultimate femme fatale- a devil-may-care, sexy Gypsy living in Spain, seduces the conservatively raised soldier Don Jose, stealing him away from his fiancee, the passive Micaela, living a life of underground smuggling and rowdy taverns. "Habanera" and "The Gypsy Song and Dance" are very expressive of Carmen's extraordinarily liberal lifestyle. Don Jose, however, has fallen deeply in love- as he shows us in his song/aria "The Flower Song". But Carmen soon becomes tired of his constancy. Don Jose wants a committed, monogamous relationship with Carmen. But Carmen will not submit to love, since she is first and foremost a carnal creature. Eventually, she falls for the handsome Toreador Escamillo. Don Jose, consumed by jealousy, stabs Carmen at a bullfight after Carmen declares her love for Escamillo and rejects Don Jose's love. Don Jose's crazed, obscessive personality shines through in the English version as well. This tragedy has been done in English before so don't think this is the first time. Back in the 50's, there was a film, starring black actors "Carmen Jones" which was treated the same way as this opera- more like an English Broadway musical and with the dubbed singing voice of Marilyn Horne as Carmen. All in all, this recording is excellent.
A wholly credible "Carmen" -- finally!.......2003-09-17
I love Carmen!.......2003-08-15
And what of this recording? Carmen sits well in English, so it is good to hear in translation, although some of the detais in the text jar. Escamillo refers to Jose as "my dear", which sounds rather peculiar, and the guide's line to Micaela: "it's not exactly inviting, is it?" sounds distinctly Middle England rather than Rural Spain. Some of the performers, not least Carmen herself, make the words work, although there are long tracts, especially with the chorus, where the language is distinctly indistinct.
The soloists are, by and large, strong. Patricia Bardon's deep, Handel-friendly voice adapts well to Carmen and she colours the music with phenomenal detail, sounding sexy and provocative from the start with an edge of pride and anger that emerges as the show goes on. She is out of her depth above the stave, though, and some extra top notes in the second act don't show her off to her best advantage. I have previously said that Julian Gavin is poorly served by recordings, though here he sounds much more even and gives a thrilling and musical performance (but his wooden spoken lines let him down). Mary Plazas is a lovely Micaela, rich-voiced and sincere (and word-perfect), but Garry Magee sounds miscast as Escamillo, lacking the ballast at the bottom of the voice to do justice to this tricky role.
The supporting cast is good (Mary Hegarty seems to do nothing but Frasquita these days!) but the really treasurable thing is the conducting. Stepping out of Italian Ottocento, David Parry turns his hand to this French Comedie with an appropriate lightness of touch. His pacing and handling of the set pieces is exemplary and the enrtractes go with a real swing.
A pleasure, then, for the Carmen naive or a novelty for the Carmen-acquainted. I nearly wrote Carmen-weary - but I don't think it's possible.

Imperfect transer, but music a must!.......2006-06-21
The key point is that the music on these two albums represent Innes at the height of his powers and they are must-haves for any fan of his, the Bonzos, Python or electic music in general.
Particular highlights are "Catch Phrase", the pre-Rutles version of "Shangri-La", "Three Piece Suite", "Spontaneous" and IBOR's quirky "Theme".
So the recording is not the best. That's true. The music, however, is. (And since I can't give a 4.5, I'm erring on the side of the music, which is perfection.)
Poor Quality.......2006-03-24

Fine orchestral music for wartime movies.......2002-04-06
An interesting thing to mention is the admiration Bernard Herrmann, "one of the most influential film composers of all time," had for British composers like Elgar and Vaughan Williams, among others. In regards to film music, i don't know if one had an influence on the other, but it is quite significant that Herrmann enjoyed the music of Vaughan Williams : As he declared in an article for the Musical Times, "in reading the warm and affectionate tributes paid to the late Vaughan Williams by his many friends, I began to think about the personal enrichment that his great art had brought to my musical life [...]." In the United States, Herrmann conducted some works by the eminent Englishman - notably the London Symphony (Symphony No.2) and the Oboe Concerto.
Most of the tracks here were composed in the 1940's and early 50's. The record includes the fascinating Prelude to "49th Parallel", as well as solemn and atmospheric music from "The Story of a Flemish Farm". In the same vein, "Coastal Command", a wartime epic, reveals some of the best aspects of the British composer : Tension and disquietude are sustained, along with very enjoyable music ("Dawn Patrol" and "U-boats" are highlights here). In the "Three Portraits" - also finely recorded by Previn on RCA - we recognize a typical "mood" that belongs to this most amazing composer. I enjoyed "Poet", in particular, for its sheer beauty.
The numbers are appropriately well-rendered by conductor Andrew Penny and RTE ; they reproduce faithfully the Vaughan Williams "signature" sound. It's undeniable that we have here a most interesting soundtrack music disc. The dark and, sometimes, heavy atmosphere of those vintage films is really what you hear on this cd (of course, the dominant theme is war). Though Rumon Gamba (Chandos) provides excellent renditions, i still favor Andrew Penny for his fine delineation in "Coastal Command". V W was convincing in his film music writing and certainly proves a delightful illustration of the fusion of two art forms. *****

Gorgeous!.......2004-05-31
Take a Chance on Latouche.......2001-02-19
The choice of material is excellent--ranging from haunting "art" songs to snappy specialty/comedy numbers ("The Surrealist", describing a Salvadore Dali-type artist's marriage to a bearded lady is a particular gem) to belty Broadway showstoppers. Over half of the numbers are previously either unrecorded or available for the first time on CD, making this a must-have for collectors. Of these, my favorite is "Plain Words" which was written for Candide (for which Latouche finally received the credit "Other Lyrics By"); the Leonard Bernstein melodies for this song later showed up in "Oh Happy We" and a "Mazurka" in the 1956 Broadway production.
The presentation of the songs is excellent, and the four-person cast give uniformly fine performances (I was struck by the soprano, Donna English, who sounds uncannily like Barbara Cook in the above-mentioned "Plain Words" and also stands out in "Windflowers" from The Golden Apple). Anyone who enjoys Broadway-style music and is willing to venture outside the familar favorites will certainly be pleased by this album.
important stuff.......2000-12-07
The cast is superb, and there is a wealth of fascinating material here. Erik Haagensen, who put the show together, is especially to be commended for giving us an opportunity to rediscover an interesting, and at times bedeviling figure in the history of musical theatre.
If for nothing else, get this CD for the performance of LAZY AFTERNOON, which both in the theatre, and on the record is startling.
