Based in Ireland, the Revs (for the uninitiated) are a three-piece alt rock band who call to mind everyone from Blondie to The Ramones. This 12-track lp is a winner, in many ways. For instance, it contains the much-lauded single "Death of a DJ", loved by reviewers all around the globe. This song is worthy of its praise: all plaintive vocals, thumpin' toms and angsty lyrics ("disco is over-the dj's been murdered)...etc.. The Revs have captured the hearts of the Irish punters and press alike, so far. They've produced and mixed this effort themselves (no mean feat). They've been touted as the hottest Irish exports of the moment. The sound is concise, high-energy pop/rock arrangements. The album is all energetic pacing, alternative melodies and rock beats. Comprising: guitar and vocals, John McIntyre, Bass and vocals, Rory Gallagher and drums by Micky D. O'Donnell, the Revs have mastered melodic, pop-rock...heavy on the off-kilter beats and vocal harmony. If you have to listen to pop in today's atmosphere, let it be The Revs and their style of anti-establishment, beautiful rebellion. Punk at times, this album delivers upbeat drums and dueling pop/punk guitars in spades. Enjoy the pop "woos!" of "Student Daze"... the darker thrust of "Trust" and its Travis/Radiohead feel... the aforementioned infectious "Death of a DJ"... and the ebbing and flowing of the thoughtful ballad "Eire Calling". I really enjoyed the mellow "Welcome to Heaven" too. It's easy to see why this band is shifting units so rapidly. The music is easy to listen to... Not dull..... and just for the record, Bono (U2) has given his stamp of approval. What more could you want?? Smash. 2005.

Classic hardcore punk.......2007-03-05
Well, on the contrary, I think they have actually been the ones to release some of the best punk in recent years, only in the form of reissues, of long out-of-print material that would otherwise be nearly impossible to come by (save for potentially paying horror prices for the vinyl originals). Three releases that come to mind are their Articles Of Faith and B.G.K. collections, along with their reissue of the classic "Not So Quiet On The Western Front" compilation in 1999.
Continuing this trend is "We Know You Suck," which compiles most of the 1981-83 recorded output from the pride of the old Phoenix, Arizona, punk underground, J.F.A.
I want to say right off the bat that you do not have to be a skateboard enthusiast to appreciate the sound of J.F.A.; this is purely and simply excellent fast hardcore, from a time when the sound was still fresh, new, and exciting.
Part of that might be attributed to the band's youthful exuberance. The liner notes infer that singer Brian Brannon was a mere 14 in 1981 during the recording of the band's "Blatant Localism" EP, which is included on this disc along with their 1983 "Valley Of The Yakes" LP. Truth be told, some of the best hardcore bands of the era were made up of kids, and J.F.A. drive this point home, as you won't find many bands from this time period better than them.
And defying the criticism often weighed against old punk in general is the fact that these guys were in many ways actually musically accomplished. Look no further than the instrumentals included here, "Walk Don't Run" and "Baja," for proof. (There is even a cute version of the Charlie Brown theme, gone punk, for your listening enjoyment.) Michael Cornelius' bass rings out loud and clear and is always present; or for further proof, listen to what might be my favorite track on here, "I Don't Like You," where Don Redondo's guitar has a glorious, timeless period sound that is like a time capsule to 1983. And Brian Brannon's vocals are appropriately snotty and sound like they're literally fueled by a steady teenage diet of "Cokes & Snickers" (the last track on the "Blatant Localism" EP).
The band were masters of short, fast bursts of melodic hardcore punk energy, shown in songs like "Skateboard" and "We Know You Suck." And the live tracks do not detract from the overall collection; as one reviewer pointed out, some of them are even faster and just as good as the studio versions.
The layout of the CD is cool as well; it is plastered with old flyers from the band's gigging days and is interspersed with photos of each of the band members trying their hand on their decks at the local skate park.
All in all, if you love vintage hardcore punk, you will love this CD and J.F.A. Well worth the price.
Album to live by.......2005-02-28
In response to the writer who said the live tracks shouldn't be on here because of the quality...you shouldn't be listening to punk, especially not early hardcore. Most good punk music has bad recording quality, it's part of the art form. Not to mention some of the live tracks on this disc are better, in my opinion, than the studio ones.

The Best Primus Album.......2006-07-16
A curio for the fans of this bass heavy band.......2006-03-16
My own is that this is a weird recording by a bunch of guys who are seriously into what they are doing. How many other bands could put out stuff like John the Fisherman and Groundhog Day. This is great stuff in terms of being challenging listening, it certainly won't ever make an appearance on an easy listening station!
Bass heavy as you would expect - though the drums are also prominent and the production is fine, no problems with the fact that this is a live offering. All Primus fans should buy this, the reason I give it only three stars is that it is hard for the newcomer to get into. Perhaps one of the studio albums would be a better intro to this interesting band. Otherwise you may feel like you've wandered into a party where everyone is talking a different language to you!
Certainly different.

Good Sucking.......2004-11-06
Primus cuts to the chase by opening up John The Fisherman with Rush's YYZ opener. The simple fact that Primus would choose to open up with an intro made by one of the greatest bands to ever walk the earth is just a simple statement of how confident and good Primus is. John The Fisherman is fired up, as Claypool finds his groove, and he digs into his bass.
The live album then moves onto Groundhog's Day, which makes references to toothpaste cereal and porno movies, and claypool continues to tear it up on his bass with his super groovy groves. I'd also like to note the amazing guitar and drumwork on this song (and the rest of the album), because the guitar and drum work always tends to get overshadowed by Claypool's bass playing. The basswork on Groundhog's Day is close to, if not on par with Victor Wooten. Yeah, I busted out the V-man's name. And yeah, Claypool can compete.
The Heckler, track 3, has the dirty guitar, the crazy vocals, and the super crazy bassline. The Heckler is definitely Primus, and it's definitely another awesome song on a CD full of awesome music. The Heckler has an amazing moving Bassline, and the guitar work is very impressive as well.
Track 4. The Pressman, is one of my favorite Primus songs. The song opens up with the quiet but steady bassline. The song slowly picks up and climaxes as Claypool gradually gets louder. The guitar and drum work, as well as the bass work (of course) is outstanding. The Pressman sort of has some Tool-sounding-esque, which proves that Primus has in fact influenced many bands.
Jellkit, track 5, is a low point on the CD. For me anyways. It's a fast moving aggressive song with Claypool molesting his bass and the drums going nuts in the background. The Basslines is hard to play, but it lacks many of the cool improve things that Claypool puts at the end of each phrase.
Track 6...well...everyone who calls themselves a Primus fan should know about Tommy The Cat. Tommy The Cat happens to be one of the best songs ever made, and it sounds absolutely amazing live. The lyrics are slowed down, and basically the rest of the song is too. The beginning of the song has the emphasis on the drum, then the bass kicks in, and Claypool starts playing some crazy [...] that would scare most musicians. The song then proceeds, and eventually there's a little Bass and Drum ditty, which totally rocks. Tommy The Cat live is slowed down a bit, but it is just as exhilarating as if it where studio.
Pudding Time is another Primus high moment, as Claypool continues to unleash primal Bass fury. The guitar work is HIGHLY notable on this song, as it is doing some pretty crazy stuff. Claypool's quick slapping sounds amazing too.
Harold Of The Rocks is another one of the higher points on the CD, as Claypool gets in a crazy funk, and he does his voice-like singing.
The CD appropriately closes with Frizzle Fry, a perfect ending for such a perfect live album.
Primus has intensity, energy, and skill. Three components that can make any band good live. This is a must own CD for any Primus fan, or fan of good live music in general. I highly recommend this CD.

When one sets out to pay tribute to pornography, the task is a weird one. Is the Bacchanalian concept being heralded? The sex trade? The porn film tradition? Phone sex? When Howie B makes his nod to the porn industry, he merely rolls it all together, matching different sex vibes to different spots and different artists on this two-CD set. A persisting--really an undulating--moan is peppered throughout the set, giving it an uncertain erotic ambiance. But the compilation's eroticism is joined to the proverbial hip with porn's other constancy: voyeurism. Everything on the disc seems shrouded in beats and electronic atmospherics, with faint suggestions of sex emanating here and there. And because so much of the set is about suggestion and voyeurism, it's a fairly effective mood-setting ensemble. Ending this homage to porn is its most explicitly pornographic episode--and also the only tune to break the boundaries of musicality--the simple if tell-all dialogue of "Jenny Cum Lately" by Naked Funk. The song earns its chops by being something other than a song, a display of phone-sex verbal games that spare no details. It leaves the musical world behind, perhaps in astonishment of the blissful babble that takes the place of imagined-sex adventures. --Andrew BartlettCustomer Reviews:

For his third collaboration with director Sam Mendes (after American Beauty and The Shawshank Redemption), composer Thomas Newman has come up with one of his finest scores. The music mixes modern atmospheric quasi-rock touches with Middle Eastern influences (with particularly great success on the tracks "Welcome to the Suck" and "Zoomies."). The latter manifest themselves in both the beats and the instrumentation--the credits include soloists on exotic instruments such as the bowed cumbus (a type of banjo-like lute) and the processed xaphoons (a sax made of bamboo). All the more jarring, then, when the CD's handful of songs pop up. (It's quite a jolt to hear Bobby McFerrin's "Don't Worry Be Happy" after four eerie instrumental tracks.) The other song picks are obvious but well chosen: T-Rex's "Bang a Gong (Get It On)," "Naughty by Nature's "O.P.P.," Public Enemy's "Fight the Power," and Tom Waits's "Soldier's Things." Still, it's Newman's work that propels this CD, not the pick-up songs. Surprisingly, Wagner's "Ride of the Valkyries," which figures in one of the movie's most memorable scenes (when soldiers watch Apocalypse Now), isn't included here. --Elisabeth VincentelliCustomer Reviews:
You fools!.......2006-10-27
Um, hello? This is an instrumental score for the film! NOT a Various Artists soundtrack! This is, you may have noticed, an album that falls under the name of Thomas Newman! If anyone bought this expecting other music, then it's entirely their own fault. It even says on the front: "MUSIC BY THOMAS NEWMAN."
That said, I'd also like to correct Amazon on something - they said this is Newman's third outing with Mendes, the other two being "Shawshank Redemption" and "American Beauty."
Shawshank was directed by Frank Darabont, NOT Sam Mendes.
Mendes' other pairing with Newman was actually on 2002's "Road to Perdition," which is another great soundtrack I'd heartily recommend purchasing.
Missing Theme Song - but otherwise not bad.......2006-03-01
Fine score, but a consumer warning for the CD.......2006-01-20
...while one doesn't buy a CD of this nature primarily for the extra songs, one does expect the extras to be competently presented when they appear. So I was taken aback to hear Public Enemy's "Fight the Power" at a faster tempo and higher pitch than usual, as though mastered from a sped-up tape. I can't think of any intentional reason for this, so I'm assuming it was a mistake, but either way I found it not only annoying in itself but because of "Fight the Power"'s thematic significance, with its reference to the Bobby McFerrin tune heard earlier in the movie. ("'Don't Worry Be Happy' was a number one jam/Damn if I say it you can slap me right here".)
So then, while I like the Thomas Newman score a lot, I'm docking the CD a star for the sped-up "Fight the Power". Caveat emptor.
Thomas Newman is a Genius!.......2006-01-07
Almost perfect for the film, loses points as a cd.......2005-12-23
Ultimately, this describes Jarhead perfectly. I have seen the movie and music is seamless and perfect for it. For the most part, there is a sonic texture created, with guitars and drums to represent the bravado of the characters. If you are a fan of Newman's stirring orchestral works this is definitely not something you would like. Newer fans of "American Beauty" and the like will find things to enjoy here, but not in as vibrant or pleasing a way as in that album. The score on it's own is just not as exciting or involving as it could be. It is interesting in it's own right, but not very pleasing to hear. However, there are many good tracks interspersed throughout the score to take you to the good spot.
Overall, Jarhead warrants a 4.5/5 for the film, but on a cd, it's score drops to 3/5. It is pleasant at times, and mostly an interesting CD, but there are too many Newman masterpieces to consider this one high on your buying list. Then agan, if you are a Newman fan, this CD should satisfy you're urge to see what the guy is up to. Final score? Three out of five.
