Product Description
Based in Ireland, the Revs (for the uninitiated) are a three-piece alt rock band who call to mind everyone from Blondie to The Ramones. This 12-track lp is a winner, in many ways. For instance, it contains the much-lauded single "Death of a DJ", loved by reviewers all around the globe. This song is worthy of its praise: all plaintive vocals, thumpin' toms and angsty lyrics ("disco is over-the dj's been murdered)...etc.. The Revs have captured the hearts of the Irish punters and press alike, so far. They've produced and mixed this effort themselves (no mean feat). They've been touted as the hottest Irish exports of the moment. The sound is concise, high-energy pop/rock arrangements. The album is all energetic pacing, alternative melodies and rock beats. Comprising: guitar and vocals, John McIntyre, Bass and vocals, Rory Gallagher and drums by Micky D. O'Donnell, the Revs have mastered melodic, pop-rock...heavy on the off-kilter beats and vocal harmony. If you have to listen to pop in today's atmosphere, let it be The Revs and their style of anti-establishment, beautiful rebellion. Punk at times, this album delivers upbeat drums and dueling pop/punk guitars in spades. Enjoy the pop "woos!" of "Student Daze"... the darker thrust of "Trust" and its Travis/Radiohead feel... the aforementioned infectious "Death of a DJ"... and the ebbing and flowing of the thoughtful ballad "Eire Calling". I really enjoyed the mellow "Welcome to Heaven" too. It's easy to see why this band is shifting units so rapidly. The music is easy to listen to... Not dull..... and just for the record, Bono (U2) has given his stamp of approval. What more could you want?? Smash. 2005.

NOFX really do suck live. On CD, at least. Like most "live" albums, this one does not bring out the band's good side. They sound terrible and the cheering and screaming takes away from the music. If you're interested in hearing them live - go see a live show instead!

5 out of 5 stars a great live cd!.......2004-04-23

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Classic hardcore punk.......2007-03-05

Alternative Tentacles has through the years received a lot of criticism from punk "purists" for releasing lots of experimental stuff that deviates from the tried and true punk formula, and for no longer really being a "punk label" like in their early '80s heyday.

Well, on the contrary, I think they have actually been the ones to release some of the best punk in recent years, only in the form of reissues, of long out-of-print material that would otherwise be nearly impossible to come by (save for potentially paying horror prices for the vinyl originals). Three releases that come to mind are their Articles Of Faith and B.G.K. collections, along with their reissue of the classic "Not So Quiet On The Western Front" compilation in 1999.

Continuing this trend is "We Know You Suck," which compiles most of the 1981-83 recorded output from the pride of the old Phoenix, Arizona, punk underground, J.F.A.

I want to say right off the bat that you do not have to be a skateboard enthusiast to appreciate the sound of J.F.A.; this is purely and simply excellent fast hardcore, from a time when the sound was still fresh, new, and exciting.

Part of that might be attributed to the band's youthful exuberance. The liner notes infer that singer Brian Brannon was a mere 14 in 1981 during the recording of the band's "Blatant Localism" EP, which is included on this disc along with their 1983 "Valley Of The Yakes" LP. Truth be told, some of the best hardcore bands of the era were made up of kids, and J.F.A. drive this point home, as you won't find many bands from this time period better than them.

And defying the criticism often weighed against old punk in general is the fact that these guys were in many ways actually musically accomplished. Look no further than the instrumentals included here, "Walk Don't Run" and "Baja," for proof. (There is even a cute version of the Charlie Brown theme, gone punk, for your listening enjoyment.) Michael Cornelius' bass rings out loud and clear and is always present; or for further proof, listen to what might be my favorite track on here, "I Don't Like You," where Don Redondo's guitar has a glorious, timeless period sound that is like a time capsule to 1983. And Brian Brannon's vocals are appropriately snotty and sound like they're literally fueled by a steady teenage diet of "Cokes & Snickers" (the last track on the "Blatant Localism" EP).

The band were masters of short, fast bursts of melodic hardcore punk energy, shown in songs like "Skateboard" and "We Know You Suck." And the live tracks do not detract from the overall collection; as one reviewer pointed out, some of them are even faster and just as good as the studio versions.

The layout of the CD is cool as well; it is plastered with old flyers from the band's gigging days and is interspersed with photos of each of the band members trying their hand on their decks at the local skate park.

All in all, if you love vintage hardcore punk, you will love this CD and J.F.A. Well worth the price.

5 out of 5 stars Album to live by.......2005-02-28

This album is more or less the embodiment of the youthful anger and rebellion of the time it came out. This is more than just music, it's a feeling. Jody Foster's Army really knows how to deliver a sound that sticks with you even when the album ends. You can dance or skate or just chill to it. This is one of my all-time favorite albums.

In response to the writer who said the live tracks shouldn't be on here because of the quality...you shouldn't be listening to punk, especially not early hardcore. Most good punk music has bad recording quality, it's part of the art form. Not to mention some of the live tracks on this disc are better, in my opinion, than the studio ones.

4 out of 5 stars JODY FOSTERS ARMY ON CD !!!.......2003-11-07

Well it's about time record companies are realizing that they can "cash in" on re-issues of classic punk rock, especially in a CD format. Great value with loads of songs. My only problem is I wish they could have gotten rid of the live songs because I can't picture anyone rocking out to the poor quality sound. Why bother? Why bother with any live recordings? Regardless, the CD is missing a few gems but I'm sure it's not included due to legality issues with the record labels. For example, you will not find anything from the MADISON SQUARE GARDEN EP. Either way, this CD brings back the youth in me and wish todays punk rock had the same energy it had back then. Don't forget your helmet when you grind your board!

5 out of 5 stars best skate punk album of all time.......2003-09-27

jesus christ JFA knows what they're doing. They have it all in this cd, good instrumental, catchy tunes, and sick signing. If you want music to thrash to and skate to, this is a good album to get. They also do some awesome surf covers, WALK DONT RUN and BAJA, and those are suuuuuuuuuuuuper good. SIIIIICK CD!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Do yourself a favor!.......2003-03-25

This is amazing! JFA have been one of my favorite bands since I saw them in 86. They are one of the first skate punk bands ever! You just can't call yourself oldschool if you don't have JFA in your collection. If your newschool, throw out that hip hop stuff and check out the real deal! By the way Factory 13 still makes JFA decks! And I'm not talkin about those popsicle shaped boards with no soul either.

5 out of 5 stars Great!.......2007-06-21

Well, I suppose I could join the debate over I Am Hollywood and this cd, but let me just say that they are both great cds in their own right. I Am Hollywood was amazing! It had great vocals, awesome music, and amazing lyrics. Suck Out the Poison stays with this trend but in a different way. The southern rock elements have transformed this band into something completely new. The vocals are different in many ways, but still retain the He Is Legend feeling. I saw these guys live in Nashville promoting Suck Out the Poison and believe me, they are just a heavy as ever. They even played I Am Hollywood for all you who are obsessed. Overall, this cd is put together very well. The music, the vocals, the lyrics, everything flows and fits. I would recommend it to anyone. Christ bless you all!

2 out of 5 stars Highly Disappointed.......2007-05-13

First and second album rocked by socks off man. I really had high hopes for this cd. I agree with one of the previous comments where they mentioned they thought the band recruited a new singer. I don't know, maybe his voice was hoarse during the recording of this album. The only reason I gave this album a second star is because it's He Is Legend, come on. At least I still have I Am Hollywood!

4 out of 5 stars good cd..........2007-05-10

Not quite as great as I Am Hollywood but still a good release from He Is Legend...

5 out of 5 stars LISTEN.......2007-04-18

First off for all of you who have been talking about how I Am Hollywood was harder, that album is more than just the first and last songs okay?? i know you probably played those over and over and over and got the feeling that the seduction and I Am Hollywood was all that the album was, well it wasn't if you go back and look you'll see that it is chocked full of poppy slowed down stuff, THIS ALBUM IS HARDER THAN I AM HOLLYWOOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! His vocals are bigger and gruffer more often he sings less, there are more breakdowns, the jam is bigger, He Is Legend Resembles Zeppelin on this freaking album. BTW the references to the other album are lyrical threads you see them in most freaking incredible bands and they go all the way back to H.I.L.'s first EP

2 out of 5 stars Not as good...........2007-04-09

I purchased this CD expecting something great-- I had heard good things about this group, and had seen them live a couple times. I really liked them, until I got this CD. Definitely not as good as i thought it would be. The vocals were crappy, and there wasnt as much depth to the voice. The music wasnt as heavy or as tight as it was before.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Primus Album.......2006-07-16

Energy. What a great vibe. The audience on this live album is having a time of their lives. The chemistry is just as good as it gets on this record. One reviewer called this a "challenging" listen. To find it "challenging" would mean to ignore the feeling - to ignore the feeling is to cease living. This album is so charged they'll just come and get you, you don't have to do a thing.

3 out of 5 stars A curio for the fans of this bass heavy band.......2006-03-16

Primus seems to split so many opinions.

My own is that this is a weird recording by a bunch of guys who are seriously into what they are doing. How many other bands could put out stuff like John the Fisherman and Groundhog Day. This is great stuff in terms of being challenging listening, it certainly won't ever make an appearance on an easy listening station!

Bass heavy as you would expect - though the drums are also prominent and the production is fine, no problems with the fact that this is a live offering. All Primus fans should buy this, the reason I give it only three stars is that it is hard for the newcomer to get into. Perhaps one of the studio albums would be a better intro to this interesting band. Otherwise you may feel like you've wandered into a party where everyone is talking a different language to you!

Certainly different.

3 out of 5 stars only primus album I like, I openly admit i'm NOT a primus fan.......2005-09-29

I'm not a primus fan obviously, or at least a "true" fan by any means. But, I do have a liking for this album. John the Fisherman is my favorite Song on this, and I only like the live version of it on this album. Didn't like it on the other album, frizzle fry I think it was, could be wrong. Vocals are so funny, the minute I turn on the album, I can't but laugh at claypool's vocals. They CAN'T be taken seriously, this band has a big joking manner. But a serious note about the band is the bass playing of Claypool which most people know him by. I give the other members credit too of course, they play good music. Overall, 3 stars for me. Not a primus fanatic.

5 out of 5 stars Sucking the life out of you........2004-12-13

I could give a f*ck about faith no more...I could give a f*ck about the red hott chille pu*sies but i do give a f*ck about primus because i've always supported these psychos. Let's just say if you like heavy bass and music that sounds like it was made from people that left an asylum place ? Then be my quest and buy primus's "Suck on this" or any other album from primus specialy their early ones. Nutcase music best discribes their music. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Good Sucking.......2004-11-06

Primus my not be everyone's slice of pie, but they sure do know how to put on a good live show. Suck On This has Primus about as fired up as you will find them.

Primus cuts to the chase by opening up John The Fisherman with Rush's YYZ opener. The simple fact that Primus would choose to open up with an intro made by one of the greatest bands to ever walk the earth is just a simple statement of how confident and good Primus is. John The Fisherman is fired up, as Claypool finds his groove, and he digs into his bass.

The live album then moves onto Groundhog's Day, which makes references to toothpaste cereal and porno movies, and claypool continues to tear it up on his bass with his super groovy groves. I'd also like to note the amazing guitar and drumwork on this song (and the rest of the album), because the guitar and drum work always tends to get overshadowed by Claypool's bass playing. The basswork on Groundhog's Day is close to, if not on par with Victor Wooten. Yeah, I busted out the V-man's name. And yeah, Claypool can compete.

The Heckler, track 3, has the dirty guitar, the crazy vocals, and the super crazy bassline. The Heckler is definitely Primus, and it's definitely another awesome song on a CD full of awesome music. The Heckler has an amazing moving Bassline, and the guitar work is very impressive as well.

Track 4. The Pressman, is one of my favorite Primus songs. The song opens up with the quiet but steady bassline. The song slowly picks up and climaxes as Claypool gradually gets louder. The guitar and drum work, as well as the bass work (of course) is outstanding. The Pressman sort of has some Tool-sounding-esque, which proves that Primus has in fact influenced many bands.

Jellkit, track 5, is a low point on the CD. For me anyways. It's a fast moving aggressive song with Claypool molesting his bass and the drums going nuts in the background. The Basslines is hard to play, but it lacks many of the cool improve things that Claypool puts at the end of each phrase.

Track 6...well...everyone who calls themselves a Primus fan should know about Tommy The Cat. Tommy The Cat happens to be one of the best songs ever made, and it sounds absolutely amazing live. The lyrics are slowed down, and basically the rest of the song is too. The beginning of the song has the emphasis on the drum, then the bass kicks in, and Claypool starts playing some crazy [...] that would scare most musicians. The song then proceeds, and eventually there's a little Bass and Drum ditty, which totally rocks. Tommy The Cat live is slowed down a bit, but it is just as exhilarating as if it where studio.

Pudding Time is another Primus high moment, as Claypool continues to unleash primal Bass fury. The guitar work is HIGHLY notable on this song, as it is doing some pretty crazy stuff. Claypool's quick slapping sounds amazing too.

Harold Of The Rocks is another one of the higher points on the CD, as Claypool gets in a crazy funk, and he does his voice-like singing.

The CD appropriately closes with Frizzle Fry, a perfect ending for such a perfect live album.

Primus has intensity, energy, and skill. Three components that can make any band good live. This is a must own CD for any Primus fan, or fan of good live music in general. I highly recommend this CD.

When one sets out to pay tribute to pornography, the task is a weird one. Is the Bacchanalian concept being heralded? The sex trade? The porn film tradition? Phone sex? When Howie B makes his nod to the porn industry, he merely rolls it all together, matching different sex vibes to different spots and different artists on this two-CD set. A persisting--really an undulating--moan is peppered throughout the set, giving it an uncertain erotic ambiance. But the compilation's eroticism is joined to the proverbial hip with porn's other constancy: voyeurism. Everything on the disc seems shrouded in beats and electronic atmospherics, with faint suggestions of sex emanating here and there. And because so much of the set is about suggestion and voyeurism, it's a fairly effective mood-setting ensemble. Ending this homage to porn is its most explicitly pornographic episode--and also the only tune to break the boundaries of musicality--the simple if tell-all dialogue of "Jenny Cum Lately" by Naked Funk. The song earns its chops by being something other than a song, a display of phone-sex verbal games that spare no details. It leaves the musical world behind, perhaps in astonishment of the blissful babble that takes the place of imagined-sex adventures. --Andrew Bartlett

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Hmm.......2005-11-18

Well, as for the album, it was really good. Definately erotic...very sexy. What drew me to the album was Fantastic Plastic Machine's track... till this day, I wonder if the title came about from the graffiti on the wall in Alex DeLarge's municipal flatblock, 18A, Linear North housing complex in "A Clockwork Orange"..... very interesting.

5 out of 5 stars Best "Not What You Think" CD Ever.......2004-05-19

I just recently bought this CD along with some other more popular similar CD's, and this CD by far is the best out of all of them. This CD has an excellent collection of "acid jazz" type music you'll ever hear. The title throws you off a little, but the [crap] on the CD is only about 25% of the whole CD. The other 75% is such outstanding music, it makes you want to pass it on to your friends.

5 out of 5 stars not what you think.......2004-02-09

This is not the soundtrack to "Debby Does Dallas" but rather a cool, mostly downtempo, and certainly unique (as well as sometimes damn funny) collection of vibes.

5 out of 5 stars smooth and sexy with a few giggles.......2003-11-10

i've loved this cd since i heard it about a year ago, the techno is great and the lounge aspect is quite sensual. the oooh's and ahhh's dont bother me, they're important to the aura of the cd as a whole and actually somewhat titilating in most cases. the humour is quite well done and not over the top as it might have been.

i think its a very well put together soundtrack, but one i wouldnt play for my parents, definitely though, for my friends.

5 out of 5 stars sucked it and i SAW.......2001-03-17

After reading the mixed online reviews here, i took the risk and decided to 'suck it and see'... EXCELLENT.. just what i like. i had expected alot of ooohhhs and aaahhhhss, and there are, but not overwhelming. The beats are sultry, sexy and soothing, some have a bit of pump in it. It's cheeky, different, and only sometimes in your face. It's not something i'd play in front of my parents, something definitely i'd use to get in the mood, and some tracks just for pure shock value at peak hour traffic.

4 out of 5 stars Candyland.... what a treat.......2003-03-07

It's sad that Candyland fell apart almost as soon as success hit them. A friend of mine bought "Suck it & See" and played it constantly when I was around until it melted into my brain.
I've been listening to it on and off since it came out in 1991 and I still find it to be an inspired, lyrical and well-produced treat.

Amazon.com

For his third collaboration with director Sam Mendes (after American Beauty and The Shawshank Redemption), composer Thomas Newman has come up with one of his finest scores. The music mixes modern atmospheric quasi-rock touches with Middle Eastern influences (with particularly great success on the tracks "Welcome to the Suck" and "Zoomies."). The latter manifest themselves in both the beats and the instrumentation--the credits include soloists on exotic instruments such as the bowed cumbus (a type of banjo-like lute) and the processed xaphoons (a sax made of bamboo). All the more jarring, then, when the CD's handful of songs pop up. (It's quite a jolt to hear Bobby McFerrin's "Don't Worry Be Happy" after four eerie instrumental tracks.) The other song picks are obvious but well chosen: T-Rex's "Bang a Gong (Get It On)," "Naughty by Nature's "O.P.P.," Public Enemy's "Fight the Power," and Tom Waits's "Soldier's Things." Still, it's Newman's work that propels this CD, not the pick-up songs. Surprisingly, Wagner's "Ride of the Valkyries," which figures in one of the movie's most memorable scenes (when soldiers watch Apocalypse Now), isn't included here. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

5 out of 5 stars You fools!.......2006-10-27

I am reading all the negative reviews of this soundtrack, and most of them mention the absence of Kanye West's "Jesus Walks." One reviewer gives the album one star because he was "misled" into buying the album.

Um, hello? This is an instrumental score for the film! NOT a Various Artists soundtrack! This is, you may have noticed, an album that falls under the name of Thomas Newman! If anyone bought this expecting other music, then it's entirely their own fault. It even says on the front: "MUSIC BY THOMAS NEWMAN."

That said, I'd also like to correct Amazon on something - they said this is Newman's third outing with Mendes, the other two being "Shawshank Redemption" and "American Beauty."

Shawshank was directed by Frank Darabont, NOT Sam Mendes.

Mendes' other pairing with Newman was actually on 2002's "Road to Perdition," which is another great soundtrack I'd heartily recommend purchasing.

3 out of 5 stars Missing Theme Song - but otherwise not bad.......2006-03-01

If you've watched the previews for this film, you're likely expecting a song called Jesus Walks by Kanye West to be on the soundtrack but it's not there - very annoying. But otherwise it's a pretty good CD of music to listen to while you work out or drive fast.

3 out of 5 stars Fine score, but a consumer warning for the CD.......2006-01-20

Thomas Newman's original music for JARHEAD is not only typically daring with many unconventional sounds (utilizing samples, electronic treatments and exotic percussion), but one of his most stirring, rock-influenced efforts as well (as with the opening track, "Welcome to the Suck"). At first I thought there were no melodies as memorable as "Dead Already" from AMERICAN BEAUTY or "Road to Chicago" from ROAD TO PERDITION, but the 3/4-time march used in both "Raining Oil" and "Desert Storm" has grown on me. Of course the CD is recommendable for Newman's score alone. But...

...while one doesn't buy a CD of this nature primarily for the extra songs, one does expect the extras to be competently presented when they appear. So I was taken aback to hear Public Enemy's "Fight the Power" at a faster tempo and higher pitch than usual, as though mastered from a sped-up tape. I can't think of any intentional reason for this, so I'm assuming it was a mistake, but either way I found it not only annoying in itself but because of "Fight the Power"'s thematic significance, with its reference to the Bobby McFerrin tune heard earlier in the movie. ("'Don't Worry Be Happy' was a number one jam/Damn if I say it you can slap me right here".)

So then, while I like the Thomas Newman score a lot, I'm docking the CD a star for the sped-up "Fight the Power". Caveat emptor.

5 out of 5 stars Thomas Newman is a Genius!.......2006-01-07

Thomas Newman is brilliant as always and delivers beautifully. Having read the book prior to the motion picture, Thomas Newman truly brings Swofford's tale to life. If you enjoyed The Horse Whisperer or the Shawshank Redemption score, then you'll thoroughly enjoy Jarhead.

3 out of 5 stars Almost perfect for the film, loses points as a cd.......2005-12-23

Make no mistake - Jarhead proves Thomas Newman's abillity to write music for film. He is not making the music in order to show off his amazing talents, he is making the music so it is perfect for the film. Whereas some composers might score depressing scenes with grand sweeping movements trying to make themselves look like complex composers, Newman knows what will enhance the scene and what won't, and what can convey the message required.

Ultimately, this describes Jarhead perfectly. I have seen the movie and music is seamless and perfect for it. For the most part, there is a sonic texture created, with guitars and drums to represent the bravado of the characters. If you are a fan of Newman's stirring orchestral works this is definitely not something you would like. Newer fans of "American Beauty" and the like will find things to enjoy here, but not in as vibrant or pleasing a way as in that album. The score on it's own is just not as exciting or involving as it could be. It is interesting in it's own right, but not very pleasing to hear. However, there are many good tracks interspersed throughout the score to take you to the good spot.

Overall, Jarhead warrants a 4.5/5 for the film, but on a cd, it's score drops to 3/5. It is pleasant at times, and mostly an interesting CD, but there are too many Newman masterpieces to consider this one high on your buying list. Then agan, if you are a Newman fan, this CD should satisfy you're urge to see what the guy is up to. Final score? Three out of five.
