THE Performance of this Symphony.......2007-05-20

The original recording was made in 1966. Of course it lacks the super-hi fidelity of todays DDD recordings, however, the performance of Marie Clair Alain and that of conductor Jean Martinon by far overshadows the shortcomings of fidelity. I have three other performances of this work and have heard actually dozens more and this disc tops them all. It was like hearing the great Symphony for the first time.

The Glory That Was France.......2006-04-03

This CD is especially appreciated as a reminder of the prominent position France once held in the musical and artistic world as well as the international arena. I mean, how much more French could you get - Camille Saint-Saens, Francis Poulenc and Marie-Claire Alain - three musical giants.

This is really a wonderful album, deeply felt, the Gallic flavor quite intense. It is NOT just an organ CD: "Le Rouet D'Omphale" and "Danse Macabre" are included as well as the two signature works - the Third Symphony by Saint-Saens and the Concerto for Organ in G Minor by Poulenc. In an ironic turn, the (in my opinion) inferior Saint-Saens has triumphed in the public mind over the far superior Poulenc. When one considers the treatment of the organ and orchestra, there is no contest. Also, the work by Poulenc had a striking originality - from the gargantuan theme to the "merry go round" finale (what a stroke of genius).

Although the Third Symphony pales slightly by comparison, Alain gives her 110% as she does on all her recordings. She has stated in the past that she has no national preference but undeniably she arises to the occasion when performing Widor, Vierne, Franck or any works by her own famous relatives. This CD is an easy five star. PLEASE - if you want to hear the organ in all its glory (it's the famous Saint Sulpice), purchase GREAT TOCCATAS with Ms. Alain - a stunning work of incredible virtuosity.

Outstanding in every way.......2005-05-07

Jean Martinon was a superior conductor, especially in his native French repertoire. This CD has excellent sound, great orchestral playing and highly musical interpretations. Everything sounds just right. If you buy this CD, program it to end with the symphony. It will give you 71 minutes of pure, musical pleasure.

"Blasted" away.......2006-09-27

I am by no standards an expert on music, let alone organ music. I just purchased this CD because I love the sound of the organ, and wanted an album from a mix of artists before I started branching out to single composers. I would also consider myself an audiophile, only listening to high quality music with my portable headphone amplifier and Sennheiser HD-555's. Let me tell you, the quality is perfect, and the music is incredible! Such a full sound, it's *almost* as good as sitting in audience, only lacking the full body experience of organ music. I would recommend this to anybody looking to get a foot into the world of organ music.

Wow!.......2006-06-07

I happen to love organ music, even that tacky Saint-Saens
Third Symphony (with which this CD ends and just the third movement).

I grew up with E. Power Biggs, Virgil Fox, et al. and had never heard of Michael Murray (okay, it's been a while). I bought this delightful CD when it first appeared and before Amazon had been invented.

Upon hearing that most famous work with which Murray begins, I confess I was just this side of hysterical -- I was laughing with pure happiness. Murray's take on is it wonderfully over-the-top in the best possible sense. I have a son-in-law who is a musician and, indeed, does play the organ (i.e., if any of them have had pipes, I don't know, but I'm here to tell you, I don't want to hear ANY but pipe organs -- okay, I'm old).

At any rate, to hear this Toccata and Fugue played with such (carefully studied) abandon so tickled me, I called Brian (the son-in-law) and demanded that he listen while I put it on my stereo.

Now I'm going to send it to my son Bruce upon learning last night that he LOVES organ music. Who knew? He's 54 years old, for goodness' sake and never mentioned that little item before.

For those who like BIG organ works.......2005-09-04

This CD concentrates on the big, showy organ pieces that organists love to play. As an organist myself, I find that such numbers are usually more fun to play than to hear. Fortunately, this CD is very listenable, and makes the case for both playing and listening to these works. I'd buy it again; maybe more telling, I'm looking for some of the music, so I can go play it!

Pure Majestic Power!.......2003-07-20

Corey is right - this is an outstanding organ CD, one of the best I've heard. Murray plays some of the largest and most powerful organs on Earth, and uses the reed stops more than the usual organist to produce great effects and a wall of sound that are majestic in the extreme. The selections are all great virtuoso showpieces, and track #6 by Messiaen (Dieu parmi nous from La Nativite') is especially demonstrative of the great contrasts available in a large organ. The horizontal trumpets in this piece are predominant and very bright, contrasting with the snarling bass of the pedal organ.

A word of caution - this CD requires a capable stereo (think subwoofer) to sound its best. Trust me - if you listen to this CD on a good stereo and if you like organ music, you'll sit there with a big grin on your face and tears in your eyes as you listen to this CD.

Excellent Performance by Murray.......2001-11-09

This is by far one of the best organ CD's I have ever listened to. The variety is very good overall. From the state trumpets at St. John's to the mighty organ of First Congregational Church, Murray provides nice registration on all of the organs sampled. The Finale from Saint-Saens No. 3 is awesome with the Philadelphia Orchestra under Eugene Ormandy,s direction. Murray provides his own notes on the organs and the pieces in the booklet that is included. This is some fine organ music!!

I love classical music but I dont own very much of it, so I thought I would start my collection with Masters of the Bow. What a beautiful selection it was. I just love the sound of a Violin, Joshua Bell is my favorite,I would love to hear more from him. This collection really helps you get to know the masters. Lovely Lovely!

Outstanding.......2004-08-17

I love the violin and this collection is one of my favorites. A great choice for someone like me who doesn't know enough about music and never knows what to buy. It has introduced me to some artists and pieces that I knew nothing about and will help me know what to look for in violin music in the future. This is my favorite but I would also recommend The Cello and Voice CDs in the "Masters of" series. I can't wait for more in this series.

Uneven quality but great value.......2007-04-30

Brilliant Classics has found a niche with their extremely low-price multi-disc collections of the work of a single composer or performer. The Bach, Mozart and Chopin Complete Editions are legitimately considered to be artistic and economical triumphs. But the Masterworks series are more uneven. Currently available from Amazon France at about a buck per CD, they're still a bargain for those interested in quickly building a music library. But it's worth keeping a few things in mind. Unlike the Bach and Mozart Editions, these are not always historically informed performances. In this Mendelssohn set, the Hanover Band puts in a cameo (in Calm Sea and Prosperous Voyage), but most of the ensembles use modern instruments, techniques and proportions. This doesn't always work out, as in the case of the ponderously heavy recordings of the String Symphonies by an apparently full complement of Gewandhausorchester Leipzig strings (Mendelssohn likely wrote these early works for a much smaller group). The caliber of the performances varies too, ranging from good to poor, and from marquis musicians such as Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau to a few Dutch who-dats. The chamber musicians generally acquit themselves well (though the Octet recording is marred by an engineering flaw in the last movement, distortion, at least on my copy). But the symphonies suffer from some substandard performances, such as the Italian Symphony's live recording with not only audience noise but also ensemble flaws such as a distracting clarinet squeak in the first movement's recapitulation. Another strike is the lack of program notes. Brilliant's Complete Editions provide a booklet or CD-ROM with program notes, but here you'll need to do your own research.

Despite these shortcomings, this set is still good value (at least at Amazon France's current price of 31 Euros). And it's a fine way to become acquainted with Mendelssohn's music.

A superb collection of Mendelssohn.......2007-03-24

Let me preface this by saying that most of these works were not new to me - I own many other Mendelssohn CDs and have enjoyed his compositions for some time now. Also, this set is available much cheaper elsewhere, particularly from European retailers.
The symphonies are well-performed. 'Reformation' is an inspired live recording. The 12 string symphonies, written in Mendelssohn's youth, are also included. The concertos are exceptional - the violin concerto is as good as you'll find anywhere. The oratorios Elijah and Paulus are included, as well as the complete chamber works and a diverse assortment of choral works. The last few discs include the Lied ohne worte, the epic organ sonatas, and excellent renditions of A Midsummer Night's Dream and Fingal's Cave. While there are a few sketchy performances in the choral and chamber works, the performances and recordings are generally very solid, and the body of work couldn't be better.

Superlative collection.......2006-10-11

A collection of 100 individual arias and ensembles from the EMI catalogue of complete works recorded between 1955 and 2003. It includes selections from operas by Italian, Austrian, German, Russian and French composers. The French composers are especially well represented unlike most such anthologies. And there are several more obscure contributions, such as an aria from Catalani's La Wally. A well-judged balance of musical periods and styles, and the very best singers of the last half of the last century. And remarkably, the whole collection of 6 CDS, over 7 hours of music, is being sold for the cost of only 1 CD !

Great value for the money.......2006-04-23

This is simply the best collection of opera arias that I have seen. It's not 100% in that there are a few well-known arias that are not here, but what is here is simply a treasure. The organization is a bit strange, but there's some logic. For example, Disk 6 is mostly from French operas. A seemingly endless amount of glorious music. Just fabulous. You won't be disappointed.

Great for the money and a good starter on opera...........2006-01-07

This cd is a splendid collection of songs, and the price is unbeatable; I have but a few minor complaints about the overall product. The cd would have been much more enjoyable if they had put the music in some sort of order, rather than jumping around from artist to artist sporatically. My only other complaint would be that they could have chosen some better vocalists to play some of the songs. For example, in CD 6, track 3: Romeo et Juliette, the singer was not nearly as strong and definative as she should have been and I've definately heard in various other versions that were way better than this. This disappointed me greatly. But even with these few small complaints, this collection is still great and the price is amazing. It includes MOST of the famous opera pieces, as well some great songs that are often overlooked such as the beautiful song from Wagner's Die Meistersinger von Nurnberg (CD 6, track 16) along with others.

Amazing Value.......2005-08-23

I am so impressed by this collection that I must share my joy at getting so many beautiful arias, duets, et al in one collection. It captures many of the great operatic voices in stellar performances spanning the last 50 years. If you are enchanted by beautiful operatic highlights, removed from their operatic storylines, this set is for you. Hours of gorgeous music for practically pennies!

My Son Always Liked this Movie.......2007-07-10

The score to RAINTREE COUNTY has finally been issued with Nat King Cole singing the main title. This CD sounds very good. My son always liked this movie. My best friend in Dallas told me that Montgomery Clift had been in our ROTC class for a short time but I really don't remember seeing him. The music is just fine and as a Civil War tale this movie is as good as they come. I always watched it when it was on TV.

All-time great & beautiful film score!!!.......2007-02-24

In the past 50 years, only a handful of film scores attained the status of being desired for both their rarity and the quality of the music.

One of those scores is John Green's magnum opus "Raintree County" (MGM-1957). MGM was hoping that "Raintree County" would stand beside "Gone With the Wind" in popularity and quality, but for various reasons it fell a bit short of that goal. Its story is by Ross Lockridge, a tortured man whose one contribution to American literature is this tale of a man who seeks an ideal -- a man of whom much is expected by many people. His hero, John Shawnessy, must endure heartache and loss, the Civil War and a commitment to what he feels is right before he can, through more tragedy, attain a peace of mind and get on with his life.

For whatever the studio's reason, it chose to hand the directorial responsibilities to Edward Dmytryk...a rather good director, if not a great one for this particular film. Montgomery Clift (a tragic figure whose auto accident during the filming left him disfigured and emotionally diminished the remainder of his life) was cast as John Shawnessy. Elizabeth Taylor was cast as Susannah, the ravishing beauty who captured Shawnessy's affections through seduction and deceit. Eva Marie Saint was cast as Nell, Johnny's true soulmate and love who was unable to save him from a bad marriage, but who stood by him and loved him through his tragedies.

All the MGM stops were pulled to make this a grand, authentic southern epic and it's a glorious thing to watch and wallow in, most of the way through.

Enhancing the film's qualities beyond all measure, and keeping it interesting when the interest might otherwise flag, is John Green's two-hour-plus score, featuring one of the screen's great themes and some of film's most dynamic and expressive music.

The film's original soundtrack had the distinction of being issued by RCA on two separate recordings: One was a two-LP gatefold in monaural sound of roughly an hour of the film's score. The other was a single highlights LP in "Stereo", the new sound technology of its time. As the film failed to capture public interest, neither did the soundtrack recordings. They disappeared from record stores and were cut out of RCA's catalog.

And yet....people did see the film. In small towns and cities, and in drive-ins. And some people did take notice of the music. And copies that could be found of the soundtrack were quickly snatched up wherever they could be found...and were treasured. Their value increased. And the film's reputation increased, as well, developing a niche fan base that could not ignore the ravishing beauty of Taylor and the fragile tragedy of Clift commingled in a tale of a doomed relationship.

In the 1970s, nostalgia for Hollywood movies and Hollywood icons became fashionable. Film soundtracks were being reissued. In 1976, for the first time, a soundtrack specialty company -- Entr'Acte Records -- issued a 2-LP soundtrack of "Raintree County" in full stereo. In the 1980s, home video exploded and "Raintree County" was one of many films suddenly available to the audiences who loved it and to newer audiences who fell in love with it. This was true of its music. When the CD revolution had taken over the music marketplace by the end of the 1980s, the stereo recording of "Raintree County" was issued on CD. A decade later, RCA's Spanish branch issued the original 2-LP recording on CD in monaural sound.

Now, in the 50th anniversary year of the film and its score, soundtrack specialty label Film Score Monthly and founder/producer Lukas Kendall have released the "ultimate" soundtrack recording of the complete score to this film, mastered from original studio elements, in full vibrant stereo, and the recording includes outtakes and alternate versions of cues. In addition, the original main title with song -- as sung by Nat King Cole over the opening credits -- is presented with the film score for the first time on a recording (courtesy of Capitol Records -- a major coup for Kendall and his impressive label, but then Kendall performs several miracles a year with his soundtrack releases).

Typical of FSM recordings is a generous, illustrated insert booklet with intelligent, informative notes by Ross Care, a composer and film music author who writes with authority and passion.

I cannot recommend it highly enough. It's tremendous film music -- explosive, passionate and lyrical. It's an engaging feast of Americana and 19th century romanticism mingling into a fantastic musical portrait of a dynamic story.

You will NOT be disappointed.

interesting and likeable.......2006-12-10

I had recently developed some interest in Saint-Saens, and was in the process of getting some stuff by him, when I came across this disk. I pretty much bought it on a whim--if I didn't like it, I wouldn't be out much.

I found the disk on a whole to be immediately enjoyable, with clear and well balanced chorale work, and the choirs balanced well with the organs. The organ work itself is very nicely done, with the exception of a few shanked notes in the Sanctus movement by Saint-Saens. With regards to the compositions themselves, i actually like the Gounod mass a little more that the S.S. It is (as the liner notes also state) a thematically unified piece, well thought out and logically constructed. The theme itself is very simple but memorable, and is actually beautifully developed instrumentally. The S.S. mass is much more thematically diverse, although completely French in sound, and definitely recongizeable as S.S. The Gloria is fanfarish in nature, while the Credo is given S.S.'s signature pseudo-medieval-modal harmony style. The Sanctus ends in a dance rhythmed soli/tutti dialogue.

Four stars for two works which are completely religious and functional in nature (which is a style i am quite fond of...) and are therefore rather meager in development and scope. These are simply not major or 'important' works, but, as already stated, are very enjoyable in their own rite (pun). I certainly don't feel that i am out anything on these, and in fact I do like them and listen to them from time to time. Technically, they are very well produced and leave very little to be desired from a sound engineering viewpoint. For those enjoy church music/chorale music, I can definitely recommend this.

If you are trying to decide between this and the Cantate release, this is the clear choice. The cantate version of the S.S. is rather dissapointing...

I'll give this record the full 5 because when I first heard it in the store, it brought tears to my eyes.
Sister Marie Keyrouz's voice is pure peace and faith. It is no less grandiose than one of J.S. Bach's cantatas. Ornate chants form winding, exulting paths up into the sky. She captures the essence of worship into sound in a way that might seem unusual to Westerners. I could feel my own spirit join in, and I'm not a practicing Christian.
As for the theme of the record, as you already know, it consists of Melchite liturgical chants dating from the fourth century A.D. Interestingly enough, all the texts are adressed to the Virgin Mary, even though they are destined to be performed at various celebrations. My personal favourite is #9, Inna-l Malak, the Office of Easter.
NOTE to musicians and theorists: the booklet includes the ancient modes(echos) in which the pieces are written. I also recommend this record for supporting research on Judeo-Christian musical traditions, as well as Gregorian Chant, which lists Byzantine religious music as one of its influences.

--The word, -the sound, -the meaning in the mind of the believer. -The voice of Marie Keyrouz is compelling. --It transports and elevates...though mostly of a subdued nature, there is occasionally a note that is sung quite loudly. ---Except for the first in greek--all the tracks are sung in arabic. --It's unfortunate that the arabic words are not printed in the liner notes as are the full translations in french, english, and german (only the first lines). ---alot of subtle changes in dynamics contibute to make a music that pulls the heart strings, harmonizes the emotions, and brings clarity to the mind.--It should be pointed out that some of this music is a little raw---sounding--- ...if not improvised, ---rather free and spontaeneously rendered.

Beautiful, Mysterious, Exotic.......2002-08-06

To western ears, such as mine, it comes as quite a shock to hear Christian service music that sounds so Arabic. Sister Marie Keyrouz sings chants from the Melchite Church in Arabic and Greek in a rich contralto, sparely accompanied by a generally droning male chorus. The melodies are fluid, modal and rhapsodic. The effect is totally entrancing. Although the price is a bargain, the performance and recording quality are pure gold, and you'd be silly to pass this up.
