Product Description
Full title - Mind If We Make Love To You? UK reissue of 2002 album includes two exclusive bonus tracks, 'Out Of Mind' (Alternate Version) & 'Ride' (Instrumental Version), & a completely revamped sleeve. Rev-Ola. 2004.
Here are some song highlights:
The songs "Ride" and "Sp Nice" have the strongest Beach Boys influence of any of the songs (the latter is reminiscent of "California Girls"). In fact, Brian Wilson sings back-up on both songs.
"Time has You" is reminiscent of Jimmy Webb's, "Wichita Lineman" melded with the song "Make It With You" by Bread.
"Another Way" has a strong Rod Argent trademark on it. It is more similar to the Argent song, "Pleasure" (from their 1971 Ring Of Hands album) than from any song from the Zombies classic Odessey And Oracle album (I am an avid Zombies fan!).
"Out Of Mind" is also very Jim Webb influenced. It recalls the lilting feel of his early songs like "Up, Up And Away" and "Carpet Man" (both recorded by The Fifth Dimension).
"Sweeetness" has a mid-sixties bossa nove feel while "Something I Know" hearkens back to Billy Joel's "Piano Man," albeit more jazzy, crossed with The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band's version of "Mr. Bojangles."
This album is quickly becoming one of my favorite "desert island" albums (along with albums by The Pearlfishers and Swing Out Sister)! If you like very nostalgic retro-pop with lots of indelible melodic hooks, then this C.D. is for YOU!
then i bought it....
nothing could prepare me for the maturation that took place from the band i first heard. they have absorbed the full on joy of touring with brian wilson, and it rubbed off on their songwriting.
even if you never heard any of their material before, the fully realised vision they created is overwhelming to say the least!
the production is as good as an album can get, and their chord changes are to die for to say the least, but don't die, because you won't be able to hear it again, i am at about one every other day listening to it, to try to keep it somewhat fresh.
the production is sooooo dreamy, it makes me happy to hear ANYONE making pop music with effects/atmosphere, everyone seems to be stuck on the "less is more" aesthetic, which i think we can all say has been done to death, twice.
i love them for creating a beautiful, positive, entrancing album in an age where true songwriting is "p.r. work, sexy looks, hot videos, and bling bling" even the pop/rock acts of the day have no bearing in ANY time period, some are trying to be new wave revivalists, but they have aped the wrong angle of the sound that was and is loved/cherished, and the garage rock/pop thing is done so poorly, that any hack can sneak out an o.k. song, then make a career off of lackluster songwriting.
ladies and gentlemen, we are in the dark age of music, so hold on to the good bands you know, and hold tight.
albums to own:
sneetches: sometimes that's all we have, slow
hollow men: cresta
nick lowe: jesus of cool, labour of lust
the new pornographers: mass romantic, electric version
THE ZOMBIES: ODYSSEY AND ORACLE, SINGLES A'S AND B'S(MUST OWN THIS)
there are more, but that is a great place to start for good headphone music.
I purchased the CD on iTunes yesterday and have been playing it non-stop ever since with increased appreciation every time through. The thing is, I usually tire quickly of music, even music I LOVE. But that's not the case here.... These tunes are all so listenable, so melodic, so surprizingly creative, that I find myself yearning to hear more. Really, like a breath of fresh of air is the ambiance of this music. I just love having this vibe filling my space.
How did I get here? Well, maybe not surprizing, I'm a huge fan of Brian Wilson. I love his music and him as a person. He has a very special gift among all songwriters. Well, it turned out I saw the Wondermints backing him in concert when he wheeled through here in 2001. I remember thier introduciton onstage, but it has not been until now that I've heard them separately as a band, and, what a band!
These guys are amazingly creative artists. Wonderful songwriting. Yes, the strong influence of Brian's music is indelibly stamped on everything the Wondermints do... its that quirkly good feeling harmonic brilliance, but more than that. The music make you FEEL GOOD in your soul. I hear Beatles influence too. But its really very original stuff, and unique unto itself. This album has joined the ranks of my most treasured recordings, and has been a wonderful 'introduction' (for me) of what has quickly become my favorite band.
If you don't own this record, don't hestitate in getting it... I cannot imagine anyone not liking it, except for those that are tone deaf and so full of angst that they cannot bear to listen to anything pretty and soul stirring.
This band needs the support of music lovers everywhere. There's so much trash out there passing for music, its a shame these guys aren't hugely known. They sure deserve to be.
