Decent - Some songs superior and strong, others forgettable.......2007-07-18
Perhaps I'm being too critical, and that song to me is a 15 on a 10 scale and should not hold a bias for me when judging the rest of the songs on this album. The problem is that some of the songs don't have much of a connection with me, instrumentally or lyrically. At times I enjoy the edgy guitar riffs but for the most part I felt like a lot of these songs just float by instead of reaching out and grabbing me like "Saturdays" did. The song "Well enough Alone" is memorable as its razor sharp opening leads into some emotional singing, and again I am excited in hoping there are more on the album like it.
Then I started giving it time to grow on me, and it did. The song "Humanoid" has some great changeups with regards to varying riffs and also a song that seemed to stick with me at its very first listen. The song "Paint the Seconds" is stoic at times and although the riffs on this particular song seem to be too familiar in connection with other songs on the album, the chorus has a great crescendo to it that makes it different enough to add to the overall driving power it has. The song "I get it" is also very likable and puts the songwriting and vocals a bit more in the forefront, including an infectious beat found throughout.
Chevelle has managed to stay visible on the front lines of new rock bands that have emerged in this decade among the remnants of a "rock" industry that is always trying to find a new identity, but all too often having its poster child fall off a cliff as the assembly line pushes forward, not heeding that the bridge is out ahead. There is still enough talent within these guys to blaze new trails and I look forward to their next release, while continuing to enjoy albums in their past discography.
Nothing short of awesome!.......2007-07-16
As anyone should have expected the new Chevelle cd is perfect. Yeah, they lost a member (brother). But the member (brother-in-law) is such a perfect fit that I doubt anybody even notices. As long as Chevelle keeps pumping out the great cd's that they have been, I foresee another great band. Go ahead & purchase this cd, you will not be let down.
"Take a ride in the new Chevelle!" (possibly the dumbest review title possible).......2007-07-13
Confident yet not lazy in their niche in today's rock scene, Chevelle has a satisfying 3rd major label LP with Vena Sera. You think Pete Loeffler has run out of fingers to point? You think wrong. He, brother Sam, and brother-in-law Dean have yet to run out of ways to manipulate their signature booming, detuned sound to condemn the masses and sell rock records that stand head and shoulders above their contemporaries in their intensity and quality songwriting.
Unlike parts of TTOT, this record proves easily listenable from beginning to end. The middle offers the most intense and creative songs. "Straight Jacket Fashion" manages to switch with fluidity between a punk beat and their oft-reliable and smooth ¾ groove, the place the song comes in for its landing. "The Fad" and "Humanoid" are the darkest cuts on the album, the latter employing an old-school rhythm and turning it into a blistering hook reminiscent of a quicker "Family System". Second single "I Get It" deserves a mention as well for its prominent acoustic guitar (believe it or not) in the verses and its seething, sarcastic tone throughout.
Don't think you're going to gain any new insights into the meaning of the songs nor who the arrows are aimed at - just like the past records, Pete's lyrics are inscrutable. Even so, you have to admit that he manages to create some of the catchiest choruses in radio rock, even if you have little idea who he's pissed at. It's actually rather nice, especially in Chevelle's genre, to have some mystery in the meanings of the songs. (And isn't that the point of art anyway, to interpret it for yourself?)
Critics have always come down on Chevelle either for Tool/Helmet imitation or just for lack of deviation from the nu-metal masses. While Vena Sera is not likely to silence the critics, those who do "get it" should be very pleased...Chevelle at least is not trying to break into the Top 40 like other rock bands going through identity crises.

Wonderful, but not my first choice.......2007-04-07
Fischer-Dieskau roughens up his voice for the role, and therein lies a problem. The voice spreads and his diction suffers because of it; that and his unidiomatic pronounciation, with far too many rolled "r"s. He does the drama well, but what works well in lieder works here less well on the large scale. Odd, given his success as on opera singer (check out his Iago), that here he frequently comes off blustery.
Dame Gwyneth Jones belies her reputation and gives a contolled, dramatic performance, using her "edge" to advantage in "Hear Ye, Israel". Gedda's diction is amazing, with exactly the right color for this literature, and projecting a little more blood than an English tenor.
Dame Janet Baker is my star in this performance. Dramatic, heart-rending when need be, and in wonderful voice. She'll chill your blood when she tells the people of Baal to "slaughter him, do what he hath done!".
And as for the people of Baal, the Philharmonia Chorus is wonderful. Incisive and dramatic, with beautiful tone. I could do without the trick of the boy choir for "Lift Thine Eyes", and I miss the small ensembles, but all in all a fine performance, and good recording, circa 1968.
First choice in English, Daniels/Terfel: better Elijah in Terfel, better recording, more authentic orchestra, small vocal ensembles (as per the score) but inferior women (including Fleming: beautiful tone, but where's her head?). In German, it's Sawallisch/Adam all the way.
But if you're singing Elijah, and have a score, this is a good choice.
THE BEST recording of the BEST oratorio ever..........2006-08-15
This recording is in every way wonderful. Starting with Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau. He IS Elijah to me. His singing is perfection. He has amazing phrasing and his diction makes it possible to understand the lovely, inspired libretto to this heavenly music. There are so many pieces that are ephemeral, but a couple of my favorites are: #14, Lord God of Abraham and #37, For the Mountains shall Depart. Dieskau does a great job of what I think of as compassionate, heartfelt singing. His interpretation sounds like the voice of God himself. It has a quality of kindness and yet he sounds just as convincing reprimanding the people of Baal. He is the true highlight of this recording.
That said, the rest of the cast is wonderful as well. Gwyneth Jones has a lovely, silvery voice that has a clarion bell-like tone that rings over the large orchestra with ease. She has occasional "misfire" but is a consistent performer. Dame Janet Baker and Nicolai Gedda both perform at a consistently lovely level. The orchestra and chorus are both wonderful. #15, Cast thy Burden upon the Lord, #32 He that Shall Endure to the End, and #38 Then Did Elijah are all highlights.
All said, for me the main reason to get this recording is Dieskau's Elijah- after all, he's the main character. But don't forget the lovely music. This story is exciting and passionate and sacred all at the same time. For me, it's the best oratorio that has a moving story and great music too.
Too bad there are so few recordings of Elijah.......2006-07-03

How refreshing to listen to an album all the way through without getting bored. It's a winner. If you like your blues with a little downhome twist, you'll love this album. Missed my one opportunity to see him here in Nashville this year, and boy do I regret it.

Have a little faith in Delbert..........2002-12-24
I'd rate this CD very highly just for the great version of "Have a little faith in me," but the entire disc is just plain supurb.
Just the right mix of Blues, Rock and Country provides a disc that is worth every penny of the asking price.
"Everytime I roll the dice" is a rollicking blues tune, and starts this disc out right. "I used to worry" is a great tune, and just confirms that Delbert isn't worried 'about things like that.' "Miss you fever" is the typical 'sad you are gone (and I probably chased you away)' song, but from there you've got "Why Me" to pick up your spirits and start you rocking.
My personal favorite is "Have a little faith in me," a song that I think of when I hear "If I should fall behind" (performed very well by Springsteen and the E Street-ers and by the exquisite Faith Hill).
"Never been rocked enough" follows that and continues this great disc toward several more great tunes.
Well worth the asking price, and an excellent addition to any CD collection.

I don't think you'll find Rubber Rodeo's "Anywhere with you" anywhere else - this is an amazing, under-rated song. Two other great rarities are Never Never by the Assembly and Every Word Means No by Let's Active.
Other don't-miss songs are Tenderness, One Night in Bangkok (Chess is touring around in summer 2007 - can you believe it?), Voices Carry, and Can't Get Enough of You Baby.

Despite the tepid production by metal guru Sandy Pearlman, the Clash's sophomore album, Give 'Em Enough Rope, manages to burn with white-hot intensity. Though not as amateurish or snarling as their debut album, Rope finds the boys flexing their songwriting muscles. The first three songs ("Safe European Home," "English Civil War," and "Tommy Gun") stand among their most powerful and leap from the record with brute force. Though they hit a few clunkers ("Cheapskates"), this album is a near classic and gives a hint of the band to come that would light up the world with London Calling. --Tod NelsonCustomer Reviews:

The Difference Between Powerful Music and Arena-Rock Production.......2006-09-15
It is a solid set of songs marred by the arena-rock production of Sandy Pearlman. The band was disgusted with the final product and it should be no surprise that live sets after the tour to support its release did not feature too many of the cuts.
Too bad, because the U.S. debut - the second album released - finds Joe Strummer and band getting punk'd while absorbing the sights and sounds of Jamiaca in Safe European Home and taking aim at the growing legion of wannabes in All the Young Punks (New Boots and Contracts).
The energy of Tommy Gun and the social commentary in Drug-Stabbing Time and Julie's Been Working with the Drug Squad shows a band getting tighter lyrically and musically.
Give 'em Enough Rope will probably remain the most overlooked studio release by the band. But it is a powerful set that propelled them to greater heights with the rock classic London Calling that was released about a year later.

Corb Lund and his crackerjack band, the Hurtin' Albertans, lassoed a pen full of awards in the recent Canadian Country Music Awards (and the Western Canadian Music Awards), and for anyone just coming to Lund's brand of ranchin' and ropin' tunes, this album (ironically recorded in Nashville) serves as a fine introduction. The baby-faced Canuck blends a prairie upbringing with 10 years as an indie rocker in his last group, the Smalls, and throws in a smattering of acoustic blues, folk, rockabilly, ragtime, and country-rock to balance his traditional cowpoke leanings. While his subject matter generally hangs around the chutes and the plains, or follows the white line down the highway, Lund is so lyrically and rhythmically inventive that special guests Ian Tyson, Ramblin' Jack Elliott, and Riders in the Sky's Ranger Doug and Too Slim probably begged to ride herd. Put your boots up, pull out a can of chew, and get acquainted with the brightest new star under the western moon. --Alanna NashCustomer Reviews:
A Breath of Fresh Air.......2007-05-21
Well, "Hair in my Eyes Like a Highland Steer", does not dissapoint to say the least.
Lund and the Hurtin' Albertans mix the introspective ( The Truth Comes Out, The Rodeo's Over) with the witty ( The Truck Got Stuck, Hurtin' Albertan) to produce a great album full of hooks you will be humming all day.
As a Texan and a rancher, I find it reassuring our "neighbors to the North" share many of our experiences and outlooks. "The Truck Got Stuck" in particular caught my ear, as I have had similar experiences in muddy pastures ( minus the canola seed.)
While these are mainly "cowboy" songs, I think anyone with a love of the West and rural life will find them enjoyable.

It might be tempting to describe Kentucky's Chris Knight as the poor man's Steve Earle (if the original weren't still doing a pretty good job at it). While the hard twang of the guitar and the hardscrabble lyrics recall Earle's early classic albums, Knight continues to establish himself on his fourth release as one of the most powerful (and underrecognized) artists in alternative country. Produced by Gary Nicholson and mixed by Earle's "twangtrust" partner Ray Kennedy, the album pulls no punches, whether rocking the roadhouse at the end of "River Road," venting anger at the developers who are treating Grandpa's land like "Dirt," or detailing a dead-end life in the title track. Yet the redemptive "Saved by Love" and the yearning "Too Close to Home" evoke equally strong emotions that balance the album's darker strains. If "Cry Lonely" isn't a hit for Knight, it deserves to be one for somebody. Knight's eye for detail and command of tone have the compression of great short stories, though Southern Gothic rarely rocks this hard. --Don McLeeseCustomer Reviews:
