Evita was finally filmed in 1996, 20 years after its initial incarnation as a studio-bound rock opera. In between, of course, it was one of the most successful and long-running musicals on either side of the Atlantic. Given such a long history, the film might easily have been a stale anticlimax, fatally holed by our overfamiliarity with songs such as the ubiquitous "Don't Cry for Me, Argentina." On the contrary, it was an impressive and immensely satisfying production. The numbers, augmented by a new song for Eva ("You Must Love Me"), sound fresh and the singing is excellent. Coming from Jonathan Pryce (Peron) and Jimmy Nail (Magaldi), this is hardly a surprise. The real revelation is Antonio Banderas as Che, a kind of one-man Greek chorus commenting on Eva's rise and the price she must pay. His warm tenor dispels memories of previous, rougher interpretations from such singers as David Essex and Colm Wilkinson. Ultimately, though, the star is Madonna. She is totally immersed in the role of Eva from start to finish, her singing ranging from girlish delicacy to a hard-edged stridence as the dictator's wife achieves her goals. Rarely has a film so successfully given a stage show such a new lease on life. --Piers Ford

A Bright & Shining Gem.......2007-07-12
I have always been fascinated by Eva Peron, undoubtedly one of the most fascinating women of the 20th century. Madonna absolutely shines in the title role, and she has never been in finer voice (evidence that the professional vocal lessons she took in order to prepare for the role paid off in a big way). The songs are a dizzyingly diverse array of pop, opera, rock, Latin-flavored and classical, and there is not a dud among them. Among the finest: "Another Suitcase in Another Hall", Eva's self-pitying ode to the pitfalls of having relationships with the wrong type of men (repeatedly); "Good Night & Thank You", a tongue-in-cheek quasi-duet with Che (Antonio Banderas); "High-Flying Adored", a gorgeous but cynical ballad sung by Che about Eva's dubious rise to "power"; "Rainbow High", Eva's narcissistic analysis of how important she is to the Argentine populace; "Buenos Aires", a high-energy, Latin-jazz drenched greeting for the city a teenage Eva has so longed to escape to; "Waltz for Eva & Che", a lilting yet confrontational duet as Che "calls" Eva on what he perceives as phoniness and Eva defiantly and defensively responds in kind. Not only does Madonna turn out a sterling performance, but Antonio Banderas does a spectacular job vocally as Che, the Greek-chorus narrator of the entire story. I realize that "Evita" purists will strongly disagree, but I prefer this version over the Patti Luopne/Broadway original (actually, Elaine Paige originated the role on the London stage, and I found her interpretation of Eva to be bland and insipid). The Broadway version is much brasher and less melodious then the film, which is bright, polished and beautifully melodic. I listen to "Evita" at least once a week, and I never tire of it. Madonna truly made the role of Eva Peron her own, and she should be proud.
Music.......2007-05-28
The CD isn't bad except that a lot of the songs are over played. Madonna does a great job of singing as always. I was surprised that Antonio Bandaras could sing so beautifully.
Better than the show.......2007-03-12
A great movie (of a great show.) Madonna and Anthony Bandares are better than the original cast. Exciting production.
The Best of "Evita".......2006-11-29
"Evita" is one of those musicals that are hard to appeal to general public. The seriousness of the subject, the music itself (hardly any spoken words) and the running time of over two hours can be a little too much. There is no doubt "Evita" is a great movie - the acting, direction and scenery are all outstanding. However, the question is whether it can be easily digested.
The question of "digestion" is also very present when talking about the two different soundtracks of "Evita" available. The first one, titled "EVITA: The Complete Motion Picture Soundtrack" is essentialy the movie itself- a double-disk edition with all possible songs and notes from the movie. The second one, called "EVITA: Music From The Motion Picture", the one you are looking at right now, is a single-disk compilation of the most popular songs. It is more easier to listen to and doesn't include some songs that worked in the movie context itself, but are irrelevant in the comfort of your living room ("Charity Concert/The Art of Impossible" may give some background on Peron himself, but is basically the introduction to the fantastic song "I'd Be Surprisingly Good For You"; "Santa Evita" is a pretty, chorus composition, but only works within the movie). So, if you are a fan of the movie, but are in the mood to listen to its highlights, instead of the whole soundtrack, this is the CD for you. The songs are in a chronological order, so it preserves the plot and the emotional capacity, while it focuses on the best songs of the musical.
The main treasures of "Evita" are Madonna as the title character and Antonio Banderas as Che Guevara. Banderas shines in the songs like "Oh What a Circus" or "And The Money Kept Rolling In", while the Material Queen breathes life into "Don't Cry For Me Argentina" and the Oscar-winner "You Must Love Me". And when they sing together, Madonna and Banderas are absolutely enchanting ("High Flying, Adored", "Waltz for Eva and Che"), because of the genuine chemistry they bring to the story. They make sure that you will enjoy every single song, from the catchy "Buenos Aires", to the touching "Lament", where the powerful orchestra performance will surely send chills down your spine.
Evita for a modern generation.......2006-10-31
Firstly, this recording of Evita was very well made. Most everything from the movie is here, except some orchestral sections (like the end credits). The orchestral arrangments are quite good throughout, with more modern arrangments that make the score sound more relevant to modern audiences.
Vocally, Madonna is alright, but the best part of her performance is her acting, not her voice, and is best experienced watching the movie. If you're looking for a definitive and powerful vocal Evita, look elsewhere. Now, I'm not really a fan of Madonna, but she performed very nicely on this recording. While I've not seen previous Evita productions (I'm only 25), I've heard some recordings, and while Patti LuPone's voice IS better, I personally prefer Madonna's interpretation, even though her vocals are a little weak.
Other performances are very good too, including Jonathan Pryce's Peron and Antonio Banderas' surprisingly good Che. His accent adds a certain authenticity to the role I enjoyed.
I discovered Evita through the movie, so I didn't have previous performances etched in my head to comare this to, so I was quite impressed with this recording. In the end, this recording did precisely what it intended to, brought an amazing work of theater into the modern age to be enjoyed by a new generation.

Much has been made of composer Bernard Herrmann's choice to use only razor-sharp, slashing strings for his score to Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho. And heaven knows it works like a dream (or a nightmare), the music feeling as edgy and colorless as the noir-ish black-and-white photography. But as noticeably effective as the knife-screeching violins are in the famous shower scene (followed by those deadly blows from the basses and cellos), they work just as powerfully--though perhaps not as noticeably--all throughout the picture. Herrmann evokes dread and tension with just a few notes, or captures Janet Leigh's flighty panic in pizzicato as she hits the fateful road to the Bates Motel after impulsively stealing a large sum of money from her employer. --Jim Emerson

Herrmann's Famous Score Complete on CD.......2004-11-22
My favorite classic movie scores are Leonard Bernstein's for ON THE WATERFRONT (1954), Alfred Newman's for THE DIARY OF ANNE FRANK (1959) - and Bernard Herrmann's for PSYCHO (1960). Herrmann composed his all-strings, "black-and-white" score at around the same time he wrote the hauntingly beautiful music for such memorable episodes of THE TWILIGHT ZONE as "Walking Distance" and "The Lonely." The parts of the extensive PSYCHO score that stayed with me most after seeing the movie for the first time were the "flight" theme (when Marion Crane, after having embezzled money, is fleeing in her car from the police); the "temptation" theme (heard as the camera focuses on the stolen money lying on Marion's bed); and, of course, the squealing violins of the two famous murders: Marion's (in the shower) and Detective Arbogast's (on the stairs). All of that music - and in fact, the entire movie score - is captured vividly in this 1996 recording by Joel Mc Neeley and the Royal Scottish National Orchestra. The recorded sound is spacious, the strings lush in the almost-Romantic "Marion" and "Marion and Sam" themes. So great is the PSYCHO score that it fully deserved this complete, modern recording. Let's hope that Mc Neeley and his orchestra record Herrmann's TWILIGHT ZONE themes, too.
Definative.......2004-04-13
Spectacular re-recording of what remains one of the most recognizable and imitated film scores of all time. As usual with McNeely and the RSNO, the performance is both electrifying and exact, and the recording is spot on. Herrmann felt that Hitchcock's black-and-white film needed an equally black-and-white score, so he removed the "color" from the orchestra by limiting his writing strictly to the string section. What he accomplished was amazing in its ability to manipulate one's primal emotions, with or without the film. From the panic-stricken opening titles, through the long passages of drawn-out suspense, to the famous murder "stings," few other scores have done so much to build and shape the overall mood and movement of a movie. This completed Herrmann's trilogy of masterpieces for Hitchcock films, the prior ones being 'Vertigo' and 'North by Northwest.' If the former was his most darkly romantic, and the latter his most light-hearted and adventurous, then this one is easily the bleakest and most relentlessly single-minded. Yet it holds up splendidly as a stand-alone piece of work, brought to life once again under McNeely's direction. I'm not usually a fan of re-recordings, but he and the RSNO seem to get Herrmann's work just right time and again. A must-own if you love film music.
AT THE TOP OF THE ART OF FILM SCORING.......2003-11-16
Can one deny that Bernard Herrmann's score to "Psycho" belongs in the top five of all-time great film scores? I think not.
Joel McNeely and the Royal Scottish National Orchestra have performed the score masterfully with every thrilling, as well as subtle, chord.
Purists may "scoff" that this rendition differs from the one conducted by Herrmann in the film, and to them I say "So what?"
This is merely one ensemble's interpretation of the work of a master as seen and played through the eyes of composer/arranger McNeely.
In other words, it's worth the money to buy and savor one's purchase!
Better than some..........2003-01-15
Varese records has produced many recordings of old movies and even a soundtrack to a book (Star Wars Shadows of the Empire). Some recordings have been hit and miss others have been excellent. This recording fall into the excellent category, the music has a great feel of the movie and the digital sound is a plus. I felt that Joel McNeely and his RSO were actually recording the music for the actual movie themselves. Great work!!
The masterpiece of mystery music.......2002-12-26
It's hard to believe they gave Bernard Herrmann a small orchestra and he worked it out to make a masterpiece in film music! The score resulted in a genious orchestration of strings and high violins that matches with Hitchcock's film in a perfect way.
Joel McNeely rerecords the score very similar to the original, and that is good since we don't have any other score available.
It must be remembered that Psycho soundtrack is much more than the infectuous music for the shower scene, anyone who has seen the mov will agree with with me. It has a great deal of fantastic mystery music, like the one used in "Temptation" or even the variations of the main theme used in the runaway cues, which create a very quick, suspenseful mood. My personal fave is "The Car", what a sound!
The score never develops to an comforting romantic cue, however "Marion and Sam" gives a lighter touch of their troubled romance.
It must be said that the "murder" themes are very similar to the original in the mov (they sound strong, and that's good) with the exception of "Discovery" part, where you'll not find the strings of the shower scene, there is instead the original music Herrmann wanted.
That's what it is-tam tam tam tam tam! That's how begins this must have score!

MOSTLY THE COMPLETE PICTURE.......2004-11-11
Blondie is a band that you can never get tired of. Their music is done with style and creativity. I purchased this album and was excited because I thought it would be perfect. It is except some songs are shortened. "Island Of Lost Souls" is (3:50 sec), but the album version is (4:40 sec). It was hard to hear Debbie's voice on "Heart Of Glass". The very begining of "The Tide Is High" is sort of cut off. On the good side we get the (5:36 sec) version of "Rapture". Deb's solo work is great and "Well Did You Ever" is a pretty fun song. If your a fan of Blondie then buy this. It's ok.
Probably The Best.......2004-01-18
This is a must have album for any fan or music collector. The album has it all and it leaves nothing to chance. It also introduces the listener to some tracks of Debbie's from her solo albums as well (which I think a lot of people have really overlooked) So yes the album is a bit pricey but look at what you get. It's a good buy especailly here on Amazon where at the record shop I've seen it priced as high as 39.99 and you have to have it through a special order.
HITS, HITS, HITS AND MORE HITS!.......2004-01-06
Well c'mon. What more could you want? This is a glorious batch of singles that most artists would give their left thingie for. What a swell party this is!!
A COMPLETE PLEASURE.......2001-06-08
Blondie started out as a bunch of poppy punks, progressed into artpopdom and in the process became one of he biggest selling acts of the late 70s/early 80s. With Deborah Harry, the priginal blonde of pop, as frontperson and a repertoire of fluent, supercharged songs like Heart Of Glass, I'm Always Touched By Your Presence, Dear and Denis, they jostled for number one position with those other blond phenomena of the period: Abba and the Police. This album proves that Blondie have aged well. Other highlights include Sunday Girl, Picture This and Dreaming, which overshadow Harry's later solo material such as French Kissing In The USA. Not that she had lost her touch - her duet with Iggy Pop, Well, Did You Evah!, displays lots of streetsmart exuberance.
Down & Dirty Good.......2000-06-14
The Complete Picture is one of the best compilations I've ever heard. It's obvious that a lot of thought went into not only picking the tracks but also to the order in which they appear. This CD tells the story of an incredible band named Blondie -- and it doesn't leave out the "import parts." Complete Picture has both "French Kissin' in the USA" and "Island of Lost Souls." It has the surreal "Well, Did You Evah!." The sound quality is sharp and clear. This is one well-mastered CD.
Complete Picture has just about all of Blondie's best known songs. (The only glaring omission I can think of is "X Offender" and I'm probably the only person who likes it. Grin.)
If you're looking for a "best of" Blondie, you've found it. The Complete Picture is worth the extra cost. Buy it. You'll be glad you did.

Customer Reviews:
Tenebre.......2002-10-04
This lavish reissue is brilliant ; it's such a pleasure to listen to this electronic music which has true sensitive dephts in spite of its synthetical orchestration ! Probably the most inventive & exciting film music by the Goblin (or, in fact, some of them). Just listen to the title track : I'm always amazed by its power, its ability to suggest threat & its subtlety !
Simonetti Morante Pignatelli.......2001-05-12
Although technically not a "Goblin" CD, it reunites Claudio Simonetti (keyboards), Massimo Morante (guitar), and Fabio Pignatelli (bass) to compose the soundtrack to Dario Argento's classic, "Tenebre". Utilizing a drum machine gives the whole score a new wave-ish feel that's a little jarring at first if you're used to their prior work, but they build off of it in amazing ways (listen to the title track and how the mood and feel changes despite the 4/4 time kept by the drum machine; quite awesome, really). "Slow Circus" has a very queasy feel about the descent into madness as an adolescent; "Waiting Death" shows what incredible moods you can create just by remixing the "Tenebre" track; same with the reprise.
This CD expands from the original album with 11 tracks, making the playing time to over an hour and the sound quality is quite good.
Recommended.
Guilty Pleasure.......2000-10-06
Okay, let's face it. The music to this movie is very cheesy and bizarre. But, it is definately never less than entertaining to listen to. It's my personal favorite among the Argento soundtacks. The use of the electrnic instruments is fantastic (particularly on track 6). At times the flow with the melody can be dreamlike, at other times the music can just be outrageous. A true mix of gothic and rock.
Just make sure you see the movie before you get the soundtrack. This is not for those who find Brittany Spears their cup of tea.

Customer Reviews:
Nothing to stand out........2002-10-16
This cd recording quality is mediocre. The soundtrack is ok but I like the inferno track only, the other tracks are very similar to each other. Overall: DISCRETE.
DON'T turn off those LIGHTS!!!.......2000-11-02
Of the various Keith Emerson soundtracks I've managed to track down (not an easy task) this remains one of my favorites. Moody, spooky, disturbing, THRILLING. You don't wanna be depressed when you put this on-- it MIGHT just push you over the EDGE!! The finale ("Cigarettes etc.") is certain to remind one of Keith's ELP work, and worth having even if soundtracks aren't your thing. I rented the film AFTER hearing this-- I'm NOT sure the movie lives up to the soundtrack that accompanies it! (Though it's hard to tell with Italian imports WHAT may have been lost in the "translation"-- OR the editing room!!) I paid between $30-35 for a Japanese import of this-- but I would have regretted not having it all these years. (BONUS track? Damn!!) Only Keith's masterpiece, NIGHTHAWKS, surpasses this to my ears.
Beautiful, soothing, insane, dark and spooky.......2000-10-26
I came across this album in a department store in early 1981 and never heard any of it before but, since it was Keith Emerson, I bought it anyway. It was Keith Emerson so, it had to be great. I was right. The main title theme "Inferno", is really a beautiful piece of music and surfaces a few times throughout the album in various arrangments. An especially pretty version occurs on a track called "Elisa's Story" and it sounds like Keith Emerson is plucking the piano from the inside and playing it like a harp. The whole soundtrack is not all peaceful though, and the music gets very intense and loud on a few tracks. About halfway through "A Cat Attic Attack", you can easily picture this as being the soundtrack to the end of the world. Then things calm down and alternate between being being beautiful and spooky. The closing track, "Cigarettes, Ices, Etc", has a chase scene kind of feel and rhythmn to it, with great keyboards, percussion and violins. I never saw this movie but, its not a requirement to enjoy this soundtrack. It sets a perfect mood all by itself and you can imagine your own movie to fit the music. As beautiful as some parts of this album can be, if you listen to it alone late at night, it can be very scary. To me, that is a sign of great music.
Good for Keith fans.......2000-04-08
I had just bought this and had it on my turntable on a sunny spring day in Baton Rouge, LA when I heard a knock at my door. When I opened it, it was the neighbor. "Could you turn that down? It's really scary."
Finally, a classic returns!.......1998-11-06
When Dario Argento saw Emerson, Lake & Palmer live on stage, he was particularly impressed by Keith Emerson's performance and asked him to write the soundtrack for his new opus, "Inferno". The rest is musical history.
After many years without a CD release of this masterpiece of modern film music writing, the italian label Cinevox re-released it, and, as is policy at Cinevox's, added previously unreleased material, this time in form of a 10+ min "Outtakes Suite" - which finally includes some fine tunes previously dearly missed on the album.
For those who know the film: The impact of the soundtrack is not in the least bit inhibited by the lack of visual cues, sometimes even heightened, e.g. in Track #12, "Mark's discovery", which is an extremely beautifully structured/layered track that almost gets lost in the films vivid imagery. Afficionados of EL&P will be pleased to find "Taxi Ride (Rome)" (#3), which is a version of G. Verdi's "Va pensiero" (Nabucco) , absolutely on par with their other Classical Re-inventions. (Interestingly, the fact that it is a "cover version" isn't mentioned anywhere in the CD's booklet.) The sound quality of the recording is extremely good, so that the whole range of the orchestra Keith Emerson worked with can be wonderfully explored.
What more is to say? This is a must. Period.

Customer Reviews:
Wilmot.......2007-01-10
Well done, with the only drawback that Joshua Rifkind is not at the piano. Sometimes the pace is too frenetic.
Delightful colletion of Scott Joplin's music.......2006-08-17
This is a wonderful collection of Scott Joplin's music. Delightful to own, to play over and over and over.
Avoid.......2004-10-30
I have to agree with "A music fan" is his review of March 2003.
The piano used is poor, and not even all that well in tune. The recorded sound quality is muffled and 'processed'-sounding.
And the playing, I am afraid, is an insult to Joplin. What a pity to produce so full a set, and to do it so badly. A travesty.
If you want a superb Joplin set, played "as wrote", on a good concert grand and played with verve and style, and well-recorded, it's got to be the new Guido Nielsen 4 CD set on the Basta label (Basta 30-91262).
For a really fine single CD recorded on a top-notch piano and with playing that brings out all the elegance in Joplin's music (which it isn't wrong to do - Joplin put it in there), try the new Naxos CD played by Alexander Peskanov (Naxos 8.559114).
The Zimmerman set, I am afraid, must be consigned to the dustbin. A pity.
One Star for Pity.......2003-05-05
My review in two statements: DON'T BUY IT. EVER.
One star for pity - and for the effort of going to the trouble of learning Scott Joplin's complete works. I know it must have been quite a task getting the sheet music for these works and it must have been quite a task learning them, but I cannot honestly say that this is a good recording. Richard Zimmerman plays these works on a piano with bad quality sound, and he plays these works with his own embellishments and in his own style. If you're going to take liberties with a written score, you'd might as well not even try to play it at all. Either play it as written, or don't play it. Why can't people understand that?
The Complete Works?? I think not.......2002-08-06
I bought the CD entitled the Complete Works of Scott Joplin but upon receiving it I found that it only contained 14 tracks from the Complete Works book. The CD at the price is certainly a good buy even with the 14 tracks but it should be more correctly labled as the "Almost" complete works - "Sort - Of" Complete works or maybe A Partial Compilation of the Complete Works but a Complete Works it is not. It appears that a more Complete Works also has the same label.. Or maybe I am missing something..

Customer Reviews:
One disc of a larger set.......2003-12-16
Let's clear up something here that Amazon and LaserLight have not--this disc DOES NOT contain the complete works of Scott Joplin. This is just one disc from a set of five that LaserLight put out containing the complete published piano music of Scott Joplin played by Richard Zimmerman. Unfortunately, LaserLight has not numbered the five discs in the set, so each one purports to contain the "complete" works. Very poor organization. (Besides Joplin wrote more than piano music... no Joplin set should be considered "complete" without a full recording of his opera "Treemonisha.")
The playing on this disc is fairly good-I've seen Richard Zimmerman perform in person and he's certainly capable of playing ragtime well-but by no means are the recordings here the best interpretation of Joplin's music. Sometimes I feel Zimmerman plays too fast, at other times it sounds jerky, and at other times wrong notes are painfully obvious. Additionally, the sound quality varies from track to track, with some being marred by heavy tape hiss or distortion. These were originally recorded for budget LP's label back in the 1970s (I've seen them on Olympic and Murray Hill labels) and LaserLight has not done much to improve the sound quality. The music's there, and for casual listening on a boombox or car stereo, one might not notice the technical flaws, but on a good stereo system, they significantly detract from the overall listening experience.
If you're in the market for Joplin's music, you'd do yourself a favor to ignore this disc (even if the price is inviting) and invest in a better set like Joshua Rifkin's Joplin CD or William Albright's Joplin 2-CD set. Pianist Scott Kirby is currently releasing a complete Joplin set in four volumes, and I'd highly recommened looking into getting those before buying this disc.
Complete Works, 14 tracks? No way!.......2003-11-25
A CD purporting to be Joplin's complete works would certainly have more than 14 tracks. Instead try "The Complete Piano Music Of Scott Joplin," ASIN B000003QWN; four disks containing 52 tracks! I think this would be far more likely to be his "complete works" though I think even this one must be leaving out some of the compositions of this prolific ragtime composer. I know for a fact 14 songs wouldn't be his complete... anything! If you just want an introduction to his music, this CD may be all the Joplin you need, but be sure to rub out the word "complete" when your CD arrives. :)

Customer Reviews:
COMPLETE PLEASURE.......2006-03-18
Blondie started out as a bunch of poppy punks, progressed into art-popdom and in the process became one of the biggest selling acts of the late 70s/early 80s. With Deborah Harry, the original blonde of pop, as frontperson and a repertoire of fluent, supercharged songs like Heart Of Glass, I'm Always Touched By Your Presence, Dear and Denis, they jostled for number one position with those other blond phenomena of the period: Abba and the Police. This album proves that Blondie's music has aged well. Other highlights besides the aforementioned include Sunday Girl, Picture This and Dreaming, which overshadow Harry's later solo material such as French Kissing In The USA. Not that she had lost her touch - her duet with Iggy Pop, Well, Did You Evah!, displays lots of streetsmart exuberance.
