Album Description

"Borrowed Time," picks up right where his 2006 award winning release, "The Green Field" left off. Once again, Khan is joined by the familiar names of of John Patitucci, Jack DeJohnette, and Manolo Badrena exploring compositions by Thelonious Monk, Ornette Coleman, McCoy Tyner, and a moving version of "You're My Girl" which was written by Steve's late father.

4 out of 5 stars Keep it going Steve!.......2007-07-01

Another great outing by Khan who lately seems to be in come back mode...and as in some of his past records seems to have a foot in straight-yet-fusion-tinged jazz and a more latin fusioned with jazz music that at times reminds of the best Santana percusion passages mixed with Khan's composition style (particularly the first 3 Santana albums)...don't be put off by the description...this is not latin-jazz. It is still a real jazz record. Only 1 had to be skiped while playing the cd ( Luna y Arena, which to my ears just doesn't fit well with the rest of the cd...it is sung in spanish by Gabriela Anders and it is just too soft and romantic). Still, without that track you get more than an hour woth of incredible music...Get it specially if you liked 'The Green field'...and yes, De johnette is on fire here!

5 out of 5 stars another excellent offering from an overlooked player.......2007-06-22

Great follow-up to last years The Green Field album, this is an articulate & thoughtful set - not just pure speed, A.

5 out of 5 stars NWOBHM at its best.......2005-01-16

(Living On) Borrowed Time (1982.) Diamond Head's second album.

Following the release of their first LP, Lighting To The Nations/The White Album, Diamond Head got a contract with a record company. Their first album, while excellent, was released on the band's independent label, and therefore, didn't sell all that well. Would being recruited by a major label give the band the boost of popularity that they so desparately needed? Read on for my review of Diamond Head's second LP, (Living On) Borrowed Time.

Getting onto a major label, sadly, didn't help Diamond Head's popularity any. And that's a real shame, because this, the band's first major label LP, is their FINEST HOUR. But sadly, it's also their most underrated effort. In The Heat Of The Night kicks things off. Excellent guitar melodies appear here, but what really stand out are the vocal talents of Sean Harris. A slower song, but not quite a ballad, this is one of the best DH songs ever released. To Heaven From Hell is another excellent track. Though not quite up to the songs that come right before or after it, this tune is pretty damn good nonetheless. Call Me is one of the album's two best tracks (In The Heat Of The Night is the other.) This one, like every other new song on the album, is a slower-paced but still heavy melodic effort, this one dealing with separation of love. You've got to hear it to believe it. The title track is pretty cool, too. The verses are mediocre in comparison to some of the other material on the album, but the pre-chorus features an interesting, harder-sounding melody. Definitely a worthwhile track. Don't You Ever Leave Me, the last composition unique to this release, starts out another slower-paced heavy melody, but at a point switches to an almost R&B sound. Don't let this fool you though. The experimental effort was indeed a successful one. The two tracks remaining are remakes of two songs from the band's first album. These DO NOT top the originals, but are solid nonetheless. In the end, this is a damn fine album, but were you expecting anything less?

Currently (as of early 2005), the only version of this album available on CD is the Japanese NWOBHM series reissue. Sadly though, this album is very hard to find, and you're probably going to have to end up ordering it. It's tough to come by, but trust me - if you like the band, it's worth hunting down.

In the end, this is Diamond Head's best album. Sure, I could care less about the remake tracks, but they don't change my overall views of this album - it's a masterpiece through and through. If you liked the first album and want to see what the band went onto afterwards, hunt this down. Chances are you'll share my opinion and like this even more than the debut!

5 out of 5 stars GREATEST ALBUM.......2002-02-06

... I own the MCA release on vinyl that was released in the USA. This is one of my favorite albums ever released period! I bought this simply because of the Rodney Matthew's cover art depicting Michael Moorcock's Elric. What lay inside the album did not dampen my expectations. The precision of the band, their story telling, the music, it was all a finely woven tapestry of metal and fantasy....

Sean Harris portrays a vivid picture with his soul searching vocals and Brian Tatler adds great solos and rhythms with his guitar. The rhythm section builds the tempo and the background vocals and harmonies are great. There isn't a bad song on this album, but my favorites are "Am I Evil", "To Heaven From Hell", and "Borrowed Time". The rest of the album is great music, as well, but the Elric tie-ins are special to me. "Call Me", "Lightning to the Nations, and "In the Heat of the Night" should have all been hits! "Don't You Ever Leave Me" is also a very good song. If you have the money to spend or buy great music, this is worthy of your money. This is by far the best album Diamond Head ever released!

This is my opinion based on 6 albums and 4 different CDs, so, please understand that I am somewhat biased. This was also the first recording I had ever heard by Diamond Head and I have to admit I was hooked and still search for their music.

3 out of 5 stars it is okay i guess.......2000-04-02

This album is alright i guess. not nearly as good as diamond heads debut Lightning to the nations!

5 out of 5 stars See for yourself why Diamond Head is a legend ..........1999-02-21

A slick Japanese CD transfer of Diamond Head's classic 1982 "Borrowed Time" LP, in the Euro-release running order (the U.S. release LP had "Call Me" leading the A-side and some other tracks moved around). Sounds as fresh as ever. Not as raw as the original "Lightning to the Nations" vinyl, but better than some of the mid-80's remixes by DH guitarist Brian Tatler that Metal Blade has been trotting out. If the opening of "Am I Evil" doesn't make your hair stand up, check your pulse. Be ready for the definitive recording of "In the Heat of the Night." Includes lyrics, original album cover art and interior pix. Also has an insert(mostly in Japanese)listing other disks in MCA Japan's "NWOBHM" series. Tygers of Pan Tang, anyone?

5 out of 5 stars Along with Priestess and Danko Jones, the best rawk from Canada you'll hear!.......2006-08-09

The first time I heard the Illuminati, was as the opening act for Andrew WK. Along with everyone else in the audience, I was blown away. It provided an opening dialogue between the rest of the crowd as we shook our heads in shock or tried to find out more about the band. Their music was a cross-breed of the Dixie Dregs, Black Sabbath, Jet, the White Stripes and Thin Lizzy. Again when I saw them a year later opening for Alice Cooper, they pulled the same magic trick and blew away the audience within the first two tracks. People in the process of buying beer rushed back in to watch the band.

Needless to say when I saw an album had been released I was curious to hear if their sonic prowess translated to a disc. Currently, I've thrown my Wolfmother cds off the changer and will keep the Illuminati on permanent rotation. A Powerful and bright production, the disc almost feels like it was recorded live. Like the early Vanhalen albums, there's a rough quality to each song that retains the incredible feeling of their stage show - just perfectly recorded.

Easily one of the best cds of this year, 2006. Standout favs are Goin' Down and On Borrowed Time and Jericho Mile. The incuded video sums up the band perfectly. File it under RAWK.
