After No Doubt sold more than 10 million copies of Tragic Kingdom, riding that wave of success without toppling over must have been a daunting mission. No sweat for No Doubt. The band toiled as national unknowns with a loyal local following for a decade before that album's release, and during that time the band members were learning how to be better songwriters and musicians. The follow-up, Return of Saturn, glides along that continuum of songcraft perfection. The band presents a cleaner, less apologist representation of their influences. They pull off some of the more difficult maneuvers of pure reggae, ground-pounding ska, and Cars-esque New Wave. Gwen Stefani, the fearless Orange County princess, belts a powerful pout, her Mae West-meets-Siouxsie Sioux vocal bravado the bungee cord that springs in between the band's retro tendencies and SoCal pop-punk attitude. It seems believable that she could stamp her foot and always get her way, but her self-deprecating confessions evade brattiness. Songs like "Bathwater" and "Ex-Girlfriend" reveal the singer's vulnerability to being hurt or dumped on, and the band's sense of humor and exploration (albeit firmly controlled) matches the songs' sentiments. This group is growing out and tightening up, and while the rest of the ska-punk surfer-dude bands do nothing more than repeat history, No Doubt is creating it. --Beth Massa

5 out of 5 stars Their Best.......2007-01-08

I believe this is No Doubt's best cd. The hits on this album are great: Ex-Girlfriend, Simple Kind of Life, Bathwater.... but i also love the other songs..... Suspension without Suspense, Magic's in the Make-up, Artificial Sweetener.... wow... I love all the songs. I am a huge No Doubt/Gwen Stefani fan...so I'm very familiar with all their CDs.... If you like No Doubt at all....this is the CD to own.

5 out of 5 stars Return Of No Doubt.......2006-12-27

It would take another 5 years from "Tragic Kingdom" to make the follower "Return of Saturn" and many things happened since, On the previous we found Gwen Stefani sing about the painful breakup with bandmember Tony Kanal where most of the songs were Ska/Punkish, now 5 years later Gwen was over 30 and was not only more mature but wanted to get married and start a family also. The music was also closer to New Wave, like early Cars even if some songs are still on fammiliar territory. While this may have alienated some fans from "Tragic Kingdom" this album show growth as a band and "Saturn" works fantastic as a concept, instead of recycling what worked in the past No Doubt tried something new and it worked just fine. However, there aren't as many highlights for the charts on this album but it's still perhaps the concept of songs that makes it this good. "Ex-Girlfriend" reminds you of their previous album's song's. A catchy ska-punk song and also a hit single. This song is actually about Gwen's future husband Gavin Rossdale. Second single called "Simple Kind of Life" is one of many simular song themes of this album which deals about Gwen's maturing and realizing what she really wants in life. In the video for it, you'll also see her getting married. The song is more of a midtempo but equally strong as the first single. "Bathwater" and "New" were also released in some countries as single's and the first a catchy uptempo is pretty good. The second is a new wave song. Good songs continue throughout the album with "Artificial Sweeter" about trying to be happy on the surface but feeling bad on the inside "Magic's In The Makeup" wether people would still love her underneath the makeup and "Suspension Without Suspense" about being in a relationship that doesn't go forward. I think No Doubt's music is excellent, their sound is unique full of admiration, but their best ability is to create feelings that fans can relate to and songs that really mean something. This album is a prime example of that where many songs are part of a concept with a mature Gwen Stefani dealing with relationship eventually leading to marriage and a family. I really can see why this album has a special place in many fans hearts, even if there weren't many hit singles like "Tragic Kingdom" here. Needless to say, this is another fantastic album from one of the best bands.

5 out of 5 stars creative and artistic no doubt album.......2006-10-31

Although tragic kingdom had strong singles, I didn't think the album was all that as a whole. Return of Saturn is much better. No Doubt experiments with different musical styles and have creative songs like Bathwater, Magic's in the Makeup, Artificial Sweetner, Simple Kind of Life. I prefer this over gwen's solo work.

1 out of 5 stars Best CD EVER!!!!!!!.......2006-08-03

First of all, i'd like to start out saying that No Doubt is the best band ever, in my opinion. I have all their cd's and not even one can compare to the other. However, i have to say Return of Saturn is my fav. Each song has it's own unique quality and all of the songs are my fav. I also luv how the cd is so mellow and chilled, although there are a lot of emotions thrown in it. sometimes you want to cry, scream, shout, etc! and i luv how Gwen puts character into all of the songs. you can really feel the pain burning inside her in some of the more tragic love songs! not only are the songs amazing but i feel i can relate to a lot of them! Magic's in the Makeup has really inspired me! as a girl in this world, it's sometimes really difficult to maintain a good self image. sometimes when im struggling with that i listen to that song b cuz i know i'm not alone and i can relate to everything Gwen says! I cant even describe how awesome the other songs are but i totally recomend it to anyone of any age!!

5 out of 5 stars "I shudder to be honest....".......2006-07-30

This is one of the most beautiful No Doubt albums.
I just want to take it away from everyone and keep it stashed under my pillow, and then I'd take it out simply for my own pleasure.
If you know what I mean, score 100!

I don't want to make a song-by-song review, 'cause the "I love this song" phrase, turns into a boring one.
The version of this album I love the most, is the Latin American version.
It had two bonus tracks, and they were: Big Distraction (Also included in Everything In Time) And a great instrummental version of Too Late. 4 songs from this album were released as a single, and they were: "New", "Ex-girlfriend", "Simple kind of life" and "Bathwater", from 1999 to 2000. "Magic's in the makeup" was performered in a Dawson's Creek episode, in the 6th season. "Marry me" is a boring, annoying song.
"Home Now", "Comforting Lie", "Suspension without suspense" and "Dark blue" are very good. "S-T-A-R-I-N-G Problem" sounds good. It it so funny. "Six Feet Under" is a great song of this album. I listen to it when it's my birthday. "Today is my birthday, I get one every year. And some day...hard to believe but I'll be buried six feet underground..." "Artificial Sweetener" is another great song. I think, it should have been released as a single, and it would have been number one.

Well, this is a very good album, 9/10.
Be sure you pick a copy of this album up.
I hope you find this review helpful.
I recommend this album.

Artist: Unto Ashes
CD: Saturn Return
Reviewed by: Mike Ventarola

The idea behind the title of this CD, as gleaned from the their press release, indicates that every 29 years, Saturn completes a rotational cycle through ones birth chart. Basically, the planetary restoration to that position signals the end of our youthful period, bringing with it "judgment and destruction, harvest and rebirth."

For those with a penchant for astrology, Saturn is also a no-nonsense planetary energy steeped in melancholia and art on a grand scale.

The first noticeable thing with this release is the brilliant cover artwork of an oil painting by Madeline von Foerster. This is stunning art that appropriately demarcates the dark beauty and decadence of the music contained therein. The artist's website is www.baphomatty.com for those wishing to discover more about this impressively talented lady.

This sophomore release continues the proclivity of apocalyptic, pagan-inspired, medieval folk music that accompanied their first release, Moon Oppose Moon, however it veers miles ahead of that release on many levels.

The songs delve into hypnotic rhythms that are at times layered against a backdrop of disconcerting surroundings that vacillate from searing to indifferent emotions. Each track of medieval themes and textures are chiseled with a sculptor's uncanny precision. The harmonization between ancient texts and original lyrics is tantamount to flawless as are the craftsmanship of the musicians and the accompanying vocalizations.

Unto Ashes deliver a thematic message for those with ears to hear. Apart from the mournful essences that envelopes each tune, there was quite a bit of the exotic and tastefully erotic skillfully woven through the utilization of Middle Eastern instrumentation. All acts, whether sacred, profane or sensual ultimately lead towards and ending or demise of sorts.

The subject and title gives further rise to personal introspection where we are gently nudged to correlate the path of our life every 29 years. Rather than meander through a list of goals of where we want to be in a particular time frame, we are asked to reflect upon that which will die in that cycle of time. Entering a rumination of such a nature through that type of chasm artfully explores living death, something that few have deliberated to any extent. We will not be the same every 29 years no matter how much one fights time and its onslaught against our mortality. Simply put, this CD transcends music. It serves the purpose of genius art that beckons us to question and envision life through the eyes of the artist. This genius of making us envision themes and messages from the artists' perspective seems to be a running thread with all signed Projekt artists. Without the skillful visions causing us to cogitate the varied essences of life, most of us would be enshackled in a life that was no more meaningful than a run on sentence.

5 out of 5 stars imaginative and refreshing.......2001-07-18

I tend to stray away from most projekt releases (they're often too "gothic" for my taste) but projekt has stumbled upon a band that is out of the ordinary. Not often do I hear a cd where track after track after track I crave more and more and more. From the opening dulcimer I was hooked! If you like Dead Can Dance, Death in June, Coil (check out the cover version) etc., you may find interest in this release. They're from New York!! Extremely creative, never boring, intelligent, and beautiful. I look forward to their next endeavor.

5 out of 5 stars How many literary references can you get on one record?.......2001-06-30

Alas, there aren't any original Latin lyrics on this recording, Unto Ashes' second full length disc. So we'll just have to make do with Petrarch (-Morte, O merce-); Lord Brooke, an Elizabethan sonneteer (-When As Man's Life-); Maeterlinck (-They Killed Three Little Maids-); and Ronsard (-A Sa Maîtresse-). Obviously we're dealing with one of the best read bands, ever. There hasn't been a pop group this literary since Ed Sanders, Tuli Kupferberg, and the Fugs recited Blake and Swinburne to a beatnik beat.

You also get everybody's favourite wicked uncle Al Crowley's -Hymn to Pan- [an inspired idea! surprised I haven't heard of anyone doing it before.] They also pay homage to Coil with a cover of -Ostia (The Death of Pasolini)-.

Another standout track with original music and lyrics is -Serve Me-, which is one of the harder rocking cuts on the record, a nod to the dancefloor. Early and world music instruments share space with synthesizer and guitar on most of the tracks.

We're obviously miles away from anything that could be recognised as descending from the breakup of punk rock. Still, the musicianship and atmosphere here is usually equal to their grand ambitions. This is an ideal record for any Pre-Raphaelite wannabes.

5 out of 5 stars No Doubts "Return" was worth its wait.......2000-06-22

Even though it has been 5 years since no doubt spun into the mainstream music scene with a Ska/Alternative hit album, their new album "Return of Saturn" proves that they are talented musicians with Staying power. Their sound has matured as with the lyrics. Even with a few subtle electronic type sounds that give the album a "futuristic" type appeal. The album features hit songs like Ex-Girlfriend, New, and "Simple kind of Life," along with bonus tracks "Big Distraction" and "Full Circle," that are not available on the US version of the album, and in my opinion these 2 songs are great tracks that should have been placed on every release. Over all this is a great CD that has the ability to please not only die hard No Doubt fans, but new-comers as well. "Return of Saturn" will have you returning for more and more!

            Album Description

Surviving Saturn's Return is a collection of twelve songs that explore the change that comes with growing awareness of the internal and external worlds in which we live. King delivers soul-searching lyrics with a folk-rock, heartland sound that flows from soft, thoughtful ballads to rousing, edgy rock.
