5 out of 5 stars Master At Work.......2005-06-08

Never mind about exotica, tiki, virtual tourism, disney soundtracks, white suburban 1950s. Did Les Baxter really think like that?

Both these albums showcase exactly what Les Baxter's music was all about - haunting melodies, luscious harmonies, ingenious and often downright experimental arrangements and - more than anything - a wonderful, sparkling compositional mind with surprising subtlety and emotional depth. Probably some of the most atmospheric music you will ever hear.

People speaking of Les Baxter as "Easy Listening" is like labelling Brian Wilson simply as "Classic Rock". Was "Pet Sounds" about sun surf and girls? Should tracks like "Mozambique" and "Oasis Of Dakhla" really just be labelled as suburbia , space age pop or lounge music? There's far too much going on here and way too much depth in those melody lines for this music to be simply pigeonholed as "Exotica". Les Baxter is in a different league altogether.

Highly recommended cd release.

Also look out for "The Exotic Moods Of...." double cd compilation which is the best place to start if you're new to Les Baxter.

More please!!

4 out of 5 stars A sumptuous jungle boat ride!.......2003-01-13

Les Baxter always got less attention that quasi-competitor Martin Denny, but I find his orchestrations peppier, indeed a bit campier, but more colorful and much more fun. "Tamboo" isn't quite as wonderful as Baxter's "Ritual of the Savage"(which I found as an import), but it picks up after the first few tracks and has some brilliantly mad, sparkling moments of manic taboo, a collage of primitive sounds that will put you in the heart of the Amazon(or Disney's Jungle Cruise ride, take your pick). "Skins" is a somewhat more intimate album, but has just as many pleasures. Also, the cover art is worth the price alone. Fabulous stuff for bachelor and bachelorette pads.

5 out of 5 stars If Only Reality Were As Good As This.......2003-01-02

How do you describe exotica to people who don't know what it is? Middle aged white guys writing Polynesian music in the 1950's? American cultural imperialism rewriting native music to make it less threatening to Ward and June Cleaver? Or a few composers who drew non-Western influenes into the lounge style of the time? Whatever the answer is exotica is wonderous music. To quote the notes that come with it: "Put a Baxter record on the hi-fi and the kids, dogs, and lawn mower are transformed into a realm of half-naked women, jungle verandas, and tropical libations." It's tiki escapism. As for the albums included, Tamboo is great, a perfect album of exotica by one of the genre's masters. Each song is a mood piece taking the listener to a places such as Tehren, Havana, and Rio. But these are safe places where nothing bad happens and the temperature is always perfect, idealized sonic locales for relaxing with a cool blue drink. Skins on the other hand is emphasizes drums. That creates a rater jarring transition from one album to the other. While fine on its own, it seems an odd choice to accompany Tamboo. Still its great to have these on CD. Exotica has been much maligned and forgotten. People like Baxter, Martin Denny, and Arthur Lyman were all geniuses at what they did. As odd as the genre is it should not be forgotten again.

5 out of 5 stars Tamboo/Skins.......2000-11-09

What a pleasure seeing these albums finally released on CD. The exotic music of Tamboo was so ahead of its time. The reproduction is very good even though it was recorded in monophonic. Les Baxter was such a great inovator of special sounds and only lately are people recognizing what beautiful and original music he produced. This album is a joy to listen to and one can only hope more of his "exotic" albums become available.

5 out of 5 stars A masterpiece of 1981, Amazing!!!!.......2006-05-25

this album its one of the best albums that i ever heard, remember the first eighties band that sound like 90s style... i born in the 80, i not live the age but i feel that days, the ny art... basquiat... and things like that remembert that first album of a great band, all the songs are a jewel, are so diferent to hits of the band like Under the Milky Way... or Destination of the Starfish album... its a first sound of the church amazing... unique... i prefer this first album that first albums of R.E.M for compare with a band of the same years and same sound, but this its better! a lot! ***** stars just buy it, so the price its high, i want buy for see the videos... i like that separe the original album from the bonus...

1. For A Moment We're Strangers ***** (wow a happy morning song...)
2. Chrome Injury ***** (great.......)
3. The Unguarded Moment ***** (amazing)
4. Memories In Future Tense ***** (wow a huge riff, perfect)
5. Bel-Air ***** (perfect end of a slow great song)
6. Is This Where You Live ***** (great a little diferent to others)
7. She Never Said **** (good to normal)
8. Fighter Pilot... Korean War ***** (great little strange cool)

5 out of 5 stars Simply a classic.......2006-03-23

This recording is on my desert island list (along with The Blurred Crusade). It is an absolute must for any fans of The Church.

5 out of 5 stars Good Album.......2004-11-03

I first heard this band when I saw the video for The Unguarded Moment. The lyrics helped me get through some hard times when I was a teenager. I have a couple of hits collections but this is the only studio album I have ever owned by The Church. I think the American version is better than the Australian version. Instead of Chrome Injury (good song), She Never Said, and Fighter Pilot - Korean War the American version had Too Fast For You, Sisters, and Tear It All Away (great song). But the "box" cd has all of these songs and a few videos. There is nothing flashy as far as musicianship goes, but the songs are well written with catchy guitars and good vocal melodies. One of my favorites!

4 out of 5 stars Long before Milky Way, The Church brilliance began here.......2003-09-10

In 1980 Sydney unleashed several huge bursts of new talent. In that year The Sunnyboys released their amazing single "Alone With You" and INXS began their world conquering career with "Just Keep Walking". Into this rich environment The Church launched their mammoth 2nd single "The Unguarded Moment", one of Australia's most memorable 80s singles. This superior pop song continues to send jangles down my spine to this day, on its own it justifies owning The Church's fine 1981 debut album "Of Skins And Heart". Listening to this album nowadays reveals just how well The Church's early music has aged. They were lucky to be recognised early by EMI and thus well-known producer Bob Clearmountain added his touch to this watertight set of edgy guitar pop songs. Along with the high of "Unguarded Moment", my other highlights would be the pulsating edge of "Memories In Future Tense", the crying guitars of "She Never Said", and the final track (of the original LP), the hypnotic "Don't Open The Door To Strangers". This re-mastered version features extra B-sides and video making it a solid buy. "Of Skins And Hearts" may seem to lack some of the latter Church's trademark mood which began emerging on "Blurred Crusade" (and was further refined on "Seance" and "Heyday"), but as a new band The Church showed early evidence of unique cohesion in this seminal work. For those unfamiliar with The Church this is as good a starting point as any: get familiar with this fine band by starting at the beginning.

On its sophomore effort, this British quintet moves from the Beatles and Byrds influences of its likable debut to an edgier punk pop sound. The thickened distortion in the guitars and the more prominent pessimism in the lyrics don't spoil the pleasures of the music, however. The lyrics are simple, but Nick Cope's vocals and Nick Burton's guitar are at once melodic and personal, and they feed off the energy of the rhythm section to make these songs causes for celebration. The best songs, like "Wembley" and "Everything Falls Apart on Me," boast choruses that spring free from the verses with a delirious release of soaring harmonies. --Geoffrey Himes

Just by listening to the samples shows promise for this band. They're great! Candyskins rock! - cool band name by the way!

5 out of 5 stars An Unknown Treasure.......2006-02-05

Candy Skins were unfortunately lost in the "alternative" sea of Nirvana, Smashing Pumpkins, Pearl Jam, and others. Seriously, this is a great album from start to finish. Worth every cent, even if you find it for just one, lol. Very catchy tunes, well produced brit-pop band that is still fresh some 13 years later.

5 out of 5 stars I don't get tired of listening to this........2003-02-28

I bought this cd for 34 cents at a used CD store and was very pleasantly surprised at it... Definately the best deal ever on a CD. All the songs have the slightly rough but very pleasant smooth punk sound I enjoy... All the songs are great, but so far the best two are 2. Fun and 3. House on the Top of the Hill. The Candy Skins are reminscent of Better Than Ezra, except a lot more pessimistic and with a light dash of the Foo Fighters. Actually they're not really like Better Than Ezra. In short, anyone who enjoys the attitude of punk but doesn't -require- that it be loud and grinding will enjoy this CD. It's just... music! Good music!
