As the voice behind such frothy oldies as "Runaround Sue," "The Wanderer," and "Ruby Baby," Dion doesn't spring to mind when one thinks of great blues interpreters. But this stripped-down session--the singer accompanies himself on acoustic guitar with just a hint of percussion--shows the former teen idol to be a convincing and affecting folk-bluesman. While nobody will confuse Bronx in Blue with Son House, Dion is in exceptional form, as he interprets about a dozen classics and contributes a newly written song. Even attempting to cover such crusty, trusty warhorses as "Crossroads" (one of four Robert Johnson tracks here), Howlin' Wolf's "How Many More Years?," and Jimmy Reed's "Baby What You Want Me to Do" is a daring move, but Dion succeeds due to his sense of integrity, obvious love for the genre, and an enthusiasm that leaps from the speakers. His voice is clear and emotional, his guitar playing frisky yet surprisingly accomplished--and the sheer joy Dion conveys on tracks like Hank Williams Sr.'s "Honky Tonk Blues" is contagious. The exceptional recording quality brings an immediacy and intensity to the performance, making Bronx in Blue a revelation for both oldies lovers and roots blues fans. --Hal HorowitzAlbum Description
Bronx In Blue is an all-acoustic blues outing highlighting the music that first inspired Dion as a child growing up in the Bronx. With songs by Robert Johnson, Willie Dixon, Jimmy Rogers, Hank Williams, Lightnin' Hopkins and Jimmy Reed, the collection is a soulful tour de force for Dion, not only in his familiar role as a magnificently interpretive vocalist but, also, as a brilliantly innovative guitarist.Dion notes, "When I was a kid, there was no Rock & Roll. In the early 50's - late at night, I'd tune into Wheeling, West Virginia (WWVA), listening to the Blues - Howlin' Wolf's `How Many More Years,' Jimmy Reed's `Bright Lights, Big City.' After school, I'd run home to catch the last half hour of the `Don Larkin Country Show' coming out of Newark. I was a Hank Williams junkie; for me, putting country and blues together - that's what I call Rock & Roll."
Previewing the album in MOJO, Paul Déchamé writes, "Recalling the back-to-basics approach of Cash's American recordings - muted drums, acoustic guitars - it's a little like having Dion in your front room strumming his favourite blues songs." Don McCleese, in No Depression, sums up Bronx In Blue thusly: "It all sounds like Dion. It all sounds great."

Pleasant Surprise!.......2007-06-13
This album exceeded my expectations. All of his renditions of blues music are uncluttered without excessive instrumentation - Just acoustic guitar and his great voice! I am also impressed that he is one of the few artists who understand the close connection between country music and blues. He says he knew 70 Hank Williams songs as a teenager and his version of Honky Tonk Blues is one of the best I have heard.
I can highly recommend this album!

Unfortunately, most people consider Dion to be an "oldies act". The man is an incredible talent, just as relevant in 2007, as he was in 1957.
The only reason that I did not rate this effort 5 stars is the programmed drum tracks. If Dion would have just stomped his foot, I would have rated it a 10!!

The four Scroggins sisters (Renee, Deborah, Valerie, and Marie) and neighbor Tito Libran burst on to the music scene from left field in 1981 with the remarkable success of "UFO" and "Moody" off their debut 12-inch record. Thanks to the ascendance of hip-hop, the South Bronx was very much on the musical map at the time. But ESG's minimalist funk, which featured live instruments, was closer in spirit to what was coming out of the U.K. at the time--PiL, Gang of Four, and the Factory label (which released ESG's first three songs). Their approach also had kinship to New York bands Konk, Bush Tetras, and Liquid Liquid (the latter two would become their label-mates on the semi-legendary 99 Records). "Moody" entered permanent rotation at New York dance clubs such as the Paradise Garage, while "UFO" became a hip-hop building block, used as sample material for at least a dozen other records (and still counting). The appeal of the tracks lay in the taut interaction between Deborah and Valerie's bass and drums, abetted by Marie and Tito's congas as well as Renee's sparse but precise guitar and unadorned vocal style. The stripped-down nature of the sound lent itself to hip-hop producers' layering on top of it and has helped the music successfully weather the intervening decades--there's none of that "What were they thinking with that synthesizer sound?" problem that afflicts some early '80s music. The CD includes much of their 99 Records output and tracks from their self-titled 1991 release on the Pow Wow label. The 99 Records label itself went down in legal flames, and that Renee Scroggins' apparently owns the rights to the music is noteworthy in itself. But the historical significance and sheer listenability of the music make this a most welcome reissue. --Bob BannisterAlbum Description

Where's the pfunk?.......2005-06-02
As others mentioned, they are analogous to the other groups that get lumped into the funk punk genre (the aforementioned artists), however they do still sound distinct from the others in the genre. The lead vocalist sounds very similar to Neneh Cherry. Hopefully they will still record with current resurgence in popularity of the early 80s genres. This release sounds very good, it sounds like it was mastered from original tapes. The liner notes give some helpful info on the group itself, however more detailed info on the individual tracks (including a track listing), like what the original releases were, would have been helpful.

A triumph of pure innocence.......2004-01-27
Though I have always been repelled by punk's thuggishness, "A South Bronx Story" was the fruit not of thuggishness, but of pure childlike innocence that I had never heard before. The rhythms were indeed rather uncalculated but never noisy, and the vocals of Renee and her sisters possessed a beauty that can only come out of simplicity, as well as a romantic feeling that was could seemingly see both sides ("up, high, down low" being typical) rather than being sentimental.
The songs themselves are distinctly minimalist, chiefly relying on basslines and percussion, but the occasional guitar line is most distinctive because it is so untrained, notably on the famous "UFO", which really does need to be heard in its proper setting rather than as a sample. The dramatic, if not fiery, "Moody" is bound to give any listener an upbeat feeling with its almost real-life description of a girl looking for a lover: Renee never feels guilty of what she wants to say, she just says it. The same feeling permeates all of the first ten songs on the record, with the other highlight being the distinctive beat/minibeat rhythm of "Tiny Sticks" that yet again shows the way thuggishness is so opposed to expression. "My Love For You" might be purely a dance number, but never has something this accessible sound so charming, yet the voices of the Scroggins sisters seem able to bounce back and forward effortlessly and without strain. Even on more conventional numbers in the latter half of the record, like the funk-rock "Erase You" and "Get Funky," ESG failed to lose their trademark na?vete.
Like later trip-hop groups, ESG showed how beautiful simple rhythms can be for listening pleasure. This was not really something to dance to; it was music that shows the beauty of innocent simplicity. The pictures of the Scroggins sisters on the back cover are really charming and should be seen.
Post Funk Pleasure.......2003-11-04
Post funk consists of funky melodic bass lines, spare vocals, and African or Latin percussion usually filtered through digital delay equipment for an atmospheric slightly creepy feel. Unlike the funk music of the seventies, the guitar sound is thin and it's kept in the background.
Even though post funk music had its heyday in the New York City of twenty years ago, it is still heavily sampled by hip-hop artists. "UFO," an ESG track produced by the infamous Martin Hannett, remains an especially popular choice.
ESG's skeletal grooves may sound hollow to fans of either top forty dance music or classic motor city funk. But every song on this CD is fabulous for both dancing and listening. Overall, it doesn't sound nearly as dated as more mainstream eighties stuff, which makes "A South Bronx Story" a timeless treat for the college/indie crowd.

Three great songs within an uneven album........2006-10-05
A good percentage of their music mixed Italian musicians with American ones and this album is one of the many examples. Three of the songs on this album deserve mention: The top ten R&b hit "On The Beat" opens up this cd and it's quite the shaker. It's perfect for that old school house party. "Time For Love", though slower, is more sophisticated and dreamy, with a great instrumental break.
Then there's my favourite song on this album, the beautifully played "Starlette." With it's speedy staccato vocals and latin-tinged percussion section, you get to find out just how amazingly talented these musicians truly are. It's a breathtaking track.
One very interesting fact I recently found out about "Starlette" is that the song was originally intended to be included on Change's debut album "The Glow Of Love" the previous year.

A trip back to the Salsa 70's.......2006-07-02
The arrangements, in particular, are excellent. They contain many quotes from vintage pieces, such as Puente's Ran Kan Kan in the first track. They reflect a command of the Salsa musical dialect, including the use of rhythm changes to keep the interest flowing as well as the insertion of Latin percussion solos where the music "demands" it. (Strangely, the liner notes indicate that these solos were overdubbed (?!))
In certain respects, I prefer it to Jimmy Bosch's most recent CD (El Avión de la Salsa) because it's less refined and has more of an extemporaneous feel to it in contrast to the more tightly arranged Bosch output.
This is my first Gorbea CD. I will likely now gobble up the rest of his output as I have with Jimmy Bosch.
modernized mambo style salsa with good flavor.......2005-06-22

Solid Sophomore Effort.......2006-09-22
Reading some of the reviews below, you'd think this album is a radical departure from the first one, which is a stone cold classic. Relax, Bronx fans -- it isn't anywhere near the change of direction some would have you believe and in fact treads very much the same musical ground for the most part. I held back on picking this up based on these errant opinions until I caught the video for "History's Stranglers" on Kerrang! TV here in the UK, and I immediately knew The Bronx were back and ordered this sucker the next day. It doesn't disappoint.
Sure, it isn't as good as the first one -- but only because that album set an impossibly high standard. It's always the same trying to follow up a classic first album -- how can the next one come close? Think Van Halen and G'n'R among countless others. Even Black Flag, the band The Bronx most closely resemble, couldn't follow up the epic "Damaged" with anything nearly as good.
And sure, there are 3 songs on this album which are departures from the band's established sound, namely "Dirty Leaves," "Safe Passage," and "White Guilt." The first 2 don't really work for me but I don't begrudge the band for trying to mix things up a bit. The last one has an almost southern rock feel with some Stonesy licks courtesy of the guesting Gilby Clarke and I love it -- great, catchy rock'n'roll.
As for the rest, for those who think The Bronx are going soft, "Small Stone" is the thrashiest thing they've ever done. And "Sh**ty Future," "History's Stranglers," "Oceans of Class," and "Transsexual Blackout (The Movement)" rock as hard as anything the band has done, even if a few of these songs take the pedal slightly off the metal of the relentlessly breakneck pace of the first album. "Mouth Money," "Rare Zombie," and "Three Dead Sisters" are no less interesting. "Around the Horn" goes for a different guitar tone for a change -- nothing wrong with that.
All in all, this is a very good album and Bronx fans needn't fear the scaremongering "sell out" charges thrown around by some of evidently questionable judgment.
Good, but Doesn't Seem to Have the Punch and Punk Feel I Expected.......2006-09-04

A Nelson Eddy Tour de Force: Magnificence here on earth.......2006-03-17
Nelson Eddy has never sounded better, aided (1994) by more modern recording techniques, the quality here (even with a disclaimer) is beyond belief. He has got to be one of the premier baritones of all time. Singing Popular tunes adapted from classical themes, he may be without peer. I have a CD of the young Sinatra singing "Full Moon and Empty Arms" to Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 2. He is not in the same universe with Eddy, whose crisp diction, timbre, fullness, perfect pitch, and passion ~ YES! PASSION! ~ must be heard (hopefully on on quality audio) to be fully appreciated. This is AWESOME. Maybe the best it gets here on earth. This is a wholly magnificent CD if you appreciate really good music, a fantastic baritone, and have a romantic bone in your body. I am astounded. Until today, I had no idea that Nelson Eddy was this good. This CD proves he was.

BLUES ALBUM OF THE YEAR !!!!!! "NO DOUBT ABOUT IT".......2007-02-13
He's still around and still the main man.......2006-09-22
He would always have been one of my musical heroes for that alone, but to add the quality of material and the superb musicianship of his bands to the mix gives you an unbeatable combination.
The songs on this wonderful record are amongst the best written by the early blues men, and the quality is maintained even when Dion tweaks the old lyrics or nuances the vocal emphases. And his guitar playing is definitely a revelation.
I can only go along with nearly all the earlier reviews. This is an outstanding CD and a Grammy award would normmally be a shoe-in if his name was in the forefront of the current music business. You must have this CD in your collection.
Dion SWINGS the Blues, ....move over Eric Clapton.......2006-05-13
Dion! Dion Dimucci, lead singer of the fifties doowop group Dion and the Belmonts. Singer of teen love song full of angst and later the classics "The Wanderer", "Ruby Baby" and "Runaround Sue" and later "Abraham, Martin and John".
What a great album this is! Dion and drums only. But doing (mostly) black pre-fifties blues?
He has a great voice and this is a great recording! The originals of these Blues Classics by the original singers ('20's thru 50's) are a wonder in themselves, but were invariably muddy, murky and poorly recorded, because of the time when they were waxed. And if he doesn't sound like Son House, or Robert Johnson, well, he does sound like Dion and he performs them well!
There is energy here. He plays all with infectious, rolling, swinging tempos (like he used in "Ruby Baby" or "The Wanderer"). It was done in 2 days so it DOESN'T sounds stale and canned like last years over-hyped, but disappointing, boring "Me and Mr Johnson" by blues legend Eric Clapton. (An album similar in general concept, which left me cold).
Minimalist - Dion, singing vocals, accompanying hisself with his old ringing acoustic Martin 000c guitar and his old 021 (from the sixties). Sounds like he has been playing these songs for a long time, just for fun.
The songs are amazingly consistant high quality, not a bad cut on the album, each track is better than the one before! If you like Eric Clapton, or if you like old Blues, you will love this album.
who'd a thunk it?
Highly recommended, one of the best albums of the year! Dion really deserves 5 stars on in my ultra tough grading system!
