As the voice behind such frothy oldies as "Runaround Sue," "The Wanderer," and "Ruby Baby," Dion doesn't spring to mind when one thinks of great blues interpreters. But this stripped-down session--the singer accompanies himself on acoustic guitar with just a hint of percussion--shows the former teen idol to be a convincing and affecting folk-bluesman. While nobody will confuse Bronx in Blue with Son House, Dion is in exceptional form, as he interprets about a dozen classics and contributes a newly written song. Even attempting to cover such crusty, trusty warhorses as "Crossroads" (one of four Robert Johnson tracks here), Howlin' Wolf's "How Many More Years?," and Jimmy Reed's "Baby What You Want Me to Do" is a daring move, but Dion succeeds due to his sense of integrity, obvious love for the genre, and an enthusiasm that leaps from the speakers.

His voice is clear and emotional, his guitar playing frisky yet surprisingly accomplished--and the sheer joy Dion conveys on tracks like Hank Williams Sr.'s "Honky Tonk Blues" is contagious. The exceptional recording quality brings an immediacy and intensity to the performance, making Bronx in Blue a revelation for both oldies lovers and roots blues fans. --Hal Horowitz

Album Description

Bronx In Blue is an all-acoustic blues outing highlighting the music that first inspired Dion as a child growing up in the Bronx. With songs by Robert Johnson, Willie Dixon, Jimmy Rogers, Hank Williams, Lightnin' Hopkins and Jimmy Reed, the collection is a soulful tour de force for Dion, not only in his familiar role as a magnificently interpretive vocalist but, also, as a brilliantly innovative guitarist.

Dion notes, "When I was a kid, there was no Rock & Roll. In the early 50's - late at night, I'd tune into Wheeling, West Virginia (WWVA), listening to the Blues - Howlin' Wolf's `How Many More Years,' Jimmy Reed's `Bright Lights, Big City.' After school, I'd run home to catch the last half hour of the `Don Larkin Country Show' coming out of Newark. I was a Hank Williams junkie; for me, putting country and blues together - that's what I call Rock & Roll."

Previewing the album in MOJO, Paul Déchamé writes, "Recalling the back-to-basics approach of Cash's American recordings - muted drums, acoustic guitars - it's a little like having Dion in your front room strumming his favourite blues songs." Don McCleese, in No Depression, sums up Bronx In Blue thusly: "It all sounds like Dion. It all sounds great."

5 out of 5 stars Pleasant Surprise!.......2007-06-13

I have always been a big Dion fan - from his hits of the 50s through "Abrahm, Martin and John" as well as his Christian/Gospel songs.
This album exceeded my expectations. All of his renditions of blues music are uncluttered without excessive instrumentation - Just acoustic guitar and his great voice! I am also impressed that he is one of the few artists who understand the close connection between country music and blues. He says he knew 70 Hank Williams songs as a teenager and his version of Honky Tonk Blues is one of the best I have heard.
I can highly recommend this album!

5 out of 5 stars A really great blues CD.......2007-05-30

This stripped down treatment by a master singer is truly a work of art. The musicians who originally wrote these songs would be proud of the manner in which they were recorded.

4 out of 5 stars He used to be a Brooklyn Dodger.......2007-05-12

Dion has made a series of outstanding albums dating back to the 70's (check out Return of the Wanderer, & King of the New York Streets).
Unfortunately, most people consider Dion to be an "oldies act". The man is an incredible talent, just as relevant in 2007, as he was in 1957.
The only reason that I did not rate this effort 5 stars is the programmed drum tracks. If Dion would have just stomped his foot, I would have rated it a 10!!

5 out of 5 stars Dion- "Bronx In Blue".......2007-03-16

This is classic Dion, outstanding. Great acoustic guitar and the recognizable vocals of Dion. All but two songs are blues covers of standards, but in Dion's inimitable style. Dion's two originals are also excellent. This CD will go down with his best works.

5 out of 5 stars wow.......2007-03-01

What an album. Even if this guy had just appeared out of the blue, he'd have made a superb contribution. I'm a resident of Belmont in the Bronx, and for that reason and about a million others I really, really, really hope that Dion goes on tour with this wonderful acoustic blues and offers us more material like this.

If you're the type of person that is into mob movies, then this is one of the best picks. I've never seen a mobster movie so great from start to end. With an end so touching and bittersweet, this is absolutley a masterpiece. YOU MUST SEE THIS TO BELIEVE IT!!

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic!.......2005-04-19

A fantastic cornucopia of musical genres! Motown, Doo Wop and a few standards! When this music was originally released, I wasn't born or was very young..so I thank the movie for this soundtrack for introducing me to some great music! I can listen to "I Only Have Eyes For You" a zillion times and never tire of it..and if that wasn't enough, this soundtracks also contains great songs by the likes of: Jerry Butler, The Moody Blues, Jimi Hendrix, James Brown, The Impressions, Donald Byrd and even Dean Martin! It's a great mix of genres..and I simply love it. Had I not loved the movie so much and felt all the music was fitting, I would never have discovered this great music! You won't be disappointed...absolutely wonderful!

5 out of 5 stars A Primo Collection.......2004-04-20

One of the greatest soundtracks ever. The mixture of music on this one works so well together from such great artists as Dean Martin, Della Reese to James Brown and The Jimi Hendrix Experience to name a few. You can play this CD anywhere at anytime and never get tired of hearing such old classics that are timeless and put together in an order that play with your emotions from beginning to end.
One question though, How many soundtracks does "Nights In White Satin" appear in, anyway????!!!!

The four Scroggins sisters (Renee, Deborah, Valerie, and Marie) and neighbor Tito Libran burst on to the music scene from left field in 1981 with the remarkable success of "UFO" and "Moody" off their debut 12-inch record. Thanks to the ascendance of hip-hop, the South Bronx was very much on the musical map at the time. But ESG's minimalist funk, which featured live instruments, was closer in spirit to what was coming out of the U.K. at the time--PiL, Gang of Four, and the Factory label (which released ESG's first three songs). Their approach also had kinship to New York bands Konk, Bush Tetras, and Liquid Liquid (the latter two would become their label-mates on the semi-legendary 99 Records). "Moody" entered permanent rotation at New York dance clubs such as the Paradise Garage, while "UFO" became a hip-hop building block, used as sample material for at least a dozen other records (and still counting). The appeal of the tracks lay in the taut interaction between Deborah and Valerie's bass and drums, abetted by Marie and Tito's congas as well as Renee's sparse but precise guitar and unadorned vocal style. The stripped-down nature of the sound lent itself to hip-hop producers' layering on top of it and has helped the music successfully weather the intervening decades--there's none of that "What were they thinking with that synthesizer sound?" problem that afflicts some early '80s music. The CD includes much of their 99 Records output and tracks from their self-titled 1991 release on the Pow Wow label. The 99 Records label itself went down in legal flames, and that Renee Scroggins' apparently owns the rights to the music is noteworthy in itself. But the historical significance and sheer listenability of the music make this a most welcome reissue. --Bob Bannister

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Wow! .......2005-12-27

So I just listened to this record and all I can say is WOW. This album is SO much fun. The best way I can compare this record to other stuff out there / music genres (because it's so different than a lot of stuff out there) is to say that ESG is doing a 60's Motown record in the time when rap and funk were emerging in America as valid and popular forms of music. That means you've got great little yelps and backing vocals from the lead vocalist's sisters a la The Supremes, while a strong bass line rocks in the background. This is DEFINITELY something to buy. Great for dancing or for just bringing the energy level up in the room. So glad I discovered them...!

5 out of 5 stars Where's the pfunk?.......2005-06-02

I started collecting music in the disco era & moved into punk & new wave as a teen. I was quite into Gang of Four, New Order, PiL, Paul Haig, The Slits. I was also into the early minimalist rap (Doug E Fresh, Beastie Boys' "Cookie Puss", Strafe/Harlequin 4's "Set it off"). I also got to see The Bush Tetras in concert in my hometown (Allentown, PA). However, this group completely passed me by. Never heard them in a club, nor on college radio, until around 1990 when I heard a more current (house) version of "Moody". So it was quite a surprise, when I finally bought this, to hear how consistently good the tracks here are. My only disappointment is that they didn't record more over the years.

As others mentioned, they are analogous to the other groups that get lumped into the funk punk genre (the aforementioned artists), however they do still sound distinct from the others in the genre. The lead vocalist sounds very similar to Neneh Cherry. Hopefully they will still record with current resurgence in popularity of the early 80s genres. This release sounds very good, it sounds like it was mastered from original tapes. The liner notes give some helpful info on the group itself, however more detailed info on the individual tracks (including a track listing), like what the original releases were, would have been helpful.

5 out of 5 stars essential recording.......2005-04-08

It's hard to believe that this band is only recently getting the attention they deserve. The material on this CD places the listener at the very start of current musical genres: hip hop, dance, alternative, punk funk, etc. Martin Hannet's presence as ESG's first producers make the importance of ESG in the development of such 'important' bands as New Order, Gang of Four, etc. VERY clear. If you are a DJ, either on college radio or doing parties and weddings, you will ALWAYS get a strong reaction from listeners and dancers when you slap this baby on! Plus, these sisters deserve your financial support -- they were sampled like crazy in the early days of hip hop, and so haven't received the royalties they deserve!

5 out of 5 stars A triumph of pure innocence.......2004-01-27

Having caught the attention of this from reading a Pitchfork review, I though about checking this out on amazon.com for some time, given that it is the only ESG remaining available.

Though I have always been repelled by punk's thuggishness, "A South Bronx Story" was the fruit not of thuggishness, but of pure childlike innocence that I had never heard before. The rhythms were indeed rather uncalculated but never noisy, and the vocals of Renee and her sisters possessed a beauty that can only come out of simplicity, as well as a romantic feeling that was could seemingly see both sides ("up, high, down low" being typical) rather than being sentimental.

The songs themselves are distinctly minimalist, chiefly relying on basslines and percussion, but the occasional guitar line is most distinctive because it is so untrained, notably on the famous "UFO", which really does need to be heard in its proper setting rather than as a sample. The dramatic, if not fiery, "Moody" is bound to give any listener an upbeat feeling with its almost real-life description of a girl looking for a lover: Renee never feels guilty of what she wants to say, she just says it. The same feeling permeates all of the first ten songs on the record, with the other highlight being the distinctive beat/minibeat rhythm of "Tiny Sticks" that yet again shows the way thuggishness is so opposed to expression. "My Love For You" might be purely a dance number, but never has something this accessible sound so charming, yet the voices of the Scroggins sisters seem able to bounce back and forward effortlessly and without strain. Even on more conventional numbers in the latter half of the record, like the funk-rock "Erase You" and "Get Funky," ESG failed to lose their trademark na?vete.

Like later trip-hop groups, ESG showed how beautiful simple rhythms can be for listening pleasure. This was not really something to dance to; it was music that shows the beauty of innocent simplicity. The pictures of the Scroggins sisters on the back cover are really charming and should be seen.

5 out of 5 stars Post Funk Pleasure.......2003-11-04

I think this minimalistic dance music fits into an early-eighties genre that is distinct from post punk and new wave. I call it "post funk" and I'd also include, among others, Bush Tetras, Liquid Liquid, Quando Quango, and Factory-era A Certain Ratio in this category.

Post funk consists of funky melodic bass lines, spare vocals, and African or Latin percussion usually filtered through digital delay equipment for an atmospheric slightly creepy feel. Unlike the funk music of the seventies, the guitar sound is thin and it's kept in the background.

Even though post funk music had its heyday in the New York City of twenty years ago, it is still heavily sampled by hip-hop artists. "UFO," an ESG track produced by the infamous Martin Hannett, remains an especially popular choice.

ESG's skeletal grooves may sound hollow to fans of either top forty dance music or classic motor city funk. But every song on this CD is fabulous for both dancing and listening. Overall, it doesn't sound nearly as dated as more mainstream eighties stuff, which makes "A South Bronx Story" a timeless treat for the college/indie crowd.

4 out of 5 stars Three great songs within an uneven album........2006-10-05

This album (which was originally released in 1981, not 1983 as it incorrectly states in Product Information) is a mixed bag of sleek R&B/Dance music from the talented musicians mostly responsible for albums from Change ("A Lover's Holiday"), High Fashion ("Feeling Lucky Lately"), Revanche ("1979, It's Dancing Time"), Macho ("I'm A Man") and others.
A good percentage of their music mixed Italian musicians with American ones and this album is one of the many examples. Three of the songs on this album deserve mention: The top ten R&b hit "On The Beat" opens up this cd and it's quite the shaker. It's perfect for that old school house party. "Time For Love", though slower, is more sophisticated and dreamy, with a great instrumental break.
Then there's my favourite song on this album, the beautifully played "Starlette." With it's speedy staccato vocals and latin-tinged percussion section, you get to find out just how amazingly talented these musicians truly are. It's a breathtaking track.
One very interesting fact I recently found out about "Starlette" is that the song was originally intended to be included on Change's debut album "The Glow Of Love" the previous year.

5 out of 5 stars BB&Q BAND.......2006-08-26

One of the best albums to come out of the 1980's circa...BB&Q Band displayed a sound remeniscent of CHIC but on a somewhat differant level. I't's been said that the BB&Q Band actually replaced bands like Chic after Disco was given it's death sentence in the early to mid eighties. Musically and harmonically the band was at it's best and filled up the dance floors with their number one hit..."On The Beat". All the tracks are great, but I must admit my favorite track is "Time For Love". Something about the way the chorus complements the rhythm that puts everything in sink....great record. The slow jams are very good as well. Amust have for any collector....I highly recommend this purchase. Navaar Onaje

5 out of 5 stars About bloody time!!!.......2005-10-09

I have been waiting forever for this to come out in CD format. This Band was rockin in the clubs back in the day. My favourite was "Time for Love" even though the cut "On the Beat" was more popular. Buy this...its well worth the wait...believe that.

Great album!! Bonus to hear some of the special vocals by the late; great Luther Vandross. Fantastic!! A long with the albums from Change the music , for me, is the sound of the 80's dance scene. I'm buying the others if available. You should too. You won't be disappointed.

4 out of 5 stars A trip back to the Salsa 70's.......2006-07-02

It's generally agreed that "Salsa" today rarely measures up to that from the great pre-80's era. Although this CD isn't quite in the same league as the Fania All-Stars, Eddie Palmieri, Ray Barreto, Willie Colon et al, it does capture much of the feel of the NY Latin sound of the 60's and 70's. (Later Edit: After living with this CD for awhile, I've changed my mind and upgraded it to being well within this league.)

The arrangements, in particular, are excellent. They contain many quotes from vintage pieces, such as Puente's Ran Kan Kan in the first track. They reflect a command of the Salsa musical dialect, including the use of rhythm changes to keep the interest flowing as well as the insertion of Latin percussion solos where the music "demands" it. (Strangely, the liner notes indicate that these solos were overdubbed (?!))

In certain respects, I prefer it to Jimmy Bosch's most recent CD (El Avión de la Salsa) because it's less refined and has more of an extemporaneous feel to it in contrast to the more tightly arranged Bosch output.

This is my first Gorbea CD. I will likely now gobble up the rest of his output as I have with Jimmy Bosch.

4 out of 5 stars modernized mambo style salsa with good flavor.......2005-06-22

5 out of 5 stars High Level of Musical Sophistication.......2004-05-15

If you love salsa rythm with more musical sophistication and jazz orientation that the average salsa you hear in clubs, this CD is for you. Frankly I can't believe my ears. They sound like they're Cuban, which is the highest compliment I can give.

5 out of 5 stars Metal? Hardcore? L.A. Groove? Those and more.......2007-04-20

Do you yearn for the music of yesteryear but desire a modern update? The Bronx is here for you. The lyrics are biting, funny, and even subtle sometimes; the music anything but. Guitarists swing between punk rock and surf riffs while the vocals grind over Deftones-esque percussion. The result is a CD worthy of a club or a house party.

3 out of 5 stars Starts strong - ends weak.......2007-01-04

The Bronx are a really good band. And live they are fun to watch. Their songs are strong and full of energy. But they can't sustain it, and this album, like their first, has some really good stuff in the beginning, but peters out at the end. Maybe they just need to place the songs around a bit differently. I'll still go see 'em live.

5 out of 5 stars This is great... no discussion!.......2006-10-03

This is just pure rock & roll, the way it was meant to be! It's pissed off, loud, crazy music to rock out to that actually manages to come across as clever. Seriously, if you can't listen to this album and tell how well written it is, just go back to your Hawthorne Heights CDs and leave the real music to the big kids. Unlike their previous album and eps, this release finds The Bronx experimenting ever so slightly with different rythms and moods. Where as the band's other material is stuck in fifth gear most of the time (not necessarily a bad thing), their newer songs manage to down-shift to fourth gear every once in while. If that's selling out, then give me a thousand sell-out bands like this. Listening to this album really makes you realize how watered down most rock and roll has become in recent years. That's pretty intense considering the number of people who think this is a watered down effort from The Bronx! This band deserves your attention, so do yourself a favor and buy this album today!

Oh and for those who can't get enough of The Bronx, you should pick up the Vinyl and I-Tunes editions of the album, because they both feature two bonus tracks (Rockers NYC and Venice)!

4 out of 5 stars Solid Sophomore Effort.......2006-09-22

Boy oh boy. Some reviews are helpful and others are downright misleading. To think I was almost put off Tool's "10,000 Days" by some luke warm reviews here. Of course, it's another masterpiece from that incredible band. Ditto The Bronx's second full-length album.

Reading some of the reviews below, you'd think this album is a radical departure from the first one, which is a stone cold classic. Relax, Bronx fans -- it isn't anywhere near the change of direction some would have you believe and in fact treads very much the same musical ground for the most part. I held back on picking this up based on these errant opinions until I caught the video for "History's Stranglers" on Kerrang! TV here in the UK, and I immediately knew The Bronx were back and ordered this sucker the next day. It doesn't disappoint.

Sure, it isn't as good as the first one -- but only because that album set an impossibly high standard. It's always the same trying to follow up a classic first album -- how can the next one come close? Think Van Halen and G'n'R among countless others. Even Black Flag, the band The Bronx most closely resemble, couldn't follow up the epic "Damaged" with anything nearly as good.

And sure, there are 3 songs on this album which are departures from the band's established sound, namely "Dirty Leaves," "Safe Passage," and "White Guilt." The first 2 don't really work for me but I don't begrudge the band for trying to mix things up a bit. The last one has an almost southern rock feel with some Stonesy licks courtesy of the guesting Gilby Clarke and I love it -- great, catchy rock'n'roll.

As for the rest, for those who think The Bronx are going soft, "Small Stone" is the thrashiest thing they've ever done. And "Sh**ty Future," "History's Stranglers," "Oceans of Class," and "Transsexual Blackout (The Movement)" rock as hard as anything the band has done, even if a few of these songs take the pedal slightly off the metal of the relentlessly breakneck pace of the first album. "Mouth Money," "Rare Zombie," and "Three Dead Sisters" are no less interesting. "Around the Horn" goes for a different guitar tone for a change -- nothing wrong with that.

All in all, this is a very good album and Bronx fans needn't fear the scaremongering "sell out" charges thrown around by some of evidently questionable judgment.

4 out of 5 stars Good, but Doesn't Seem to Have the Punch and Punk Feel I Expected.......2006-09-04

The Bronx is a Southern Californian punk rock band with street-wise lyrics, great guitar riffs and a tight rhythm section. "History's Stranglers grooves with strong bass vibe and angry lyrics. "Rape Zombie" opens with a fuzzy style guitar riff and rhythmic vocal which think is one of the best songs on the record. But, for some reason, this album doesn't seem to have the same all out punch and punk feel as their previous discs although you have to admit their range is on display here, showing that the band is not afraid to try something different.

5 out of 5 stars The Artistry of Nelson Eddy.......2006-11-04

Nelson Eddy's flawless singing and diction, with a modern orchestral accompaniment, make The Artistry of Nelson Eddy a romantic, sophisticated musical experience.

3 out of 5 stars Artistry of Nelson Eddy.......2006-08-22

Contemporary music which is sung well but voice not as expected of Nelson Eddy. The true baritone of his voice missing. This may be the recording but CD received in good condition.

5 out of 5 stars A Nelson Eddy Tour de Force: Magnificence here on earth.......2006-03-17

I have most of the movies of Nelson Eddy. Together with Jeanette MacDonald, this team produced some of the most romantic movie-operattas ever made. But the sound quality of those movies pale in comparison to the magnificence of this production.
Nelson Eddy has never sounded better, aided (1994) by more modern recording techniques, the quality here (even with a disclaimer) is beyond belief. He has got to be one of the premier baritones of all time. Singing Popular tunes adapted from classical themes, he may be without peer. I have a CD of the young Sinatra singing "Full Moon and Empty Arms" to Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 2. He is not in the same universe with Eddy, whose crisp diction, timbre, fullness, perfect pitch, and passion ~ YES! PASSION! ~ must be heard (hopefully on on quality audio) to be fully appreciated. This is AWESOME. Maybe the best it gets here on earth. This is a wholly magnificent CD if you appreciate really good music, a fantastic baritone, and have a romantic bone in your body. I am astounded. Until today, I had no idea that Nelson Eddy was this good. This CD proves he was.

4 out of 5 stars For those who are already fans of N.E. only........2003-12-22

Nelson Eddy made these recordings when he was about 60 years old and it shows. He retained an excellent voice for a very long time, allowing him to perform successfully until the day he died. However, this particular recording seems to emphasize vocal decline, in terms of control and range. The problem may be that the songs presented here are mostly VERY GREAT classical orchestral pieces, to which are sung pop lyrics. In my opinion, most (but not all) of the lyrics to these songs are not worthy of their music and are incongruous. The last number, "Alone Together", an excellent Schwartz/Dietz song (which seems out of place with Rachmaninov and Ravel,) is actually a duet with Nelson's partner, Gale Sherwood. It was recorded a couple of years later than the other songs on this album, and is given a bossa nova background that in this mix, practically drowns out the singers! As to the overall sound quality, there are some light snaps and pops as on a record, but the music is loud and clear. I do not mean to discourage Nelson Eddy fans from buying this album. I think you need this album. I own this album. Buy this album, and encourage the release of more albums and radio recordings by Nelson Eddy. What I do mean to say, is that "The Artistry of Nelson Eddy" is not the best introduction to the artistry of Nelson Eddy. His recordings from the 30's, 40's or even 50's are a better purchase for the beginner. Once you love Nelson Eddy, then pick up this album.

5 out of 5 stars A Surefire Way To Turn A Bad Day Into A Good One!.......2003-04-12

The music on this CD is so beautiful it brings tears to my eyes every time I listen to it. It proves that the music of Nelson Eddy is simply timeless. I have always loved his voice, but these arrangements bring out the very best of it. It is highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Scorching Hard Rock At Its Best!.......2006-07-31

I stumbled across this band by accident, but when I heard Heart Attack American for the first time I was blown away! These guys are loud, fast and tight - who cares if you can't understand what they're saying most of the time. If you love all things that ROCK you must own this album.

5 out of 5 stars M. Taylor has never seen The Bronx live........2006-07-19

He must have had a few too many beers that night 'cause I have seen the Bronx mutiple times, and never have I seen them wearing "designer punk clothes" or looking "glam." Are we even talking about the same band? Their usual look consists of t-shirt and jeans. WTF? Anyway, buy this album immediately, as well as the brand new one. They may be nothing new, but few bands around today play with as much energy, passion, and sense of humor as these guys.

5 out of 5 stars Who cares what record label they're on?.......2006-03-21

People are complaining that they're too glam and on a major label (OMG! A major?!?). Judging a band by the way they dress and the label they're on is lame. As cliche as this sounds, the music is what should be judged. I saw these guys live and I was convinced that they have whatever it is good bands have. They were loud, entertaining, and played an awesome show even though the crowd wasn't very large. The singer was jumping in and dancing with the teenagers and spouting drunken rants in-between songs. Everytime I listen to this cd it reminds me of the good times I had that night. Awesome band, awesome cd. Just kick back and rock out. Don't let the superficial stuff get in the way. Don't listen to the stuck-up hipsters that plague the scene.

5 out of 5 stars Holy Cr&p. These Guys Bring Hardcore Back.......2006-03-17

Now I have seen some reviews that say that the Bronx genre of music has been done before. Well.... yeah! It is hard to find a total original band anymore. Talk to any musician and they have influences and they will try to emulate what they like. Now for the Bronx. These guys do what alot of old hardcore bands did that have gone soft or over-produced. These guys simply go 1000 miles and hour with all the angst that the old HC bands did. Yeah I hear a large list of bands in these guys and I love it! No candy pop "radio friendly" punk here. Just good old HC. Yeah, they may look "glam" but, the command respect once they start playing. This is no Celebrity Skin or Janes Addiction. This is almost like the Freeze, Gangreen, Jerrys Kids, Minor Threat, 7 Seconds (without the ewwhhs and ahhhs) and as another said SNFU (old), Hot Snakes, Drive Like Jehu. I think you get the idea. If like Hardcore and remember what it used to be, you need this album!

1 out of 5 stars sorry to disagree, but..........2006-02-07

After seeing 'the Bronx' in New York I must say I have a hard time seeing them as anything other than socially retarded, image conscious, glam rock monkeys. They are not pioneers (except maybe in the same way that Elvis was a pioneer of marketing black American music as his own device). Look, all I'm trying to say is that anything valuable about this band can be found in a myriad of other sources in the genre, and along with it can come some integrity. Consider bands like SNFU, Refused, Dazzling Killmen, Hot Snakes, Shellac, Converge, and Lightning Bolt. These and many other bands can offer the same energy and aggression as `the Bronx' without all of the high fashion haircuts and expensive designer punk clothes. Besides, aren't they distributed by Island Records, the same label that put out Mariah Carey, Sum 41, Melissa Etheridge, and Bon Jovi? Very punk boys

The purchase of this CD was highly recommended by a fellow member of Yahoo's "Beautiful Instrumentals Group." Containing several formerly unavailable on CD selections, this album is pure instrumental magic! For example, some of you may recall Monte Kelly's mid-1950s rendition of "Tropicana," from the LP of the same name, and other songs from that collection. They are here at last! I have been waiting since CDs came out to see "Tropicana" and many other "magical instrumentals" from the US and Europe finally appear on CD, and this is the first in a series of new CDs produced by Nick Acquaviva to hit the market that feature these wonderful instrumentals. I highly recommend that anyone who loves classic instrumental check this and the entire series out. You will not be disappointed!

5 out of 5 stars Still a true idol! .......2007-06-16

This album should have received the Blues Album of the Year in February 2007! What a shame it didn't. Maybe his next one will. Can't wait to hear it all. I'm blessed because I get to hear him every week! And the next album coming out is even better than this one!@!!!!! This year he should win for sure as long as it gets released in time. Watch for Dion's next blues CD! Not only an awesome voice, but an awesome person! And he can play the guitar with the best of them. Don't miss it.

3 out of 5 stars BLUES ALBUM OF THE YEAR !!!!!! "NO DOUBT ABOUT IT".......2007-02-13

IN 1961 I PICKED UP A DION ALBUM "FROM A COUNTER TOP BECAUSE THERE WAS NOTHING ELSE TO DO", AND HAVE BEEN HOOKED EVER SINCE. THIS IS BEYOND A DOUBT THE BEST BLUES ALBUM OF THE YEAR. HOW THIS DID NOT WIN A GRAMMY IS BEYOND ME. WHERE ELSE CAN YOU HAVE THE HISTORY OF THE BLUES ON ONE CD AND HAVING THE "MAN FROM THE BRONX" PUTTING IT ALL TOGETHER BRONX STYLE? HIS VOICE IS STILL GREAT AND HIS ARTHUR AVE. ATTITUDE IS STILL THERE. "NO DOUBT ABOUT IT." EVERY SONG IS A KILLER: WHO DO YOU LOVE/CROSSROADS/ HONKEY TONK BLUES/BUILT FOR COMFORT. THIS IS A MUST FOR ANY COLLECTION. A WISE MAN ONCE STATED: "YOU CAN TAKE THE KID FROM THE BRONX, BUT YOU CAN"T TAKE THE BRONX FROM THE KID." GOD BLESS DION DIMUCCI - THE KING OF THE NEW YORK STREETS!!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars He's still around and still the main man.......2006-09-22

I've been slowly collecting all of the available Dion albums on CD as they have been re-issued either singly or as twofers. And on top of that have picked up all the most recent CD offerings. This is the best, but one thing stands out above all else and that is the versatility of this guy, who has recorded doo-wop, pop, rock, folk, gospel, jazzy-ish and, now, blues albums and in every case, his voice and vocal styling fits the musical genre.
He would always have been one of my musical heroes for that alone, but to add the quality of material and the superb musicianship of his bands to the mix gives you an unbeatable combination.
The songs on this wonderful record are amongst the best written by the early blues men, and the quality is maintained even when Dion tweaks the old lyrics or nuances the vocal emphases. And his guitar playing is definitely a revelation.
I can only go along with nearly all the earlier reviews. This is an outstanding CD and a Grammy award would normmally be a shoe-in if his name was in the forefront of the current music business. You must have this CD in your collection.

5 out of 5 stars Dion SWINGS the Blues, ....move over Eric Clapton.......2006-05-13

A standout hit, my best purchase for the last six months!

Dion! Dion Dimucci, lead singer of the fifties doowop group Dion and the Belmonts. Singer of teen love song full of angst and later the classics "The Wanderer", "Ruby Baby" and "Runaround Sue" and later "Abraham, Martin and John".

What a great album this is! Dion and drums only. But doing (mostly) black pre-fifties blues?

He has a great voice and this is a great recording! The originals of these Blues Classics by the original singers ('20's thru 50's) are a wonder in themselves, but were invariably muddy, murky and poorly recorded, because of the time when they were waxed. And if he doesn't sound like Son House, or Robert Johnson, well, he does sound like Dion and he performs them well!

There is energy here. He plays all with infectious, rolling, swinging tempos (like he used in "Ruby Baby" or "The Wanderer"). It was done in 2 days so it DOESN'T sounds stale and canned like last years over-hyped, but disappointing, boring "Me and Mr Johnson" by blues legend Eric Clapton. (An album similar in general concept, which left me cold).

Minimalist - Dion, singing vocals, accompanying hisself with his old ringing acoustic Martin 000c guitar and his old 021 (from the sixties). Sounds like he has been playing these songs for a long time, just for fun.

The songs are amazingly consistant high quality, not a bad cut on the album, each track is better than the one before! If you like Eric Clapton, or if you like old Blues, you will love this album.

who'd a thunk it?

Highly recommended, one of the best albums of the year! Dion really deserves 5 stars on in my ultra tough grading system!

5 out of 5 stars He Just Keeps on Keepin' On.......2006-05-07

I saw Dion a couple of years ago in San Diego. Here's a guy, 67 years old, who will just not fade away. His musical recordings have delved into several genres of music. He's truly an artist, in every sense of the word. He doesn't seem to care if his music reaches the charts or not, rather he is more interested in testing his abilities and sailing into uncharted waters. His life certainly has movie written all over it and Hollywood would be remiss if they didn't do a biopic on his life. This newest album is just another link in his fabulous musical career. It's the music he grew up with, along with country. Remember, there was no rock 'n roll when Dion was growing up, he helped invent it! I like this album!
