2 out of 5 stars I would have liked this more when I was 16.......2007-06-28

Let me start by saying that I am a big fan of experimental music of all kinds. I'm always ready and willing to dive into something which is unlike anything I've heard before. I'm also no stranger to Genesis P. Orridge's work, having heard all of Throbbing Gristle's albums, many Psychic TV albums, and having enjoyed his work with Pigface.

TG is a mixed bag for me. I appreciate the dynamic of the group and the balls it took to make and stand by the music when they did... but now it just seems trite. Only very occasionally did they manage to break through the gimmick of banging on things to make noise and create a piece of "musick" that affected me on anything more than a basic visceral level.

What I've heard of Psychic TV affects me the same way, only instead of making noise, they are writing the most obnoxiously meaningless imitations of pop songs imaginable. Whenever I'm reminded of them, I always wonder why so many people who are into underground type experimental music enjoy PTV so much. The only thing I can figure is that it's the corny pseudo-religious aspects of their philosophies. Whatever the case may be, it usually ends up sounding much like everything I've always hated about popular music, but done badly. The only exception is their album Trip/Reset, which I do still listen to on occasion. I really can't tell you why I enjoy that album and not the rest, but I think it has something to do with the consistency of mood throughout it. It's very mellow, and aptly named.

I bought this album anyway. I got it because of the quick sound samples I heard on Amazon. It sounded different from the things I hate about PTV, but some of it also reminded me of the things I liked about Trip/Reset. I thought it might be a new direction for the group.

Well.. it is a new direction for them. But unfortunately, hearing the songs in full turned out to be a tedious experience. The albums opener sounds like a dumbed down Johnny Rotten/PIL imitation. The second song was entirely forgettable. The third song sounded like a different version of the first. Maximum Swing, my favorite song off the album, starts out a little bit interesting, but quickly degenerates into an unbearably repetitive waste of bytes. The next two songs have a similar vibe as some of the tracks I liked off of Trip/Reset, but holy crap.. they just drone on and on with no point whatsoever. The rest of the album is entirely throwaway. Hookah Chalice and Just Because sound like retreads of tracks 1 and 5, and BB sounds like The Cult with an even more annoying and whiny singer. The last song is simply a joke. Sitar samples with stilted vocal drones. The song is 7 minutes long, but it sounds like it took less than a minute to "write".

Bottom line:

Most of these songs have some sort of potential, but they have no business being as long as they are, and Genesis sounds younger and more immature as he gets older.

On the other hand, this might be the "punkest" album I've heard in years. I guess I just grew out of the "punk" thing a long time ago.

If they would start focusing on actually writing music and stop trying so hard (and failing so hard) to be scary or edgy, they might be onto something. As it stands now, they are simply laughable to me.

5 out of 5 stars This is a great f-cking record!.......2007-06-23

wonders never cease! First I'll say that this is a cyber glam record, only it's very analogue, with a Ziggy Star Dust 2007 sound. I wouldn't have guessed a sound like this, a sound that I associate as an old rock sound, could sound so fresh, so right so now, i am of the avante guard variety when it comes to music, but some how this works! on glam pop rock estetics as well as pagan occultic modes of expression and also on the poetic museing level, there is no industrial sound here but definately a dose of psychedelic. I might also add that this is a great summer time record.

5 out of 5 stars This is a dynamic return!.......2007-06-12

This new incarnation of Psychic TV, or PTV3, sounds great. Gen's new band sounds powerful, and their grooves can make your body move without conceding to rock stereotypes. This album sacrifices none of PTV's experimental side, or their songwriting side. On most of their albums, you have some experimental songs, and some songs that are more in the classic style of songwriting. On this album, it's experimental pop songs or poppy experimental songs all the way through (and I mean pop like early Pink Floyd or The Stones, not in a demeaning way). The way the band rocks and grooves draws one in, while the structures and textures sound fresh, new, and challenging.
I love all of their albums, and every phase of their evolution, but I think this may be their best. If you haven't listened to PTV lately, you're in for a pleasant surprise. If you haven't heard them at all, this is a great place to start.

This cd was a genuine delight. The music, plus really good liner notes, was an education in itself. I knew little about this group of composer- arrangers and the time in which they lived. "Fat White Woman Whom Nobody Loves" may not have been meant as humorous, but it was anyway. This has got to be one of the KS'S all-time best.

5 out of 5 stars a voice teacher and early music fan.......2006-12-24

Thomas Campion (1567-1620) was a poet as well as a musician, and his songs definately reflect this ability, for they could just as well be read as sung. Philip Rosseter ( his friend) states that his 118 songs were "superfluous blossomes of his deeper Studies," no doubt referring to his Latin poetry , or perhaps medicine, which was his profession. What Campion did better than Dowland, or any other English composer of the day, was to "couple my words and notes lovingly together, which will be much for him to doe that hath not power over both." It is best to listen to them in order of priority to poem, melody and lastly singer. His melodies are simplistic and unadorned by shocking harmony designed to overpower the weight of the word itself. T.S. Eliot was in no doubt about Campion's quality:"except for Shakespeare, the most accomplished master of rhymed lyric of his time."
The performance of these songs by Drew Minter (countertenor) accompanied by Paul O'Dette (lute) is really quite outstanding. I must say that this disc is so much better than Minter's other disc of lute songs "Sweeter Than Roses". His voice had a much clearer tone quality and he did not get 'nasal' or 'edgy' as he is prone to do. He kept his voice light and distinct with very neat diction. When he goes for a loud full sound like Michael Chance or David Daniels his voice is not pleasant to hear. But this album is very good and his emotional investment into each song was excellent. Just a very good LISTEN!!!!

    3 out of 5 stars Serious Drawback.......2006-04-08

Elizabethan Songs. Twenty-two songs by Thomas Campion (1567 – 1620), performed by Drew Minter (countertenor) and Paul O’Dette (lute).
Recorded in November 1989 at Bethel United Church of Christ, Manchester, Michigan.
Harmonia Mundi. Originally issued as HMU 907023, now re-issued as part of the budget-price Classical Express series as HMCX 3957023. Total time: 58’23”.

Thomas Campion was a contemporary of both Shakespeare and Dowland and was a medical doctor who wrote poetry which he also set to music. Drew Minter performs twenty-two of these here with his inimitable coppery countertenor, a voice which is, in fact, very beautiful, but needs considerable getting used to if you are new to it. (Minter sings at alto pitch, but nobody would mistake him for a female!) He is accompanied by master lutenist Paul O’Dette, whose contribution remains fairly quietly in the background. The songs themselves are, of course, in Elizabethan English, making them rather difficult to understand. And this is where this CD suffers a serious drawback: the texts are not printed in the thin CD booklet; instead, there is a note saying that they can be downloaded from the internet, but when I tried to visit the site mentioned (on more than one occasion recently), the server was down, the address unknown. I nevertheless enjoyed listening, but without really knowing what Minter was singing so delightfully about. Campion’s melodies sound to my ear a little “samish”, and I occasionally found myself wishing that the program had been interrupted by a lute solo or two.

3 out of 5 stars Pleasant recital of Dowland contemporary.......2001-03-28

There is little overlap between this Campion CD and the similar recital featuring another American countertenor, Steven Rickards, on Naxos. However if forced to choose between the two note that the Naxos release includes sung texts, while this one from Classical Express does not. On the other hand O'Dette is a more characterful lute player.

4 out of 5 stars FMT Best Record To Date, Although Lost In The Sea Of Metalcore Stagnation.......2006-01-08

I've heard all four Fear My Thoughts albums (from their debut "23" up to this release) and it's been interesting to see how the band has evolved from a chaotic, noisecore outfit to the metalcore sound they embody now. However every evolution the band has gone through (most notably the jump they took between "Vitriol" and "The Great Collapse") has strengthened them in every way. To be honest I heard "The Great Collapse" and wasn't really impressed. It wasn't a bad record, but in some places it seemed like they were trying too hard, and in others not hard enough. It was also their first album to take on the swedish melodeath influence and transform into "metalcore". Whatever you want to label this cd as, be it metal, hardcore, melodic death, or metalcore is fairly unimportant, as the music should speak for itself. And on "Hell, Sweet Hell" it does.

First off the vocals have improved so much on this record. If this is your first Fear My Thoughts record, you really won't appreciate how much this band has stepped up their craft since their last outing. Listen to any of their earlier releases and you will understand why I believe this to be their best effort. Where on "The Great Collapse" the vocals came off sometimes cheesy, often sounding too much like the proto cookie-monster style (and the less than stellar production didn't help), "Hell, Sweet Hell" sees the vocals primarily going to route of a raging, throaty scream, occasionally mixing in some deep growling. Like I said you really have to listen to any of the band's previous releases to understand my appreciation for the improvement this band has undergone.

Musically, they taken heavy influence from swedish melodic death this time around, ala Killswitch Engage. Unfortunately though this guitar style is far from original or refreshing right now, which is ultimately why people are coming down so hard on these guys. While it's not necessarily ground breaking, the band's musicians show an apt ability for playing this style of music that has become fairly popular now. The excellent guitar riffery on "My Delight" (love the accenting background fill solo behind the bridge at around 2:07) and "Sadist Hour" is worthy of noting, as it stands side by side with the genre's heavyweights. The leads found in the title track and "Dying Eyes" are also extremely accomplished. The drumming is top notch, as with most metalcore, although nothing jaw dropping. It basically follows the formula, which is what most of the record does...

...And is ultimately is what detracts from Fear My Thoughts appeal. While they are talented musicians and great song writers, they just sound way too much like everything else. There's little distinction between them and most other bands in the same music scene. While they do add some interesting synths and electronic elements in places ("The Master's Call", "Windows For The Dead"), it's hardly enough to make them amazingly different from anything you've probably heard before. The addition of clean vocals this time around are also a major downfall. I like my fair share of melody in heavy music, but where Fear My Thoughts tries, it doesn't work well. Songs like the opener "Windows For The Dead" and track 3 "In The Hourglass" are rolling along fine until the melodic crooning starts. While it's far from being a whiny, high-pitched emo howl, the melody just doesn't fit with the band or it's sound. "Trying To Feel..." is ambitious, and especially in the musical department it is welcomed addition, but the vocals don't really do much to take the song to a higher level. There's no denying the band is at their absolute best on pieces like "My Delight" and "Sadist Hour" where they're not trying to throw out catchy choruses. There's also a significant lack of breakdowns as compared to other previous releases, furthering the comparison to metal, rather than their roots in hardcore.

Still "Hell, Sweet Hell" is definitely Fear My Thoughts most accomplished record. When reviewing I had to compare it to the band's earlier albums, which in turn makes this look like a masterpiece. Compared to the rest of today's metal and hardcore I'd say it's more of a 3 star, maybe 3.5 at the most, but in relation to their earliest recordings this definitely the band's opus (4 or 4.5). If you do listen to this record, I'd encourage you to also listen to anything previous you can get from the band ("The Great Collapse" is easy, "Vitriol" and "23" are harder to find) to see how much significant growth this band has taken. For that alone I give them credit, and that's why I like this record. It's best to listen to every once in a while, or hear live, because constant exposure will mostly likely lead to boredom. Overall not a bad record in the least, and undoubtably FMT's finest effort yet. Hopefully these guys can continue to grow and keep evolving, because they have tons of potential. As for now "Hell, Sweet Hell" will do.

5 out of 5 stars Fear this album..........2005-09-14

I understand this band was a metalcore album, and this is the only album I have by them. I will tell you right now that it is fantastic. It has heavy melodic death elements, hints of industrial metal, and some metalcore elements. But in general, this is a great melodic death album. Actually, many of the songs sound nothing like American music. You do not understand how many times I've listened to this album after getting it, which is rare because it either has to be original and catchy, or somewhat inspiring. What I truly enjoyed was how some songs had singing, while others were very heavy. These elements are presented with 2 different types of vocals. My favorite, being the growling vocals, sounds monstrous combined with european-sounding riffs (very death-metalish), and Fear My Thought's sound is nowhere near just imitation. When I listen to bands like As I Lay Dying, I feel as if they are trying to copy Swedish bands. Fear My Thoughts is nothing like that, and they can very well be passed on as a European band in some songs. In others, I did feel industrial moments such as "In the Hourglass." The singing is put to a minimal, and isn't used as part of choruses. I highly recommend this album, as I come back for it many times while listening to music.

3 out of 5 stars Hell Sweet Hell: the melting pot of metalcore and melo death.......2005-09-10

I haven't heard any Fear My Thoughts albums before, but I know this is their fourth album, and by many touted as their heaviest and most 'metal' release. From what I understand, Fear My Thoughts used to be more involved in the metalcore scene, until they decided to bring in more Gothenburg elements, utilising more melodic passages, guitar harmonies, some synths, as well as a thrashier approach for the heavier stuff. Whether they've fully achieved their goal is debatable, however.

It is true that some songs certainly have the fingerprints of Swedish death metal bands like At the Gates and the more technical arangements heard on earlier Darkane discs. "My Delight" and "Sweetest Hell" are both insanely melodic in structure, but at the same time, there is an obvious forced effort on the band's part to inject some truly unnecessary scream vocals in the mix, just to keep true to the Killswitch Engage-type of singing. While the thrashy riffage mixed with speedy drum work on these songs is highly impressive, Matthias von Ockl's vocal style make them a hard listen. Similarly, the more metalcore works on this album, such as "Windows for the Dead", "In the Hourglass" and "Ghosts of Time", are filled with rather bland generic guitar riffs that seem to repeat themselves not only in one tune, but pretty much every other track. Clean vocal harmonies are used to create a more catchy chorus but hardly blend with the intense Gothenburg guitar melodies that are pushed into the song for reasons I don't understand. This just strengthens my opinion that, when writing this album, the band must have been in a huge identity crisis, not knowing whether they should play metalcore or melodic death with nothing new to offer. Some bands just need to realize that the fusion of metalcore and Gothenburg rarely succeeds, mainly because they are entirely different genres with no common ground.

Still there is a good dose of dual harmonic lead guitar work, with interesting stop-start breaks, and the occasional synth line that helps lift the choruses. Sadly, repeated listens only serve to reveal how many recycled riffs and drum fills permeat Fear My Thoughts' songcraft. The only exception is the last song, built around acoustic guitars, entirely clean sung vocals that slighlty border on gothic rock, spoken words, huge keyboard atmospheres that surround the guitar theme, only to be replaced by the initial acoustic melody in the outro. The album was produced by Jacob Hansen known for his great work with Mercenary and Communic.

Fear My Thoughts strikes me as one of those bands you'll hear a couple of times, but will rarely want to go back to their albums. They really have to forge themselves a more defined musical path if they want to survive in a genre with so many metalcore and melodic death bands.

I was pretty excited to hear FMT had a new cd coming out. The Great Collapse was indeed well, but i thought they could have done better. and they did. Hell Sweet Hell blew my mind. i had heard the songs from their label, Lifeforce. i was so impressed i had to buy the cd. everything about this cd is great. the few clean vocals that there are, are great. his high and low screams are killer. the melodies and thrash style make this cd great. and yes they do have breakdowns. imagine something along the lines of In Flames' Colony/Clayman with some breakdowns...good stuff

What a great line-up of singers on this disc! Although Campions' songs are written as solo songs he stated at the time that they may also be enjoyed as part songs. On this CD they are tastefully mixed both vocally and instrumentally. There are trios with soprano, tenor, baritone and lute where the lute is treated almost like another voice part. Each of the singers has a solo or two and Chance has several. It is also good to keep in mind that Thomas Campion (l567-l620) was a poet as well as a musician who had the capability of putting together the two art forms, words and music. As he says, "lovingly coupled together." From over 100 songs it was difficult to select only 25, but Campion helped us by placing his prize songs often at the beginning of a volume. And it is certainly appropriate to present these chosen songs with varied vocal combinations. My favorites are the last three on the album: "The Sypres curten of the night is spread" (Michael Chance); "Author of Light" (quartet:(Elliott-soprano;Chance-countertenor;Padmore-tenor;Harvey -baritone) and "Never weather-beaten Saile" (Chance).

This is a great comp for a great cause. Check out Everclear's Smith's cover, and Mary Lou Lord's Ween cover (does she ever do her own stuff? ;) ). I also love the Low song, which just happens to be a Bee Gees cover. It's a great selection of bands, and superior to the other Jabberjaw compilation.
