Fujiya & Miyagi are not Japanese nor are they a duo, but are in fact a trio of rather cheeky Brits. Keeping with the multi-cultural theme, they also love Neu!-style Krautrock, with its metronome rhythms and cerebral melodies. This second release after 2003's Electro Karaoke in the Negative Style is filled with sly statements and cute jokes about commodity and materialism--Transparent Things is a particularly apt title--but more than anything else it's a goofball lark. With the music-nerd navel-gazing of LCD Soundsystem, but also the sonic aesthetic of Stereolab, it can be enjoyed regardless of whether you want to get geeky. Some might say it's best enjoyed that way, as some of the record's most enjoyable moments, like the skittery last few minutes of "Photocopier" or the instrumental "Cassettesingle" aren't about words at all. At times it's downright danceable, with tracks like "Reeboks in Heaven" exhibiting an abstract, electro grooviness. Their devotion to quirk ends up being a little too cute occasionally (like when they use the band name as a chant in "Ankle Injuries"), but their energy is so harmless it's easy to overlook it. Don't worry about getting all the jokes; Fujiya & Miyagi would likely be happier if you turned your brain off and cut a rug instead. --Matthew Cooke

Album Description

Fans of Hot Chip and Air will appreciate Fujiya & Miyagi's brand of witty and wiry electronica. Singer Dave Best whispers obtuse stream-of-consciousness lyrics about scoring new kicks ("Collarbone") and getting socked by a girl ("Sucker Punch") over slinky dance-punk backdrops. "We were just pretending to be Japanese," the frontman playfully repeats in "Photocopier." But don't be fooled -- their urban jungle soundtrack is the real deal.

5 out of 5 stars Transparent Things.......2007-06-27

This is one of the best discoveries I've made in years.
It sounds new, different and refreshing from the
current music scene. You will love it, too.

5 out of 5 stars oooooo! oooooo!.......2007-05-14

This album rules except for the song "Sucker punch" everything else is awesome...I really dig kraut rock and dance music, so when you put it together I really really dig it!

5 out of 5 stars do you wear reeboks in heaven?.......2007-05-08

my answer is yes, I'll even wear the high-tops to kick it old school... my only condition: I gotta have this album playing in the background. it is absolutely catchy from start to finish (it reminds me a little of the Hot Chip album, Junior Boys' recent material, even some AIR back when Moon Safari was the shananigan... it still is actually), but they got their own krautrock/electronic thing going without taking themselves too seriously... just listen to the lyrics for crying out loud... they're hilarious. the "collarbone" track is outstanding, as well as "photocopier", "in one ear..." and the aforementioned "reeboks in heaven"... they are perfect to kick it back before going out, or even for the after-party... it will get everyone in a terrific, funky, let's-get-up and dance mood... highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Entertaining album from start to finish. Buy It Now!.......2007-03-09

Leave it to a couple of UK studs to come up with a sound this brilliant. 'Hilarious Euro-pop with slick bass lines' is a fairly accurate description but doesn't do this album justice. The recording is crystal and the beats are easy and fun to follow. "Got to get a new pair of shoes, to kick it with her, not kick it with you" is just one example of F&M's delightfully amusing choruses. This is perfect conversation-piece music that will extinguish any drama or awkward silence at your next gathering. Your guests will thank you, and your mp3 player will appreciate your good taste.

Album Description

The fifth installment in the Other Side series features the critically acclaimed rapper/producer Madlib on the mix CD and Stones Throw's Peanut Butter Wolf `s visual guide to LA's sights, sites and sounds on DVD. Madlib's diverse audio tour includes tracks from the eclectic/outrageous jazz consciousness originator - Sun Ra Arkestra, 60's psychedelic blues quintet Outlaw Blues Band, legendary reggae drummer (Burning Spear) Leroy "Horsemouth" Wallace, Jamaican record label head/DJ Producer Prince Jazzbo, and Madlib's own tunes- as Beat Konducta (solo) & with collaborator Jaydee (Jaylib) and an exlusive track "Infinity". Hailing from the unlikely beach town of Oxnard, 40 miles north of Los Angeles, the multi-dimensional Madlib quickly rose to prominence as one of the most interesting figures in late-'90s hip-hop. His expansive style and deft touch for composition made him one of hip-hop's most sought-after producers. An enthusiastic crate digger, with a deep reverence for jazz and soul, Madlib branched out into a number of ambitious, engaging solo projects. After hooking up with Los Angeles DJ Peanut Butter Wolf, Madlib did a lot of production for Wolf's Stones Throw label. In 1999 the label released Quasimoto's astonishing The Unseen LP. Doubling as himself and his alter ego Quasimoto, Madlib handled vocals and production duties on the album, a huge critical success. With each year Madlib has continued to expand his abilities beyond the core hip hop that he is known for and The Other Side - Los Angeles proves the point again.

2 out of 5 stars Good CD, BAD DVD - I paid to watch adverts?.......2007-06-10

The DVD included with this item is just boring blatant advertising. You just watch PBW walk in and out of each shop doing mundane things and asking pointless questions to the owners/staff; but not before he makes sure you know the name of the shop and its website and street address etc.

The CD on the other hand is quite good. There were no tracks which I disliked. A great assorment of tracks from Jazz, Regae, Hip-Hop, Funk and Blues, the last track escpecially by the Freestyle Fellowship is sweet as.

I would recommend buying the soundtrack, but steer clear of the DVD unless you want to watch 60 mins of advertisments.

4 out of 5 stars Loads of content and music for your money........2007-04-06

The previous Time Out releases featured continuous mixes by the listed DJ (including a great techno mix by Black Strobe on Time Out Paris) with a double sided, dual disc and the DVD features on the flipside. The latest installment, Berlin, sadly only features a tracklisting compiled by Ellen, as I was very disappointed to realize the tracks were not DJ mixed. It's also quite odd, as some tracks continuously play into the next (kind of a soft mix into one another), but others stop prior to the next one starting. Most tracks play out for their entire durations. We will still get two DJ mixes from Ellen this year: the 4th installment in her BoogyBytes mix series (as Modeselektor is about to release the 3rd), and a mix for Fabric.

Aside from my disappointment of it not being a full DJ mix, Allien has compiled a list of some very good techno goodies, including two of the most popular tech house/minimal tracks of 2006, Âme's Rej and Booka Shade's In White Rooms. There is also a stunning Carl Craig remix of Rhythm & Sound's Poor People Must Work. Ellen has ecclectic taste in music, and this one is no different, as she adds a punk track, and one classic rock song that is actually sung in German by David Bowie.

The DVD portion really impressed me, as it surpasses the others in this series (Time Out Paris was only 24 minutes total), and they have gone to a separate disc and added much more content. It is also chock full of more techno and IDM tracks that are not on the CD portion. It starts off with a very well produced 48 minute documentary hosted by the übercute Ellen, who takes us shopping for clothes and records, and hangs out with other electronic artists like Modeselektor, Seth Hodder, and even Richie Hawtin, who all chat briefly on camera. She mostly speaks English, but some portions are subtitled when she speaks German. On top of that, the background music is full of tracks from Ellen's own current and back catalog, which makes this a well rounded 48 minute tour full of great sights and sounds.

The DVD still has more to come, with segments ranging from 8 to 27 minutes, concetrating on shopping, food, clubs, accomodations, and other miscellaneous sites in and around Berlin. And all this set to even more juicy techno tracks, that I believe are mostly from Ellen's BPitch Control label. It's just the music playing, with informational text at the bottom as they visit many locations. I wish they provided a tracklisting! There is a total of 2 hours and 20 minutes of video footage, between these segments and Ellen's portion, all set to the best musical background one could ever want for a documentary!

This is a great purchase, and could have been a truly overwhelming release, had it just had a full DJ mix by Ellen on the CD, but what we do have is an incredible amount of techno music and one very well produced DVD video on Berlin.

4 out of 5 stars Dahlquist's Side Project Delivers A Top Notch Performance!.......2006-04-16

Robert Dahlquist, lead guitarist for the great Hellacopters, shows his songwriting abilities with his band Thunder Express. On their debut album We Play For Pleasure, Dahlquist and co. get down with some inspired, old fashioned, no-frills rock and roll. The band, inspired by all-time greats MC5, Stooges, The Stones and The Faces, really sets out to have both fun and deliver a top notch performance. Thunder Express succeeds and as a result delivers a very satisfying CD. Some highlights are the heavy Stupid Lies, jumping Always Something New and great In My Mind. On their website, Thunder Express states that they are recording a second album, I will be looking forward to hearing it as I'm sure it will be great.

    5 out of 5 stars Great music.......2007-05-16

This is a really nice album. I was somewhat wary of picking it up due to the fact that Pharoah plays exclusively soprano, but his playing on the smaller horn is just fantastic. The presence of Woody Shaw and Gary Bartz adds a nice texture to the music, though their roles as soloists are pretty minor. Pianist Lonnie Liston Smith has some really nice Tynerish playing. As other reviewers have mentioned, there's little of the yodeling that appears on other Pharoah albums from this period.

The first tune works itself into a frantic modal groove with lots of colorful percussion. It reminds me a lot of McCoy Tyner's work from the early 70s, though there's more collective improvisation on this disc.

The second track is a really magical, beautiful performance of "Let Us Go into the House of the Lord". Arranged much like Coltrane's "Psalm" and "Song of Praise", Pharoah's ecstatic playing frames great solos by Smith and bassist Cecil McBee.

Personally, I like this album more than the better-known Karma. This is the kind of disc that will appeal to fans of McCoy Tyner's early 70s work, Sweetnighter-era Weather Report, or Keith Jarrett's Impulse albums. Recommended!

3 out of 5 stars Followup to the stunning records of the previous year........2005-10-13

After the triumph of 1969 and "The Creator Has a Masterplan", Pharoah Sanders entered the studio in the summer of 1970 to record again-- gone from the sessions of the previous year was vocalist Leon Thomas, and the hole left by him is felt.

"Deaf Dumb Blind (Summun Bukmum Umyum)", the result of this session, finds an octet performing music similar in tone to last year's "Sun in Aquarius" (off of "Jewels of Thought"). Sanders, eschewing his usual tenor sax in favor of the soprano, wood flutes, and whistles is joined by trumpeter Woody Shaw, altoist Gary Bartz, longtime musical partner pianist Lonnie Liston Smith, bassist Cecil McBee, drummer Clifford Jarvis, and percussionists Nathaniel Bettis and Anthony Wiles. The soaking of percussion (just about everyone is credited with some form of percussion) and Smith's piano phrasing lend some consistency to the sound with previous records, but with Sanders only performing on the straight horn, that deep digging he managed on previous albums is lacking, and certainly at times you think, "wow this would be perfect for that Leon Thomas styled improv" (the attempts at replicating it by Woody Shaw and Nathaniel Bettis fall far short), and while the two extended pieces (one is 21 minutes, the ohter about 18) are both decent listens, neither is particularly attention getting. Admittedly, "Let Us Go Into the House of the Lord" fares better than the title track, but Sanders did much better in the past.

Still, if you're craving more after "Karma" and "Jewels of Thought", this is a decent place to look.

    4 out of 5 stars ERMM!.....Cool.......2003-05-06

Ok let me just anounce that i am actually a dance music producer so i dont normally listen to jazz apart from at college, but as part of the college motto `Broaden your interest' well i thought that i might aswell atleast try to understand jazz.
So i come to this site and had a listen to some of the tunes on offer including this one, and had actually thought it was fairly good due to the rythem of the tunes there is a certain vibe that leaves you feeling jiggy of some sort.
And normally when i listen to jazz it uaually annoise me but this one did not so there fore i rate it quite well, in my opinion its got to be one of the most exciting jazz albums for me anyway, but any jazz fans outthere i recomend this to ya as a taste of something with a bit of zest or VaVaVa VOOM!.

    Thanx

    5 out of 5 stars Very spiritual.......2002-12-11

My understatement, of course it's spritual, it's Pharoah Sanders! That being said I find the second track here "let us go into the house of the lord" to be one of his most spiritual tracks. We all hear different things though in Pharoah's music, those of us who know it and love it, some prefer Pools of Thought, some Thembi, others Black Unity, the key is that they are all great, you really can't go wrong with any of his impulse! releases.

5 out of 5 stars Maybe the Best Impulse Album.......2002-10-17

It's hard to rate Pharoah's Impulse albums. They are all supreme examples of spiritual depth in music. But Deaf, Dumb and Blind may be the greatest in my opinion...perhaps even better than the superb Karma, and that's saying alot.

First of all, the percussion groove on this album really kicks! Sometimes, both on Karma and on Jewels of Thought, the percussion sounds more like a collection of colors, rather than a propelling force. On this CD the percussion is out front, and deeply African in spirit. Propelled by marvelous conga playing from Anthony Wiles and African percussion from Nathaniel Bettis, great trap work by Clifford Jarvis, along with the rest of the ensemble on small percussion, the pieces really cook. Second, the horn section is stellar; Woody Shaw and Gary Bartz. Third, you have the first large scale appearance of Pharoah on soprano, which is every bit as beautiful as his tenor playing. Fourth, (and this may not pertain to everyone) there's no yodelling, or at least very little. I actually like Leon Thomas' contributions to Karma and Jewels, but I know that it puts many people off. This album is all instrumental.

Both cuts on the album are stellar. Summun, Bukmun, Umyun (Deaf, Dumb and Blind) is one of Pharoah's long two chord jams. With the wonderful percussion behind it, the track is both tied to the earth and wandering in the heavens all at once. The second track, Let Us Go Into the House of the Lord is a sublime, out of tempo modal chant. It moves me to tears.

In their time, Pharoah's Impulse albums never got the credit they deserved. Critics either dismissed him as just revamping old Coltrane ideas, or as too involved with the 60s rock ethos. Conservatives felt he was too free and had no traditional chops, and the progressives felt that the unrestrained modalisms of the albums represented a betrayal of the avant-garde energy school and a step back from Pharoah's ground breaking work with Trane. Both sides got Pharoah all wrong. Pharoah was trying to speak peace in a world that just didn't want to hear it...and that meant following his muse, no matter where it led him. It still does mean that for Pharoah, and he still leaves fans confused. Those who want him to retain his fire from the Trane period are disappointed with the ballad albums and the Bill Laswell produced things. Those who want a more mellow Pharoah are shocked by the fire of albums like Spirit. The true mark of Pharoah's genius is that he goes his own way always, no matter what anyone else says.

So snap up this album soon. Word is that the company who owns the Impulse catalogue is thinking of discontinuing the series again, so who knows when you may have the chance again. Work this beautiful needs to be heard.

This album is one of my favourites, for the time being at least. Since I bought it, some months ago, I have listened to almost every day, and I never get sick of it. And every time I think I've got a favourite song the one that follows sounds just as amazing. It's not an album on where you can listen to perhaps four songs and then turn off because you're in a hurry, once you've put it on you must listen to them all. I must admit that I have felt a bit booring listening to it all the time and I've tried to mix it up with some of my other, also very good, albums. But still, when I turn on my walkman what do I hear but the beautiful intro to Run. I can't come up with anything that speaks against this album, maybe that it's too short. But at the same time, the best albums are the ones you never want to end but still do. Just as this does.

      5 out of 5 stars simply amazing.......2002-04-13

this is undoubtedly the greatest rap metal album i have ever bought. i had the version released in the UK which didn't have 'get it' on but did have another song which in my opinon is better than 'get it' but was probably removed because of the controverciality of it's title, but that copy got a really bad scratch and i couldn't find the same one so i bought this one. if you can i urge you to get the old version theres only a difference of one song but it's worth it.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Metal album EVER.......2000-04-15

Those who like Rap metal should really get the original version of this album and play it really loud. I personally think they are the best Rap Metal band that eve walked this plannet.

5 out of 5 stars Thank you, Lubo!.......2000-01-22

I had come to the US for college and about a year after my arrival my brother, Lubo, sent me a few tapes of new music he had liked back in Bulgaria. One of these was Clawfinger's Deaf, Dumb, Blind. I was swamped with school work and for a while the tape was just lying hidden in some corner of my dorm room. When I finally got to it, I realized what treasure I had been neglecting. Due to the fact that CD's last much longer than tapes, a couple of years later I spent the money for the CD. Clawfinger are a wonderful band which was doing what is so hip today so many years ago and so much better! These Swedes are still undiscovered by American audiences. There is no better example of the rap-metal mix than this and any other Clawfinger album. "The Truth" was (justifiably) song/video of the year on MTV Europe the year the album was released there. "Catch Me" is my favourite on the album -- the lyrics are awesome. The only thing that is missing on this version is the anti-racism song which opens the original version of Deaf, Dumb, Blind. Maybe it is due to the title of the song (which I am not going to write down for fear that the review will not get posted, but it is the derogatory term for a black person), maybe there was a completely different reason... I have been wondering about it for years. Although the album is still one of the best of all time, I feel others are deprived of the strong message of the missing song. In any case: Don't miss this one!

4 out of 5 stars Simply the BEST Rap-Metal band in the World.......1999-09-13

After listening to this album i couldn't take my headphones off. Everywhere i'd go, even to do the shopping, i had to listen to it. When you listen to it, it transports you to another state of mind and just pass the time much faster. That is only one commodity.......
