5 out of 5 stars Instruments of the Orchestra - Great Reference Material!.......2007-04-04

This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. I highly recommend this for all who wish to understand the origin of music, as well as the processes that are employed to create music!

5 out of 5 stars Beginner or Expert.......2007-03-12

This CD is excellent for the beginner or expert! To be able to haear the instrumets separately and then together really provides a good education. and/or refresher. The book thaty comes with the CD is alomost worth the price by itself!

5 out of 5 stars Very Informative and Enjoyable.......2006-11-20

Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!

3 out of 5 stars Frank's view.......2006-08-19

This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Intro for Those Not Familiar with the Orchestra.......2003-11-08

I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.

The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!

I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.

The one complaint I have is the last CD. This deals with the orchestra. I wanted more of a tour of how the orchestra has been used through history up to the present. Instead, it was a tour of how different groups of instruments sound. I thought it could have been better. The other 6 CDs are excellent.

5 out of 5 stars An eclectic mix that's sure to satisfy..........2007-05-10

I was introduced to MF DOOM in Art School and have enjoyed his wit and style for years now. This box set is the perfect companion to any collection of his work and is the only affordable way to own all the herbs. Super chill background music, 70's, 80's lounge and if you have seen the new film 'Grindhouse' you may recognise a few tracks from the 'Intermission' sections. A scholar, a gentleman, the one and only, MF DOOM.

4 out of 5 stars good, but not what I expected.......2007-01-10

This album is pretty good, as you would expect from any madlib, metal fingerz, ect but falls short on the length of the individual tracks. All of the beats are only about half to a third of their original length. But if you do not own any metal fingerz and like hip-hop beats I would highly suggest this cd set. Also you might want to checkout rjd2 or dj shadow.

5 out of 5 stars Oh Yeah. This is exactly how Special Herbs should be presented........2006-05-20

The Special Herbs collections are essentially instrumental-only tunes of what you have heard from MF DOOM / VIKTOR VAUGHN before and then some extra stuff that did not make it to the final cut and of course tunes that MF DOOM had being working on but had no place outside of an instrumental offering. Hence the name, Special Herbs! I would suggest that you search out a full MF DOOM collection and then get these supplements unless you are looking for instrumental-only hip-hop. If you are, then you have come to the right place.

Special Herbs: The Box Set is Special Herbs vol. 0-9. You get all five double albums for the price of two albums. So it is much better value. MF DOOM has done it again. You can play this album from start to end for a full day in your home and never get bored with any of it. It is a masterwork.

4 out of 5 stars Simple Tracks that are Too Short.......2006-05-08

Overall the CD is okay. The beats are simple but good. Nothing out of the ordinary. simple baseline with layers. Good for background/lounge music or for freestyling wit yer homies. I just found that alot of the tracks were too short. Also you have the titles not matching up with the tracks on the CD. When I originally bought this CD I was looking for "Emblica Officinalis" after sampling the CD at the store I thought that it was not on this box set so I purchased both CD's, volume 0-9 and volume 7-8. Only after I got home and played the 0-9 did I realize that the joints don't match up. All-in-all the cd is dope, a little dark due to the organ samples but still dope. If you want a dope instrumental CD try Pete Rock. I have yet to be let down by the Soul Brother #1

4 out of 5 stars Songs Mix but so do the titles.......2006-04-21

More than 80 songs! That was the first reason why I bought this wicked collection of MF Doom tracks! Instrumentals all come from special herbs 0 - 9 which I think is unreal since it all fits into 2 cds and plus you got a bonus cd with 10 hidden tracks. The only major flaw in this album is that the songs dont go according to the titles displayed in the inner flap of the cd case. For example, it says the song is played on the first track but it is really played on the 8th track. Really confusing but other than that...4 stars!

Celine Dion's straight-from-the-heart, sincerity-stung singing, woven together with Anne Geddes' visual gifts, perform a neat symbiotic trick. If you never quite got Geddes' photographs (not everyone can find artistic merit in lineups of sleepyheaded newborns dressed as bumblebees), or if Celine's vocals seemed over-the-top emotional, this package irons out the separate but unsinkable appeal of both artists with drawstring-like efficiency. On the DVD, Celine's vocals are the musical equivalent of comfort food, zapping the weirdness out of the babies-as-blooms sequences with raw maternal warmth. And Geddes' playful images--the title track tucks a newborn into a lotus leaf, and "What a Wonderful World" blazes to life in bouquets of red rose bonnets--leavens Celine's swollen-hearted delivery with whimsy. Miracle's subtitle is A Celebration of New Life, and while Geddes and Dion go at it with opposite M.O.s, they meet in the middle with a box set to be prized for its exploration of the shades of a parent's love. There are a couple of reasons not to keep this package cribside, though: For one, the urge to stare dreamily at a sleeping newborn while Celine's stunning rendition of "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" plays notwithstanding, her note-pounding delivery is at times un-lullaby-like. For another, the images gathered in the 57-page booklet that accompanies the DVD and CD are too captivating to risk dampening with drool. --Tammy La Gorce

5 out of 5 stars A Beautiful Miracle.......2006-08-27

This is simply the best for a new mom, and the pics are beautiful with music by Celine that will amaze. My neice just had a new baby girl, and she loved this gift I gave her.Because ALL Babies are truly a miracle.

1 out of 5 stars I hate it !.......2005-10-11

I am wondering WHEN this plague will be over....
and WHEN we'll be set free to listen to real music...
We all are so tired of her !

3 out of 5 stars If you love Geddes, consider upgrading your purchase.......2004-11-30

If you love the photographs of Anne Geddes, I'd recommend buying the larger 180 page book. The small 60 page booklet is only a teaser. Either you love her photos (in which case you'll want the larger book) or you only like her photos (in which case, the booklet won't do much for you, and you might as well just buy the CD). I love her photos, and having seen the booklet, then went out and bought the larger 180 page book (which also comes with a CD), and now I have 2 CDs.

I had hoped the DVD might focus on how Geddes took the photos, but alas, it was a very high level overview. It focused mainly on how Geddes & Dion met, discussions around how the concept for the album/book evolved and some cute stories about all the babies that peed on Dion during the shoots.

Overall, this would make a nice gift, but if you can afford it, I'd recommend getting the larger book instead.

1 out of 5 stars Weak, self-serving, waterd-down "art".......2004-11-20

I am appalled at the self-serving attitude of this "book". It is amazing how a group of so-called educated people can call this book "amazing" and "wonderful". This book does nothing but push Celine Dion's arrogant face into the public once again. Lest we forget her over-written pop songs or the cartoonishly vile Anne Geddes and her exploitation of babies. Slap a newborn in any costume and it becomes "cute". Anything with a baby is cute. But to package babies wadded into the hands of someone like Celine Dion is borderline obscene.

And "Oh Joy" we get some songs from Ms. Dion. Why don't you just drive the knife just a little bit deeper into my sense of good taste?

I hope Ms. Geddes and Ms. Dion are happy with their work. I am sure this "book" will be bought by the masses of people who fall for packaged art simply because it has names that have been forced upon us. Open your eyes and see this for what it really is. A vehicle to capitalize on two watered-down artists who would sell their names to anyone for the right price

5 out of 5 stars Very emotional combination of image and that "voice".......2004-10-27

As many people I just bought the Miracle box set because I'm a Celine "hard core" fan. I must confess I never heard of Anne Geddes before but I'm glad I was able to enjoy her incredible talent as a photographer, looking at these beautiful pictures so full of tenderness. There is not much that I can say about Celine in this new album, her marvelous voice says it all (as always.) My 2 favorites, "Miracle" and "If I could" they made me stop for a minute and think about how much my Mother has loved me and how much I owe her. Thank you Mom.
If you are sensitive enough you'll feel the love in Celine's voice and it will make you feel good even if you are crying for the emotion. CD and book won't dissapoint you.
note:
For a fan, I think this is the best format out of the 3, because you get all the Celine pictures out of the book, the CD and the DVD.

It is a great collection of a phenomenal singer! Just get it.

4 out of 5 stars Needs improvement Beware of sticker on Shrinkwrap & note on box.......2005-08-05

This is so disappointing. This Special fan box contains the Gremany versions Aaliyah's last 3 albums : "one In A Millon", "Aaliyah" and "I care 4 U". "one in a million" and "Aaliyah" contain bonus tracks which are fatured on "I care 4 U". "I care 4 U" contains a bonus dvd with music videos and bonus tracks found on "Aaliyah" and is enhanced with the video to "Miss you". Here is what is so disappointing about this set. 1. There is a note on the box and on the Shrinkwrap (for those who but it still sealed) that says "ALL AALIYAH VIDEOS ON DVD" That is a LIE! You'll only be getting one extra video than the US limited edition cd/dvd combo had : "Miss You". So in other words, you'll only get a total of 10 videos instead of nine like the US edition. The "Miss You" video is the only PLUS you'll get. You'll also get a MINUS, The track "Messed up" that is the hidden track on the US release of "Aaliyah" is not a part of this set. there are no videos from "Age ain't nothing but a number". Aaliyah did more than 9 videos in her career. Plus you'll need a dvd player that supports The PAL format to play this. It is region 0 but PAL formatted. When it says "All Aaliyah videos on DVD", we should get every single video she made. That is false advetising. By the way, "One in a million" and "Aaliyah" state that they are copy protected. They copy about once or twice before copy protecting themselves.

Oh it's great. 59 songs . 2 cds. it's so cool. one of the best cds out of "Age Ain't Nothing But A Number,One In A Million,Aaliyah and I Care For U".Boy its the best .

4 out of 5 stars Black Box LOL.......2003-10-21

I remember hearing "Everybody" on the radio and I loved it. Then a little while later, I saw it performed on Soul Train. Even at the ripe old age of 9, I knew that the French chick who couldn't speak a lick of English, lip-synching the lyrics, wasn't the one who recorded the vocals. It was so funny because my mother was like, "Now they need to be ashamed of themselves! Anyone with a brain in their heads, knows that that's Martha Wash's voice!" And sure enough, Ms. Wash filed a lawsuit against the record company. But all silliness aside, the music was damn good!

    5 out of 5 stars Great Writers...Awesome Singer.......2002-02-03

Back in the hayday of vinyl and all it's glory came some soulful, yet very danceable club music. Born into mainstream became the writers and more importantly the singer attributed to Black Box. Perhaps one of the most unknown talents in this world; Martha Wash carries and dominates this album with her soulful and beautiful voice. Though not into "top 10" pop music, some of the singles on this album did just that...made it into the charts. Classics for me are "I Don't Know Anybody Else" with it's danceable groove...I often close my eyes and can see myself on the dance floor. I've just started my CD collection and this is one of the first one's I sought after. I just wish the writers and Martha would hook up again.

5 out of 5 stars Dance Music Par Excellance.......2001-04-29

I don't know how I heard about this band (back in 1995) but I bought this CD (The Greatest Hits) and it was soon my number one workout CD. I still can listen to it and never tire of the songs. As a dance music collector and part time DJ, this CD would get everyone out there and feeling good. The music isn't too disco-y, too techno or too rap. It's got solid musical writing/playing, great percussion and great singing by the female vocalist! She's so good I"m surprised she hasn't been nabbed by another band. I can only say I wish there was more Black Box music. I have a hundred dance cds (from the 70s through '01) and this is one of the best music in my collection.

I realize the wonderful vocalist did not authorize her tracks to be used. Well, I'm not privy to all the hi-jinks. But, apparently there were many. At any rate, the woman can sing. She can soar with her voice. She makes the songs. So, Miss Diva, if they did they did wrong by you (and I don't know the story, I'm just a music lover), you still sound incredible. I don't think this is a reason to pass up on one of the best dance albums made. The woman's voice is one-in-a-lifetime and the band is awesome, too. I guess there is a lot of drama behind the scenes those not in the biz don't really know about. We hear the music. But, I know it is a tough biz.

4 out of 5 stars Black Box featuring Loleatta Holloway and Martha Wash.......2000-09-01

Black Box did some of the BEST dance music of the era!

They had three hits on Billboard Hot 100:

song;date of entry;# weeks on chart; highest position

    1 Everybody Everybody; 08-04-1990; 19; 8;
    2 I Don't Know Anybody Else; 12-08-1990; 14; 23;
    3 Strike It Up; 04-06-1991; 18; 8

"Ride On Time" is a classic. . .

Who is the girl on the cover on the album "Dreamland? It's NOT one of the singers! But she's pretty hot!!
