Wonderful CD.......2005-09-22
I only would like to say that this is a first class disc. I love classical music since the barroque century to our days. Thank you very much.
Versailles, Le Roi Soleil, et Lully.......2002-06-19
Great music, wonderfully performed, historically accurrate,
what else could we ask for.
A great introduction to the father of French opera.......2002-06-11
Considering his historical importance as the founder of French Baroque opera, it is perhaps surprising that Jean-Baptiste Lully has not received the same degree of attention on disc as his rivals and followers. The revival of French Baroque music which has been such a phenomenon over the last two or three decades has only rarely paid him much attention. Listeners seem to find the harmonic daring of Marc-Antoine Charpentier or the incredible colour and imagination of Jean-Philippe Rameau far more to their taste. Lully's suave, well-crafted music is often dismissed as bland beside the music of these figures and that of Lully's English follower, Purcell. But as this well-filled (78 minutes) disc of extracts from the whole range of his stage music demonstrates, Lully was a considerable and innovative composer in his own right. If you are new to Lully, this is the ideal place to start.
The new recording tells the story of how this ambitious, and frequently ruthless, young Florentine transformed himself into a French citizen and friend of "Le Roi Soleil", just as he transformed the Italian opera of the mid-seventeenth century into something uniquely Gallic. Lully began by catering to the young King Louis XIV's mania for dance with a series of comedies-ballets written in collaboration with Moliere. Extracts from two of them, "Georges Dandin" and "L'Amour Medecin" are included here, where the Italian influence is still strong with plenty of lively comedy. This phase of Lully's career culminated with the amazing five-hour extravaganza, "Psyche", in 1671. Two powerful choruses from this divertissement start the disc.
It was while he was working on "Psyche" that Lully met the librettist Philippe Quinault who was to be his partner in forging a distinctively French form of opera, the 'tragedie lyrique'. Quinault's contribution was vitally important since Lully saw opera as an equal marriage of words and music. The key would be expressive recitative rather than the show arias that dominated the Italian 'opera seria' of the time. The chorus and ballet would also play a major part in the divertissements which ended each act, offering a chance for Lully to show off his musical imagination. Some of the best examples of this come in the extracts from the opera "Isis" (1677) included here. In fact the first audience found the music rather too imaginative and it soon acquired the reputation as a work for connoisseurs only, 'the musicians' opera'. One of the connoisseurs who appreciated it was Henry Purcell. The "Scene de Froid" inspired him to write the wonderfully atmospheric Frost Scene in his "King Arthur" (1691). You can hear immediately what appealed to the Englishman's imagination - the chattering chorus and shivering violins conjure up a vivid impression of extreme cold. It is quickly followed by a scene depicting blazing heat - the smithy of the Chalybes, where the ringing percussion suggests the music of Wagner's Nibelheim two hundred years later. But the most haunting music is a lament by the god Pan for the nymph Syrinx, after her transformation into a reed. It is touchingly accompanied by woodwind and an organ. The characteristic Lullian blend of words and music (which is possibly one reason why many non-French speaking Baroque enthusiasts find a whole Lully opera hard to listen to) is illustrated by scenes from "Armide" and "Roland". In the latter, the hero Roland searches for his lost love Angelique. Lully's music conjures up a beautiful pastoral scene using only smoothly sliding strings, becoming more and more troubled as Roland learns from the names carved into the trees that his beloved has married his rival, Medor. Finally, Roland explodes into rage, his anguish turns to madness and the music rages too. In "Armide", the eponymous heroine, a pagan sorceress, has lulled the Christian hero Renaud asleep so she can stab him to death. However, when she sees him lying defenceless, she falls in love with him and cannot bring herself to commit the murder. Armide's monologue included here, where she hesitates between hatred and love, has always been rightly regarded as one of the high points of the entire French repertoire with its masterly psychological depiction of the tortured enchantress. The disc ends with a love duet between Armide and Renaud from the final act of the opera, followed by another dance, the massive 'grande passecaille'. Its interweaving musical lines have an extraordinary, hypnotic beauty.
Christie's staging and recording of the opera "Atys" is widely considered one of the landmarks in the revival of Lully and this new disc is generally very well performed. My one quibble is with Rinat Shaham who takes the part of Armide - her voice is not really powerful enough to suggest the mighty sorceress, especially when compared with Guillemette Laurens who took the role in the complete recording under Philippe Herreweghe. But otherwise, highly recommended, especially to those who have yet to appreciate Lully's considerable musical gifts. (Brys)

SImply Untrue.......2006-08-16
The previous review is simply a gross falsification. I have been an obsessed opera fan for a long time, and Thomas Hampson is a truly special singer. He is not the possesor of the largest or most interesting voice, which he will tell you and indeed says so all the time. His commitment to text, his willingness to search out parts to fit his voice, and his dedication to art song make im invaluable to Americans as a ture Troubador. His light Baritone was ideally suited to Figaro and to Valentin and the art song he loves. He must stretch to sing Verdi, where his voice sounds dry and small but many singers have chanced Verdi at their peril, and his innate ablity to inhabit a song, here evidenced in Di Provenza overcomes fact that it is out of his fach. You misinformed opinion of Hampson is mean and strangly bitter. I love Opera, but I do not love every singer, which doesn't mean I debase their very artistic existance. I have seen Hampson live, and have loved him (in Thias) and somewhat disliked him (in Simon Boccanegra) As for him being pretentious, somwetimes I find him mannered, but always charming. SOmetimes Intellectualism can appear pretentious, but surely you wont hold an opera singer to the charge that he must be unintellectual. what a vitriolic review, please buy this Cd, it merits repeated listening to a true American SINGER,
an extra star for all the guest artists.......2006-05-08
The title of this album is an oxymoron. Or a sick joke. I can't decide. Sure he has made millions by luring the uninitiated listener into his web of deceit and conceit, but don't be fooled any longer. How fortunate Hampson has been to sing for and with great artists to shoulder his heavy load.
An Homage to a Great Artist.......2005-10-30
EMI is wisely creating a series of recordings to gather the moments of artists that showcase the very reasons they become so highly regarded. Usually these collections are produced late in careers or even posthumously, but in the case of THE VERY BEST OF THOMAS HAMPSON the artist is still one of the more active and premiere singers of our day. Yet while he doesn't still perform all of these inclusions, it is wonderful to have excerpts from various successful recordings to remind us of the artistry that Hampson represents.
The two disc set includes arias from operas: Rossini's 'Il barbière di Siviglia', von Weber's 'Euryanthe', Gounod's 'Faust', Massenet's 'Hérodiade', Bizet's 'Les Pêcheurs de perles' (in duet with Placido Domingo), Thomas' 'Hamlet', Verdi's 'Don Carlo', 'Il Travatore', 'Macbeth', 'La Traviata', and 'Falstaff', Korngold's 'Die Tote Stadt', and Wagner's 'Tannhäuser'.
But the rewards of a Hampson recording must include his impeccable career as a lieder stylist and on this recording are excerpts from Schumann's 'Dichterliebe', Schubert's 'Winterreise', Mahler's 'Rückert Lieder' and 'Das Lied von der Erde', as well as songs by Meyerbeer, Rossini, Grieg, Kalman, and Lehar. And very importantly there are examples of American songs that Hampson has always emphasized in his recitals. Works by Stephen Foster, and two extraordinary works with the brilliant accompanist Armen Guzelimian - 'An Old Song Re-sung' by Griffes and 'At Dawning' by Charles Wakefield Cadman - round out this fine survey.
Not usually a collector of such 'recombinations', for this listener this album is so very fine that it deserves the attention of all those who appreciate the artistry of Thomas Hampson - then and now. Highly recommended. Grady Harp, October 05
superb vocals.......2005-08-07
Mr.Hampson really gets the chance to showcase his wonderful baritone voice in this "Best of" collection which includes excellent selections from his various other CDs. I like the diversity of the selections featuring operatic arias, works from classical composers, and folk songs. For Thomas hampson fans, as well as fans of the baritone voice, this CD is for them.

Tibbett - Prima Voce.......2006-03-18
This is a great selection of his work and the recordings are great for their age.
The selections are very good and makes it enjoyable to be able to hear the voice of this famous man and be able to get a very good feel for his voice and style.
"the quintessential American artist".......2005-01-09
Lawrence Tibbett (1896-1960) was a magnificent bass-baritone, with a wide range both vocally and in repertoire, as he did Broadway as well as the opera he was most famous for, and had a charismatic stage presence that was so strong one can sense it through these recordings that were made during the height of his career, from 1926 through 1939.
Up until the last four decades, it was rare for an opera singer to achieve fame without a European background and resume, but Tibbett, born in Bakersfield, California, was one of the first and few to star at the Metropolitan without crossing the Atlantic, proof of his outstanding talent from the start.
Tibbett is brilliant in the arias chosen for this CD, which are sung in French, Italian, and German; favorites for me are the "Chanson du Toreador" (I have seen archival film footage of him singing this aria, which is fabulous and so memorable), the glorious melody of "Eri tu", in which we hear the darker tones of his rich voice, and the heavenly beauty of "Wie Todesahnung Dammrung" contrasted with power and emotion of "Wotan's Farewell".
The final track from "Simon Boccanegra", "Plebe ! Patrizi ! Popolo" includes the voices of some other big names from that great era at the Metropolitan Opera: Rose Bampton, Giovanni Martinelli, and Leonard Warren.
The sound has a few crackles, but overall has been very well re-mastered, and the age of the recordings becomes irrelevant once one becomes captured by the intensity and passion of Tibbett's singing. To quote the liner notes, these are "renditions seldom equaled, never surpassed".
The insert booklet contains notes, recording info, synopses of the arias, and photographs, and total playing time is 77'14.
Lawrence Tibbett, a singing actor.......2003-05-15
Lawrence Tibbett was my favorite singer when I was a little girl....and this album brought back memories of the many operas he did at the Met....You have to get used to the sound, but once past that, it is a great album......I just listened to the Bocelli Tosca, and recall Tibbett was a great Scarpia...the Te Deum is on this recording. So much of the music recorded by the great singers of yesteryear is being lost....and I felt this was a great find..All the numbers on this CD are great and one especially beautiful one is the Hymn to the Evening Star from Tannhauser...simply beautiful

Domingo, Freni, Ghiurov, Success!.......2005-08-09
Faust has never sounded more lush and dramatic than in the hands of these seasoned singers. Placido Domingo as Faust is appropriately conflicted, emotional and romantic. He gets into character from his first scene as he curses God for his futile existence and old age and to his last scene when he is dragged to Hell. Mirella Freni is in fine voice as Marguerite, truly her performance is the greatest of all possible Marguerites on record or stage. She's got a full lyric voice that soars with passionate intensity (the Church scene and the last scene in which she tries to save Faust from damnation and she's sent to Heaven). Her husband (or soon to be husband depending on the time of this recording) bass Nicolai Ghiurov, a great Russian bass, is on fire as the Devil, with all the darkness and power in his vocal performance alone. George Petre, a famed French conductor leads a primarily French orchestra with singers who are absolutely brilliant in their mastery of the French text. This cd offers only highlights (not the full-length recording available on Amazon.com as well). Here are the Waltz, the Calf Song, Marguerite's ornate "Jewel Aria" the Church Scene complete with demonic chorus, and the outstanding Final Trio (Ange Pure Ange Radieux)which I feel could somehow be better but is not all that bad. A great highlights CD.
A Faust That Soars.......2005-03-17
This recording of Gounod's Faust made in the late 70's, stars Placido Domingo, Mirella Freni and Nicolai Ghiuarov, a powerful trio which is reason enough in itself to seek this album for purchase. Opera fanatics, such as myself, are never content with one recording of one opera, when they can indulge in a variety of singers and styles of conducting. I own this recording and the one with Hadley, Gasdia and Samuel Ramey. Now, while I think this is a great Faust, it is only second best to the recording with Hadley/Gasdia/Ramey, mainly because the real spirit of the work, active in the orchestration and especially in the bass voice of Samuel Ramey, is more true to Charles Gounod's vision. This one, though, holds its own, mainly through the dramatic prowess and rich vocals of tenor Placido Domingo, soprano Mirella Freni and her husband bass Nicolai Ghiurov. Pretre, who is French, is also enjoying his slow pace of conducting, probably slowing down what ought to be faster so as to focus on the lush lyric beauty of the French style of the lead singers who have mastered the French technique down to a "T". Superb, top-notch performances by all three lead singers is what makes this album so attractive. These are only highlights from the full length album. In this album, we find the opening chorus, the Waltz and the scene in which Faust meets Marguerite in person for the first time, the Devil's "Calf Song", Marguerite's "Jewel Song", the Church Scene in which Marguerite prays while the Devil and demons mock her, and the awesome Trio Finale "Ange Pure, Ange Radieux".
For Gounod, Faust proved a masterpiece and the one opera that would become a standard repertoire for most opera companies at that time and now. The Met opened in the 1880's with Faust. It's the tragic tale of a pathetic elderly scholar/scientist who longs for eternal life and youth and romance. When the Devil tempts him with a vision of the beautiful village girl Marguerite, and offers him youth and good looks, he makes a deal with the Devil, offering up his soul. The plan takes effect when Marguerite, seduced by jewelry and materialistic things, is seduced by Faust. She eventually becomes pregnant with his baby. At the end of the opera, Faust is dragged to Hell while Marguerite is saved and ascends to Heaven. Faust, written by the German writer Goethe, figured in a lot of Romantic Era 19th century music. Berlioz composed La Damnation De Faust and Boito wrote "Mephistophele", while the "diabolically radical" composer Franz Liszt enjoyed composing themes on Faust and symphonic poems about it.

Excellent Pop-Rock.......2007-02-25
This is Robin and Phil (singer and drummer) from the Gin Blossoms' post-Blossoms effort. This CD came out in '99, and I was a little late getting it, but I'm a huge Gin Blossoms fan, and this does not dissapoint. Pretty similar to the Blossoms last record, perhaps a little more aggressive? Anyways, near perfect pop-rock. Don't player hate, get this.
It's NOT the Gin Blossoms.......2004-11-12
This wasn't what I expected coming from 2 of the members of the Gin Blossoms. Actually, I heard that the other member of the Gas Giants was a member of the Gin Blossoms way back in the day. Anyway... the Gin Blossoms put out incredible albums. Generally, there aren't many bad tunes on their cds. But the Gas Giants couldn't pull that off. "I hope my kids like Marylin Manson" and "Quitter" are really good songs. But the rest of the album is average at best. It was sort of a filler during the time when the Gin Blossoms had broken up. Hearing Robin's voice and Phil's beats was great but it lacked Bill's bass lines. But hey, they're not supposed to be the Gin Blossoms so I'll cut them some slack.
As a side note.. what the heck is with the name "Gas Giants" anyway????????????
A GREAT CD!.......2004-07-11
Many of these previous reviews hit it on the nail. ROBIN has a wonderful voice and makes this project, POPPIN' WHEELIES and now recording with the GIN BLOSSOMS again....reason to BUY this and the other ROBIN WILSON CDs! A CLASS act!
CLASSIC ROBIN!! NOW, DON"T FORGET THE POPPIN WHEELIES!!.......2003-09-19
Always been a Robin Wilson fan, as it seems he was the focal point of both the much-loved Gin Blossoms and his followup band here, the Gas Giants. His vocal style is just CLASSIC powerpop, and here, Robin is in VERY fine form. I just love the Gin Blossoms records, and their mix of great Big Star-ish powerpop, jangly REM/Byrds riffs, and a drop of alt-country for flavour.
Now, I love harder-edged powerpop too, like Cheap Trick, and here, on this flat-out FANTASTIC Gas Giants record, Robin and his pals seem to merge Robin's trademark vocal stylings of his Gin Blossoms days, with more of a Cheap Trick-ish setting, and it totally works. It's like the Gin Blossoms live attack but in the studio. And the reason it works is cuz of Robin's spot-on powerpop songwriting and pure passionate yet understated vocals, plus their sense of fun. Robin is just great and he seems to not be able to do any wrong moves, classic!!
There are at LEAST 3 classic tunes here: "In Between Two Worlds", "Quitter" and "Tonight Won't Let Me Wander", and all the others are almost in the same excellent realm. I also rally dig "Circus Of Stars" and the way it changes form mid-song without losing any melody or momentum, quite inventive really, even genius.
Now, here's a tip: there IS a SECOND Gas Giants record out, but not under that name, but the POPPIN WHEELIES!! They sell it here on Amazon.com, but no one seems to know about it here, and that's a shame, because it's CLASSIC ROBIN (Dan and Phil AND Scotty Johnson are on there too)!! It's Robin + his pals doing a Gorillaz-like project, aka a CARTOON, but it's still the same voice and style, like classic Gin Blossoms, the Gas Giants edge, just more powerpop sugar piled on, a VERY good thing. It was produced by Robin, most of the tunes WRITTEN by Robin, along with 3 Tommy Keene covers (attention powerpop enthusiasts), including a killer "Places That Are Gone"!! Imagine ROBIN WILSON SINGING "PLACES THAT ARE GONE" (with Scotty Johnson on lead guitar), and believe me, it's as drop-dead amazing as you would imagine. TOTALLY cool!! Sooo, order this Gas Giants record AND the Poppin Wheelies CD (and Jesse's solo record, "Tunes Young People Will Enjoy"), and you are set!!
Robin rules, what can I say?? Helluva nice guy too...
FBTBB Rocks! 5 Stars!!.......2001-02-21
As a longtime fan of Gin Blossoms and Robin Wilson, I bought the CD as soon as it came out. I LOVE it! I think it has a great diversity of styles; a cool mix. Great rockers, classic pop tunes, everything a music lover can want. Robin's impeccible vocal style is in fine form. I give FBTBB 5 stars!

Customer Reviews:
A good collection.......2007-05-14
Unlike the huge names, collections by Allen are not many - plenty of his opera performances are recorded, but there are only a few collections. My voice teacher recommended I listen to him to understand better how to deliver power without weight, something we've been working on. Yes, it's all in English, but that's fine, and the quality of Allen's instrument comes through very well.
A Musician of Great Dignity and Style.......2005-07-27
Sir Thomas Allen is one of the enduring baritones who has been able to move throughout the operatic repertoire and the recital stage with intelligence, informed characterization, and immaculate musicianship. To have a recording of some of the roles he has inhabited at this point in his career is a gift (this CD was recorded in 2003). To have the added challenge of retaining the stature of the roles while sung in English translations at the request of Chandos is a credit to his abilities and communicative powers.
English is a difficult language to make musical, though saying that abruptly is countered by the fact that some of the most beautiful operas in history are by Benjamin Britten, a composer who truly understood his native tongue and kept it as fluid as the soaring melodies he wrote, as Thomas Allen proves here in 'Billy in the Darbies' from Britten's 'Billy Budd'. It is the other major arias from Korngold to Wagner to Tchaikovsky to Rossini, Bizet, Mozart, Gounod, Verdi, Thomas, Strauss, and Lehar that Allen proves that English translations do not detract at all from the performances!
For those purists who prefer opera sung in the original language (and for those who don't even need supertitles in the opera house!), then this recording may provide a temporary barrier to respecting Allen's singing. But once caught up in the ease with which he moves from style to style and comedy to drama, it is hard not to relinquish old preferences and not be wholly impressed with the beauty of the voice and the warmth and dignity of this fine musician. Highly recommended. Grady Harp, July 05
Passed the "Opera in English" test with flying colors........2005-07-04
For me, the test here was Figaro's Cavatina, from Rossini's Barber of Seville - sung in English, as is this entire compilation of 14 operatic favorites, sung by baritone Sir Thomas Allen. Could he pull it off? Could Chandos pull it off? The answer is an unequivocal, unqualified yes! The secret in singing classics in English, that were written and scored in another language, is in three things: pacing, vocal agility and appreciation for "fit", and what greater test for tongue and timing than Figaro? When you listen to this one song, you will understand why Chandos and its benefactor, Sir Peter Moores have such a passion for their Opera in English series. Sir Allen's voice is a matured unmistakably settled baritone voice that contains a lifetime's worth of understanding of the music and words he imparts through his magnificent delivery. For example, when he sings, Tchaikovsky's "You have my love and devotion" from The Queen of Spades, he delivers a smooth and deeply emotional rendition that lacks nothing in translation. Wagner's "Turning my gaze upon this proud assembly", from Tannhäuser is another example of how fine, full orchestration behind a seasoned voice that waxes eloquent with every phrase, can create a mood of relaxed familiarity with word and music, that may be lacking when sung in another tongue. Great Operatic Arias, serves up a smorgasbord of tunes that are familiar, made more so by the care and attention given to creating a place for the Opera in English series in every home library. The mood here is romantic, relaxed and with few exceptions consistent throughout. If you haven't heard Opera in English, this might be a good way to start, given the fact that the listener gets to sample how different composers might sound in other than German, Italian or French. You might be surprised to discover that when done with care, as is obviously the case here, the sound is about as good as it gets. As an added bonus, the booklet that comes with the CD is full of pictures, libretto in English, and biography that gives us a good insight into history of the singer and his identifying rolls.

Magnificent performances by a legendary baritone.......2005-02-17
I agree with most of what was said in the previous review of this album, with one difference. Except for the 1941 recordings (and there are only 4 of them here), this is indeed Warren in prime dramatic form. The "Rigoletto" excerpts here compare favorably with his 1950 complete recording, and the cuts from "Trovatore" are remarkably similar to the same arias on his 1952 complete version.
Unlike Tibbett, whose singing was more sharply declamatory and intrinsically "inward-looking" in the presentation of his characters, Warren's genius lay in giving a well-defined character within the parameters of what the composer wrote. Indeed, except for the "Largo al factotum" here, one rarely hears Warren break the legato flow or over-hold high notes as many baritones since have done. Perhaps, to some ears, this is not "dramatic," but it was what attracted Toscanini to select him as his Rigoletto in 1943. Like his vocal coach, Giuseppe de Luca, Warren drew his character with fine shadings and coloration of the voice, much like his successor Sherrill Milnes, though Milnes lacked the metallic ring of Warren and Tibbett.
My biggest disappointment here was Jan Peerce's Don Alvaro in the "Forza" duet. He sings with accuracy, good tone and vocal heft, but there is no feeling of the tortured charatcer here, as one heard from Martinelli, Masini, Gregorian or Tucker at his best.
The transfers sound a bit dated because they include a great deal of the original 78-rpm surface noise, but with it they give us the full sound of Warren's voice. I always loved these recordings because, unlike his mono complete recordings, there was more "space" around the voice, and a voice as big as Warren's sometimes sounded a bit cramped or congested when the soundspace was too dry. In short, a valuable collection for those who already love Warren as well as those who have never heard him.
