Album Description

Crossing The Line is a labor of love. It's about two guys having fun, adding totally free improvistions between several selections. Larry Combs and Eddie Daniels are legendary masters of their craft. Combs, aside from being one of the best orchestral clarinetists in the world, is a fine jazz player. He played with Chuck Mangione before joining the Chicago Symphony.

From "Ponchielli," (featuring the Chicago String Quintet) and the Pleyel duets to Gordon Goodwin's "Leblanc Suite" and William O. Smith's "Jazz Fantasy" this is a serious musical joyride!

5 out of 5 stars GREAT BUY!.......2005-06-24

I recently met Eddie Daniels and Larry Combs at the Oklahoma University Clarinet Symposium and WOW! They are both amazing characters at what they do. First off, Larry Combs is a classical clarinetist who has been Principle Clarinet in the Chicago Symphony since the early 70's. Eddie Daneils is a Jazz Clarinet player, but yet he still plays classical just as well as Larry Combs. Well, Larry and Eddie met eachother at a Clarinet Convention MANY years ago, and since then they have been great friends. These people are LEGENDARY! They will be in the clarinet recording archives probably until the day I die, which will be a looong time. This album is worth the the money, I suggest it for anyone who is a fan of EITHER or BOTH of these fabulous clarinetists. The Duos by Ignaz Pleytel are phenominol! They are beautiful! And whats even funnier is they play noodles, which is unedited made up on the spot music, which makes the whole experience even more interesting because they just follow each other with whatever they can come up with on the spot. Buy this album if you are a clarinetist, you won't regret it!

4 out of 5 stars Something's pounding at my brain........2006-03-01

This particular collection is a cache of major-label psychedelic-pop gems. Practically all of these songs are very obscure and unknown, although the Association had a minor hit with "Pandora's Golden Heebie Jeebies" and Monkees fans will be familiar with "Porpoise Song". You probably never heard any of the other songs here. Most of the songs are pop songs with some of the trappings of psychedelic music. Most of the songs are quite enjoyable, especially if you like '60s pop music. I especially like "Hallucinations" and "Straight Aero". Fans of '60s pop music should enjoy this CD.

5 out of 5 stars Come on in..........2006-02-25

Ok, so here it is... not so much the 5th disc to the original Rhino _Nuggets_ box as maybe its kid brother -- immature, to be certain, with plenty to learn... but irrepressibly charismatic, and despite your quick inclination to banish him from the room, once you've allowed him to stay, his presence enhances the proceedings in ways you never imagined.

AN IMPORTANT NOTE... before you even consider paying what the sh!+$tain dealers are charging for used copies of this now-out-of-print disc, enter the word "nuggets" as a search term on this site, and keep clicking until you find an import with a title (and track lineup) strikingly similar to this one. Kudos to the folks at Rhino not only for compiling these discs, but for having the good taste and sense to torpedo those who seek to imprison great music for monetary gain.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent volume of psych-pop from WEA vaults.......2005-12-26

Producer Andrew Sandoval has pulled together twenty-four superb psych-pop tracks from the WEA vaults, including sides culled from master tapes of Warner, Reprise, Loma, Atco, Valiant, and Cotillion. The focus is on singles, with a few album tracks mixed in, and primarily from artists who were either unknown, or were stepping outside their regular domain for an experimental run down the psychedelic highway. Some of the best known names here are those of the session producers, including Lenny Waronker, Jerry Yester, Don & Phil Everly, Don Adrissi, Jimmy Bowen, Joey Levine, Curt Boettcher, and Richard Perry.

Better known artists, like The Tokens, are represented by sides that step away from their familiar hits, and the one-off singles and rare album tracks explore lesser known sides of the commercial psych boom. Though recorded in proper studios for major labels, these tracks still temper their hit-seeking with a healthy dollop of experimental. The key years of 1966 through 1968 yield an entire program of psych-tinged folk and sunshine rock, heavy on the harmonies and studio craft.

Highlights include the trippy vocals, space sounds and discothèque beat of Baker Knight's "Hallucinations," the raga jangle of Adrian Pride's "Her Name is Melody," the funky "Straight Aero" by Jeff Thomas, the jugband-styled harmonies of MC^2's "My Mind Goes High," the Sgt. Pepper-esque "Lucifer" from future Ohio Express mastermind Joey Levine, and the droning "Hell Will Take Care of Her" from Brass Buttons. Fans of the mid-80s paisley underground, particularly The Rain Parade, early Bangles and Three O'Clock, will find this volume familiar and compelling.

'60s folk fans will want to check out the Curt Boettcher-produced cover of Bob Gibson and Phil Ochs' "That's the Way It's Gonna Be," complete with a variable-speed guitar and backward koto instrumental break. Songwriter Paul Williams' debuts as a performer on The Holy Mackerel's "Wildflowers," complete with Leslie-fied lead vocals, and the original mono single mix of The Monkees' "Porpoise Song" makes it's CD debut. Producer Sandoval lovingly documents each side with details on the band and the circumstances of the track's creation. The insert booklet also includes many photos and label reproductions, and the purpose-built tri-fold digipack features a neat pop-art color wheel. Originally issued by Rhino Handmade as "Hallucinations: Psychedelic Pop Nuggets from the WEA Vaults," this has been reissued with a minor track change in the UK under the title, "My Mind Goes High." 4 out of 5 stars Lovingly remastered soft-sike pop comp.......2004-05-13

You can have too much of a good thing, and there are a lot of psychedelic compilations out there; every small-town high school band who cut an acetate, it seems, are now resurrected as some lost garage fuzz n'frenzy masterpiece-great testament to the teen spirit and the endeavour of record collectors, but rather wearying on even the enthusiastic devotee...So this new comp from the great Nuggets staple (and you know what that means devotion to detail) is a return from the Mid-West to the relative mainstream rock of the day-or rather when the major West Coast studios threw time, money and excessive productions at all manner of beat/folk-rock/ harmony-pop outfits to weird them out for the balmy chart pop environment 1966-'68. Think Strawberry Alarm Clock rather than Elevators and you have the mettle of this expensive looking and beautifully presented trawl of lysergic-candy pop (insert you your own epiphet for this era, I'm sure you have thought of one). Personal choices...aside from the Monkee's gorgeous, absurd Porpoise Song (in a 'lost' mono mix); World Column and the great Lee Mallorey-another artist who only really begins to make sense in hindsight,no?. A lush compilation in more ways than one of material that is now applauded as psychedelic pop but which any self-respecting hippie of the time would have laughed out of court.

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars Urgent Music.......2004-06-12

David Usher's 3rd solo CD builds on his previous two releases and is simply some of the most moving, brilliant music you will hear. Although darker and a bit more of a spark plug, it's Rufus Wainwright that he increasingly reminds me of with his experiment with melody and diverse instrumentation on the arrangements. On the opening title track he sings, "Standing on the top looking down, thought it'd be so damn easy," as the guitars fire with staccato breathiness in the bridge. Five of the tracks on the disc rate classic status, which is an incredible percentage of truly great tracks on any one non-greatest hits release.

On "I'm Coming Down" David as a vocalist expresses such desperate discontent with normalcy as his voice hits the upper registers with an incredibly dramatic music, "I thought you should know that inside I've grown cold, and I fight every day to lose control." "Time of Our Lives" is currently #1 in my own personal top ten. From its opening line, "I once saw a man on fire staring out of his window," we hear the urgency of emotion that is a hallmark of classic Usher and the guitars chime like they were spark plugged from the Allman Brothers, "Who of us will tell what these dark days will bring?" It's a breathtaking track worth the price of the CD. "Message Home" has another startlingly original melody with Usher's piano creating urgency, "If we never try then we'll never take, If we never bend then we'll never break, if we stimulate & we sexualize, will we need it more." The guitars swirl like smoke up a chimney. Another breathtaking track. "Surfacing" is another amazing melody with lyric and vocal creating urgency followed by peace, "The picture perfect life is fading out of view & high above me I can feel the world, but I don't need it, I don't need it, I don't need it ... I just need you." The final hidden live track that's not listed is also incredible. I don't know what to call it other than the first few words of the lyric "Smells on the Air," "Caught in the rage & the fire of things, all the brightness that burns is fumbling through, like a child in the dark, when her nakedness comes, I'm shocked by the color, the glorious weight of your skin comes alive." Usher simply marries melody, lyric, arrangement, powerfully emotional singing, and sterling musicianship on a par with almost no other musician. This is music that is urgent, unique and unforgettable. Seek & you shall find! Bravo!

    3 out of 5 stars Maybe I'm just hallucinating........2004-05-23

Little Songs may have been the title of David Usher's quietly stunning solo debut, but in Hallucinations, his ambitions are revealed to be anything but unassuming.

Less intimate than Little Songs and more ethereal than Morning Orbit, this breathy third offering from the lead singer of cult alt-rock band Moist is a different beast indeed, lacking depth and substance as its title intimates. The squeaky-clean, commercialised compositions and trite emotions that form the core of this narcissistic album will irritate diehard fans while seducing new ones.

Devil By My Side is just plain lazy: it's all ooh oohs, back-up choruses and "believe in hope, believe in faith, believe that hate will never die". Usher says he'd never sung falsetto in public until I'm Coming Down, where he whispers confidingly, "I thought you should know that inside I've grown cold" followed by an unholy wail. Oh, please. There's nothing more pathetic than a 37-year-old man writing angsty teenage poetry in an attempt to seem profound. Especially when said man is capable of better. Much better, as evidenced by the unlisted bonuses which are easily the best tracks on the album: live recordings of earlier efforts Saint Lawrence River, Butterfly and Forestfire.

Flashes of inspired songwriting do compensate somewhat, such as the unreasonably infectious Numb and the urgency of Message Home. His dainty, froufrou rendition of the Manic Street Preachers' If You Tolerate This Your Children Will Be Next makes me wonder: can this really, truly, be the same David Usher who birthed the evocative Saint Lawrence River and the anthemic Push?

    Maybe I'm just hallucinating.

4 out of 5 stars Another great album.......2004-02-06

What I like about David Usher is that, while his albums are never quite the same, he is consistent. This new one is a great follow up to Morning Orbit. It's reflective and poignent. My favourites would have to be "I'm Coming Down", "In This Light" and "Message Home". I agree with others, though, that you may not think much of the album after hearing it a first time, but it just keeps getting better and better with every listen. This is an artist that you must listen to the entire album to really appreciate it.

5 out of 5 stars Gotta love this!.......2003-12-07

Yeah, another review about David Usher. The title track Hallucinations is the first track on the album as well as the opening song for his recent concert which I went to.It's really an aggressively sounding song!As for the rest, what I can say is great. It's well balanced!Too bad this record is currently underrated, hopefully as times goes on,it'll deserve more attention.Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars Ground breaking album!!!.......2003-11-25

This album is some of the best efforts by David Usher so far. His experience and skill at music are evidently clear. A melodic blend of artistic imagery, musicianship and atmosphere. For those looking for pop songs like Morning Orbit, you may disappointed, however this album deserves and second and third listen to really understand and enjoy. I enjoy it more and more with each listen. THis is a deep album with many subtle nuances. With help from Moist band members Kevin and Jeff, this album is a worthy addition to any Moist/Usher fans collection.

4 out of 5 stars This Band's Singer Freaked Me out! ***4 STAR RATING........2003-03-04

The singer for this band has got to have about 5 different personalities inside of him; either that, or his voice is just possessed and decides to change whenever it pleases. First off, I always love it when any power metal/metal band takes off on a concept album based around any great book or in Malmsteen's case, classical music. The Ray Bradbury concept from the book was a great idea; I was hoping for an outcome more like Jag Panzer had with, Thane To The Throne, based on Shakespeare's Macbeth, which I would tell ANYONE who liked this to pick up. The beginning of this CD-only the 1st 3 or 4 songs-seemed to be lacking, and I kept waiting for the band to really take off, which happens after the middle of the CD. The singer goes anywhere from sounding like Bruce Dickinson, to Geoff Tate, to a skriek occasionally in the tradition of Rob Halford, and what freaked me out at the end ... the Fates Warning cover! You can play the Fates Warning version right after the Steel Prophet version, and the vocals sound almost identical: I mean REALLY identical. The music has me twisted: I don't know if I can really call it 'power' metal in the sense of Jag Panzer, Helloween, Iced Earth, Tad Morose, and many others. You won't find any real melodic catches here. I would say their sound is a cross between old Iron Maiden and just plain metal. The guitar solos were not melodic in this sense to me. That would have made this album so much better. I gave it 4 stars for the vocals and concept idea; and after the first 4 tracks it really does jam, so it's worth the price to keep it in your rack, just not a mastepiece-but close. I'll have to check out the more recent releases, because if this band gotten a lot better, you'll see me rating some 5 stars with these guys. Pick this one up, you'll be cranking it when the friends are over drinking beers ... uh ... I mean soda pop! ***4 STAR RATING FROM SCRAGGY'S TOMB OF POWER METAL, USA.

        Customer Reviews:

        5 out of 5 stars Amazing Performance.......2001-07-22

Kristen Wolfe Jensen is an amazing musical talent. This CD showcases her ability to perform any piece of music with a sensitivity and musical understanding that is just genius. Having attended many of her solo recitals in the Austin area, I can say that the way she plays on this CD is the way she plays live: ith complete mastery of the instrument. She is not afraid to play with passion, something that is lacking on many bassoon recordings. Her tone is rich and has a depth I have yet to hear from more famous contemporaries with larger record labels. Buy this CD even if your not a bassoon player, for it is just inspiring music, and inspiring to listen to, largely due to the woman playing.
