Having pulled often-stellar duty in both genres for many a year, film-scoring vet Alan Silvestri should know if the show-biz adage that drama is easy, it's comedy that's hard is true. For the Brad Pitt/Julia Roberts comic-romantic adventure The Mexican (the title refers to an antique pistol that must be smuggled back across the border), Silvestri taps a little of his recent history--and some sage genre insight--to conjure up a breezy, playful score that evokes everything from Leone's Dollars trilogy and traditional Mexican folk music to pastoral jazz flourishes and club kitsch. But a decidedly Morricone-meets-Bacharach sensibility prevails throughout, with the composer often lovingly tweaking the familiar banjo, harmonica, and choral clichés of the spaghetti Western into music that is refreshing even as it is strangely familiar. A handful of pop songs adds another layer of loopiness to the proceedings--especially the remix of Men Without Hats' chestnut from the early 1980s, "The Safety Dance," and the sprightly "El Cable" by Mexican exotica master Esquivel. --Jerry McCulley

5 out of 5 stars Ennio Morricone or Alain Silvestri.......2004-06-11

Alain Silvestri did a great job. He choose the songs' melodies sounds like the Spagetti Western Movies' great composer Ennio Morricone's unforgettable Spagetti Western movie themes. The Main Title and The Mexican songs are the great example ones. Also "Where is my staff" too. "Thieves" is another one of the greatest. And list goes on.. I love Ennio's songs that's why i love this soundtrack. If you love Ennio's stuffs too this soundtrack give you all you need.
Many of the soundtracks don't have every songs. So you have to find the other songs anywhere. For God's shake The Mexican is not an example oof this. This is not just a Soundtrack. IT'S a SCORE and a SOUNDTRACK. You can find the MOVIE SONGS and THE OTHER lyrical songs in this soundtrack. This is it's other plus too.

3 out of 5 stars A complement to the movie which does not stand alone so well.......2002-05-27

I thought the sound track to the movie was a great complement to it but after I bought it I felt that it did not stand up by itself very well. Its themes seemed too short and disjointed. But, I plan to play it on my CD player in random mode along with other CD's. Then I think it can complement the music it is interspersed with - depending on the music.

      4 out of 5 stars soundtrack , the mexcian.......2001-04-22

the starting theme song, is the my all time favourite, watch the movie, and u'll know y.

4 out of 5 stars Great Soundtrack for a good movie.......2001-03-06

The Soundtrack for "The Mexican" is not necessarily one of the greatest soundtracks ever made, but it does capture the essence of the movie. The distinguishable guitar plucks and the internitten catchy songs are great. Overall...if you liked the movie, you should like the soundtrack.

      5 out of 5 stars Hot Fun.......2001-03-06

Hot Fun is the best way to describe the soundtrack to The Mexican. It's fast paced, boisterous, and makes for great listening on any type of trip. Be prepared for drives to the grocery store to become a lot more exciting! The mix of vocal and instrumental selections add to the versatility of the disk and give it a unique flavor. Even if you haven't seen the movie, this CD would be a great addition to any CD collection!

5 out of 5 stars Much more than just one good reason.......2007-03-14

...to pick up this CD! Recently I was at a book and music shop in Louisville and they were clearing out their cassettes. That was where I got my copy of One Good Reason, which I actually got for my gf because she likes Don't Shed a Tear. After a listen or two however, I stole the tape back from her, and I've listened to it everyday since. This album is nothing short of brilliant. I'm not even a fan of mainstream pop, but this album is so incredibly good, it's irresistable.

      1. One Good Reason - The title track. Has an amazing groove. The song is dark, but somehow uplifting. I think he uses some kind of tympani, or at least a synthesized tympani to get that sound on the main riff.

      2. When You Walk In the Room - This is actually a remake, I read off of the Carrack website, and it is the only song Paul plays off this album in concert currently, which is a shame. I don't know who the female singer on this song is, but boy is she strong. The harmonies are brilliant here. This song has an amazing key change that makes for a very nice build up just before the finish.

      3. Button off My Shirt - A nice, mid-tempo bubblegum chewer, but don't mistake it, Paul sings in full soulfulness in that range only he can hit.

      4. Give me a Chance - Tearjerker. Slow with keys. One of the most amazing ballads I've ever heard.

      5. Double It Up - My personal favorite song on this album and one of my favorite songs ever. It reminds you of The Heat Is On by the tempo, and the riff is a bit like the Police's Demolition Man, but that doesn't ruin it for me at all. This song would be great in an action movie, maybe during the opening credits. The whole thing is an adrenaline rush. I've tried to sing it many times but it's way too high. On this number, Paul demonstrates an ability to drive the song, to be bluesy and soulful, and have power at the top of his range, all at the same time. The guitars are excellent in this song, as are the horns, but I suspect they are synthesized.

      6. Don't Shed A Tear - It's a priveledge to say that this is one of the weaker songs on the album, but it's still a good song. No further comment needed here, this was a major hit in the US.

      7. Fire With Fire - This is a great song. I thought, from a songwriter's perspective, that it was clever how they went into that bridge section just before the refrain. That really set it up nicely.

      8. Here I Am - Kind of a fast shuffle beat number. This is one of those songs that you wish you knew the lyrics to so you could really try hard to hit those notes, even though you probably don't have a shot in hell. A very singable, danceable upbeat happy song.

      9. Collrane - If I'm not mistaken, Collrane is a woman's first name. I've never heard it over here in the US, maybe it's popular over in Europe. This song is sort of dark, but has an epic feel - a tour de force for the band. If I'd written it, I would have included more tension and had more solos to try for a Stairway to Heaven effect, but as it is, which is somewhat short and sweet, the power and gravity of the emotions are fully there. The bass groove is really cool here, too. The echo on the drums was a nice touch. The whole thing screams of intrigue!

      10. Figure in Your Life - If this song doesn't bring a tear to your eye, you have no soul. This is a question I think every man has asked a woman, in some way, at some time. This is where PC really shines: he has a knack for finding that little dark spot in your heart and putting it into the right song with the right lyrics.

I guess that about does it for my long-winded review. I can't speak highly enough about the album. It's too bad you can't get it on iTunes and there are no samples here. Maybe you can find CDs out there somewhere. Suburban Voodoo was on CD, this should be too, if it isn't.

5 out of 5 stars More than One Good Reason to Listen.......2006-02-12

OK...your musical body of work already includes, but not limited to singing the hits Ace- How Long, Solo- I Need You, Squeeze- Tempted, and Mike the Mechanics- Silent Running. What's next? An excellent CD that should have raised the bar several levels. One Good Reason seems hard to locate these days. It includes his top ten hit Don't Shed a Tear and the other top 40 chart hit One Good Reason. There is more, Fight Fire with Fire and Button Off My Shirt were worthy. There are a few ballads here too. Give Me a Chance and (Do I Figure)in Your Life are a nice touch. This still gets much play on my player.

Paul did a promo tour visiting radio stations to promote this one. He was a great guy. Very nice and was happy to talk music. The disc should have been bigger. Thinking back to those days, I think the "hair spray" bands were the deal and those bands got the MTV play. Could have been a factor, I don't know. This is good pop music.

I haven't "shed a tear" for Paul. Among his peers, he is known as an excellent musician. He has played with many of the greats. Nick Lowe, Roxy Music, The Pretenders, The Smiths, and Elton John to name a few of his credits.

His Mike and the Mechanics career and his solo works still continues through today. I have his DVD, and it contains none of these selections. Not sure why, but buy that DVD and find this CD. Good music. This is a fine way to begin the Paul Carrack story or expand on it.

3 out of 5 stars Carrack's Voice Redeems These Pop Numbers.......2005-09-12

Pop production from the late 80s with R&B influences on the sleeve. I love Carrack's smooth voice. If anyone else sang these numbers, I probably wouldn't like it, but Carrack woos me into that simple, up-beat state of mind.

      Customer Reviews:

      4 out of 5 stars What fun!.......2001-02-05

The liner notes on this CD state that Hesperus chose to mix the styles of early and traditional music "for no good reason at all." The result is a mix of medieval-Renaissance music with traditional American music that is truly delightful. The three members of Hesperus play a diverse group of traditional and modern instruments and their choice of instruments on particular songs is as interesting as the choice of the songs that they blended together. The music is crisp and clear showing that the members know their music and their instruments. Dr. Tina Chancey is an expert on early music, while Scott Reiss is a graduate student studying ethnomusicology. All three members are experienced recording artists. The only (minor) drawback to this album is that Bruce Hutton, the solo vocalist, is excellent on some music, but seems a little bland on the blues tunes. Unlike more "authentic" recordings of traditional/historical music, this CD provides insight into the evolution of music and into (perhaps) into the shared motivation of musicians through time. In any case, the sheer joy contained in the music makes this CD a lot of fun!!

              Album Description

"No one listens to an Ad Frank CD to hear about him getting lucky," one of his fans was overheard saying. From his past releases people expect Ad Frank to wallow in self-pity and self-loathing, albeit with a sense of black humor. So what's a fan to expect when hearing the lighthearted "Dumb Trilemma" or the upbeat "Girls as Sharp as You are Something Rare" from his third solo album, In Girl Trouble? Don't worry, there's still plenty of melancholy to go around on this follow-up to the acclaimed Mr. Fancypants (the CD is entitled In Girl Trouble after all), but this time Ad's managed to have a little fun too. "When I set out to write the songs for In Girl Trouble, I decided that I wasn't going to make another album that was brooding or self-pitying," says Ad, "I thought I succeeded, but after I first played the songs with my new band, The Fast Easy Women, I stopped for a minute and said, 'These songs aren't dark enough,' the band just burst into laughter." The band can be forgiven for laughing at the fact that songs like "Jet Aircraft" with its lamenting chorus of "I lost my love and no one's going to love me again" or the dour, "I hope for more than I can give back/Something fine in me has died," from the otherwise upbeat "You Have Murdered Something Fine in Me" weren't dark enough. And then there's the opening line from "Goodbye Cruel Girl": "One subway ride and a clearing out of my bank account/I leave all of this and forget what all of the fuss was about." Fans needn't worry that Ad's completely changed his attitude, it's just that now he's a little more well-adjusted.

5 out of 5 stars Number One in a Better World.......2005-11-30

In a perfect world, a world where musical taste ruled and merit, not moolah, drove the pop charts, Ad Frank would be selling out stadiums. He makes fun addictive, pop that is smart but not self-indulgent, complex but not complicated, and generally better than all those sad sacks and neutered punks on your MTV. It's tight four-piece rock with some synths here and there, and gleefully depressing lyrics (just look at the song titles) dished out in Frank's distinctive, articulately barbed voice. This album is his most immediately accessible - both the recent 'world's best ex-boyfriend' and the earlier 'mr. fancypants' are little more jagged and, in the case of the former, a bit downtempo. But don't worry, you'll buy them once you've listened through this album and find yourself needing to know more about this embarassingly clever songwriter.

5 out of 5 stars Shimmering narcissistic pop.......2004-04-07

It's gorgeous, it's silly, it's sweet, and it's got enough crunch to kick a little ass. Sparks, Bryan Ferry, Ad Frank. I just wish I'd seen his live show featuring Jacque Brel tunes.
