About the Artist
John Schoenberger, Adult Album Alternative editor of Radio & Records, put it best: "Tom Sheehan is an artist that you need to know about."

Songwriter Tom Sheehan is to popular music what director Oliver Stone is to film. Tom's evocative songs find their roots in the news, human relationships and the world around us. His writing is emotional and insightful, casting new light on familiar events, people and issues. And while certainly not the first to fuse social commentary with rock music, Tom does so from a unique perspectivean insightful point of view tempered by experience.

Not surprisingly, Tom's 19 North Records releases, Film at Eleven (2000) and Where You Are (1998), are not your typical pop music fare, blending hook-laden music with evocative, cinematic lyrics.

Progressive radio has embraced both Film at Eleven and Where You Are. At Adult Rock (AAA) and Major College Radio, both records gained wide acceptance with over 120 Adult Album Alternative (AAA) and Major College radio stations playing the albums.

At Adult Contemporary (A/C) radio, the single from Film at Eleven, "It's Only Love" was the #2 Most Added song on the FMQB-A/C chart in its first week of releasereaching #34 on FMQB's A/C chart (the only independent label record on the chart) and #17 on the CMJ/New Music Weekly A/C chart.

Additionally, Where You Are, spawned two AAA radio hits: "Die Like Elvis," an infectious Memphis-blues rocker, and the ethereal title track which grew out of the O.J. Simpson murder trial.

The trade press has heaped critical praise on Sheehan, as well. Dave Einstein, writing in the influential radio industry trade magazine, Gavin, said, "Sheehan's cinematic approach to the music is what makes it [Film at Eleven] stand out. Each song is like a screenplay&well-crafted&melodic." Album Network, another important industry magazine, said "Just like the nightly news, Tom Sheehan delivers." And The Friday Morning Quarterback said, "Like a painter, Tom Sheehan uses his words and music to let you see the big picture. "It's Only Love' is not your typical pop song, but that's what makes it stand out. But perhaps Sheehan's greatest gift is his ability to write without mincing any words. Don't over look this one."

Live, Tom's solo acoustic performances present an intimate experience of the songs on Where You Are and Film at Eleven and are in many ways even more powerful than the studio versions, with stripped down treatments that bring his insightful, and often chilling, lyrics to the forefront.

He is most at home, though, as a writer...an artist with a gifted vision...and a unique view of the world...an artist that you need to know about.

The idea of remaking the Rat Pack's infamous shaggy-dog story cum Vegas heist thriller may have seemed ludicrous without a Rat Pack. But that didn't deter ever-inventive director Steven Soderbergh, who's again wisely teamed with not only Out of Sight star George Clooney, but that underrated project's Irish-born club mixer turned scorer David Holmes, as well. The resulting soundtrack is a spunky, cross-cultural joyride that careens from Perry Como's "Papa Loves Mambo" to the loopy hip-hop of Handsome Boy Modeling School's "The Projects," while paying some gratifying visits to Percy Faith, Arthur Lyman, Quincy Jones, the terminally cool Claude Debussy, and, of course, King Elvis along the way. Holmes's own concoctions are as smartly retro-hip and seamless, slyly intertwining cool jazz-funk and smoky cine-Muzak with some dance-floor grooves that keep the musical tension boiling. The sharp dialogue snippets that bubble throughout seem a quirky throwback to soundtracks gone by, a sometimes oversized olive in Holmes's inviting musical cocktail. --Jerry McCulley

3 out of 5 stars If you really want the music...........2007-07-04

DAVID HOLMES made a name with this soundtrack, and to get his name out, he sent out a PROMO COPY for the OSCAR race. now, i don't normally recommend downloading music but it IS ILLEGAL to buy this CD as it was not intended to be bought. i am lucky to OWN it as i bought it on EBAY it its THE ENTIRE SCORE - NO DIALOGE. Its less then 45 mins in length and has 35 tracks if i am not mistaken. it worth getting. my friend have downloaded it off of TORRENTRACTOR or TORRENTSPY and i recommend you do that, plus add the tracks you get here and make a COMPLETE soundtrack. that what i did.

5 out of 5 stars Dialogue helped and hurt........2007-05-21

I understand why some listeners are frustrated that the film's dialogue was included with some of the tracks. For the most part, I enjoy how it brings back memories of this very clever film. But there are times where I wish I didn't have to hear it. Wouldn't it be nice if this was produced like the musical instrument lesson books with CD's that have one set of songs as solo and one set of songs with accompaniment? I'd love that choice. Funny, though, how I never notices some of the background music in scenes. I love those old songs, and would love to be able to have those songs without dialogue. All in all, I am satisfied with this CD. I am glad I knew ahead of time that this was produced so "uniquely".

4 out of 5 stars Oceans Eleven Soundtrack.......2007-05-13

Some songs are a mix of lines and music (mostly moments) from the movie. There are several uninterrupted music only selections. The songs fall in chronological order and all have the same modern, funk. My personal favorite is the rap song (which also has a heavy amount of funk)which is shown in the movie just as Brad Pitt's character is introduced and giving his poker classes. It's funky without being hard or uninteligible. Also, the music played while the heist is being completed is a funky, hip victory song. Great background party music.

4 out of 5 stars For the Circus Animals!.......2007-04-13

i don't want to write an over analyzed review of this soundtrack But what i do want to say is if you're looking to hear the same great music that you heard in the movie& music that made you look this CD up in the first place...you've got it here! you will be able to draw visuals of the movie while listening to it. from Brad Pitt's bar lounge scene to the ending scene in front of the fountain in Vegas...don't over analyze this CD...it's fun and contains all the great tunes from the movie!!! if you're a fan of the Ocean's movies...but this CD!!!

3 out of 5 stars Okay, but..........2007-01-10

I would have preferred not to have the dialogue mash into the tracks. It's typical of Soderbergh soundtracks, and I don't mind the dialogue being there, I'd just prefer it on its own tracj (like, say, the Snatch soundtrack).

The pop song-score is often accused of being little more than ancillary merchandising for many a film and the supporting evidence is often hard to deny. But this well-chosen collection of modern rock and metal for director Jonathan Hensleigh's adaptation of the vengeance-obsessed Marvel Comics anti-hero is a gratifying exception; apt sonic seasoning for the film's bleak, contemporary edge. The thrash of Hatebreed, Chevelle, and the new Drowning Pool lineup and tracks by more established acts like Puddle of Mudd, Nickelback, and Queens of the Stone Age (who turn in a smart, chunky cover of Romeo Void's Rock-of-the-80's staple, "Never Say Never") alone would make it a welcome rock-metal sampler. But its 19 tracks also encompass an intriguing range of lesser known bands and one-off collaborations (Seether and Amy Lee, Jerry Cantrell and Damageplan, Ben Moody/Jason Miller/Jason "Gong" Jones); all bristling with a dark, moody energy that perfectly echos the film's dour, relentlessly violent tone. -- Jerry McCulley

5 out of 5 stars An Instant Classic Compilation.......2006-02-19

Anyone questioning whether or not to add this album to their collection need only look at the back of the case. With a role call that boasts an enormous amount of talent, this album delivers hard hitting rock and insightful lyrics that give it depth. It is rare to find an album that not only has great music for a listener who wants some music and also lyrics for those who enjoy looking a little deeper into their music. From Hatebreed to Smile Empty Soul, this CD covers all ranges of emotion and never disappoints!

5 out of 5 stars Perfect Punisher Sound.......2005-12-07

The songs on this album are just the type of music you think of when you think "The Punisher". Even if you haven't seen the movie, but love the sound of rock, this is one of the best albums you can get that comes with a nice variety of artists. If you are a fan of The Punisher movie and or comics, this is definitely a can't miss soundtrack. As is the Original Score to the film...

5 out of 5 stars Powerful music!.......2005-09-20

I was actually more attracted to The Punisher by the music coming from the soundtrack than the actual movie. In fact, I was a little disappointed that the music wasn't more prominently featured in the movie.

The bands and the songs selected for the soundtrack are all so energizing and powerful. I could hardly believe that the collection was so good - not a weak song in the bunch. Give it a listen, and you'll be smiling and rockin' too!

3 out of 5 stars measuring up (now 4 stars instead of 3...).......2005-08-26

Technically, this isn't my second review of the product; it's just me taking my original review and completely rewriting it. Quite frankly, as time went on and I heard other Marvel-based movie soundtracks, I started to realize just how good The Punisher's soundtrack is. With the ultimate combination of rock and... more rock, Punisher contends for best soundtrack I've ever heard. A few of the standout tracks for me (not in order of how much I like them, but in how they appear [for the most part] on the CD) are:

Drowning Pool- Step Up: Now, if you've read my review of Desensitized, by Drowning Pool (the album this song came off of), you would have heard me mention that I love this song, but it just isn't really Drowning Pool due to the lack of Dave Williams in the song. I stand by that thought, although I do still really like this song.

Nickelback- Slow Motion: I'm pretty well impressed with this particular song, but not as much as I am with some of the other songs on this soundtrack. It's got its merits, though, mainly cause it's Nickelback...

Seether (feat. Amy Lee)- Broken: Damned if I can't label this the best damn song on here. With Seether and frontman Shaun Morgan's ex-girlfriend Amy Lee (of Evanescence fame) as the backing vocalist, this song is both hard-hitting and haunting at the same time. If you've heard this particular song, you know what I mean.

Smile Empty Soul- Finding Myself: I also call this one "Smile Empty Soul Goes Acoustic"- and amazingly enough, alternative rock band Smile Empty Soul's first all-acoustic song works like a charm and is one of my favorites.

Trapt- Lost in a Portrait: In my opinion, Lost in a Portrait isn't as good as some of Trapt's other songs, but it's still a good one and a good pick for the soundtrack; I believe this one was recorded specifically for the soundtrack, as I couldn't find this one on either Trapt or Someone in Control...

Seether- Sold Me: Seether's second contribution to the compilation; like Broken, this one comes from Seether's (semi)second CD, Disclaimer II, a reworking of their debut cut Disclaimer. This one is much more hard-edged than Broken, but not necessarily better... it is good though.

Edgewater- Eyes Wired Shut: Tied with Broken for the best song on here. I love how Edgewater so succintly draws you in with the first hook of the chorus- "Eyes wired shut, running through my brain..." Awesome song, guys.

Hatebreed- Bound to Violence: A bit more heavy metal-ish than I'm used to, but I got used to this and actually started to like it. Hatebreed (and more particularly, this song) is what got me listening to bands like Lamb of God and Chimaira, so thanks.

Mark Collie- In Time: By far the most haunting songs on the soundtrack and one of my favorites. Go Mark!!!

Most people would expect me to end this with some kind of witty saying to aid you in making your decision to further research this product- but I'm just too damn tired. So here it goes: The Punisher is frankly one of the best movie soundtracks out there, so go check it out- you won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Mass Attraction.......2005-07-07

I too, was pleasantly surprised by the lesser-known alterna-hard-rock acts on this disc (Trapt, Finger Eleven, Submersed). Along with Span's 2004 2CD masterpiece "Mass Distraction," this is one of the best guitar-driven experiences of the last year-AND that's saying something for a soundtrack to a movie!

4 out of 5 stars Not just another 'various artists' movie soundtrack.......2007-02-06

Never would I think pop-rock young-ins Hanson would ever be on the same as soundtrack as the punk sounds of Punchline.

But think again-- it actually happened. Except this time, Hanson is playing music at a decent age.

I've got to give credit to the music directors of the National Lampoon's Van Wilder: The Rise of Taj soundtrack, for the diversity is far and wide. And that's what makes the cd shine--it doesn't contain just one type of music.

"Get Steady," the first track and movie single is performed by Jonny Lives!. In addition to the single, the music video, starring Van Wilder lead actor Kal Penn, is directed by movie itself.

I remember hearing Everclear in a classmate's presentation in the fourth grade. The band, which has been around since 1992, has clearly made somewhat of a comeback, for their single "Hater" is a catchy pop/rock tune that is clearly made for today's youth. They impressed me, and hopefully my fourth-grade pal, by their sudden jump back into the rock scene.

More than anything, I was extremely satisfied that indie/pop band The Starlight Mints has finally received some recognition for their creative songs. Their new song, "Eyes of the Night," is featured both in the movie and off of their April album release "Drowaton." They, too, provide a catchy tune for both the movie and soundtrack.

Other songs such as The Lashes' "Pop Song," The Exies' "Different Than You," and The Alternative Routes' "Aftermath" all show their alternative rock style while tunes such as The Ordinary Boys' "Boys Will Be Boys" has a fast-paced ska-like melody to it.

The Skies of America also makes an appearance on the album with "Shine," a more low-key and relaxing catchy pop song. If the songs weren't diverse enough, the last track on the cd features The Tossers' "Buckets of Beer," an Irish-sounding track which sounds like they have a touch of Flogging Molly.

Though I've never been a fan of Van Wilder movies, the soundtrack is giving me an alternative look into the making of the movie. It's intriguing and might actually incline me to see the actual full movie.

William Makepeace Thackery's mid-19th-century meditation on the boundaries of class and gender gets a smartly sympathetic remake via Indian director Mira Nair and Reese Witherspoon, who imbues the story's social-climbing Becky Sharp with some of the same spunky spirit the actress brought to Legally Blonde's equally ambitious Elle. Composer Mychael Danna furthers that sense of era-bridging drama with an orchestral score that sets the story's time and place via effective pastiches of Schubert and Beethoven (that's Danna himself channeling a little Ludwig van on the evocative solo piano passages "Andante" and "Adagio"), yet often fuses them seamlessly with a modern sensibility that helps story's contemporary parallels resonate all the more. The soundtracks four songs revolve around poles of Romantic-era evocations (Danna's stately adaptations of Lord Byron's sonnet "She Walks in Beauty" and the standard "Great Adventurer") and the lively East Asian rhythms of Hakim's "El Salaam" and Mahadevan/Sharma's sprightly duet, "Gori Re." But Danna's masterful infusion of 19th century classical Romanticism with the dry, postmodern instincts of the 21st are the score's most compelling achievements, music that argues that while times and mores have changed, the human spirit remains as stubborn as ever. --Jerry McCulley

3 out of 5 stars tis a chick flick.......2006-05-22

Vanity Fair..A feast for the eyes...and hardly a true period piece! SO the music is a bit out of sync...It is still fabulous and for the musical snobs..I too happen to a VERY learned "chantuese".. and in my opinion Custer Larues'. Crimson petal is anything But wimpy...It is meant to be whispery..and provocative..there is nothing uncertain at all about it...MUCH control there..!
Becky Sharp is a character that many women adore because she is STRONG and ruthless! Who cares if the movie was not dead on accurate..It was truly enjoyable...ANd I loved it!

3 out of 5 stars Crimson Petal - historical correctness.......2005-11-13

I did like this movie... but I'm not going to pretend that it stuck to the book or was even remotely historically correct. I loved the song "Now sleeps the crimson petal," but I did want to clear up some things about it. I've been looking for the sheet music and it doesn't appear to exist. There are about 7 people who have written songs based on Tennyson's poem, but this version was written by Mychael Danna, does not even closely resemble Roger Quilter or Robert Young. Mychael Danna did nearly the entire soundtrack and he is wonderful. I just wish i could find the sheet music.

4 out of 5 stars Now sleeps the crimson petal..........2005-08-10

Why bother about historical accuracy at all? The scene where Becky sings "Now sleeps the crimson petal" is probably the most memorable and moving scene of the whole film. I loved it.

4 out of 5 stars Indeed -- Crimson Petal in -what- year?.......2005-04-03

I very much enjoyed the soundtrack (much, much more than the movie) for what it was -- some beautifully done music. I don't know enough about composition to relate different styles to different periods (my knowledge goes about as far as "dissonant=modern"), but I -do- know literature, and just want to note that "Now Sleeps the Crimson Petal" is a poem by Alfred, Lord Tennyson, published in 1847 -- which would be WELL after Becky Sharpe sung it in the movie, even with all the bizarre time-jumping going on in it. This in no way diminishes the song's beauty, and I love the poem for itself -- but just wanted to add a few grains of salt to the historical accuracy of the soundtrack, which remains, to my ear, quite beautiful.

A further quirk to me was the "Salaam" song, which is sung in Arabic. Still enjoyable (though it made NO SENSE in the movie), but I feel it's worth noting that it's not any dialect of Indian.

3 out of 5 stars Crimson Petal in WHAT YEAR?.......2005-02-21

As a retired professional classical musician, I have strong attitudes about music. I greatly enjoyed this film version of Vanity Fair, and think Reese Witherspoon was wonderful, as were most of the actors. The music, though, was odd to say the least. For me the "Crimson Petal" song (and the whole movie scene in which it was heard) was a low point, because the song was obviously from the late twentieth century or the early twenty-first, and did not belong in the movie at all. I suspect that the reason the moviemakers got away with this is that with the general decline in interest in classical music, nobody knows any more what kind of music came from which era. Well, I think I do know - though I am ready to stand corrected if someone can explain that there really was a song from the Napoleonic era that had all this chromaticism, etc. in it. I did appreciate the fact that when Becky Sharp/Reese Witherspoon was supposed to be singing, her voice was rather wimpy and uncertain; it would not have been believable to have her singing with fabulous line and breath support. I agree with the other reviewer that Sissel's "She Walks In Beauty" was a high point.
I suggest that people might look into real period song collections and skip the movie music in this instance.

    Album Description

Ann Arbor, Michigan, seems an unlikely site for the establishment of a major avant-garde festival that would shake the new-music community. Tucked away in America's heartland, the city is equally removed from the Eastern metropolises whose artists pride themselves on sensing the pulse of the times, and from the nonconformist West Coast. Yet during the 1960s Ann Arbor played host to one of the most extraordinary adventures in American music history: the annual ONCE Festival and its nexus of related activities.

The primary aim of ONCE's founders--Robert Ashley, Gordon Mumma, George Cacioppo, Roger Reynolds, and Donald Scavarda--was to create a forum for the presentation of cutting-edge music. To this end they were phenomenally successful. Performers and composers--whether little-known or renowned--embraced the endeavor, demanding almost nothing in return. Perhaps most important, however, ONCE acted as a creative stimulus for its organizers. Scavarda describes the adventure as an explosion of pent-up energy: "Suddenly we could write anything we wanted and have it heard." And they did. The ONCE composers--and many guest artists--wrote a host of new works, some experimental, others more traditional.

What united the ONCE composers was their exploration of sound, whether through the medium of extended techniques on traditional instruments, electronic (or electronically modified) timbres, or the intersection of musical sounds with those of the environment.

A major slice of ONCE's rich musical legacy--35 works constituting six hours of music--is presented here, almost all for the first time. These pieces are as diverse in style as they are compelling in expression. This landmark set, the most comprehensive document ever released of this legendary event, is an opportunity for anyone interested in contemporary music to hear history in the making. Included in the set is a 140-page booklet with a lengthy scholarly essay by musicologist and biographer Leta Miller and numerous rare photos of ONCE personages and performances.

        Album Description

Songwriter Tom Sheehan's new 19 North Records release, "Film at Eleven," is not your typical pop music fare. The follow-up to his critically acclaimed debut, "Where You Are," "Film at Eleven" chronicles a life of hope, tempered by the reality that experience brings.

"Black Ice," the first single from "Film at Eleven," speaks in the first person about addiction, but in terms of its impact on a relationship: "Baby, for the life of me, I don't know why you stay," is the opening line.

"Coup d'état" presents an Oliver Stone "ish" take on the Kennedy Assassination. And the album's most chilling moment is "On the Inside," a spooky, frightening song about the Columbine tragedy in Colorado. The final line of the song, which comes at the conclusion of an eery David Cullen guitar solo, will leave you positively shaken.

Even his songs about relationships carry a different, adult point of view. "Here We Go Again" is a beautifully simple ballad about rediscovered love. "Don't Lie to Me," a scorching, sultry slow blues, covers the betrayed trust of adultery. And the album's closer, "True to You," is an almost spiritual, devotional piece Sheehan wrote for his wife when she decided that she wanted to have another child at age 40.

The trade press has heaped critical praise on Sheehan. John Schoenberger, writing in the influential radio industry trade magazine, "Album Network," said "Tom Sheehan is an artist that you need to know about." "totallyadult", another important industry magazine, said "Just like the nightly news, Tom Sheehan delivers." And the Los Angeles Music Connection said "Tom Sheehan is our mouthpiece…it rocks!"

At Adult Rock and Major College Radio, "Film at Eleven" is gaining fast acceptance along side new releases by such industry heavyweights as The Wallflowers, U2, Mark Knopfler, Paul Simon and Lenny Kravitz with over 100 Adult Rock and Major College radio stations playing the record.

Bottom line: if you like music that makes you think, music that is provocative, with lyrics that are intelligent, then Tom Sheehan and "Film at Eleven" are for you.
