Editorial Reviews
2004 single from Pittsburgh rockers is packed full of rock nuggets & dirty boogie tempos, challenging the listener with non-traditional ideas, everything from The Cramps to Zeppelin & Beck goes into the blender, gets distilled, & comes out one very lethal brew. The title track is b/w 'Loch Ness Monster' & 'Horsepower' (Redux). Mute.

It's amazing the difference a year makes. Upon its release, August and Everything After sounded remarkably fresh, a welcome change from the crunch and screech of grunge. Blending the vocal athleticism of Van Morrison with the moody rock of The Band, the Counting Crows turned on a whole legion of fans turned off by modern rock. But what sounded fresh soon became stale as dozens of bands flocked to the radio with euthanized versions of the Counting Crows' sound. But you shouldn't hold that against the Crow boys. August and Everything After is a fantastic rock album. Though "Mr. Jones" was the moneymaker, the disc features such standout cuts as the dark lilt of "Anna Begins," the morose "Rain King," and the outstanding U2-meets-Grant Lee Buffalo anthem "Murder of One." Maybe time, and another listen, will heal the damage wrought. --Tod NelsonCustomer Reviews:
Favorite CD of all time.......2007-07-06
Brilliant debut album.......2007-07-02
Mr Jones, Round here and Rain king were the best songs on this cd but you could easily play from start to end and appreciate it. Their following albums are also good but their debut was certainly the best.
Soon after came Hootie and the Blowfish, Sister Hazel and Dave Matthews with similar sounds. But Counting Crows were first to bring back this sound.
August ... Is A Year-Round Classic!.......2007-05-23
Take my advice: BUY IT!
I have owned this album since its debut and I have found that it never ages. I listen to it often and find myself connecting with the deep lyric content. The timbre changes keep the songs fresh and interesting with the use of dobro, mandolin, and accordian. Adam Duritz's voice always seems to be fighting a battle that he is winning. This Translated West Coast sound employs a folk element, yet it is Rock; do not doubt it. The songs are finely crafted and you can listen to the whole album without ever hitting the skip button. The moods process from hopeful to meloncholy and back again. The lyric content is easily grasped and is a reflection of the feelings of most of Generation X, or anyone else that is still breathing. You will find it exceptional, I'm sure. So go ahead and order it.
A versatile collection of songs.......2007-04-22
The songs have been covered, re-done, played with a myriad of acoustic, electric, and string arrangements and they always hold up.
The lyrical potency of Murder of One, Anna Begins, Rain King, and ROund Here prove their timelessness again and again whether through individual listening or through application in film and TV.
This is a landmark album for the band, American rock, and the 90s

I love that their songs have some point while still being upbeat, for the most part, which is a rare feat- I've found most light songs lack any real depth.
My favorite song on this CD was 'Anna Begins', but they were all amazing.
I also had the chance to see the Counting Crows live in concert, and that was amazing too- I think the live version adds to the depth of the songs, so now I'm planning to buy their live CD as well.
I'd definitely recommend this CD to anyone.

Recovering the Satellites may not be quite the tower of song that the Crows' debut August and Everything After was, but it could hardly be called a sophomore slump. Vocalist Adam Duritz and crew mine similar territory on the more densely produced Satellites, couching tales of dreamers, lovers, and losers in music that's part classic rock redux and part heartfelt folk jangle. As able as the band is though, it remains Duritz's show, and his plaintive voice and serpentine lyrics are what drive this record home, particularly on "Daylight Fading," "Miller's Angels" and the aching hit "A Long December." --Michael RubyCustomer Reviews:

Too much too soon is the m.o. of so many bands who, thanks to the fleeting fame that accompanies music-video breakthroughs, are famous before their time and has-beens five minutes later. You could be excused for thinking that's the case with Counting Crows, darlings of both MTV and VH1, who here release a double concert CD after only two studio albums. But you'd be wrong. The set, an acoustic disc recorded for VH1's Storytellers and an electric one from MTV's Live from the 10 Spot, proves how well the oft-bootlegged Crows have earned their reputation as a smoking live band. It also shows how elastic their rambling and evocative songs can be, some of which appear on both discs but in vastly different arrangements. People may tire of vocalist Adam Duritz's perpetually-wounded-soldier-of-love act, but this is one band whose success was hard-won and is richly deserved. --Daniel DurchholzCustomer Reviews:

I highly recommend this as a must have CD of Counting Crows. Two CDs, one is more acoustic than the other. My preference is for the second CD which is edgy and loud, long versions of songs I love. Sullivan Street, track 4 on CD#2 is awesome.
There are two versions of "Round Here" on this CD, one acoustic with only Adam and Dave. Both are fantastic.

Hard Candy is, most certainly, just another Counting Crows album. But it's difficult to imagine that there's ever going to be too many. For a band that formed during the grunge-dominated early 1990s, Counting Crows did something remarkably brave--though they helped themselves to the same legacy of 1970s and '80s FM radio rock as the Seattle groups, they chose not to subvert it with any punk influences. Counting Crows were determined to play Steve Miller and Tom Petty and Bruce Hornsby at their own game, and Hard Candy is the fourth astonishing album that has resulted. Counting Crows have now settled into a template with which they clearly feel comfortable--simple but elaborately orchestrated songs, buffed and polished to a high sheen, which serve as a glittering backdrop to Adam Duritz's lyrics. These, now as ever, are chiefly concerned with excitingly unattainable women and the roads he travels to get to or away from them. He tantalizes, as he often does, with specific names and places, but is never so solipsistic that the songs are robbed of a universal appeal. --Andrew MuellerCustomer Reviews:

The disk is well recorded, and the band was very much "on" when the recordings were made. There isn't a bad track on the CD, but in particular, I liked "Holiday in Spain", which always carries a nice, wistful vibe, and is particularly good here.
The real measure of how much I enjoyed the CD is that I purchased it as a gift for another music dweeb (I already had all of the tracks in MP3 format).

Amazing Crowes.......2007-02-07
BOTH of these CDs rock. The Band disc is simply an amazing album that holds up to their greatest work. Another Roadside is one of the best rock songs I've heard in months. Why this didn't come out instead of the mediocre By The Way is totally beyond my comprehension.
I went in thinking "why do I need another Amorica" because I already love that album. But the different takes on the album are great... a bit softer and smoother. And the unreleased gems buried in the middle are simply great rock songs.
Lets hope the brothers Robinson can recreate some of this magic with their new album in the works!

What a fantastic collection. Feathers, Wyoming and Me, My Heart's Killing Me. I can never hear Descending, Cursed Diamond, Wiser Time enough. Chris always does a stellar job singing, screaming, enjoying himself as he gives his all to everything. Love those hot, groovin' Crowes's jams. I have to say that I did miss "Esta es la mejor mota" at the end of High Head Blues--I always looked forward to that little line.
Contrary to what the words of Wiser Time say, you guys part the sea every time you play. Thanks for the Crowegasm.

For fans of Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, et al., this is the essential cartoon soundtrack as well as a monument to surrealism. During his 22 years as a composer for Warner Bros. animated shorts, Stalling invented the musical vocabulary of cartoons. Producer Hal Willner has lovingly assembled a sonic collage that showcases Stalling's compositional genius and uncanny ability to borrow a tune. It's a whirling collection of random moments, chock full of music you never knew you knew, from Bugs Bunny's theme from "Rabbit Fire" to Raymond Scott's "Powerhouse" to Stalling's own "Woo! Woo!" Also included in the mix: outtakes from recording sessions, and several complete scores. --Heidi MacDonaldCustomer Reviews:
Best compilation CD ever.......2007-02-18
Only a handful of tracks are a complete score from one cartoon; most are snippets from several cartoons edited together with a common theme.
This CD is about a composer and his music, more than about the cartoons for which he composed it. To drive home this point, it includes the score from, of all things, 1939's "The Good Egg." No one would consider "The Good Egg" to be among the best Warner cartoons, but the score, heard by itself, turns out to be a tour de force that is highly representative of Stalling's work. That's what makes this CD such a great listening experience: It was pieced together by musicologists who chose the music based on its auditory qualities, and not on the relative fame of the cartoon associated with it. It is not merely a trip down memory lane (although it is that, too), but is a great creative work in its own right.
Despite the vast amount of Stalling music that exists, this CD provides as ambitious and exhaustive an overview as can be given, and its 1995 follow-up, while also worth having, is but a pale afterthought. There's no following this act.
Here we go........2006-11-16
Stallings CDs.......2006-11-10
Not to mention these are some of the finest musicians you will ever hear...a lesson in classical music, and cartoons.
The Carl Stalling Project.......2005-09-12
Carl Stalling was the chief music arranger for Warner Brothers cartoons from 1936 to 1958. He was one of the foremost composers of cartoon music. This disk is much better than "The Carl Stalling Project Volume II."
Warner Brother's King of Music.......2003-12-02
Willner sifted through hundreds of cartoons to choose about 40 with the most significant music. He presents the music in a variety of formats. A few tracks provide the soundtrack for a single entire cartoon. Others are medlies from a certain period in Stalling's career or pieces that set a particular mood (such as the "Anxiety Montage"). There are also tapes from recording sessions for 1951's "Putty Tat Trouble" that give insight on how this music was recorded. I couldn't recommend this CD any more highly. (After you've given it a listen, check out a Raymond Scott "best of" album like "Reckless Nights and Turkish Twilights" to see just how many of its tracks are familiar from various cartoons.)
Stalling's music, instead of following the traditional rules of musical structure (exposition, development, theme, variations, etc.), was written to follow the rapid action of cartoons. Stalling would not compromise on this, even if it meant having the 50-piece orchestra play fortissimo for five seconds and then having only one piccolo playing the next four seconds. To ensure a perfect correspondence between the sound and the image, Stalling and the cartoon's directors would agree on a few sketches and on the timing of the action. This enabled Stalling to compose and record the music without even seeing the movie. Carl Stalling was also a master at telling a story through music, with gestures so clear, that there is never any doubt as to his intentions.
Stalling once said, "One problem with cartoons today is that they have so much dialogue the music doesn't mean much." Unfortunately, this statement rings true as we move into 2004. But keeping Carl Stalling from rolling in his grave is not why you need to buy this CD. You need it because it is IMPOSSIBLE to maintain a bad mood while this CD is playing. You need this to listen to as a stress reducer on those tough days. You need this because it is complete childhood in a disc.
I challenge you to turn on your television and watch some Looney Tunes. Turn up the volume and listen while doing something else (wash dishes, write a paper perhaps.) I guarantee you will know exactly what is happening, and to whom. This was the comedic skill and genius talent of Carl Stalling.
As Porky Pig would say: "abieh-abieh-abieh... That's All Folks!"

Few young bands have embraced classic rock as fully as the Black Crowes. Their debut album features a bar-band stomp rooted in the back catalogs of the Rolling Stones, Free, the Faces, any number of early-'70s hard rockers. The secret of their success has been singer Chris Robinson's lanky rock-star poses matched with a voice as raw as whisky and as inviting as velvet. Add a healthy rhythm section accentuated by producer (and Rick Rubin protégé) George Drakoulias and you've got the dynamic shuffle of their hits ("Jealous Again" and the title track). While the band clearly likes to party, they're even more convincing as the Sunday-morning comedown of "She Talks to Angels." --Rob O'ConnorAmazon.com

THE BLACK CROWES $HAKE YOUR MONEY MAKER WITH THEIR DEBUT ALBUM........2007-02-06
THE BLACK CROWES have always fascinated me. Like GUNS N' ROSES, THE BLACK CROWES seemed to be on the right track of emulating great legendary bands such as THE ROLLING STONES and AEROSMITH. For a while, it even seemed possible that a band like THE BLACK CROWES could even sound better than THE STONES and AEROSMITH. When brothers Chris Robinson on lead vocals and Rich Robinson on lead guitar met up and joined forces with Jeff Cease on rhythm guitar, Steve Gorman on drums and Johnny Colt on bass, THE BLACK CROWES were born and Rock n' Roll was in for a treat and a big surprise. THE BLACK CROWES frontman and lead singer Chris Robinson would attempt in becoming Rock's next big sex symbol on stage and give you dance moves that would rival and compare to that of Jagger and Tyler. As time went by, Robinson has successfully achieved and accomplished this difficult task. To add more, Robinson sings and belts his songs with such extreme power and emotion, that he gives the music an additional kick and climatic power that makes you feel like you are listening to real Rock n' Roll. THE BLACK CROWES style of music brings back the legendary Rock n' Roll music of its glorious past. THE CROWES love to jam to the Blues sound and the music of their southern rock roots. When THE BLACK CROWES recorded their debut album, it was history repeating itself only this time, the music was a more "in your face" type style and far more improved. In my opinion, "$HAKE YOUR MONEY MAKER" is a well made album.
I will list and briefly review all of the song tracks in their original exact running order as follows: (1.) "Twice As Hard," (This is a very enjoyable song. This song has a mixture of the Blues and Southern Rock music. I love the way Rich and Jeff play their guitars in this one. They make their guitars scream and harmonize beautifully together like the way guitars were meant to sound like, breathtaking. Chris sings this song with such raw power and energy that he shakes this song to its very foundations and bares its roots.) (2.) "Jealous Again," (This is another well recorded Rocker that has some feel of life to it and a good beat that will give you tingles and goose bumps all over your body and make you want to dance.) (3.) "Sister Luck," (This is another well recorded slow Rocker. In my opinion, this song sounds alot like a ROLLING STONES song. Rich and Jeff do not play their guitars hard in the beginning, but they do make up for it by stepping it up and take the music into the next level or phase by daring to grind their guitars in your face with their blistering playing. This song sounds beautiful. Chris sings and belts this song out like a blues singer.) (4.) "Could I've Been So Blind," (This is another powerful Rocker that dares to Rock in your face. Rich and Jeff play guitars so well together that its like a perfect Rock n' Roll marriage made in heaven. Chris sings this Rocker with such power and emotion that he gives this Rocker alot of additional raw energy resulting in making this Rocker a whole lot better.) (5.) "Seeing Things," (This is a well recorded slow Rocker which shows the raw power and blistering lead vocals of Chris Robinson. Chris belts out this slow Rocker like he is singing the Blues. Chris actually makes you feel this slow Rocker along with him. Chris dares to bare the roots of this slow Rocker to its knees before your very eyes. This slow Rocker will leave you breathless and begging for more.) (6.) "Hard To handle," (Ah yes, this song track is quite simply, my most favorite Rocker on this whole album. This Rocker definitely kicks a*s. This is REAL Rock n' Roll the way it was meant to sound. You have to hear this one to believe it. Rich and Jeff let their guitars run loose for this Rocker. Chris sings and belts this Rocker the way a frontman is supposed to rule a Rocker.) (7.) "Thick n' Thin," (This is another well recorded Southern Rocker that kicks a*s. Rich and Jeff play their guitars like they are daring to push the limits of their playing. Chris sings this song like he is willing to help push Rich and Jeff beyond their limits.) (8.) "She Talks To Angels," (This is a beautiful acoustic turned slow Rocker. Rich and Jeff play their acoustic guitars like a warm summer breeze. Their acoustic sound is so magical and heavenly that it sounds and feels like a soft warm wind in the countryside where the hills and mountains echo its whining lifeforce.) (9.) "Struttin' Blues," (This is another well recorded Blues Rocker that kicks a*s. Chris sings this song with such raw power and emotion that he can make his blistering lead vocals ricochet and echo off of Rich's and Jeff's guitars. With this in mind, Rich and Jeff make their guitars whine and screech like there is no tomorrow.) (10.) "Stare It Cold" (Again, this is another well recorded Blues Rocker that kicks a*s. Rich and Jeff NEVER let up in this Blues Rocker. I bet that their guitars were tired and screaming for rest after this album was finished. Chris' microphone must be filled with enough electricity due to the raw energy that ran through it.) and (11.) "Unidentified song." (This acoustic Blues number clocks in about one minute and seven seconds. This acoustic Blues song sounds pretty good but it was probably an aftermath or epilogue following the completion of this dynamic album.) Overall, "$HAKE YOUR MONEY MAKER" is a well recorded album that kicks a*s.
I would like to highly recommend that everyone purchase this legendary album to own as a valuable and important part of their own personal music collection. This legendary debut album will definitely stand the test of time and will always be around to be enjoyed, appreciated and cherished for many years to come, NOW AND FOREVER.
In closing, THE BLACK CROWES have performed with their idols such as THE ROLLING STONES, AEROSMITH and JIMMY PAGE. However, THE BLACK CROWES have had their shares of ups and downs and highs and lows throughout their whole career. THE BLACK CROWES broke up temporarily in the new millennium following the get together of JIMMY PAGE & THE BLACK CROWES. It appears that the Robinson brothers have been fighting and duking it out for many years like that of the Davies brothers of THE KINKS. However, The Robinson brothers would settle down. Chris Robinson's well publicized marriage and divorce to actress Kate Hudson would bring the Robinson brothers back together again and THE BLACK CROWES are in the process of releasing their first new studio album in five years. This new album should be out sometime in 2007. I really do hope that THE BLACK CROWES will stay together permanently this time. Rock n' Roll needs a great band like THE BLACK CROWES to remind Rock n' Roll of it glorious roots in order for Rock n' Roll to breathe and survive. And as the saying goes, "AND THE REST IS ROCK N ROLL HISTORY," am I wrong? So here's to you Chris, Rich, Jeff, Steve and Johnny. THE BLACK CROWES RULES. Keep Persevering. Keep The Faith. Keep On Rockin'. Thanks for reading my review and I hope you enjoyed reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it for your reading pleasure. I also hope that you will read all of my other reviews in the near future when time permits. Long Live Rock n' Roll. Rock out always and take it easy. Forever in Rock, John L.
Great album.......2006-02-05
What makes The Black Crowes so great to me is that they combine my three favorite genres of rock, soul, and some blues and they do it well...
You got southern rock songs like Twice As Hard, Sister Luck, Thick n Thin... You got a great balld in She Talks to Angels... Hard rockers in Stare It Cold and Jealous Again... And you got possibly the most catchy song the 90's and that is the cover of Hard to Handle.
If you're a rock, soul and blues fan I suggest picking this album up... It might not be from a classic time period, but it sure is a classic album from start to finish.

Shake that money maker...........2006-01-15
It opens with "Twice as Hard", stating a message right from the beginning. This was a new band (then) that was here to show they knew how to rock and roll. In an age where hair bands hadn't died out yet, and grunge still had yet to hit the mainstream, the Crowes used their down to basics, Rolling Stones meet Skynyrd sound to hook fans everywhere of good, of fashioned blues rock.
The next song, "Jealous Again" was another hit, this one being the first single released. It is what set the tone and opened the way for the Crowes to build an instant fan base, that while isn't as strong today as it was in the early days, still remains.
Other hits are here, including "Hard to Handle", a revamped and kick ass version of the old Otis Redding song. Also found here is the ultimate ballad by the band, "She Talks To Angels". in an age where the power ballads were all over the airwaves, it was good to hear a true rock and roll force kick back and show the boys with makeup just how a blues tinged emotional rock and roll ballad is supposed to sound.
There isn't really a weak spot on the album, even once you get past the hits. "Sister Luck" has a bluesy, slow moving pulse....the kind that makes you wanna kick back and just savor your beer. "Struttin' Blues", "Could i Have Been So Blind", and "Seeing Things" all keep the album moving without letting up. "Thick and Thin" raises the decible level a little more, carrying on the pace set by "Hard to Handle", and right before they slow down into "She Talks to Angels". Finally, they top the disc off with "Stare it Cold", letting us all see that the Crowes weren't done yet.
All in all, if you like blues rock with an upbeat tone, or just good old time rock and roll, check this out. The Crowes use old formulas, but give them a fresh new flavor, and in the decade plus since the original release, have given rock fans a good alternative to the rest of the music scene.
