Boyd Produced and was Instrumental in Creating Some of the Most Important Recordings of the 1960s (As Well as the '70s and '80s). He is Best Known for his Work with English Folk Musicians, Having Shaped the Early Sounds of Fairport Convention, Incredible String Band, Fotheringay, John Martyn and Nick Drake. But He also Provided the Base of the Early Sounds of Pink Floyd, Eric Clapton, Soft Machine, Nico, Geoff and Maria Muldaur and Shirley Collins. This Collection Brings You Some of Boyd's Exemplary Pieces from the 1960's by the Aforementioned Artists and Many More. This CD is basically a companion piece to Joe Boyd's book of the same name containing key selections of the bands he produced / managed. Joe Boyd was an American who helped shape the careers of Fairport Convention, Sandy Denny, Nick Drake, The Incredible String Band, Pink Floyd and others by being a great producer and even greater manger with enough understanding about the music biz and the musicians under his Witchseason Productions company. I could go on but if your interested into what was happening in swinging London during the mid to late 60's than get this along with Boyd's book and you can have fun with a "six-degrees-of-separation" involving key players in the music business of the 1960's.

This has to be Mancini at his best.......2004-03-01

This CD contains contains Mancini's Beaver Valley Suite. In this Suite, he "writes" of his childhood in a steel town. Anyone who grew up in a mill town will immediately identify with the images created by the music. This has to be Mancini at his best. There are six more original pieces (tracks 6 through 11) that showcase Henry Mancini's unique ability of giving joy to others while doing something that he truly enjoys. I have all of these pieces on the LP, Debut. I have been looking for them on CD for years. I am listening to the CD as I write this review. As the sleeve says, it "presents a quality of sound superior to the original vinyl album."

Great set of wartime rarities.......2003-05-14

Spike Jones was the king of the novelty song performers, with hits like "Der Fuehrer's Face" and the parody version of "Sheik of Araby" becoming huge hits during World War II. This is a swell 3-CD set, gathering a full eighty-one of Jones' best tracks from his 1940s heyday, drawn from an extensive archive of radio broadcasts made for the Standard Transcription service. The tightness of his City Slickers band is amply demonstrated in these manic, kookily orchestrated performances. Toots, squonks, blatts and bleats whiz by at lightning speed, as one daffy song after another will delight devoted fans. Amazingly, Jones had the unusual, almost unique ability to perform a repertoire almost entirely made up of comedic material, and yet still be quite listenable and engaging. His jazz chops were hardly in question, and from time to time Jones would dash off a non-novelty ballad or two, just to give the rubes something to think about. Of course, just as often he would perform a song that *sounded* like a straight ballad, but would turn out to be another goof. (One great example of this is the sultry "Serenade To A Jerk," sung in slinky, burlesque tones by Myrtle Horwin.) This collection may seem a little overwhelming, but like his studio recordings, these radio performances have a certain brilliance and joie de vivre about them that will leave you enchanted. Definitely worth checking out!

Standard Transcription Collection.......2003-04-12

This collection has remastered material from the large stack of Standard Transcription discs from the early 1940's. There are many songs not recorded on RCA, many on the theme of wartime ("48 Reasons Why"), and the quality is excellent. The packaging is threadbare but this is an essential CD package for true music lovers.

A search for Deep Purple's "Smoke on [in] the water," brought up this title. I rate it only #1 because I could not locate the "Smoke on the Water" listing. Amazon seems to be having an indexing problem.

Great arrangements!.......2007-03-03

I bought this for son's bedtime 4 years ago and had no idea how much I would enjoy it! I am a musician and generally just tolerate most music marketed for kids. These Fred Molin CDs were quite the pleasant surprise. The arrangements are relaxing and very high quality. Not cheesy or too new-agey. Many real acoustic instrument performances, not all synthesized BS.

I look forward to getting this out around Thanksgiving as a break from the Disney Lullaby I and II CDs we put in year-round (these are also great). For what it's worth, there's nothing really "Disney" about the CD, must just be the label or producer.

This is a wonderful CD. I wasn't sure what to expect. I like Disney but wasn't sure what they were promoting here. Was Mickey going to talk?
None of that. All classical music in a very easy and soothing style. We have had a stressful past summer and fall due to 3 moves and adding a baby to the family.
All in 6 months. My now 2.5 year old one held up well but at night was just basically losing it. I finally digged this CD out and now when it is bedtime she lays there and listens calmly or talks softly and just is much more relaxed.
She now asks for the music after her bath and knowing that she is getting something educational as well as something that interests her makes me happy.I could listen to it all day long and frankly we are still listening to it after Christmas and most likley for a while longer.
It is perfect and draws you in right away.
I am not a musician but enjoy good music. This will not bore you but keep you in a happy spot, soothed and relaxed feeling.
Well worth the afford and money.
I may buy another one for my baby .

It's so soothing! I could listen to it all day. And I have 50 other Christmas cd's -- mostly instrumental! I listen to it in the kitchen when I'm working in there, and I listen to it on the computer when I'm working here! I borrowed if from our library, and now it's on my Christmas wish list! I will be buying it for myself if I don't get it as a gift! I would give it 8 stars if I could!

Perfect For The Hard-To-Get-To-Sleep Infant or Child.......2003-12-18

I already have the Disney Lullaby Album(NOT to be confused with the Disney BABY Lullaby Album!) which I always thought of as THE perfect one, but this one is just as great!! Take it from someone who has been in the child care field for almost 23 years. I have tried them all, and found that this CD, plus the regular Disney Lullaby Album, are THE BEST on the market today! I know for a fact that any tired baby or child will immediatly calm down and fall asleep when this album is played, much much faster than with any other music. I even find if the day is a little on the stress-filled side, putting this on while feeding or playing with them becomes a nice and smooth experience! Trust me on this one, Disney's Christmas Lullaby Album is well worth the cost; for the nice music, and the peace it instills in the children, and you!

This Scottish outfit has a truly unusual take on rock. Their music is an unlikely combination of corrosive metal, quietly sensitive indie rock, and sound-for-sound's-sake ambience. Aereogramme seems to thrive on extreme contrasts: quiet vs. wall-of-sound assault, big-as-day riffing vs. haunting sonic atmospherics, soft vocals vs. harsh screaming. The group likes to suddenly shift from sections featuring fierce guitar shredding and punishing drumming to passages with thoughtful acoustic piano, gently pleading vocals, and nuanced brushwork; or they let solid songs dissolve into soundscapes composed of moody drones, blips, and artfully deployed shards of feedback. Aereogramme's striking textures can dazzle and their transitions can be genuinely jolting. At times, however, the album feels artily abstruse, a remote work to be appreciated from a distance. It's fun to be so non-mainstream that you're freinds don't even know you while still being cool. That's what this album does for you. It blew my eyeballs out of my sockets and my skull fell out through my ears. It was really that good. One CD with music for all your moods. They sure look at you strangely when you buy this one at the CD shop.

Worth every gramme of it!.......2003-06-04

Somehow it didn`t surprise me at all when i found out that Aereogramme come from Scotland after I`d heard the album. It simply confirmed that the Scotts keep providing the rock scene with some of the most interesting and truly alternative groups in recent times (check out Arab Strap. or Ruby, or of course Mogwai). What does surprise me is that a group like that isn`t immediately picked up by a label like Chemical Underground, they would fit it like a glove...
Aereogramme rely on sound contrast and they seem to have mastered that recipe. They go from dark and melancholic Radiohead-like scapes to gut-turning metal passages (!) and back to synthie drones and effects all in a song`s work. It's anyway super difficult to categorise these people as they are definately doing their very own thing and, damn, what a thing that is too!
With a singer who resembles (both visually and vocally) Phil Collins but who has about 10 billion times more talent than Phil, with a rhythm section than can rock like a b***h but also mellow down to reveal depression hymns and melancholy odes, and with musical ideas that are probably too intelligent for the current MTV generation these Scotts are winning bets all the way...
So why aren`t they megabig yet???
Well, who cares and since when does that matter? Since when does size matter alltogether? (save it , save it)...
As long as Aereogramme remain "small" it`s almost guaranteed that their sound will retain the incredible quality of "A story in white"..It seems to work that way with groups like them doesn`t it?

I can't decide if I like Aereogramme or not, which is a horrible way to start an album review. It's also a bad way to keep my job as a music writer, because it's our job to be steadfast and certain, to opine concretely and unswayingly, to... ah, whatever. Aereogramme's debut album, A Story in White, doesn't make that job an easy one, because, in many ways, it defies categorization. It is a schizophrenic affair between moody, cerebral, almost-ballads and razor-sharp, ear-piercing, raw aggression.

It's apparent from the opening bars of the first track, "The Question is Complete", that a A Story in White is not going to be the smoothest, most relaxing of rides. The listener is treated to an industrial strength attack of pounding, screeching and cut-up feedback, which leads into a raucous, yet tight, guitar-bass-drum interlude. Then the emotive part kicks in, eluding to the softer side of the Scottish trio. "The Question is Complete" goes back and forth like that, leaving the listener constantly wondering: Will they assault me again with their big heavy guitars, or will they keep it mellow for just a few more bars? This is the story of A Story in White.

Personally-and here's where I do have an opinion-I would lose all of the heavy, loud, obnoxious, screechy-screaming, guitar-distorted chaos that peppers the album, and then I would forget those parts ever existed and go on making pretty, heartfelt songs without the melodrama. At best, the aggression seems unnecessary; at worst, it's completely annoying. But I doubt Aereogramme is looking for advice, especially of that nature, so it's hard to pretend that my wish is going to come true.

The American version (on Matador) of A Story in White has Aereogramme's only other release to date, the White Paw EP, tacked on at the end. The three songs that make up the EP prove that Aereogramme can keep things mellow and interesting, without the aggression. Although there are forays into the rougher side rock on the White Paw songs, the edge isn't as sharp. As a result, the songs flow better. Too bad they didn't approach A Story in White with the same even keel.

Mindblowing Masterpiece.......2002-04-27

This album is so intense and subtle all at once. This is my favorite album right now and I have to say may be one of the most important albms to come across Indy rock in a long time. Every dynamic can be heard in A Story In White. I would say that Aereogramme is a cross between Refused, Flaming Lips, and maybe some early 90's indy rock. You have to hear this to believe it! Buy it!

piercing bolts of quasi-metal and foggy whisps of electronica mark this affecting work of ex-ganger's craig b. The dichotomy of craig's brutally earnest, hopelessly vulnerable lyrics and swiftly moving currents of noise dovetail surprisingly well (this modus operendi would never work for someone like morrisey). While plenty of bands dip their toes in the waters of loud/soft dynamics, aereogramme's quiet sections are flecked with such genuine, gentle melody and their volume is so clearly not merely for loudness' sake that they immedietely distance themselves from those bands of a similar mindset. poignant, affecting, and reflective. scotland is the musical center of the universe, and aereogramme one reason why.
