4 out of 5 stars Ashes in our mouth...........2005-04-10

I too heard this on a Pittsburgh radio station that played alot of good, hard to find music. I eard the b-side song "She's CooCoo" by Siouxsie And The Banshees on that same now defunct station. Anyways, "Glad I'm Not A Kennedy" and "Soviet Snow" on that station and I sought this cd out. It is a very solid cd. The song about Kennedy is a bouncy pop song, but the loops of Kennedy's voice are chilling, especially the loop "of nuclear war, of which even the fruits of victory will be ashes in our mouth" I gave it 4 stars because even though all the songs are very well written and composed, they all don't appeal to me. I highly reccomend this cd though. It still stands solid after all these years, which is rare. You can tell a good cd if you still like it years later. I like this one!

      5 out of 5 stars A Fraction Of Shona's Talent.......2002-12-27

South is perhaps a commercial disc, but loses none of the social and political commentary offered by this prolific New Zealand singer-songwriter. What most do not realize is that when "South" was released in 1988, Shona Laing had been performing for nearly two deacdes. She had released four albums, several singles, and recorded and toured with Manfred Mann's Earth Band for the "Somewhere In Afrika" album. Her previous abums are "Whispering Afraid"(1972); "Shooting Stars Are Only Seen At Night"(1974); "Tied To the Tracks"(1981); and "Genre"(1985). The first two have the same lyrical style, but are very folk oriented, where as the latter two are of the same pop music style as "South". In fact, a few songs from "Genre" were carried over to "South". If you like catchy music, but with something intelligent to say, I recommend ANYTHING by Shona Laing.

5 out of 5 stars "SOUTH" and more...........2001-04-22

This is a great CD and although most Shona Laing fans from the States think "South"(88'), "New on Earth"(92') and "Shona Laing"(94') are her only musical collections she has in fact been around since the 70's ...performing, writing and touring all these years. It wasn't until "SOUTH" that Shona was able to work the "world music stage" and get some long overdue recognition. Two "Best of" Cds were put out during the early 90's, one of which I was able to purchase in New Zealand buy just using the power of the internet and contains 18 songs from all over her career titled, "SHONA LAING-1905-1990 A RETROSPECTIVE", well worth checking out and trying to find. "South" just opened the door of a great talent. Her most recent effort "Roadworks" which came out in the latter part of the 90's was nearly impossible to find here in the USA, out of print right after it came out? Hopefully this isn't the last we'll here of this very talented New Zealand singer-writer, performer! many of "South" featured. UPDATE OCT. 2002 Shona
Laing has a brand new 2-cd collection just out in New Zealand
called "The Essential Shona Laing" featuring 30 tracks spaning
the 80's and 90's and a few from her even earlier 70's period.
This is an excellent collection to have, she is so talented and
also includes several from her 1997 release "Roadworks" which
was so hard to fine but is available in New Zealand on the web.

      5 out of 5 stars Shona Laing - South.......2001-01-02

If you haven't picked this one up, I would do so right away before it is unavailable like her other CDs. Shona was one of the most talented songwriters. With her unique voice and style all of her own, she is just as good as Kate Bush, Indigo Girls, and Natalie Merchant; and much better than most of the women who came after her. It would be wonderful to know what she is doing now. Some people who have commentted about "South" were unaware, but she did release more music after "South." There are two excellent CDs that came after "South." Typical of "80's" musicians in the "90's," Shona got rid of the drum machine and had a drummer perform on "New On Earth" (1992) and on "Shona" (1994). "South" has some of her most beautiful melodies and is possibly her best CD. I suggest looking for her two CDs that came later. Good luck!

      4 out of 5 stars Shona Laing.......2000-10-07

I've read every else's comments, and just wanted to mention that this woman has had a prodigious output, but, unfortunately, despite all her work and talent, she's never really made it big, and most of her music is out of print. Keep your eyes open on various auction sites and such, and pick up whatever you can.

The life of Teresa Sterne is as noteworthy as the label she once presided over (Nonesuch). As a child prodigy, she successfully filled world-class auditoriums in the 1940s with audiences eager to hear her piano playing. Then, inexplicably, Sterne abandoned her concert career only to resurface as the leader behind Nonesuch Records in the late 1960s, turning the budget classical label into one of the more adventurous and consistently rewarding labels around (and generally keeping quiet about her earlier fame). Half of this double-CD tribute collects recordings of a teenage Sterne at the keyboard; the second disc is devoted to some of the finest recordings from her Nonesuch tenure (1965-1979)--both are engrossing.

Ignore the surface noise on Sterne's disc (no small task on the Mozart Piano Concerto No. 20), and you'll hear a young pianist in fine form--she is expressive, and boasts crisp articulation and fine technique. She dances through Liszt's Hungarian Rhapsody No. 13 with riveting intensity; on Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 2 (with the New York Philharmonic), she shows a sensitive but no less virtuosic side. On the second disc, we get a virtual best-of for Nonesuch Records, including tracks by Joshua Rifkin, Paul Jacobs, and William Bolcom. Hard to imagine anyone doing it these days, but in one five-year period (1970-1975), Nonesuch released albums featuring the music of Stephen Foster, Edgar Varese, George Crumb, and a platter of Bulgarian folk tunes. They're all here. Now battling Lou Gehrig's disease, Sterne herself may be unable to celebrate this release, but for anyone who has treasured a release from Nonesuch's glory days, it's a moving tribute. --Jason Verlinde

This is an awe inspiring piece of musicianship recorded at integral cross roads of Zimbabwe's turbulent background. The mbira players seem to capture this turbulence and turn it into works of beauty and grace. This is just wonderful.

        Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A dazzling debut from Scotland's finest young fiddler........2006-11-06

Listening to `Heartsease', Shona Mooney's debut album, it is not difficult to understand why she was voted BBC Radio Scotland's Young Traditional Musician of the Year in 2006. Not since Catriona MacDonald and Ian Lowthian's `Opus Blue' has an album of fiddle music spent as much time in my CD player. This is an album crammed full of foot-stomping sets and beautiful memorable melodies that will stay with you long after the CD has finished playing.

Alongside some original and inventive arrangements of traditional tunes are a bunch of new compositions that amply demonstrate that with exponents as accomplished as Miss Mooney the tradition of Scottish fiddle music is in very safe hands indeed.

My personal favourites are Shona's own delightful and haunting `Kaleidoscope' which features some interesting bowing technique and a memorable lyrical melody, and `Brave Snowdrops' a terrific collection of tunes which demonstrates the sense of fun in her playing as well as showcasing the talents of her accompanying musicians. The album's opening set `The Haggis' is another track that's sure to please. Shona and her band storm through four great tunes with such assurance and energy it gladdens the heart.

Special mention should be made of Shona's band on this album who have provided the perfect backdrop to her dazzling fiddle playing. Particularly effective is the lively piano accompaniment from Ali Vass, which is always interesting without ever being intrusive. Also of interest is the contribution made by David de la Haye, who introduces some atmospheric electronic effects to a couple of the arrangements, particularly effectively on the closing track `The Ettrick Shepherd'.
Also featured are the extraordinary talents of multi-instrumentalist Ian Stephenson, best known for his work with 422 and the Kathryn Tickell Band, and James MacKintosh of Shooglenifty who adds solid drums and percussion to a couple of the tracks.

The accompanying booklet contains extensive notes that both inform and entertain and are clearly the work of a musician who cares passionately about, and has an extensive knowledge of her music.

All in all, a very impressive debut that I can heartily recommend to anyone who appreciates good music. Shona Mooney is a very gifted player with an engaging expressive style and exemplary taste in her choice of repertoire; I will be looking forward to hearing her future work with much anticipation. Don't miss out on this, her hugely enjoyable and impressive debut.

I CAN ACTUALLY FEEL THE HEALING IN SHONA MUSIC BUT BY FAR THIS IS THE BEST. IT MOVES MY SPIRIT AND GET RID OF MY WORRIES AND FEARS. I MEDITATE TO IT AND RELEASE NEGATIVE ENERY THAT IS AROUND ME TO CALM MY NERVES.

THIS MUSIC REPRESENTS NEW BEGININGS OF NATURAL ANIMAL BEHAVIORS IN SEASONS OF CHANGE: A SNAKE SHEADING ITS SKIN OR A CAMELON COLORS CHANGES DURING ATTACK TO WARD OFF EVIL SPIRITS, A CACOON CHANGING INTO A BUTTERFLY.

PARTICULARILY, I LIKE THE CALL AND RESPONSE OF THE TWO MBIRAS PLAYING IN HARMONY CONNECTING EACH SPIRT.

WORDS CANNOT EXPRESS THIS MUSIC PLAYED SO DELICATELY BY MEN... THANKS FOR KEEPING THIS BEAUTIFUL MUSIC ALIVE. I RATE THIS MUSIC A 10!!! SOOTHING TO BATH IN.

5 out of 5 stars Two old guys twiddling their thumbs.......2000-03-01

My title sums this album up about as well as a review of the Book of Genesis titled: "One old guy waving his arms."

This is not "World Music" - it is not of this world. These "old guys" are (or were, unfortunately - Dumi died on Thanksgiving 1999) all-time mbira masters who, for their own incomprehensible reasons, never played together until this album.

I have no idea what the reviewer from "The Beat" (above) was listening to. "Oomph" and "punch" do not apply here. This album, more than any other (including Dumi's rather dry solo album: "Chaminuka") distills the essence of Shona music.

Use it as wallpaper, use it for your breathing exercises, use it to put the baby to sleep, whatever. However you expose yourself to it, you will eventually become addicted.

(You wouldn't know from Amazon's scratchy track samples, but the recording quality is also excellent.)

          Album Description

When you watch flowing water, you see it is alive. Its moving waves, over millions of years, have evolved into the wavy motions of its creatures.

Similarly, when birds are flying against the sky, the intelligence of the air becomes a visible kind of music — the flocks are like chords, and their flight patterns like atmospheric chord progressions.

The cross-rhythms of African music evoke the streaming wisdom of these fluid elements in an extraordinary way. From the early 1970s I became entranced with the deep, secret metabolism of Shona cross-rhythms and West African kre-kre rhythms, and began incorporating them into my music.

Streaming Wisdom and In the Wind, recorded from 1979 through 1982, were my first two albums of such music. Now, twenty-five years later, it's equally satisfying to re-master and re-release the material combined as a single CD.

William Allaudin Mathieu (b. 1937) is a pianist, composer, teacher, recording artist, and author. He has composed a variety of chamber and choral works and made numerous solo piano recordings. He has written three books on music — The Listening Book; The Musical Life; and Harmonic Experience: Tonal Harmony from Its Natural Origins to Its Modern Expression.

Allaudin was a disciple of North Indian vocalist Pandit Pran Nath for 25 years. He studied African music with Nubian musician Hamza El Din, jazz with William Russo, and European classical music with Easley Blackwood.

In the 1960s, he spent several years as an arranger/composer for Stan Kenton and Duke Ellington, and was the musical director for the Second City Theater in Chicago (which he helped found) and for the Committee Theater in San Francisco. In the 1970s, he served on the faculties of the San Francisco Conservatory of Music and Mills College. In 1969 he founded the Sufi Choir, which he directed until 1982.

The past two decades Allaudin has devoted to composition, performance, recording, teaching, and writing from his home near Sebastopol, California.
