5 out of 5 stars the best mathcore album since Calculating Inifinty.......2006-06-28

The End veer closer to Dillinger Escape Plan than Meshuggah on the mathcore spectrum, and like DEP's genius Calculating Infinity, this album is set apart from the heard for one reason other than the technical, jazzy, time-changes, blah, blah, blah, that everyone associates with this kind of music: diversity. You can tell when a song ends and the next one begins because each song is carefully crafted, inspite of its innate randomness that makes the genre so addicting. If I were to rank the greatest mathcore albums of all time, Calculating Infinity would be #1, and this would be #2. The genre is old enough to have been defined now, so my advise would be if you like the spastic hardcore/jazz fusion/grind of bands like DEP, Botch, Meshuggah, Converge, etc., buy this EP.

P.S.
Pass on their full length, Within Davidia, though. It sucks.

5 out of 5 stars [crying].......2006-02-20

Man, this cd is so screwed up. (In a good way, obviously) Yes, this is definitely even more out there than their fantastic full length (Within Dividia), with more jazzy interludes, even more jagged, screeching guitar lines and electronic stuff and some strangely funky bass. (And of course, utterly insane technicality, but I'm not musical enough to declare either album the definitively more complex one. Suffice to say, they are both completely ridiculous in this aspect.) Unlike many here, however, I prefer that album. I like the horrifying, dark atmosphere of that album and the few more glimpses of melodicism and just the general greater cohesiveness but this is very good stuff. (Though 'Transfer Trachea...' has got quite a few moments of melodicism for a cd of this sort) Probably the most brutally weird tech-metalcore I've ever heard, and that's saying something. You probably won't remember a damn thing about it the first couple of times you listen to it besides a few vague impressions, but you'll probably have a good time listening to it anyway. I know I did. I can't utterly guarantee that you'll like it, obviously but ever tech-metal fan owes it to themself to at least check out The End.

However, I must curse Relapse for selling this as if it were a full length album. This is 22 minutes long. 22 minutes=EP. Obviously, I don't really care about the 3 extra bucks it cost me, but it's the principal of the thing.

4 out of 5 stars mixed.......2004-08-28

I'm a beatles fanatic. I even play in a tribute band here in Texas. Anyway, I like to pick up any Beatles related stuff I can find. I'd have to give Beatles Tribute: Number One Again mixed reviews. Excellent guitar work, solid bass, keys, etc, but uneven vocals. Some of the singers are good, some not. Hit and miss

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant acoustic covers by great unknowns.......2002-07-11

This is an outstanding collection of Beatles songs by some clearly talented ladies with lovely voices. All the songs are well known, though some are rarely covered. One such song is All you need is love, which is slowed down and also feautures some finger-snapping, reminiscent of Peggy Lee's cover of Fever. I wanna hold your hand is also slowed down, but it's possible that Nikki may have heard Petula's cover of this song. All the other covers are more faithful but still excellent.

What confuses me is the packaging. It claims that these are all singer/songwriters, but no mention is made of any available music of their own songs, nor is there any description or pictures of any of the ladies. The only other products mentioned are two more tribute cover albums (to Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd). If this is supposed to be a way of getting more people to know them, this is a strange package indeed.

The really important thing for us is that this a brilliant acoustic tribute to the Beatles. If the record company are unable to take the opportunity to promote the ladies properly, that's their problem.

4 out of 5 stars fun zeppelin addition.......2005-06-18

This is a fun CD to have in your collection if you've grown a little tired of listening to Zeppelin. These (unknown) women give fresh, interesting, stripped down versions of old classics. Unlike another reviewer, I found the jazzy version of Stairway to be a marvelous way to actually be able to LISTEN to this song again. But the All of My Love version is a complete bust (but then it wasn't very good in the original, either...).

3 out of 5 stars Living Loving Fade?.......2003-06-30

The guitar player IS good. What is it with the endings? They end abruptly, as if they were going to fade it out but didn't do the fade out. I liked the CD, the disapointment being "Stairway to Heaven" (obnoxius jazz/lounge version) and "All of My Love" (instrumental, sounds more like a backing track in need of a singer). Songs are acoustic versions of the songs, mostly, if not all in the original keys (since Plant sang high anyway, the girls had no trouble hitting "low" notes). If you have a sense of humor, somewhere out in the abyss is a CD of sound-a-like groups doing Stairway to Heaven...not Zepellin sound-a-likes, but a variety like Beatles, B-52's and Doors sound-a-likes. The only criteria was they use the same words to Stairway to Heaven. (melody changed in most cases)

5 out of 5 stars Where can I find these unknown singers???.......2002-07-30

It would be nice if this CD included some information about where one can find these unknown female singers? Do they write their own material? Do they play in bands? Do they have CD's out?

The only one I am aware of is Nikki Boyer. She sings for her band called "The Spirit Theory." If you like this CD and her vioce, you should check them out.

4 out of 5 stars Great guitar playing........2002-04-19

This album is a cool idea. Women singing Zeppelin songs. However, the best stuff on the album is the guitar work on "You Shook Me," "Ramble On" and "Dyre Maker." REALLY good guitarist.

4 out of 5 stars ZEPPELIN FOR LILLITH FANS!.......2002-02-28

Cool record for a tribute. I would have liked it better if they got some people I knew on here like Sarah McLachlan, but I it's good anyway. Some of the singers interpratations are really fun and others make you think a bit (like hearing a girl, sing to a girl, about a girl).

      2 out of 5 stars Wellllll............2005-03-06

Well...lets see. The tribute is a good idea, great songs. The singing is horrible, but the acousitcs are amazing. Who knew you could take a bad-ass song like "For those about to rock (we salute you) and play it on an acousitc guitar? But as for the singing goes, let's not pansey down AC/DC. Their a hard rock band, and they shouldn't be sung by female singers that sound like they should be singing country songs. Come on guys! That's like having Jimi Hendrix sing Stairway to Heaven.

      Ride On

1 out of 5 stars Another Big Miss for Reverberations.......2005-01-02

This is the 2nd tribute album I've been unfortunate enough to run into from this label. The first one I saw was a Black Sabbath tribute. I still have yet to hear one decent track from either of them. Anyone who enjoys the original music being covered, will find these albums to be weak and lame. A major snoozer! The only thing that keeps me awake while listening to it is the pain I feel from hearing it. The big appeal for most people who like these heavy metal/rock artists is the power and heaviness of the music. That idea is completly lost on this album. On rare occassion, it can be muted onto another style successfully, ie. Apocalyptica doing Metallica covers on cellos. In order for it to work the strong emotion needs to be maintained. Another miss on this album. This album has too many strikes against it. It just sucks. If you really like AC/DC, pass up this album and get some good headphones and crank up the old stuff. You'll be glad you did.

3 out of 5 stars Interesting concept, and well executed........2003-07-20

Female acoustic versions of AC/DC songs? Yes, it's a gimmick, but it works on its own terms. And it's a sweet irony, considering AC/DC's music has always been macho, swaggering boys' anthems.

So what happens when you put an army of Lilith Fair-ready female artists to these tunes? Something pretty good, actually. In fact, the best track on here is the opener, Sunny Hodge's unbelievably sweet, feminine "Hells Bells". The original, with its spare, ominous electric guitar riff and slow grinding groove, is the last song I'd expected to work in this context, but Hodge turns the riff into an almost primitive-blues acoustic riff while her thin, sweet voice turns the cock-rock lyrics into something so bizarre, you just have to grin. Single-name artist Patty does a good job turning "Highway to Hell" into a country-rock busking tune (I've sung that song with this arrangement, myself), and Leslie King is also great on "You Shook Me All Night Long". "Back in Black", though, suffers from cover artist Reyo Bikkin's inability to hit those Brian Johnson high notes on the chorus, rendering those feral "Back in black!" hooks rather flaccid.

Strange and weirdly interesting. My big gripe is that, excluding the two "bonus tracks" ending the disc ("Highway to Hell" and "For Those about to Rock"), they did every song off the Back in Black album, thus rendering the song selection very limited. Imagined if they'd had someone do "Rising Power", "Thunderstruck" or "Let There Be Rock" with an acoustic guitar and female vocals!

5 out of 5 stars Acoustic Back in Black.......2003-04-20

This is the 2nd stellar acoustic rendering of AC/DC's work. The first was Mark Kozelek's "What's Next to the Moon" that featured only Bon Scott-era tunes. "Backed in Black" features female artists performing the "Back in Black" album on acoustic guitar, with no bass or drums or any other instruments. These are serious, soulful renditions by artists who respect the original versions. This album is a must for my fellow AC/DC fanatics. (Caveat: buy this album and Kozelek's album instead of the subpar "Hillbilly Tribute to AC/DC".)

This guy's sure come a hell of a long way since his 'Rick Rock' days in Chapel Hill, NC when my oldest brother-in-law used to play drums in his band. Who knew that Parth would get this big?! (Well, I'm sure P. Hux did!!)

Good album .... but then again, it's P. Hux, so how could it not be???

5 out of 5 stars Outrageously unique tribute to the Brummies by US genius.......2006-04-13

In 1998, P. Hux (or Parthenon Huxley, as he is known to some) joined ELO Part II. So, he's well-familiar with the songs he covers on this CD. However, this jack-in-the-box makes these songs totally his own by delivering the most unusual cover versions imaginable.
        P. Hux was asked by Lakeshore Records to do a tribute album to ELO, to which he obliged. But he doesn't cover the songs faithfully - oh no! He delivers renditions which break the original ELO music down into little pieces and re-assemble the songs in the "P. Hux Way"!
Some of the songs are beautiful acoustic-only renditions which show the sheer songwriting quality of the ELO - sometimes slightly overblown - originals. Cases in point are "10538 Overture", "Showdown" or "Strange Magic". They sound as if they were unreleased songs by Donovan.
In some cases, P. Hux chooses to go with a group arrangement, but in a way that he sees fit. And what does he make of these songs? ELO for the 21st Century, that's what! "Diary of Horace Wimp" or "Mr. Blue Sky" are perfect examples of this.
But the strangest - and maybe most brilliant - cover is that of "Don't Bring Me Down", the eternal disco stomper which you couldn't get away from no matter how you tried. His version is one that the Goons - yes, THE Goons - would be proud of. P. Hux totally deconstructs the song. You hear an instrument here and an instrument there - but never together. All the verses are SPOKEN with a stiff-upper-lip English accent, while the choruses deliver perfect harmony singing that would make the Beach Boys green with envy. The closest comparison would be Peter Sellers' renditions of Beatles songs such as "She Loves You", "Can't By Me Love" and "A Hard Day's Night" recorded in 1965 at Abbey Road under the auspices of George Martin. That's how funny this version is!
All said, P. Hux produces a totally left-field album full of songs you can tell he truly loves and wants to give a total makeover. If ELO called one of their albums "Discovery", this one here might just as well be called "Re-Discovery". Go, (re)discover!
(Find out more about P. Hux at www.parthenonhuxley.com)

4 out of 5 stars After all - It is a homemade spaceship.......2005-06-09

        P. Hux is NOT Jeff Lynne, and he does not try to be. Nor is this ELO part 2. Hux offers a different rendition of each song.
10538 - a great acoustic version; I liked this version the first time I heard it.
Mr. Blue Sky - Hux did take his foot off the gas on this one. The more I listen to this version, the better I like it.
Showdown - strictly acoustic with no percussion, it is much more melancholy than ELO's version(s).
Can't Get It Out Of My Head - a beautiful rendition by Hux; I love the violin and the electric guitar solos.
Telephone Line - being my fave ELO song, I have to remind myself that this is Hux not someone to parrot the great Lynne. This version is growing on me.
Sweet Talkin' Woman - as Hux wrote in the liner, this song whispered "let's waltz." This is not the Out of the Blue spaceship.
Evil Woman - "meets Black Sabbath." One of my favorites on this CD. A pretty cool violin intro included.
Ma-ma-ma Belle - this is nothing like the heavy ELO version; Hux almost sings in a whisper, playing only the acoustic guitar.
Strange Magic - a beautiful Hux version.
Diary of Horace Wimp - acoustic version with a cool ending.
Do Ya - again, another acoustic version, which I really like; my children think this is a popular green ogre singing this song to his love ("Fiona").
Don't Bring Me Down - I won't spoil this one; you've got to hear this version.
I gave this 4 stars and would have given it 5, but I wanted to be conservative. If you buy this, expecting to hear ELO or ELO part 2, then you could be disappointed. Myself being an ELO fan since 1975, I liked this CD better, after I listened to it four or five times.
