5 out of 5 stars Listening to Rattlesnakes will make you smarter.......2007-03-09

I first bought "Rattlesnakes" when it was released in 1984 and immediately loved it for its catchy songs and intelligent lyrics. While Morrissey was introducing his gloomy following to Oscar Wilde, Lloyd Cole had his listeners finding information about Truman Capote, Norman Mailer, Simone DeBouvoir, Grace Kelly, Greta Garbo and Eva Marie Saint. This album will make you smart if you care to understand all the literary and cultural references. What exactly is a "Grace Kelly car"? How do you know if you're "looking like a friend of Truman Capote/Looking exactly like you are."? Lloyd Cole lyrics are smart, funny, clever and deep. It is not surprising then that Tori Amos covered the song "Rattlesnakes" on her "Strange Little Girls" album or that Camera Obscura wrote the song "Lloyd, I'm Ready To Be Heartbroken" in response to the closing track "Are You Ready to Be Heartbroken?" There is not a bad song on this album.

5 out of 5 stars so good.......2007-01-27

a huge gap exists between the strength of this album and the recognition it gets. it is a true classic, for my money the best album of the decade bar none. buy it.

5 out of 5 stars A Stone-cold Classic.......2006-11-05

This is the best album I've heard in years. I'm so glad I bought it. "Rattlesankes," "Speed Boat," "Perfect Skin" and "Charlotte Street" are simply brilliant songs, but of the whole album, there's not a loser in the bunch. It fits together and flows perfectly.

The Commotions' music is close to a lot of what was bubbling underground during 83-87, such as Echo and the Bunnymen, REM, The Smiths and '86-87 Cure - all jangle-pop and silvery guitars. For his part, Cole pre-empts Morrissey's lyrical allusions and crooning by nearly a year. The lyrics are hauntingly high-brow and intellectual, but in playful, clever and endearing ways.

All-in-all, this album is an overlooked gem that has simply gotten better and better with each spin. I can't get enough of it. Brilliant.

5 out of 5 stars A Turning Point in my Musical Direction.......2006-07-17

It was 1984, and Metal ruled my life. Def Leppard and UFO were my bands of choice. Then, a cook where I worked handed me an unassuming Cassette called "Rattlesnakes" by Lloyd Cole.
From the opening of Perfect skin I was hooked. I played that tape a thousand times that year. There is not a weak cut on this album, period. To call it a perfect album is not far-fetched. It morphed me in a new musical direction. The Del-Lords, Lloyd Cole and the Beat Farmers ruled my 1980's. I love this album, and still play it pretty regularly. Cole is as great live as he is on record, just to mention. An absolute must to own.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent from beginning to end.......2006-05-18

When I first discovered this brilliant album back in 1984 I could not get enough of it - listening to it hundreds of times in just a few months. All these years later it holds up perfectly. If this was released now no doubt Cole would probably be a superstar...well hopefully not a modern superstar but you know what I mean. One of the most under listened to albums of the 1980's. Honestly I cannot think of a decade like the 80's without Rattlesnakes. Thanks Lloyd.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Julie Burchill's loss.......2006-05-12

With its debonair lyrics and cool arrangements this is the first Lloyd Cole album to listen to. Perfect Skin, Forest Fire and Rattlesnakes made a classic debut set of superb singles, and Are You Ready To Be Heartbroken? could easily have been a fourth (an earlier version nearly became their first single and is included on the second disc).

Much is made of the cinematic and literary references, but far from being pretentious this seems an accurate reflection of the kinds of allusions made in normal conversations of the time. According to the illuminating sleeve notes to which all the band contribute, Julie Burchill remarked in her album review that she had no use for a country and western Velvet Underground, showing that she was as off-target regarding the Commotions as she was on everything else.

Although the album has been re-issued before with B-sides as bonus tracks, this time the original album is the sole incumbent of disc one and so there is a natural close at the album's end, enabling it to be enjoyed as an entity.

The second disc gathers together all the B-sides from the 7" and 12" versions of the three singles: The Sea And The Sand/You Will Never Be No Good from Perfect Skin; Andy's Babies (about Warhol's Factory acolytes) and Glory (a Television cover) from Forest Fire. Sweetness was thought by the band to be too good to be a B-side but at the time was hurriedly recorded in Wales while they were touring, when they needed something to back the Rattlesnakes single (the single's third track, Four Flights Up, was taken from the album). Jesus Said was recorded in Islington in early 1985 with Paul Hardiman, who produced the first album, and so belongs here, but it didn't get released until 1987 when it became the flip of My Bag (although Lloyd Cole prefers it to anything on the second album, Easy Pieces). One live favourite, Beautiful City, was left off the album but the outtake is included here (as well as a live version).

The only released track missing is the lovely 12" version of Forest Fire (about 45 precious seconds longer than the album version), though a shorter one-take Maida Vale session version from Radio One's Evening Session is included. Two other tracks from the same session add Jocelyn Pook and Audrey Riley on violin and cello, and there is a live-to-air performance of Patience for Saturday Live, from Broadcasting House's sub basement S2 studio (I think Lloyd Cole's comments for Forest Fire in the notes actually refer to this earlier session).

Also previously unreleased are the demo for Perfect Skin and five live recordings from 1984 and 1985. These were recorded at Nightmoves, the Marquee and Glasgow's Barrowlands, some for radio broadcast.

4 out of 5 stars A LITTLE DISAPPOINTED.......2005-07-06

THE ONLY REASON I RATED THIS COLLECTION 4 STARS INSTEAD OF 5 IS BECAUSE I HAD MOST OF THESE RECORDINGS ALREADY ON THE IMPORT OF RATTLESNAKES AND 12" B-SIDES. I GUESS IT'S NICE TO HAVE THE B-SIDES ON CD. THE LIVE TRACKS I CAN LIVE WITHOUT. THE ALBUM ITSELF DESERVES 5 STARS. I WAS JUST DISAPPOINTED WITH WHAT LITTLE EXTRA I GOT FOR THE PRICE I PAID. BUT THAT'S JUST ME. IF YOU DON'T ALREADY HAVE THESE EXTRA TRACKS THEN THE PRICE IS WORTH IT.

5 out of 5 stars No Mailer, Just a New Tailor!.......2005-01-13

I was hooked on this album by an ultra-hip friend back in 1985 (a little late, but then I'm like that with music....). It sounded (and still does) like nothing else around, the lyrics were intelligent, quirky, and ceaselessly engaging, and it's makers did not shy from the elegance of string arrangements. In fact, it could be argued that this album almost single-handedly wrested the orchestra back from the schmatlz meisters and made it hip again. One of my other all-time favorites, "The Lexicon of Love" by new romantic northern soul outfit ABC, had two short years before launched the singularly talented Ann Dudley into the pop arranging world. (NOTE- that also-incomparable work was given the "Deluxe" treatment by Universal at the end of 2004) . While Martyn Fry of ABC had shared a witty, quirky, and self-consciously-literate approach to lyrics with our Mr. Cole, the styles of the two groups were markedly different. In theory, that could certainly test the scope and flexibility of an arranger. Ms. Dudley's work on both albums is sublime and is in both cases a major ingredient in their respective successes.

Though the album was reported by critics at time of it's release to be country-influenced, the music herein is respectably informed and defies categorization other than that bastard moniker "alternative rock". Obvious influences on composition and playing run the gamut from Glen Campbell/Jimmy Webb, Chet Atkins, and Duane Eddy through to Jimmy Smith, Bob Dylan and Bo Diddley. One of the awesome things about the newly mastered original album is that new subtleties are apparent in the recordings and these very subtleties are distinguishing the songs stylistically to a much greater extent than I remember from my much-played, much-treasured vinyl copy. In fact, it is a credit to the producer (Paul Hardiman) that these songs hold together so effortlessly in this collection! The most obvious "odd man out" here is "Patience", a take on frustrated love and/or personal shortcomings that utitlizes a Bacharach-influenced approach in it's recording as well as string arrangement. It could easily fit with an R&B set, and Lloyd allowed himself to sound not only vulnerable but pretty as well. Somehow it fits in with the rest, don't ask me... I chalk it up to a sparing approach in the rhythm section and Lloyd's singular voice. In any case, I love the damn song and am no longer embarrased to say so.

"Are You Ready to Be Heartbroken?", "Perfect Skin" , and "Forest Fire" have all received airplay in the Uk and are known to fans who've purchased "Lloyd Cole and the Commotions 1984-89" (RIP), so let me add that EVERY track on this gem is a winner! In fact, I like a couple non-hit album tracks here substantially more than those mentioned. "2CV" is simple, haunting and gorgeous, "Speedboat" is menacing and haunting and somewhat enigmatic in it's story of an on-the-edge couple and their never-mentioned demise. With "Four Flights Up" we get a witty Dylan-inspired take on what could be any couple, but the tongue-in-cheek (I think...) melodrama of the narrator makes it sound like the most doomed relationship on Earth. On that note I have to add that Lloyd the lyricist offers dense and slippery tellings that often are not what they seem (or are they?). Lyrics you can chew on for years with instant, often dark, humour and hooks as accessible as trouble...

The second disc here offers an assortment of demos, live recordings, bbc session recordings, and Mr. Cole's much-rated b-sides, almost always top-of-the-line material that makes you wonder how they ever decided in the first place. For that matter we get commentary from all of the band on just that very subject (and others) in the substantial c.d. booklet, along with rare original photos from the period. While "Rattlesnakes" (nicknamed a "student bedsit classic") will probably never get a "straight" following, it indeed gets a re-tailoring worthy of Armani while retaining all of it's original swagger.

I recommend for ANYONE who loves music!

5 out of 5 stars Don't It Make You Smile ?.......2004-12-11

Lloyd Cole and the Commotions were formed in Glasgow in 1982 and released "Rattlesnakes", their debut album, two years later. Despite being praised wildly by the UK's 'indie' music press from the outset, it also proved to be an excellent album. Cleverly written, "Rattlesnakes" also features more catchy tunes than a debut album is generally entitled to.

For this 20th Anniversary release, the "main" album has been remastered - though the track listing remains the same. It opens with "Perfect Skin", one of the band's best known and most fondly remembered songs. (It even merits a mention in "The Crow Road", by Ian Banks). It's followed directly by the album's title track - a lively number that namechecks Eve Marie Saint and Simone de Beauvoir. It's also one of the songs that benefits hugely from Anne Dudley's superb string arrangements. "Mission Street" and "2cv" are a little more introspective, while "Forest Fire" (I'm reliably informed) features a Bo Diddly drumbeat. "Four Flights Up" just about makes it as my favorite song on the album - another lively track, the lyrics always make me smile. ("Must you tell me all your secrets when it's hard enough to love you knowing nothing ?").

The bonus disc contains 18 tracks, is nearly an hour long and is made up of demos, live tracks, radio sessions, b-sides and an out-take. Only three tracks from the 'main' CD ("Down on Mission Street", "Charlotte Street" and "Forest Fire") don't make a second appearance here. However, the out-take is a track called "Beautiful City" which was recorded for the original album but dropped. To make up for the oversight, the version that would've made the album and a live version feature. Two of the other live tracks were recorded at Glasgow's Barrowlands - the crowd's reaction to "2cv" gives some indication to how popular the band were at the time.

For anyone who's a fan of the band or album, I would definitely recommend picking this up. As well as the bonus CD, it comes with a small booklet the band have put together covering their memories of the songs and recording sessions. (There's even mention of tennis matches against the Sisters of Mercy - who'd have pictured that !?!). However, with or without the extras, "Rattlesnakes is simply a must-have album : it doesn't sound twenty years old !

5 out of 5 stars VERY VERY NICE!.......2004-12-03

I don't know exactly why this isn't being released in the US, but any Lloyd Cole fan will be absolutely thrilled with the repackaging of this classic debut album. Amazon US did not leave info for the second disc, but below is the tracklisting for the deluxe edition. The remastered disc one is worth it alone - what a difference. Also, if you want to save $20.00, goto Amazon UK - the price for everything with shipping only came out to just under $30.00. Between the booklet, remastering and bonus material - it is worth every penny. Ten Thumbs Up.

Product Description

At a time when it's difficult to find quality music for children, Mr. Nicky is a welcome solution. He writes songs that reach kids right where they're at. In his latest CD, Rattlesnakes for Breakfast, Mr. Nicky thoroughly entertains, engages and educates children. His artistic style and creative flair make him a hit with parents as well as kids. The songs are genuine, worthwhile, and downright hilarious. In featured songs such as Nerds and Weirdos, Mr. Nicky talks about how every human being is special and unique. Even the people we might think are strange are valuable. As Mr. Nicky puts it: "Without the nerds and weirdos we could never get along/'Cause the nerds made our computers and the weirdos wrote our songs"! In the song Fireman, he tells the story of a boy who grew up to follow his dream of becoming a fireman, despite the negativity of others. Then in Bullies, Mr. Nicky presents another fun song with a character building message about dealing with mean kids. His experience as a teacher allows him to focus on topics kids can really relate to. When so much of the media offers so little for children, Mr. Nicky's music stands out as a desirable alternative for anyone looking for quality entertainment for their kids

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Mr Nicky Rattlesnakes 4 Breakfast.......2006-08-24

Fun, goofy, unique and mostly up-beat songs for preteens - the title is a give-away how Mr. Nicky approaches his music. Primarily simple acoustic guitars with other instruments prn (e.g. clarinet). My children are 8 and 10.

5 out of 5 stars BEST KIDS ALBUM EVER.......2006-07-27

OK, so i might not be an expert on children's albums- but this is silly without being abnoxious; This is funny without reaching; and this is tender without being sappy.

this record is VERY easy to listen to- and is catchy- without being annoying.

Mr Nicky uses his childlike imagination to craft together songs that the whole family can enjoy over and over and over and over.

thank you Mr. Nicky.

5 out of 5 stars My whole family is singing these songs!.......2006-04-28

This CD is awesome. My kids have only had the CD a few days and already have all the songs memorized. The don't even realize all the science they are learning. I highly recommend!!

5 out of 5 stars Super fun music with a message!!!.......2005-11-19

We adore Rattle Snakes for Breakfast, by Mr. Nicky! My twin five-year old daughters know each song almost word for word. His messages in such songs like Nerds and Weirdo's has made them conscience of others around them and how we all somehow fit and work in this world. The song Bullies brings front and center that being kind and good to others not only is decent but it eliminates the creation of a Bully. Even though a lesson can be learned from most of the songs, they are still entertaining. We sing them in the car even if we left the CD in the player at home. I love the fact that this is music that opens the lines of communication between Parent and Child.
I laugh, and feel such joy when I hear my Children's laughter from their sheer enjoyment. Mr. Nicky brought fun and learning back into music. Imagine getting that for just a small amount. Compared to all the other high priced games and toys for Christmas this year, this CD Far out weighs them in value; it will be the least expensive, yet smartest gift you can give!

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous Children's CD.......2005-11-18

Mr. Nicky is an extremely talented musician and singer. One of his songs, "Too Many Beans" has spent some time on XMKids's top 13 list at #1 after moving up the charts over the course of several weeks. Lots of people like a good fart song, but the fact that this song, while great, is the most popular should not detract from the rest of the CD. It's truly wonderful. The songs are clever, funny, and often quite sweet. XMKids plays three other songs pretty often ("Song of the Sun", "Nerds and Weirdos", and "Fireman"), but they've missed out on even more! "Bullies"; the title track, "Rattlesnakes for Breakfast"; "Sorry Mom and Dad"; and especially "Radio Song" are also tremendously fun. My son is almost three now, and he loves Mr. Nicky. We've bought cds for friends, and everyone loves it. At this price, you can't go wrong, so try it out. Your kids will love them, and I defy you not to start singing the songs yourselves.

Description

Hot Rattlesnakes is a reissue of a classic out of print Acid Mothers Temple-related CD. Pressed in a limited quantity in the UK, it sold out almost immediately and currently commands high prices on ebay and is whispered about in hushed tones from those who have actually heard it. Guitarist Kawabata Makoto brings along Acid Mothers Temple cohorts Tsuyama Atsushi (Zoffy, Omoide Hatoba) and Ichiraku Yoshimitsu for one of the most out there power trio recordings ever. While certainly close to Acid Mothers Temple in sound and feeling, Hot Rattlesnakes certainly exists in its own little corner of the Acid Mothers Temple galaxy.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars rocks with hypnotic, psychadelic, lush power.......2006-12-06

3 extended tracks with virtually NOTHING in the way of voice, lots of overdriven powerful soloing over trance-inducing riffs and you have a typical Acid Mother's Temple product.
Kawabata is often lauded as a guitar hero par-excellance, and while I can't say he's technically supreme - his noodling skills are QUITE enjoyable, but no one is breaking the bounds of rock expectations here.
I sometimes think Stereolab might sound like this if they were better musicians.
And Faust at times DID sound like this, but were more interested in messing with your head then giving you a nice piece of music to groove to.

This CD is NOT so hard to get anymore having been given another US distributer. MVD .

Enjoy.

    5 out of 5 stars Simply Amazing.......2005-02-03

This album is the best album I have ever heard in my life. It's really changed things for me and my family. At first we were poor and stupid, now we are poor and rocking!

    4 out of 5 stars Rude Awakening.......2003-08-19

Well I must admit I was a little bit dissapointed when I first got this cd in the mail. I figured that with a name like the Rasta-Snakes this band HAD TO deliver the goods with some sweet reggae jams. Imagine my surprise then when they turned out to be some sort of "rock roll" band instead. After getting over my inital shock, however, this record started to grow on me. If you like loud songs where things happen and people shout about stuff I would totally recommend this record. My only complaint would be with the drumming which sounds like it was drummed by a douche.

5 out of 5 stars What rock and roll can and should be.......2003-01-08

This album is a miracle of rock n roll creation. Its thirteen explosive tracks are hard and aggressive without hurting the ears and fun and catchy without selling out to current pop mediocrity. I especially recommend track 1 (I, Explode) and 3 (Radio Dead), but every song is a gem. Get this album if your soul longs for high density, high intensity, unadulterated rock.

          Album Description

"Catching Rattlesnakes" offers a sound beyond traditional Folk/Americana. Zach Huskey's new cd is a culmination of excellent song writing and creative presentation. These "folk" songs contain elements of rock, blues and country/western with eclectic non-traditional percussion instruments.
