5 out of 5 stars A Dark Pageant.......2006-05-15

I've been with Laibach since their early days on Wax Trax! Records. Few musical artists have successfully created a world of their own with their own self expressive manefesto, yet Laibach seems to have cultivated a "lifestyle" unto itself. Like haujobb or :Wumpscut: Laibach isn't for everybody; they exist in a parallel universe that is darker, richer, and considerably more ominous than what we expect from approachable EBM/IDM.

Has there ever been a more lovely and majestic paean as "The Great Seal?" Never before have I heard an anthem of such spacious grandeur. Truly a extraordinary moment in modern industrial music.

For those who prefer more serious minded theater-of-the-mind, "Opus Dei"(and "Slovenska Akropola") are the preeminent soundtracks for your cerebral hinterland.

3 out of 5 stars fairly good.......2005-09-08

LAibach certainly have an interesting approach. The way that they turn vapid pop songs into pseudo-fascist marching music is quite striking. Queen's "One Voice" seems an excellent choice for such a treatment, as with original lyrics intact, the meaning becomes incredibly unnerving when performed in German with a driving precessional beat. If one is looking for political meaning, the bands message may seem a bit garbled. If one takes this as a comment on the reverence and allegiance shown by fans to their pop icons, however, the message is appropriately unnerving

5 out of 5 stars Absolute Musical Brilliance.......2005-08-04

This is the lone Laibach album I own at this point, but I plan to remedy that. This is quickly becoming one of my favorite albums in my collection. Laibach brings Melody to harsh Industrial in this album, making what I'd call Military Industrial. With the horns, the military-esque beats, and the deep German vocals, it turns out being a great listen to all Industrial lovers.

5 out of 5 stars Fans Of Rammstein Take Notice.......2005-01-12

Former Yugoslavian group LAIBACH has to be one of the most mysterious, yet artful bands to ever come out of Europe. Their controversial use of imagery (which heavily leans on fascism and even nazism) might put some people off, but it's more of a shock value thing. The music is even harder to describe. This album in particular, "Opus Dei" sees the band at their most "rock oriented" phase. Combining classical arrangements with militaristic drum machines and a voice that might have been the true influence for RAMMSTEIN, this album is an oppressive, dark, yet funny musical statement. The band cover "life is Life", originally by Euro Rock band OPUS DEI, in two versions: english and german. But both versions differ greatly in the arrangement of music and excecution. The german version sounds hilarious (taken into account that you DO remember the original's happy-go-lucky singing style!)and sounds as heavy as it can get! The music on this album could be best described as "Industrial", but it too differs greatly from other so called "industrial" bands such as MINISTRY, NIN, EINSTURZENDE NEUBAUTEN and even RAMMSTEIN. The music is incredibly heavy, without becoming "heavy metal", although some songs do have that "metal guitar" sound.
This was the second LAIBACH album I heard and it has become one of my favorite, if not MY favorite. It's diverse, heavy, dark, brooding and yes, even funny (the band also cover QUEEN's "one nation" in "geburt einer nation"). If you're looking for something fresh and out of the ordinary, then check LAIBACH!

first: putting those runours to rest...i know a person who met them-spent time with them and they are what can be considered UBER ANTI NAZI! the success of the sounds on this album is only a strong testament to it - they are the punks of the state rule and they state that their music is such as to raise dissent against the state through mockery and p**s takes - while these guys were in their own way doing something about opression they were also making great music and having a great time...this album was the birth of true industrial/evo/revolution in sounds! you wont be disappointed and this CD is a perfect place to start at in your laiback collection

Monteverdi's Fourth Book of Madrigals for five voices was a real ground-breaking work: the composer tossed aside the rules of classical counterpoint and harmony, making the music subservient to the text it delivered--creating extraordinary pictorial and emotive effects that are surprising even today. Here's just one example: in "Si, ch'io vorrei morire," the voices enter successively on the line "Ahi, car'e dolce lingua" ("Ah, dear sweet tongue"), each voice extending its phrase while the next two voices above enter in their turn, the lines caressing and colliding with each other like the tongues of kissing lovers, the dissonant suspensions like frissons of passion. Concerto Italiano's performance is a revelation: each quicksilver change in tempo or volume is beautifully judged, yet sounds completely spontaneous and natural. --Matthew Westphal

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A stunning recording.......2005-07-04

If I had to single out one recording of madrigals to recommend this might quite possibly be it. The performances by Alessandrini and Concerto Italiano are everything the critics have been raving about for a number of years now. They really do take the cake when it comes to being the outstanding madrigal performers of our times - although we now have La Venexiana, who can be put on the same level. The singing here represents a degree of refinement in expressive eloquence that is previously unheard of in this repertoire. This makes this CD gripping listening from start to finish even though all works are sung a capella.

The recording is also well up to the usual high standards of Opus 111.

5 out of 5 stars Fresh, luminous and touching!.......2005-06-14

The best book of Monteverdi sung the very best by the best singers.
This crew - which main members now sing in La Venexiana - must have some strange affinity to Monteverdi! It never sounds 'old' or 'ancient'; you feel rather that Monteverdi is some modern composer, or you feel how young his inventive style must have been felt by his contemporaries. Concerto Italiano - i.e. until the mid 90ies - had some kind of 'analytical' approach, slow, high definition, sophisticated, clear, fresh, young, shining - like the first spring! This luxury production never feels cold or boring, from the first madrigals, 'Ah dolente partita', 'Cor mio' and so on, it is very, very touching. A more happy madrigal like 'A un giro sol de' bell'occhi lucenti' is really a wonder. Rossana Bertini's shrill soprano is specially striking. Highly recommended! I also recommend The second book - Amazon: B0000260SF - by the same group and The third book - Amazon: B00006B1R7- by La Veneziana; almost the same crew and surely the same style.

5 out of 5 stars A very musical and lively recording........1998-12-16

Concerto Italiano gives a refreshing interpretation of Monteverdi's madrigals. Apart from being a well and musically sung recording, it is the expression of the lyrics which makes this CD unique. From listening it is clear that the madrigals were meant to be sung this way: One hears the birds, the wind, the sea and, of course, many lamenting lovers. (Be sure to keep the booklet handy when listening !)

Although the revival of renaissance music has produced many nice recordings (i.e. Kirby), these all seem a bit academic now. Also the other CD-s by this ensemble are worthwhile, but this one is the top. Thank you Concerto Italiano !

    Album Description

The "Code of the Goddess" is an inspired musical exploration of the story from the best-selling novel, "The Da Vinci Code," by Dan Brown, featuring favorite works and new material from Laura Powers, creator of the Legends of the Goddess CD trilogy. A rich tapestry of elegantly layered arrangements interweaves beautiful melodies and mystical lyrics, creating songs that seem to spring from the souls of the characters we've come to know from the novel. This collection offers a perfect introduction to Laura's Celtic-infused music. It has become the soundtrack to my days, a musical companion on my own life journey. Celebrating feminine power and the beauty of the goddess tradition, Laura's earth-and-fire vocals blend with ethereal instrumentation, creating sensuous dreamscapes that transport you to another time, another place. I highly recommend it.

    5 out of 5 stars Beautiful & uplifting..........2006-03-20

"Code of the Goddess" takes the characters of the "Da Vinci Code" by Dan Brown and breathes musical life into them. After enjoying the book so much the songs in this CD bring another element to the people and storyline of the book. No vague instrumentals and noodling here--These are songs that stand up on their own and to repeated listening. Opus Dei, The Mystic and the Muse, and the lovely "Heart in Winter" (Sophie's song is in both French and English--I recognize Pachabel's Canon in the song) are standouts. If there is no audio here I found sound clips on the artist's website. Well done--packaging is nice, too.

I absolutely LOVE this CD. There isn't a single track that I don't love listening to ... at home, while working, in the car ... it's just one of those collections.

      Album Description

A distant precursor of Diderot and the creators of the Encyclopaedia Britannica, Herrad of Landsberg, abbess of the monastery of Mont Sainte-Odile at Hohenburg on the banks of the Rhine, compiled between 1159 and 1175 an encyclopaedia covering every aspect of human knowledge: the Hortus deliciarum or `garden of delights'. Amid sacred history, mythology, geography and much else, she gave prominence to music, thus making this superbly illuminated volume an essential source for the new tendencies that were beginning to emerge in the sacred chant of her time, the fertile twelfth century which witnessed the birth of both polyphony and liturgical drama, and which was also rich in forceful feminine personalities like Herrad hrself - women such as Heloise and Eleanor of Aquitaine. Or such as that other celebrated abbess, Hildegard of Bingen, the author of indescribably beautiful poems and melodies which still speak to us across the centuries. This richly varied programme built around these two exceptional women, Hildegard and Herrad, alongside excerpts from their own manuscripts, also offers a selection of repertories that they very probably knew, to form a new `garden of delights', tended by an Ensemble Discantus in more inspired form than ever with their skilful blend of female vocal timbres.

5 out of 5 stars Caution! Previously released material.......2003-03-15

All the tracks on this CD previously appeared in Rinaldo Alessandrini's Italian series (plus Handel's "Trionfo...") on OPUS 111 so there is nothing of interest here for those who have been collecting it religiously.Yet the price of the disc doesn't suggest a sampler release! I took it for granted that Mingardo, an artist of such a rare charisma had at last recorded a solo disc. She is one of those singers who immediately absorb our attention and brighten up even the most boring opera productions, so it is not hard to imagine that the same qualities would make her solo recital a winner. To me this disc is still a great opportunity to hear Mingardo in the repertoire she is mainly associated with, but it is a strange collection because many of the samples gathered here don't work too well outside the compositions they are extracted from. Besides, four tracks don't feature Mingardo at all which is a bit strange in a realease of this kind.Mingardo's art certainly deserves a better overview, particularly as her repertoire is not limited to the Italian baroque as this release might suggest, but until we finally get a solo disc from this marvellous contralto, this sampler is certainly worth exploring.

          Product Description

Laibach is a Slovenian experimental music group, strongly associated with industrial, martial and neo-classical. Laibach formed June 1, 1980 in Trbovlje, Slovenia. Laibach represents the music wing of the Neue Slowenische Kunst (NSK) art collective, of which it was a founding member in 1984. The name "Laibach" is the German name for Slovenia's capital city, Ljubljana. Laibach is known for their cover versions, which are often used to subvert the original message or intention of the song - most notable being their cover version of the song "Life is Life" on the album Opus Dei, which completely changes the meaning of the song from the original writers' intentions. Whereas the original is a feel-good hippie anthem, Laibach's subversive interpretation twists the melody into a sinister, rolling military march. The refrain is at one instance translated into German, giving an eerie example of the sensitivity of its lyrics to context. Opus Dei is the fourth album by Laibach. It was released in 1987. It features two cover versions - "Geburt einer Nation", a German cover of Queen's "One Vision" and two reworkings of Austrian band Opus' sole hit single "Life Is Life". The Opus song became the German language "Leben heißt Leben" and the English language "Opus Dei". The attention this album received from MTV and others led to Laibach's first worldwide tour.

If you are into Gregorian chanting, you will love this disc. It is uniformly spectacular and nothing but pure pleasure. I'm not sure how it could be any better. Hard to find and highly recommended.
