4 out of 5 stars Excellent album - Ghetto Blaster.......2006-10-09

I feel like this was the crusaders best album next to "Street Life". It has an 80's mainstream jazz vibe (of course, probably because it came in the mid 80's). I love the horn solos in Zala mini. The last song dream street is a great "mood" song, it is almost worth it to buy this cd for this last song.

All in all a great cd and one of Crusaders best.

4 out of 5 stars Good Album.......2004-07-25

Okay this is 1984 and VERY late in the day but there is
one classic cut here-the opening "Dead End",a fine funk jazz romp through everything this band does best! And Neon Ndugu Chancler's choice to leave George Duke's band for the
Crusaders added alot of excitment to the mix so how could this
album go wrong?Well maybe by filling it out with material not even half as interesting is a way to start.Good but not classic.

5 out of 5 stars Deserves well over 5 stars.........2003-07-27

Terri Wahl; vocals, guitar, Kerri Davis; vocals, guitar, Lesley Ishino; drums, Debi Martini; bass. Ah, where should I start? How to describe what I would call a rock n roll masterpiece. Loved by some and hated by many, the Red Aunts are one of the bands whose existence in the 90s I will never forget. Though I do not like to compare, to describe their sound I would say it sounds kind of like the Cramps, just not as silly. Each member in this band holds their own place in my heart as contributing the best they knew how. Usually the most overlooked instrument, the drums, Lesley Ishino is an outstanding drummer. They started out with a raunchy blues/punk sound and graduated with an album worthy of praise from those fans of this style of music. They made quite an impression on me when I heard their album "Saltbox" for the first time. Fast, explosive punk rock with that blues edge and screaming vocals, with songs so short, you wonder how much of a hurry they were in to record. Anyway, back to "Ghetto Blaster," such a seriously underrated album in this genre. Let me explain what I love about each song.
1. I'm Cryin'- The song starts out singing about a loss, then reveling in it by the end of the song, with very loud guitars, just listen closely to that twin guitar attack. watch out world.
2. Poison Steak-This song has a good melody, 'think I'm gonna kill you 'cause I cant forget you/gonna poison you tonight'
3. The Things You See/The Things You Don't- I once read this is one of 'the most annoying songs ever,' I will beg to differ. What you call annoying, I call one of the catchiest keyboard parts I have ever heard.
4. Midnight in the Jungle-The lyrics are fantastic, one of my favorite R. A songs ever. Very catchy guitar solo, 'I'm waiting on true love.,'
5. Exene-Upon the first listen, obviously inspired by one of my favorite female singers, Exene Cervenka from the all mighty bands X and the short-lived Auntie Christ. Guess you have to hear the vocals to understand what I mean, background ones sound like a ghost howling, fits so perfectly in this song. So Exene-like, vocal wise.
6. Fade In/Fade Out- I love how they give 'shout-outs' in their songs, so rare these days! I love the lines, 'your a pearl inside the sky/the world is your oyster/and I just stood their and cried..alone'
7. Alright!- The end of the song changes direction completely, morphs into what sounds like a completely different song, very freaking cool.
8. Who?- My favorite song musically, okay, well in between this one and M.I.the.J, the lines 'you will rot..', so enjoyable. once again, excellent guitars.
9. Skeleton Hand-No real description here, just cool.
10. Wrecked-One of the 'lovely' songs on here, about love gone wrong and lost, catchy keyboards and lyrics.
11. I'm Bored with You-About sums it up in the title, very short and right to the point =D
12. Cookin', Cleanin', and Cryin'- Mick Collins from the Screws sings backup on this one, EXCELLENT album closer, always blows my mind the way it changes direction so suddenly from slow to fast.
I think I have said it all. If you like ANY of their music, check this one out, and the Screws also. Featuring Terri Wahl and Kerri Davis (except this time around she plays the drums).
When I listen to this, it leaves me longing for more music by them. The only band I will listen to one album after another. My only complaint, along with the other albums, it ends all too soon! Rock out! I love you ladies!

5 out of 5 stars Damn that's good sshtuff........2000-01-06

Far, freakin-out. This album is phenomenal. If you have to cat. them, call them a cross between the Pixies and the B-52s. It's got the verve of post-punk sounds, with the injection of a decidedly female angle. Goddam, I'm impressed,,, and I'm so, so happy I have this cd in my ears and on my stereo.

5 out of 5 stars Once Again, the Red Aunts Show You How to Rawk!.......1999-11-24

The Red Aunts have done it again. On their fifth and final release, the Red Aunts bring back all of the sound that has made them so unique. Doing it for no one but themselves, the Aunts combine the slow and sad appeal of real old school country with a strong overcurrent of true guitar sound. They do it like no one else can, or ever will. One of my favorite tracks is the blueseque "Midnight In The Jungle" in which Kerri Davis's voice sounds almost haunting with the opening lines of the track. Overall, their bass and guitar work proves to be one of a kind, beatufifully entertwining with their infamous off- beat drumming. If you love the Red Aunts, this album a must. Not Riot girl or punk rock sound found here; the Red Aunts are truely unmatched and uncatagorizable.

1 out of 5 stars I Would Give This Zero Stars If I Could.......1999-05-28

This has got to be the WORST album that i have ever listened to. Not only is this a complete waste of money but time too. It's the ultimate bad riot grrl band with shrill screaming and badly written lyrics. In conclusion: it completely blows and has no redeeming value what so ever.

      4 out of 5 stars Junkmedia.org Review - Rhymes and hot beats.......2003-06-12

Ghetto Blaster, the second LP from Edgar Farinas, a.k.a. Push Button Objects, is hard to isolate from the current situation of independent hip-hop as a whole, given the record's supporting cast. Mr. Lif, Vast Aire, the Anticon collective, Del the Funkee Homosapien, Aesop Rock -- these emcees are key figures in indie rap's swiftly-solidifying hierarchy, and their ubiquitous presence on various compilations and collaborations has, at worst, brought the scene back to a state of pre-Cold Vein predictability. On Ghetto Blaster, the guest vocalists hit each track without breaking career stride: dope, creative rhymes, but nothing you haven't heard from this group before. But to dismiss the record on these grounds would be to mistake text for context, an unfair slight to Farinas, who brings serious skills to the boards throughout.

Push Button Objects makes beats for producers and for emcees, and compromises nothing on either side. "Hustlin'," Ghetto Blaster's opening track, flows from robotic chaos to Shadow-y sampling and atmospherics, a testament to the eclectic sound that runs throughout the album. The next two tracks, and especially the spare "Fly," bring the kind of beats that I imagine emcees hear in their dreams, beats that couldn't possibly stand without a crew getting together for a cipher session. PBO also knows how to match production to his featured vocalists, best exhibited on the Anticon cut "3 Doctors" and "Shut Down," which pits Aesop Rock against a beautiful guitar track.

For the most part, the instrumental tracks succeed as stand-alone productions, ranging from the haunting "Sleep" to the old-school electro of "Breaker's Delight." Ghetto Blaster ends with "Washington Ave.," which chops the urban congestion of "Hustlin'" into a serene head-nodder that perfectly sums up Push Button Object's sonic balance. The record, in the context of the hip-hop underground's present moment, isn't anything revolutionary, just hip-hop at its essence -- rhymes and hot beats.

I love this cd! Its hard but has lots of great intricate melodies that play off of eachother. The sounds are all really crisp and synthetic but put together in a real soulful and energetic way. The only thing I wish was that the song "Quiet Star" was included.

      LUCA MAINI's igloomag.com REVIEW ::

(04.10.06) I recently read, on a well known site, a description of today drum'n bass that was something like 'midrange bassline driven trance' in opposition to the purity of the so-called drumfunk, a branch of jungle that focuses on drum edits and minimalism. While such a critic description is justified if one sticks to Pendulum or Fresh, it's just a superficial look at a huge scene. My aim is to highlight a record that many may pass over because it's not up to date with the state of the art.

Cyantific began to impress a few years ago, they're a duo that introduced before everyone else some DSP effects on drums and vocals, nothing heavy and mental like Exile did, but it was indeed something fresh. They crossed d'n b with electro and you can hear such an influence very often, from the use of polished basslines in "Flashback" to the half tempo breakdown of "Ghetto Blaster." Recently Cyantific are following a widespread fashion that merges d'n b with disco sounds, but luckily they don't use cheap filtering and instead they rely on massive use of funky sampling, a constant feature of the middle of the album, from "Don't Follow" to "Power Surge." A particularly classic tune is "Cover Story" featuring Matrix and his Arp synth bass, a trademark that places him among my favorite producers of all time. The aptly named "Riviera," with an incredible bassline and samples from 50's movies, is tailored for low-riding a cabrio along the seaside on a sunny afternoon --too bad I have a citycar, I live one hundred miles from the sea and it has been raining for four days.

Ghetto Blaster includes a couple of early tracks that still stand out among the others, underlining how much Cyantific were ahead of their time but at the same time how they lost a bit of originality. I really like this record, but when I hear the electrified "Neon Skyline" (from 2003) I begin to think that maybe the duo should have decided to go forward in that direction, mixing 170 beats per minute with 80's aesthetics, as they show in the final track "Asia," deeply influenced by acid techno. But Cyantific are so skilled that they also make great old-school jungle tunes, both "Little Green Men" and "Solar Flares" are mesmerizing examples of modern hardcore, with "Solar Flares" being a sort of tribute to Jonny L's "Hurt U So." Drum'n bass influenced many artists who nowadays are under the spotlight doing breakcore and dubstep, but it's absolutely not dead, with a bit of patience it's possible to find fresh material even in 2006. Cyantific are my pick for this spring, and hopefully more interesting stuff will follow.

      5 out of 5 stars Sick!!!!!!.......2006-04-05

There is no other way to descibe it.

There are way too many great things coming out of Hospital Records, and Cyantific is nothing short of amazing with this release. Heavy hitting drum and bass with an original sound is what you'll get. At first listen I was into every track, yet moreso anxious to hear the next. This is must have if you like drum and bass, especially if all you have endevoured is High Contrast from Hospital Records.
I love High Contrast as much as the next guy, but this label has much more to offer. And if you haven't yet, check out Power Ballads by London Elektricity, WOW!

5 out of 5 stars for one things it's "Ghetto Blaster".......2006-04-03

silly people, who input this into the database. That said this album is great. Cyantific, aka CydeFX from John B's NuElectro Records, scores an awesome album here with each track flowing effortlessly into the next. buy on sight.
