Piffaro offers a wild romp through Flemish popular music!.......2002-11-25

"Instrumental music sounded in every corner of Flanders during the Renaissance," writes American scholar Keith Polk in the program notes. "... in any Flemish celebration or ritual, instruments and instrumental music were an indispensable element." If the period musicians were anything like the enthusiastic members of Piffaro, one can see why. The selections on this CD are a bit livelier than those on the group's earlier releases, evoking images of warm and boisterous feasts amongst revelers both high and low. Accompanied by hurdy gurdy, lutes, guitar and percussion, Piffaro's families of matched reed and brass instruments produce a distinctive and strident sound, mellowed by the continuity of breath pressure that is needed to play them, and tempered by the considerable skill of the performers. All in all, a feast for the ears! Other good, rousing feasting music can be found on the CD "A La Via: Street Music from the 13th to the 16th Centuries" by Ensemble Anonymous and Strada, and the Toronto Consort's "The Little Barley-Corne: Winter Revels from the Renaissance".

Shawms, Crumhorns, Sackbuts, Bagpipes, Lutes, & More!.......2002-07-15

You do NOT, repeat, do NOT need to be an expert on renaissance music to thoroughly enjoy this disk. The musicians show off the beauty of this music and have selected a very nice program.

I remember when I first heard wind music from this period performed and the reedy sound of the shawms and crumhorns and bagpipes and wonderful sound of the sackbuts. It became clear to me why old pipe organs sound like they do - this was the sound in the ears of the culture. Of course, this band performs this band shows off this music exceptionally well with their wonderful playing.

Also, there is an exceptionally nice booklet that accompanies this disk with photographs of the instrument families used in this disk as well as great notes about the group and the music recorded here.

The group has several other disks that you can obtain to extend your enjoyment of this music.

Piffaro Delivers Again.......2000-03-25

Like their other CDs, Piffaro's "Flemish Feast" is well-programmed, whimsical, and exquisitely performed. I personally find the first part of this CD a little heavy on the bagpipe, although others enjoy this a great deal. The lute and harp selections with and without recorder stand out as being particularly well-done. Having performed a concert of Flemish music in the not-so-distant past, I can address one possible comment: "Why are there FOUR tracks called 'T'andernaken'?" These are actually only three of a possible hundred or two. T'andernaken was a very popular ground or cantus firmus to use in Flanders at this time, and everyone had a go at it, including King Henry VIII. The recorder selections are organ-like, as usual, and the shawm/sackbut/dulcian (or "loud band") numbers are festive. Another wonderful selection from a great group.

Stunning! Wonderful Music for Every Day.......2002-11-29

Believe it or not, I own the gigantic Complete Mozart Collection by Phillips. I bought it soon after it was released a decade ago. Sometimes I wonder if maybe I should have spent the money on something else, but then I would not have been exposed to all of Mozart's amazing piano pieces.

I am most grateful to have these piano variations in my life. Mitsuko Uchida's interpretations are just astonishing. Her touch, timing and feeling is just impacting. It's like falling in love with the most beautiful person in the world. Ingrid Haebler and Tom Koopman are virtuosos too. If you play these while driving your car, don't be surprised if you find yourself sitting in your car after you have parked to hear a piece all the way to the finish, and almost feeling your heart pounding with emotion. Some of these variations are absolutely stunning.

From my perspective, Mozart's piano works for solo or smaller ensembles (sonatas, variation, trios, etc.) represent nearly his finest works. Experts rank his concertos, symphonies and operas (all with large ensembles) as his greatest works, but my experience is that his piano works for smaller ensembles and solo are masterpieces on their own. I have been listening to Mozart's complete works for a decade, and I personally enjoy his piano works the most for my own listening pleasure.

I also very highly recommend the Mozart piano sonatas collection. Very highly! The piano trios and quartets are great, too.

I think it's very sad that these Mozart pieces are not so well known. They are masterpieces of great beauty.

I remember one time when I told a friend's wife about these Mozart piano recordings. Her father was a professional concert pianist, and she plays piano really well. She owns two excellent pianos - one grand and one upright. I told her about these recordings, and she said she did not care much for Mozart piano pieces - she did not know much about Mozart - and that Beethoven was her favorite.

So I made her a couple tape recordings of some of the Mozart sonatas and variations just to get her interested, and a month later she told me she was completely blown away. Several years later I ran into her, and she said she was still listening to Mozart on piano and was so grateful for introducing Mozart piano works into her life. Mozart is now her favorite.

If you enjoy the sound of static, buy this!!.......2006-10-17

The sound quality is so poor in this recording that it is difficult at best to enjoy. I suppose if you play your music at extremely low volume, or are used to listening on a poor quality stereo (think victrola sound), then maybe you could get past the static noise. Quite a shame, considering what a masterfully performed, complete set this makes.

Full Price for a Boxset of Mono Records That Comes in 8.......2005-12-15

There is an Amazon.com review (on Annie Fischer's Complete Beethoven Sonatas) which says Geiseking's Mozart are all "faceless and anonymous". As I don't really know when I will finish listening to them all, I am really in no position to say one way or the other.

After having heard more than half of them, my first impression is, his playing is very disciplined, yet with a lot of grace and style. But contrary to what one may expect, Geiseking could also be surprisingly slow in tempo at times. Yes, he could be poetic too, but he hardly swings. His 511, for instance, could perhaps be a little more poetic. His left hand, perhaps rightly so for Mozart, never thunders. But when the drama of the music requires so, it could be very explosive. Otherwise, his left hand is always at least one step down if not two, be it harmonic or polyphonic...

I don't refer to Geiseking's Mozart that often as I like his Songs Without Words better, and I like his Debussy even more. His Beethoven Piano Concerto No. 5 is one of the best that one could expect. Finally on the recording. For recording of the 50's with such a label concerning an artist of his stature, I'm afraid the sound quality is somewhat below expectation. All in all, I expect the price of these historic recordings to come down a bit for the benefit of all Mozart lovers.

Cool, but profound........2003-01-03

While his piano sonatas and variation works are often recorded, I tend to have the most fun in playing the lesser known works that often give the most direct view on Mozart's genius. Looking through the catalogue I had little doubt that Gieseking's collection would give me the most bang for the buck (check out the German Amazon site) and good old Walter did not disappoint.

In old mono recordings that are noisy, lack soundstage, yet sound surprisingly well, Gieseking offers us an almost complete edition of all Mozart's works for solo piano. His style that can best be described as clear, cool and very precise, approaches Mozart from a decidedly non-romantic, non-neurotic perspective. In short: a perfect Uchida antidote.

Giesekings tempos in the Sonatas tend to be at the high side, but his exemplary technique -what a left hand!- prevents the interpretations from ever sounding stressed. Although I can pick some instances where a little more involvement could have paid off, e.g. in the small funeral march KV 453a or in the c-minor Fantasie KV 396, one of Goulds rare Mozart miracles, the playing throughout is exemplary.

All those who claim that Gieseking would be too cold only need to listen to this version of the great a-minor sonata KV310. While it clearly stays within the boundaries of classicism it is on par with Lipatti's version in delivering a direct and profound dramatic statement.

This classic has been in the catalogue for 50 years and for many more to come. I hope that more of Gieseking's Bach performances will find their way to the cd, since the clarity and drive that his Mozart interpretations exude must have resulted in some great Bach.

Mozart at his best.......2000-06-17

These interpretations of Mozart have been part of my library since I was 14, back in the 70's. Originally issued by Angel in the mid 50's, they were rereleased on Seraphim, which was then the budget label for Angel.

Listening to these recordings, one cannot help but notice the attention Gieseking gives to the steady timing. He does not take the liberties that other pianists have been known to take with some music of this era.

Is it any wonder that some musical purists consider these interpretations seminal? These CD's are a worthy addition to any classical library (although I can't help but reminisce about the fact that I paid $27.39 for the 11 record set when I bought it almost 30 years ago).

they sound ok but there are better bands out there that fulfill my requirements for this style of music. for example: detroit cobras, the black keys. they have better vocals and catchier songs that move you more

Shimmy Shake at the Beach Party.......2003-12-16

FINALLY! A new sound that sounds old, but is still refreshingly original! The Come Ons are 4 people ( who don't look like your average band, by the way) who have found the missing link between surf music, soul R&B, and pop rock. The best way I can think of to describe the sound is: music to shake your ass to... in a bikini, on the beach, around a campfire.

Another Detroit band with a White Stripes connection ( one song, "At the Bus Stop-part one," is admittedly "loosely ripped off of Jack White") which may make one think they are riding in on the coat-tails of their hometown heroes, but no. They are way out in left field. They don't sound a thing like the White Stripes, they actually sound more like the Ventures meets Liz Phair meets the Blues Brothers meets Nancy Sinatra. They use organs and harmonicas and good old fashioned backgound "ahhs" and "oohs." They are so, so, so, so good!!!

Songs that stand out are "Ooh," "I get so excited, "Sugar Fortified," "I feel good all over," and "I wanna be Loved." Also mixed in are some great instrumental tracks.

Soul 2000!.......2000-06-28

Somehow these four white people, two guys and two gals, from Detroit ooze more 'soul' than 99% of the current 'r & b' crop. Not only does this record make you wanna swivel your hips inna sexy kinda way, it also sounds great and has the greatest organ sound since Costello's Get Happy! A couple of exciting instros, lotsa mid tempo grinders and one totally killer ballad in "loaded heart"! And really, there's no way around it, it makes you think of sex. As all great rock & roll should off course...A mighty record that grows on ya with every spin and the best of its kind since the Detroit Cobras album!

I love the Turn-Ons..........2006-08-07

Now let me tell you somethin, this band has to be one of my all-time most favorite bands ever AND this album has ranked among Nolan's top albums ever next to "Loveless" MBV, "Nowhere" Ride, and others that i don't have time to mention. Living in a city like chicago and listening to the first track "skyscrapers" while you walk downtown makes you want to fly, AND this album will make you high, so you will FLY, as high as you want, and as far as this album will take you, which would be very, very, far. The whole album's beautifully layered and gorgeous and P.S. I love you, has to be the best song of the best songs on this album coz they all are that good. Brilliant! OK, bye-bye.

This cd contains compositions for the church year (from Advent to Trinity Sunday) by Bram Beekman, organist of the 'Oostkerk' Middelburg (Netherlands) Bram Beekman himself performes the compositions on his organ, a baroque instrument by the builders 'De Rijckere' 1779. The works originated partly as improvisations performed during services and recitals, and notated from memory specially for this disc. Entirely in keeping with the composer's pursuance of absolute perfection, Beekman continued to polish his compositions right up until the recording. The style varies considerably, ranging from romantic to cautiously modern; from sugarly and Reger-like to Messiaen. The pieces were conceived with the sound of the 'Oostkerk' organ in mind.
