The Bed project is driven by one man alone. Composer, singer and multi-instrumentalist Benoît Burello is the driving force and key figure in the group he put together.
Since 1995, under the deceptively cosy Bed moniker, he's been setting lyrics by his favourite authors the likes of Henry David Thoreau, Henry Miller, Walt Whitman and William Carlos Williams to music. His compositions sound at times like intimate precursors to rock, and are clearly marked by his passion for the jazz of Ornette Coleman, the spacey sounds of Cale, the explosive energy of Sonic Youth and the musical freedom and discretion of Mark Hollis.
Despite two well received appearances at the Transmusicales festival in Rennes and a number of exceptionally fine self-produced recordings, Benoît had to wait until his 2000 deal with label Ici d'Ailleurs before he had sufficient means to record his first album proper. He opted to spend a year working on the album at home, endlessly recording, arranging and editing. He invited several musicians whose ideas he felt were in tune with his own to come and add their unique instrumental touches to the project (violin, cello, clarinet, drums, etc.), while reserving the vocal, keyboard and guitar for himself. The end product, entitled THE NEWTON PLUM, was a recording of stunning timelessness, a work of easily worn yet understated erudition that met with unanimous critical acclaim from the likes of Libération, Les Inrocks, Télérama, Magic, and others, providing the label with unaccustomed levels of international attention.
Product Description
After giving a series of concerts that heralded the evolution of the titles on THE NEWTON PLUM towards a jazzier feel, Benoît recorded SPACEBOX. This time around he recorded in a studio Le Chalet in Bordeaux with the musicians who accompanied his stage performances: Jean-Michel Pires (The Married Monk, Bosco) on drums, Olivier Mellano (Miossec, Mobiil) on guitar, Daniel Paboeuf (ex Marquis de Sade) on brass instruments and Vincent Ferrand (I N Fused) on double bass.
This second album is both lighter in tone and more varied than its predecessor. Although the accumulated experience of live performance has created an organic link to its predecessor, SPACEBOX is perhaps an even greater achievement than was THE NEWTON PLUM. The eight tracks on SPACEBOX retain that same knowing yet understated musicality of Benoît's earlier compositions, but also feature a greater sense of freedom as they move closer to pure jazz, at times veering to a 'live' sound. So, having completely assimilated the most obvious influences heard on the first album (Mark Hollis and Robert Wyatt), Bed now give us SPACEBOX, where the music is at once more personal and more alluring than ever.
