This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. I highly recommend this for all who wish to understand the origin of music, as well as the processes that are employed to create music!

This CD is excellent for the beginner or expert! To be able to haear the instrumets separately and then together really provides a good education. and/or refresher. The book thaty comes with the CD is alomost worth the price by itself!

Very Informative and Enjoyable.......2006-11-20

Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!

This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.

Excellent Intro for Those Not Familiar with the Orchestra.......2003-11-08

I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.

The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!

I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.

The one complaint I have is the last CD. This deals with the orchestra. I wanted more of a tour of how the orchestra has been used through history up to the present. Instead, it was a tour of how different groups of instruments sound. I thought it could have been better. The other 6 CDs are excellent.

We were disappointed with this CD, but for the price I guess we can't expect much. I didn't care for the new style presentation of the songs. I like a more traditional rendering.

Not so bad, 100 tunes for 4$.......2005-06-22

I red the comments of two other people who have bought this 4 CD BOX SET and it is not really so bad. I will even add that there are some excellent tunes. However, I must agree with the fact that few tunes seem to have been recorded 40 or 50 years ago, mainly when you hear the scratches of an old turntable but it is just 2 or 3 tunes. Furthermore, if you do not know American music, it is a good BOX SET to buy if you consider that you received 4 CD for 4$ including 100 tunes. On these 4 CD, I have heard some orchestration that I have never heard before and I consider that they are different but interesting. Any way, after hearing these 100 tunes, you will say to yourself that you like this tune, this other tune, this other tune and so on and you will be able to buy a more expensive CD with the tunes that you like. However, I have bought many CDs in the last few weeks and as you know, there are always some tunes that you like and some tunes that you do not like on every CD that you will buy. So, don't buy it at 25$ but at 4 or 5$ dollars, it is a very good choice for 100 tunes.

You get what you pay for. The singers put their own spin on the singing of each song. If you didn't hear the words you would not recognize some of them. Even some of the music sounds like a bad recording of music played on a turntable. Definitely not worth the price.

I wish this review had been here when I was thinking of purchasing it. I guess you get what you pay for. If you are thinking of buying this, you are better off recording your own CDs (or at least buying one that you can listen to a sampling of the songs). This album includes songs that were mere recordings of the songs playing on an old record player. It's almost so unbelievable that it is funny.

'The Awesome Power Of A Fully Operational Mothership' was one of only four George Clinton projects during the 1990's.This was during that period where Clinton was deeply emmersed in the alternative rock set of the day,appearing at places like the Lollapalooza Festival,in articles in MOJO magaize and being sampled (and paid heavy tribute to) by just about every rapper and hip hop artist under the sun.So T.A.P.O.A.F.O.M has a 32 member band of P-Funk all stars along for the ride;Clinton even goes as far as including a numbered list of each band member that has a small water color painting of each of them in the liner notes (the corrosponding name to number appears in the insert).That being said T.A.P.O.A.F.O.M seems like more of a presentation piece then Hey Man, Smell My Finger and in many ways it is.Musically "If Anybody Wants To Get Funked Up" sets the tone;this music is NOT built on samplers and sequencers but George Clinton certainly does his best to get the P-Funk all stars to sound as if it is.Most of the music is set up to make Clinton sound like he's "down" with the G-Funk style of Dr.Dre or what Ice Cube was doing at the time.So T.A.P.O.A.F.O.M is certainly very hip-hop orineted.Still this includes some clever songs such as "Mathematics",which uses clever wordplay to describe a love affair as a financial equasion,full of Clintons singular wit.And Charlie Wilson throws some strong and heavy funk flavors on the lively "New Spaceship".On "Rock The Party"","Get Your Funk On" and the title cut George and his band give it there all on songs that explore a vivic psychedelic landscape with hot horns and guitars before moving onto a reprise of the first song.Nontheless T.A.P.O.A.F.O.M suffers from the same problem Clinton's albums had since 1984-too many of the songs rely on jamming and random singing and chanting,as if that is what funk is in the first place.So much of it just goes on forever and after awhile all starts to sound somewhat alike.T.A.P.O.A.F.O.M is definately the product of the mid 1990's funk revival when the classic albums were being reissued and so many artists like George Clinton felt the need to contribute new material like this to the brew.If you are a P-Funk completist you'll need this;it is by no means terrible.If you are a little more finnicky about your funk and don't like it when it relys too much on the sound of contemporary hip-hop then T.A.P.O.A.F.O.M may not be the best place to go.Depends on which variety of THE BOMB you prefer-it's all up to you.

This is not the typical George Clinton that I'm used to hearing!
The only standout songs are "If Anybody Gets Funked Up" and "Funky Kind". It sounds like George and the band were tired from all that Mothership touring from the 70's.

I'll have to give this a 5 star because it is an overall excellent album and did not get the props it deserves. I recommend it to all P-funk fans. The single "Anybody Get Funked Up" is a good dance number. Hip shaking music to be exact. I love Belita Woods voice. "Summer Swim" should be called "Aqua Boogie" part 2 since they are singing about Booty @ the beach. My favorite is "Underground Angel" it has that "FUNKADELIC" over/undertone. You won't be disappointed.

More than a little Funky.......2005-02-08

If funk were made of strawberries and bananas I'd be drinking a lot of smoothies. This album is simply great. It's everything a 20-something college kid likes about Hip-Hop, Funk, and any kind of good music rolled into one album. It's really smart music too. Hard as Steel is brilliantly funny without being too corny, and Underground Angel is amazing. BUY THIS.

Maybe it says something about rap's limitations that hip-hop's most creative acts move away from the form in order to expand artistically. While the Beastie Boys, head increasingly back toward hard rock, P.M. Dawn continues its course into the outer space of sonic gloss. Perhaps Jesus Wept, the duo's third album, relies on a celestial combination of airy R&B and acoustic hippie pop to float the Cordes brothers (Prince Be and J.C. the Eternal) into a higher level of consciousness than booming beats and rhythmic rhymes could take them. Or more likely, P.M. Dawn's musical evolution simply indicates these Jersey City homeboys are individuals unwilling to be limited or formatted.

Jesus Wept is, in fact, not all that different from the heady potion of English psychedelic synth pop, east coast new jack sway, and new age metaphysics the group brewed on 1993's The Bliss Album...?, only it's much more that way. Prince Be's existential voyage through his religious/spiritual identity crisis is surprisingly endearing, and songs like "The 9:45 Wake-Up Dream" and "Apathy...Superstar!?" are every bit as inventive as their titles suggest. And though the duo's typically heavy-handed production can make the mix sound more like marshmallow at times, the lush string/piano/acoustic guitar orchestrations ("Sonchyenne"), smooth dance beats ("My Own Personal Gravity"), and well-placed samples ("Downtown Venus") make Jesus Wept another exquisite slice of P.M. I'm no R&B fan, but you gotta hear this!!.......2005-08-14

I'm a major Talking Heads fan and some years ago I heard these guys do the final track featuring 'Once in a Lifetime' and had to get it. To my pleasant surprise I really enjoyed most of the CD. The vocals are so smooth you too will take notice! A sample of the intro of tracks won't do the CD justice as many need to build a bit. It also wouldn't hurt to be somewhat spritual as many songs reference the faith, but don't let the 'Christian R&B' thing bug you. This is just good music.

Despite what many other reviews indicate, I don't hear much of PM Dawn's first two albums at all in the music of JESUS WEPT. This is a gorgeous, thoughtful, often sad (no surprise there with PM Dawn), and clever album. For legal reasons, many of the music samples they hoped to use could not be, so this is not really the album PM Dawn wanted to produce. Even so, it easily tops their first two albums. The intro here takes a Charlie Brown Christmas clip and spins it into a very moody, unsettling bit conjuring thoughts of self-worth/life/death. It erupts with a gun-click into the hit "Downtown Venus." This funky romp gives way to four more mellow songs, the best of which is "I'll be Waiting For You." As with many of PM Dawn's "love" songs, Prince Be's lyricism is ultra-poetic, and very touching. This song and "A Lifetime" are two wonderful examples of what seems to be such a strong connection to love that makes life meaningless-and utterly painful- without it. It's a very personal sounding album, and I would imagine it is not entirely fiction. "Why God Loves You," one of most musically and lyrically interesting songs on the disc, seems to praise admiration, profess confusion and apparent existentialism. It rides a groove of guitar and drums. PM Dawn is very spiritual, but not necessarily religious. Other high points of the album include the acoustic (and entirely falsetto) "Soncheynne" and the dreamy "Miles from Anything." As much as I like this album, there are a couple spots that don't match the near-perfection that much of the album hits. Sonically everything fits, but some songs' lyrics are nonsense and don't belong with the deep, spiritual tunes. Since some songs are SO good, it makes the less-than perfect songs seem worse than they actually are. The best parts of this record come when the group does what they do with the title: humanize spirituality. When the lyrics AND music intertwine to form both meaning and feeling, THAT'S magic.

Spiritual Support.......2001-09-25

Whenever one is feeling out of balance or just plain low, this album is the one to listen to. It seems to provide upliftment for every downer known to the human being. The lyrics are otherworldly but understandable with thought and all the music is truly from a sacred place inside the creators' hearts. This music simply touches like none I've ever felt before. There is actually only one rap song here, the rest are beautiful inspiring melodies. I wish P.M Dawn all the happiness they have given to me through this ablum.

Essential album regardless of age, sex or musical preference.......2001-02-11

PM Dawn's 3rd album, 1995's "Jesus Wept", is in my opinion their best. I didn't fall for this album instantly - it took a few listens then the hooks become more prevalent and addictive. I enjoy all types of music but listened to this album daily for over 2 years. Best songs include "The 9:45 Wake-Up Dream"(one of the greatest songs ever, irrespective of music genre - it gives me goosebumps), "Sometimes I Miss You So Much" and "Downtown Venus". I cannot stress strongly enough how good this album is - i'm not someone who automatically gives any album 5 stars - here all plaudits are justified. If the only song you know by this group is "Set Adrift On Memory Bliss" then you really should buy this album. Not a rap group at all, PM Dawn's ability to seamlessly combine original lyrics/arrangements with choice snippets of popular songs is brilliant. The recent "Best Of" (released 2000) is an inadequate 14 track farce, containing only 12 different songs then 2 remixes.

Lucious, Brilliant Aural Masterpiece........2000-07-27

Released near the end of 1995, this album was the masterwork I always knew these two gifted young men had in them. To call this a hip-hop album would be not only limiting, but a downright insult. Filled to overflowing with gorgeous melodies: "I'll Be Waiting For You","My Own Personal Gravity", "Why God Loves You", acoustic balladry: "Sonchynne" "A Lifetime", floating spirituals: "Sometimes I Miss You So Much (Dedicated To The Christ Conciousness)", glorius guitar squalor: "The 9:45 Wakeup Dream", "Superstar:Apathy" and creamy R&B: "Miles From Anything" this album has something for everyone. I purchased this CD right after graduation from Navy boot camp, and soon had my roomate in the barracks begging me to make him a copy of it on tape (I just sprung for another CD), but his addiction clearly indicated the power of great music, and how easily one can fall under the spell of P.M. Dawn. With "Jesus Wept" this brilliant group cast off the shackles and burden of being labled just another 'rap act' and produced what is actually one of the greatest ALBUMS OF ALL TIME, REGARDLESS OF GENRE. Any music lover will appreciate the richness and texture of the music, the earnestness, longing, and spiritual depth of Prince Be's Lyrics (yes, us African American Males are this complex and sensitive, but rarely do we get the chance to show it what with all the ridiculous, worn out thug/gangsta cliches that just won't go away) and marvel at the LP's perfect, pristine production. This release raises the bar for all artists, and further proves that race doesn't matter when it comes to quality and that African American Artists shouldn't be pigeonholed or limited in what they can accomplish. This is simply ingenious. Another Highly Reccomended Masterpiece.

MPG is Marvin's best '60's ablum, TTWLI is good too!.......2004-08-03

These import two-fers' are terrific. They feature terrific sound quality and great packaging. The albums included are:

M.P.G. (1969) **** (4 out of 5) Despite Marvin's long stream of hit singles, this was his first album to actually crack the Top 40 on the Billboard Hot 200 albums chart and is his biggest seller of the sixties. M.P.G. reteams Marvin with "I Heard It Through The Grapevine-producer Norman Whitfield, and the two manage to overcome the typical Motown formula and create a surprisingly focused work.

A sense of consistency (which is what's missing from most sixties Motown efforts) is brought to the set by the blisteringly lean arrangements and some of Marvin's most impassioned vocals ever. The big smash hit is "Too Busy Thinking About My Baby" (#4 Pop, #1 R&B), which is easily one of his best singles. The song's bouncy timbre made it the perfect (and somewhat surprising) follow up to the bone-chilling smash "I Heard It Through The Grapevine."

Some irresistible light blues is brought to the set with the incredible cuts "Seek And You Shall Find," "More Than A Heart Can Stand," and the hit "End Of The Road" (#40 Pop, #7 R&B). The disc plays out in a surprising satisfying manner, with the clever refrain of "Only A Lonely Man Would Know" laying down nicely beside the funky "It's A Bitter Pill To Swallow." The only tracks that miss the boat is the forgettable cover of "This Magic Moment" (which is also placed too early in the album) and the banal "Memories," which has nothing to distinguish it aside from Marvin's powerful performance. Thankfully these two missteps are listenable and M.P.G. emerges as Marvin's best solo album of the sixties.

THAT'S THE WAY LOVE IS (1970) **** (4 out of 5) Produced by Norman Whitfield again, THAT'S THE WAY LOVE IS continues the excellence of M.P.G. and is possibly the most underrated album from the first decade of Marvin's career. The tense and mournful title track (#7 Pop, #2 R&B) was another hit single, cracking the Top Ten on both charts. The formulaic "How Can I Forget" (#41 Pop, #18 R&B) was almost a hit, but it (along "No More Tears") is actually one of the disc's weakest moments. The sweeping "Gonna Give Her All The Love I Got (which received some airplay as the flip side of the "How Can I Forget" single) is really splendid and should have been a A-side release. Four covers appear on this recording, and they may be the most surprising songs here.

Marvin's renditions of "Yesterday" and "Abraham, Martin, and John" are stunning and absolutely heartbreaking. Shockingly enough, both manage to top the original recordings (by The Beatles and Dion, respectively). The remaining two covers ("Groovin'" and "Cloud Nine") are much less effective, but they're perfectly solid. Throw in the vintage Motown sound of "Gonna Keep Tryin' Till I Win You're Love" and a few other catchy numbers and you have another excellent Gaye-Whitfield release. On this record, there are flashes of the brilliance that would come later in Marvin's career; although it's still pretty unbelievable that the peerless masterpiece WHAT'S GOING ON would be released in little less than a year.

Two classic albums from Marvin.......2003-08-09

The first album featured here, MPG, was released in 1969 and the second, That's the way love is, was released in 1970.

The collection opens with Too busy thinking about my baby, a top five hit for Marvin in Britain and America. The follow-up single, That's the way love is, was atop ten American hit but missed the chart completely in Britain. How can I forget you became a minor American hit, but in Britain it was put on the B-side of Abraham Martin and John (my favorite Marvin Gaye song). The tribute to Abraham Lincoln, Martin Luther King and John F Kennedy gave Marvin a top ten UK hit, but it was Smokey Robinson and the Miracles who had the American hit with that song. From these two albums, there was one other minor American hit, The end of our road, which was not released as a single in Britain.

The other tracks making up these albums include covers of This magic moment (Drifters), Yesterday (Beatles) and Grooving (Rascals) as well as songs that had been hits for other Motown artists and some interesting but obscure original songs.

If you already have one of Marvin's hits collections and wish to explore further, you will certainly enjoy the two albums presented here.

2 Great Lost Gems from Motown.......2002-09-14

These 2 albums from Marvin Gaye's late 60's output are great! "That's the Way Love Is" & "Too Busy Thinking..." are the 2 major hits and they are both great, revealing 2 different sides of Mr. Gaye. The former is done in an intense, brooding "Grapevine" style, while the latter is a good time uptemo song which sounds like something Sam Cooke might have done. Many people complain that Motown kept re-doing the same songs with its artists. Personally, I like comparing the different versions. His take on "I Wish It Would Rain" doesn't take anything from the Temptations' original, but is still a very good version with a harder edge. Several other songs "Keep on Tryin" & "Give Her All the Love I've Got" have been done before by the Temptations and other artists, but Mr. Gaye's versions are very enjoyable. He also does "End of Our Road" (Originally done by Gladys Knight & Pips)in a similar style to his version of "Grapevine" and it is a great track. Some of the non-Motown covers are quite good, particularly "Groovin" and "Yesterday". Also, his version of "Abraham, Martin & John" is very moving. His version of "This Magic Moment" is nice, too. Some of the other "filler" ("Bitter Pill" "Only A Lonely Man" "Memories, etc) is all quite good. I also have the "In The Groove" (later "I Heard it Through the Grapevine") CD and taken together these 3 CD's are a great listening experience for any Motown/Soul fan.

Great sound - great packaging.......2001-06-05

These are the last two solo CD's Marvin released before truly breaking out on his own ("What's Going On"). While "MPG" has a a number of gems on it, namely "Too Busy Thinking...", "The End of Our Road", and "I Got To Get To California", the overall production is sometimes shady ("Try My True Love") and it makes the album feel more like the single track sessions that they were, instead of a cohesive suite of songs.

By contrast, "That's The Way Love Is" is pure genius. The entire album is produced and nine of the twelve songs are co-written by Norman Whitfield. I have combed this list of twelve tracks trying to single a few out for merit, but there really is no reason to, it's all top notch. By itself, this CD would rate 4.5 to 5 stars.

As an additional note, for the collector's/audiophiles out there, the entire "That's The Way Love Is" album was previously available in a 1994 remastered version titled "The Norman Whitfield Sessions". The sound on this release is considerably clearer, and makes it well worth the purchase.

There's really only one question left to ask...

Why can't we get these and other Motown out of print releases in the U.S?
