Jesse.......2007-05-13
What can you say about CCR. Absolutly amazing. I own over 40,000 songs and this is one of my top 5 bands being that they are so original and you can tell they love their music. I love punk rock, grunge, and classic rock and these guys really are in their own genre. I love their remake of "Wanna rock'n'roll" This is really the CD you need to check out if you haven't heard these guys before... Its just to bad there is no "Boys from Oklahoma" ...
Great Collection of My Favorites.......2007-02-15
This double disc live CD includes all my favorite CCR songs, and also pulls up some of their friends to sing with them. Unlike most live CD's there is not a lot of talking, just a lot of great music. This live compilation is a vital for all CCR fans.
Cross Canadian Ragweed.......2007-01-10
If you like Cross Canadian Ragweed, buy this cd. It is a two disc set, with mostly previously recorded tracks, but also some new ones. We are really enjoying it!
Simply the Best.......2006-12-10
Finding out where some of the songs came from (inspiration) was great! I hope everyone read the thank yous...that was just as great as the cd itself. These guys and their families are some of the best people.
Rock and Roll is alive and well.......2006-12-06
If you think the days of true rock and roll are dead and gone, check out this CD. As someone who can barely stand to listen to rock radio anymore, Ragweed is a welcome sign that good music is still being made, whether the mainstream wants us to hear it or not. Cody Canada has really turned into a shredder on the electric guitar, and this CD is worth buying just for the sake of listening to his solos. Canada's playing makes Robert Earl Keen's "Lonely Feeling" into one of the most powerful rock ballads I've heard. All of the tracks show off the skills of this band, and it's amazing how far they have come since "Live at the Wormy Dog" (which is another great CD if you want to hear the early days). The last few songs on the first CD are acoustic, which gives you a chance to hear a side of Ragweed that you maybe haven't heard before. Canada's cover of Neil Young's "Needle and the Damage Done" really shows off his voice and acoustic guitar skills.
If I have one complaint about this CD, it might be that the CD is a true live CD (no remixing), and sometimes it's hard to hear the awesome musicianship or Canada's vocals over the noise of the crowd. A lot of people will probably love it for the same reason though. All in all, anyone who loves good old fashioned rock and roll will love this CD.

Good album. Got it for 1 song and liked most of the album.
Cross just being Cross.......2005-04-11
If you like any sort of Texas Country, this is the album/band for you. Cross is one of the best bands to see live and have amazing energy and lyrics you can't help but love! This album captures just how amazing a live show from Cody and the boys truely is. All the other reviews are true with each song, but the one song they all miss is "Crazy Eddie's Last Hurrah". This song is AWESOME! It starts with Cody sayin' ,"this is a song about killin' a woman because she pisses you off!" Its a great song to dedicate to any woman who has done you wrong! Gotta give 'The Boys From Oklahoma' props on more great work!
Cross Canadian Ragweed.......2004-11-09

Customer Reviews:
Great CD.......2006-08-06
This is a wonderful double CD of fabulous musical numbers performed by theatre greats and directed by a legandary musical director.
Simply the Best.......2005-06-29
First, to the person who criticizes the recording b/c of "Broadway Baby." Daisy Egan (who sings in in this recording) sounds like she's 10 becuase she IS young. She had just appeared on Braodway in Secret Garden and won a Tony for it. It's a joke...Broadway BABY...hello, it's a joke.
In a compilation of songs like this you're always going to have tracks that you prefer over others, but the majority of the renditions in this CD are great. This is simply one of the best collections of Sondheim out there. You get interpretations that span from "classical" (Green Finch), to bordering on insane (Anything Twice). This is to demonstrate how versatile this composer really is.
In my opinion, some of the best renditions are "Not a Day Goes By," "Anyone Can Whistle", "Girls Upstairs Medley," "Losing My Mind/Drive a Person Crazy," and "Weekend inthe Country." Makes me wish I had been there to witness it first hand.
If you love Sondheim and enjoy hearing Broadway performers, get this CD. A great recording.
Inconsistent, but mostly excellent.......2004-03-21
I am sure no knowledgeable person would deny how absolutely perfect all these songs are. However, the performances on this album are extremely inconsistent. It will go from an excellent rendition (Waiting for the Girls medley, Sunday, With So Little To Be Sure Of, Sooner or Later, Green Finch, Send in the Clowns, Pretty Lady) to the weird (I never Do Anything Twice), to the bad (Broadway Baby, Our Time). I still have absolutely no idea how they managed to butcher one of the best songs ever written--Good Thing Going--and turn it into smooth jazz elevator music. Why would they give Broadway Baby to someone who sounds like she's 10? That said, Liza Minelli, Glenn Close, Karen Ziemba, Dorothy Laudon and the "Waiting for the Girls" performers are all very good. And ending with Bernadette Peters and "Sunday" ends the set on a absolutley fabulous note.
"Celebration" is not strong enough a word.......2003-04-30
This review is by Crosley.
I have been a major Sondheim fan for quite some time, and I finally obtained a copy of this album. I was blown away by the excellent cast and phenomenal selection of music. It is obvious how much work went into this production, considering that this is the live recording of a one time show, and it's flawless. The songs cover all of his shows with the exception of "Passion," which was released 3 years after this show. Also, the shows for which he wrote only lyrics are ommited, like West Side Story, Gypsy, etc. Thus, you can find material from A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, Anyone can Whistle, Company, Follies, A Little Night Music, Pacific Overtures, Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, Merrily we Roll Along, Sunday in the Park with George, Into the Woods, and Assassins.
There are two striking things about this CD (besides the music and performers themselves). First of all, some of the songs are completely stylistically reworked. The most obvious are "Good Thing Going" and "I Never do Anything Twice." Both are traditionally very ballady with a piano accompaniment, but here they have been redone as jazzy tunes. The result is excellent. Such reworkings demonstrate that Sondheim writes music for virtually any style, and in these cases, across several styles. It's a great example of his variety. The other interesting thing is how many songs have overlapping melodies of songs from different shows. Case in point, "Our Time" and "No one is Alone" are sung seperately by the Harlem Boys Choir and Betty Buckley (the original Grizabella in Webber's atrocious "CATS," although Buckley was excellent) respectively, and then combined. Putting these two songs together offer different meanings to each, and the music is only enhanced. Another example, the trio of "Waiting for the Girls Upstairs," "Love, I Hear," and "Live Alone and Like It" are sung in that order, and then the latter two are combined. Again, the meanings of the songs change, this time in an almost narrative style, and offering different takes on love in the same montage. Lastly (at least for this review, there are more), Dorothy Laudon's (the original Ms. Hannigan in Annie) combination of "Losing my Mind" and "You Could Drive a Person Crazy" is brilliant. Those who are familiar with these songs will wonder how exactly they fit, but trust me, they do. She swtiches back and forth between melodies to create a number that starts poignant and beautiful, and soon moves to become uproariously funny. Both the song reworkings and overlapping melodies of unrelated songs are all for the better.
I recommend this recording to anyone wanting to get better acquainted with some of Sondheim's best work, or those already familiar who want to hear a tour de force of phenomenal music. It has been said that Sondheim is a masterful lyricist (which he is), but lacks real talent for music. This CD is the final proof that such critics are wrong. His music may take a few listenings to get into, contrary to Webber or Wildhorn, but unlike those two, he doesn't cater to the audience. He challenges them to think outside of traditional musical theater in a glorious repertoise of shows that reach for a smarter, more sophisticated form.
A maginificent evening, a magnificent album.......2001-12-16
There's something to be said for the first concert you ever see at Carnegie Hall. I was fortunate enough to have this be my first. This entire evening was devoted to his genius and the performers did not disappoint.
This wonderful double CD shows off the best and brightest of the musical theatre composer and it is, as one person put it, "an embarassment of riches." With songs from his finest works done in amazing arrangements (listen to that harmony in "We Had a Good Thing Going"!) combined with fabulous performers this is a Sondheim lovers delight.
My favorite song is, without a doubt, Dorothy Louden and her wonderful medley of "Losing My Mind" into "You Could Drive a Person Crazy" followed very closely by the recently departed Madeline Kahn singing "Getting Married Today."

Customer Reviews:
One of the great live recordings.......2007-03-30
As mentioned in other reviews, the sound is not the best and they probably had more even performances. But I don't think that's the real point of the recording, or the spirit anyway. I think it's more accurate to say it captures the essence of the band instead of merely a performance.
The haphazard recording and playing just adds to the charm. I don't want polished and seemless from these guys, I want a high octane frat party. And this recording captures that in all its glory.
I never got to see the band live, Country Dick may well have been dead before I even discovered them and I see no indication they ever came this far east. But if you "get it", this is their ultimate recording. It's one of my favorites. When you get tired of polished corporate offerings, give this a try.
It is truly alternative, the way it was meant to be.
One of the best CD's I own.......2007-01-15
All I can really say is buy this CD, you will not be disappointed. The Beat Farmers at their best...LIVE. God bless you Country Dick, I miss you!!
Drink one for Country Dick..........2001-11-16
The Beat Farmers' studio releases never impressed me nearly as much as this raucous '89-'90 New Year's Eve live recording. Like many of the current crop of half-novelty/half-serious cowpunk bar bands (New Duncan Imperials come to mind), the Farmers lure you in with their ha-ha songs and bawdy reworkings of classic tunes. Country Dick's "Lucille" and "Happy Boy" may be the best-known tracks here, but over more listenings it's obvious that there's real substance in their more serious tracks.
"Socialite", "Riverside", and "Hollywood Hills" are as good as the folks whose songs they stomp into the ground (the Kinks, Neil Young). If there ever was a definitive "bar" sound, this would be it. Bad sound, loud guitars, drunken harmonies, and a screaming audience.
With 21 tracks and an appearance by Mojo Nixon ("King Of Sleaze") you just can't go wrong here. This here's a party record of the highest order...and I defy even the most ultra-serious Neil Young fan to hate the Farmers' version of "Roll Another Number" ("...in times like these you gotta know how to talk to the cops," says Dick at one point in his hilarious tirade).
Solid live album from a great band.......2001-09-04
Beat Farmers was a great and unique band. They were best in concert. This live album captures the band on stage in their home town San Diego, and it includes most of their best songs and the crazy performances of their drummer, late Country Dick Montana. Great fun.
if I was a carpenter..........2000-04-14
This here is the ultimate rock'n'roll 4/4 beat live record. Hubba hubba hubba indeed.

Amazon.com's Best of 1998
James Brown had just recorded "Say It Loud--I'm Black and I'm Proud" when he visited Dallas in summer 1968. Mixing Soul Brother Number One's more traditional gospel- and jump-blues-influenced early hits with the funk he was still developing ("Cold Sweat," "Licking Stick--Licking Stick"), Say It Live and Loud captures that show in a time-capsule piece that's hardly just a historical document: it brings the full-force power of Brown, Maceo Parker, and the rest of the "James Brown Orchestra" front and center. --Rickey Wright
Amazon.com
James Brown had just recorded "Say It Loud--I'm Black and I'm Proud," the anthem that would become his last pop-chart top 10 entry for nearly two decades, when he visited Dallas on a summer 1968 leg of his then-ongoing tour. Mixing Soul Brother Number One's more traditional gospel- and jump-blues-influenced early hits with the funk he was still developing ("Cold Sweat," "Licking Stick--Licking Stick"), Say It Loud and Live captures that show in a time-capsule piece that's hardly just a historical document: it brings the full-force power of Brown, Maceo Parker, and the rest of the "James Brown Orchestra" front and center. And the memorabilia-laden CD booklet ("We know the Negro deejay won't play this record ... but every BLACK deejay will play this record!") is as essential as the music. --Rickey Wright
Customer Reviews:
Tighten Up is the Track .......2007-04-18
I won't go into too much detail - overall the band plays tight and the tracks are a mix of hits and lesser knowns. I mostly want to make a plug for "Tighten Up" - that track is an expansive and vibrant piece of music and the trumpet solo is the final touch of sweetness. As has been said about music, "when it hits you feel no pain" - that's for dang sure.
KANSAS CITY?.......2007-01-27
I'm looking for a version of Kansas City when James introduces the band.
It sounds like they hadn't been with him for awhile and he's welcoming them back. Does anyone know about this?
WILD, WILD STUFF!! PLAY IT LIVE AND LOUD!.......2007-01-06
The classic story that most of music enthusiasts should know, was how in 1969, James Brown ditched the enormous band he had, an hour before show time, to hire some 16 year old kids with the name Collins, to replace them. Those two kids would eventually become the backbone of the band that changed the face of funk music forever, and not to mention birth hip hop.
BUT- let us never forget the band that James Brown fired (minutes before they could quit) that night, with their lead, by the name of Maceo. They appear here, and show us, quite loud and powerfully- that James Brown had already established what was the face of Funk music. And while that band that James Brown replaced them with has gone down as legends in their own right- they had nothing on this beast.
This era of the Godfather, is without a doubt his wildest and craziest era overall. Ooozing with raw energy- this live performance showcases it nice and tight in one very solid package.
James Brown wrote the tunes, orchestrated the band, and shows he's got the moves and the pipes like nobody else.. but the band itself is capable of anything, it seems. Listen to the change-ups from one song to the next. Theres no breaks anywhere. Proffesional Jazz Musicians practice this type of stuff for over thirty years- these guys were in their twenties- hitting every nail on the head. They are trained and true, and no one falls out of step, yet they suprise you at every turn. Three numbers in the middle without James Brown... still smokin'. Maceo shows us all a little thing called The Tighten Up...
One action packed scorcher of a show, fans of any type of music will likely be blown away by this disc.
God Bless The Godfather of Soul.
Ladies and Gentlemen James Brown, JAMES BROWN!.......2006-12-08
This thing just stayed lodged in the car CD player for weeks and weeks. No reason to listen to anything else!
Powerful, funky, historic, a bundle of frenetic energy~ The thing that knocks me out about this recording besides some of the best cuts of the band of that period live is the SHOW. You get to hear the roles of the band members in the presentation that was "The James Brown Show". This was not just a singer and a band that got up there and played and entertained for a couple of hours or so. This was a multifaceted entertainment machine! Tight, slick and having a great time being the best! Do not miss an instant of this recording, even the introductions and goodbyes.
Maceo is a revelation on this recording. If you think of him as a rhythmic alto player, wait till you hear the burning tenor solo on Suds. I mean, James Brown has left the stage and the energy level gets higher!!! How can that be? Not to mention a developing front man in his own right. He is not alone, the band is great, the names that you know inventing this music right there on stage. Peewee Ellis wrote great, flexible arrangements and band turns on a dime!! James cues, the band jumps!
By the end of the CD, tempos are flyin'!! Cold sweat is waaaay fast. Not the kind of thing you record for a 45 but exactly what is needed this particular evening with this crowd. The Soulbrother #1 reads the crowd perfectly and takes them further than they expected they could go. Ya just gotta keep it goin'. Keep winding em', keep em' dancin' up and send them higher, higher higher!!!! James dancing, women screaming, Excuse me, excuse me, excuse me while I boogaloo."
This is a show!!!
Cold Sweat.......2006-04-28
At a little under $1/minute, the Cold Sweat alone makes the 12 bucks you'll shell out for this one worth it. This might be the most insane version of this tune ever, more so than Live at the Apollo. The rhythm section is so rock-solid and funky, and you can practically visualise JB going through his dancing paces in front of a hysterical Dallas crowd. Add in all the other tunes, and its a serious bargain.

Customer Reviews:
Live and Loud (as Little Texas should be).......2007-07-01
Little Texas is a GREAT live band, and this is the only live album that I know about. This is the original line-up of LT, only fewer. Porter Howell comes up from the back and does a great job on lead vocals. Since this is also billed as a 'greatest hits' album, you get the basics (with the exception of any of the good stuff from their new 'Missing Years' album - too bad). Favorites are 'God Blessed Texas' (best heard live, and Porter Howell is a good match for this song) and the catchy "Amy's Back in Austin.' Using [...] I bought this along with their recent studio album (Missing Years). Good deal.
AWESOME!!!!.......2007-05-16
This CD is so good there isn't enough words to describe it!! The way the disc is mixed you can't tell when it's changing to the next track. It's like you're "live" at the show. I love it!!!
A stunning return.........2007-05-16
Little Texas has returned with a superb live album. I received it yesterday, and I have played it front to back several times. The album is A++ in its quality. One cannot help but conclude that this "pared-down" version of the original Little Texas to a pure guitar band is not only the essential of its original line-up, but that this is the way Little Texas should have been from the outset. The difference - Porter Howell. His superb guitar playing and songwriting have always been a defining feature of Little Texas, but now he is front and center on vocals. The result is a believable and appealing delivery by someone who obviously LOVES the music. The other original members, Del Gray, Dwayne O'Brien, and Duane Propes provide songwriting and harmony vocals that distinguish Little Texas from other country bands. The rhythm section of Propes and Gray is the best in the field to my ear. I won't comment on all the songs, but the live "First Time For Everything" is a special treat. The inclusion of "Get Back" shows that Little Texas can rock and that they, like the Beatles, have a sound that surpasses their numbers. "Hello Again" Little Texas. You are indeed back again...and better than ever.

Great Live Album.......2006-10-10
Only thing I would say is replace 'Dangerous' with 'It's Your life' and 'Gangs in the Street'. It is great that some lesser popular songs like Lady of the 80s and Lead a Double Life are included. I've seen Loverboy in concert many times over the years. For some reason I haven't seen them perform Queen Of The Broken Heats, This Could Be the Night or Gangs In The Street. if you think about it Gangs in the Street is the perfect live song......'Put Your Hands in the Air.....'......Great Song. But I can not complain. Loverboy is trying to shake the ballads syndrom a lot of the bands of the eighties have tried to shed....So it you want to hear This Could Be The Night live....here is your chance. Heaven In Your Eyes is another killer ballad. I bought this a did not regret it for a second. You will enjoy it too. One thing should be noted this cd is a collection of songs from various Loverboy shows throughout the years, but they are blended together perfectly so that you can not even tell.
Incredibly Underrated Group.......2005-09-02
One of the best rock acts of the 80's - bar none. Lead vocalist has a SUPERB voice, guitars, bass, synth and drums just R O C K. This live performance is totally off the HOOK. The recording is of superb quality and these guys just sound WONDERFUL. I highly recommend this CD for any and all Loverboy lovers as well as those who are just discovering them. They're as good as ANY act in pop music in the pop rock genre.
Excellent Live CD .......2005-02-24
I was around during the 1980's. And I'm still a big fan of 80's rock & roll. Loverboy was rockin'with the best of them, let me tell you. This live CD proves it.
One thing that I enjoy about live CD's versus the studio stuff is that with many of them, you catch the energy of a live show. This one is no different. It was recorded at different shows & different places. But the songs & the crowd sound flows evenly between the songs. Most of the hits are here. But, like some other Loverboy fans, there's a few songs I wish they would have included, most noteworthy "Gangs In the Street" & "Notorious." Perhaps we'll see them on a future live CD. Who knows? But overall, this CD still rocks big time!!!
I'm glad Loverboy is still around. I view their webstite from time to time. If you can't catch a Loverboy concert near you, this is the next best thing. Rock on, Loverboy!
A great concert CD from the best band ever.......2005-01-23
I highly recommend that you get this recording no matter what your musical tastes are. Loverboy is the Beethoven of rock music. The quality of their sound is top-notch, and the beauty, energy, and passion of their music is unequaled, in my opinion. They really rock the house down, and you can actually hear the words, unlike some concert CDs.
Good songs and good times.......2004-11-19
I remember seeing these guys open for Journey in 82 at The Omni(Atlanta) and being surprised at how hard they rocked. They were overtly corporate and seemed to have every cliche in the book. But, they also had something that other great rock bands like Kiss(70's version), Journey, AC/DC, etc had- they had great hooks. From the opening cow bell of Working For The Weekend, to Take Me To The Top, Queen of the Broken Hearts, Turn Me Loose, Hot Girls In Love, Lucky Ones, etc.... these guys delivered the goods. They were also a very tight band. They never pretended to be master musicians like Zeppelin or The Who, but they knew how to play in the pocket, especially Paul Dean. His kinetic guitar playing and great sense of rhythm really propelled these songs. Maybe I'm getting old, but it seems like music was just more fun back in the early 80's and this band kicked ass.
