Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Awesome!.......2005-06-23

And I mean awesome in the truest sense of the word! I am somewhat new to SCI and wanted to get some of the live series since some of the live cuts on XM sound great. I bought this particular CD because of some of the previous comments on it, and I was not disappointed. In my still-limited library of SCI, this is the best yet. It is rockin' rollin' fun at it's best. The recording quality is superb, in my opinion, for a live event. There are some teeny slips as would be expected for live jammin', but nothing big enough to be frustrating. It's got really great energy and I just could not stop playing it when I received it! I sense another expensive hobby here - collecting SCI CDs. Anyway, for SCI newbies - get this one, it's great!

5 out of 5 stars balls to the wall jamming.......2004-07-14

Without question the most underrated show in my cheese collection. The band doesn't seem to hold back at all, which makes for a much harder, more intense sound (read: no bubble gum jams). First set highlights would have to be the orange blossom special and hendrix cover. Set 2 alone, however, is one of the best sets of live music Ive ever heard. Its basically one long, fast paced rollercoaster jam weaves in and out of songs while kicking tail the whole way through. Kind of just leaves you shaking your head and smiling. Solid, solid stuff. The Roundabout is nearly flawless. I highly recommend this show to anyone in search of something different or otherwise just plain awe inspiring improvisational music.

5 out of 5 stars June 27, 2002 - Little Rock, AR.......2003-07-05

Don't be fooled by the two discs this OTR set provides (as opposed to the usual three) - it's stronger and has more energy in its pinky finger than some of its three-disc cousins have in their whole bodies. Disc 1 opens with an extremely strong and confident "Cedar Laurels" which never lets up on the hardcore jammin' and paves the way for a truly joyful "Joyful Sound" and a raucous "Orange Blossom Special." "Ten Miles to Tulsa" can throw you off with its steel drum solo in the middle of all the guitars and accordions, but it has a startling amount of energy in its short five-and-a-half minutes. After "This Must Be the Place," the first disc sort of winds down into something more docile and not so interesting, and by the time "Shine" rolls around you're ready for what the second disc has in store.

And boy, does it have something! The infamous "Johnny Cash" kicks off a string of songs, including "Sand Dollar," "Texas," and the Yes cover "Roundabout," and transitions that add up to a full 50 minutes of non-stop jammage. Johnny Cash's insane weirdness seems to rub off on the other songs, especially in the trombone-ish solo in Texas (whether it was done on keyboard or not, I still haven't decided) and the infectious Sand Dollar reprise, and gives all the performances an energy that makes this my favorite of the currently six OTR sets I own.

But just imagine how this set would have been different if they had remembered how to play "Pirates" as per the Japanese gentleman's request (Chatter - track 9 of disc 2)....? You never know! Nonetheless, "Howard" is a great way to end the evening, and on top of the two awesome discs, you'll find a SCI OTR sticker in the spot where the third disc normally goes! Sweet! (I put mine on my truck opposite my Outside Inside hula-hoop crossing sticker.) If you don't have this collection, it should be without a doubt the next one you intend to purchase.

5 out of 5 stars Nice Incident.......2002-11-01

Disk 1: Cedar Laurels, Joyful Sound > Jam > Orange Blossom Special, Ten Miles to Tulsa, This Must Be The Place (Naive Melody) > Big Rock Jam > Voodoo Chile > Shine

Disk 2: Johnny Cash > Roundabout > Sand Dollar > Texas > Sand Dollar > Texas > Johnny Cash, E: Howard

The On The Road (OTR) series is an amazingly ambitious and successful project. I am thrilled with all four of the ones I purchased (4/17/02, 4/19/02, 6/19/02, and 6/27/20). I may have hometown bias, but I liked the Little Rock show better than the other four, although parts of the Birmingham incident were inspired. The sound quality on all of the CDs is superb. The band has really evolved (compared to their earlier live albums "Carnival 99 and "String Cheese Incident Live" and some older bootlegs I have). IMHO, they are the best band touring today. With 78 shows in 2002, the band is real tight and the range and intensity of the jamming keeps you coming back for more. The covers were great: a classic Orange Blossom Special, some very nice Talking Heads (This Must Be The Place), an impeccable version of Yes' Roundabout (played for first time in two years) and Jim Hendrix's Voodoo Chile. A huge Howard closed out the incident. I highly recommend it. Note: set lists and reviews of all String Cheese Incidents are available at the FriendsOfCheese website.
