A two-for-one combo of the first two Big Star albums (they only recorded three). Heard side by side, #1 Record and Radio City only add further testament to Big Star's seminal greatness. On the first album, Chris Bell and Alex Chilton share songwriting credit, though each brings a remarkably different sensibility to the band: Bell creates pure pop nuggets ("Feel") while Chilton swaggers with reckless melancholy ("Ballad of El Goodo," "Thirteen."). After Bell's departure, Chilton took control of the helm for Radio City, and what a ride it is. While not abandoning Bell's penchant for pop, Radio City careens wildly through some of the most exhilarating music ever created, from the rave-up opener, "O My Soul," to the pure pop masterpiece "September Girls" to the whimsical ditty "I'm in Love with a Girl." It's too bad that Big Star didn't create more albums, but thank God they made the ones they did. --Tod NelsonCustomer Reviews:
Big Star is a big influence.......2007-07-09
Behind the Myth and the Legend, Two Fine Rock Albums.......2007-06-01
Bell had left Big Star after #1 Record, but did put in a few appearances on the follow-up, Radio City. (Once again, that title conjures up images of stardom that was not to be.) Chilton did most of the writing himself, with Hummell co-writing several songs and contributing another of his own compositions, the excellent "Way Out West". This album contains Big Star's best-known song, "September Gurls". I will admit that I find Radio City to be less that totally brilliant, but surely I will concede that this is the greatest power pop song ever, right?. Well, no, actually. Yes, it features all of the essential elements of a great pop song: tender but rocking guitar, a strong bass line, nonsense lyrics, and cherub-like vocals. However, there is another song by a different band that mix these element in an even more perfect blend. I have said it before, I say it now, and I will say it again in the future: the greatest power pop song ever is "Shake Some Action" by The Flamin' Groovies. But of course, this doesn't make "September Gurls" any less of a song. It is the best song on the album and the reason why Big Star has the reputation as a pop band that it does. "You Get What You Deserve" and "Back of a Car" certainly don't hurt, and "What's Going Ahn" and "I'm In Love With a Girl" recall the pensive moments from #1 Record.
Big Star has been described as the quintessential American power pop group and the quintessential cult band. I am not sure that any artist can be considered quintessential in either of these categories, particularly power pop, whose quintessence is better defined by songs than by bands. Granted, Big Star's potency in this genre is obvious on these albums. However, that they were more than just a power pop band is evidenced by the fact that their influence was equally strong on both brooding alternative rock and radio-friendly indie pop. For this reason, I believe that it is Third/Sister Lovers that makes the single best case for Big Star as a great and influential band. Alas, Chris Bell can't get any credit for that. But I do consider #1 Record to be the better of their first two albums, and for that he deserves a lot of credit. Having #1 Record and Radio City on a single disc makes having both of them more worthwhile, and avoiding getting bogged down in the legend of these recordings allows two very fine individual albums to rise to the surface.
a word about hype..........2007-05-11
yes, i think there are a few songs on these albums that are pretty mediocre...standard classic rock music from the early 70s... plenty of it on the second half of "#1 record", actually... not bad stuff by any means, but certainly not justifying any kind of hype in my book. BUT, any songs as beautiful, amazing, passionate, melodic, as "ballad of el goodo","thirteen","back of a car", "september girls", etc.etc.etc... deserves to be heard by everyone... so there you go. good music is good music no matter what, and im thankful that the hype was there so i could find my way to these two amazing albums.
Important and overlooked classic rock release more enticing as a twofer. .......2007-04-20
As satisfying as # 1 may be, Radio City takes the cake for me, only cementing Alex Chilton's status as a one man riff machine of brilliance. His leads are more focused here, and some of his power-pop musings are amongst histories shining examples. A worthy purchase for anyone wanting a fun, at times inspired musical history of electric guitar from an underrated mainstay.
Pleasing Power Pop.......2007-03-31
This is a wonderful pristine power pop punch of an album! Filled with happy sunny bliss harmonies. Radio City is a bit slowed down and quieter, but both together go really well. Although these albums didn't sell well and the band fell into obscurity.
If there are any fans of Teenage Fan Club, Velvet Crush or even R.E.M.- (just about any band who sings sweet sad songs, may have been inspired)You may LOVE Big Star - This is one of the first who entered into the power-pop genre. Although Chris Bell and Alex Chilton did model themselves after John Lennon & Paul McCartney.
Such a fun two-fer to listen to, and a total of 24 songs at 73 minutes- I just love it! - 5 stars

By the mid-'70s, Alex Chilton's glistening pure-pop group Big Star had hit the rocks, ignored by the public and beset by internal problems. Chilton, backed mostly by session musicians playing both rock and chamber-music instruments, responded with this wracked, bizarre collection of deeply personal songs, venting oblique visions of terror (the much-covered "Kanga Roo" and "Holocaust"), sarcastically envisioning an imaginary circle of supporters ("Thank You Friends"), and covering the odd rock & roll classic in his messed-up teen-idol voice. The album was eventually abandoned and released in unfinished form years later, but the weird gaps in its arrangements make it even stranger and more powerful. --Douglas WolkCustomer Reviews:

Depressing .......2007-02-15
Best Big Star - start here.......2006-10-01
Then I heard songs like "Big Black Car," "Kangaroo," "Take Care" and "Holocaust" and could barely believe my ears at the gorgeous, tired melancholy. If you want slick production or want more of the old Big Star, this is not your thing, but I prefer my productions a bit ragged at times because it ups the emotional factor. There are only a couple of songs here that don't strike me as perfect, most notably the POINTLESS inclusion of "Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin' On." But ignoring that, I think that it may be one of the best albums ever. The amount of influence this has had on modern music can not be underrated. If the early Big Star did not impress you (or even if it did), please give this one a try.
Yes, Big Star is brilliant but..........2006-08-20
"Take Care Not To Hurt Yourself".......2006-06-13
Although Big Star is thought of as the quintessential American power pop band, you would never know it from their third CD, which I will hereafter refer to as Sister Lovers, because I like that title better. Granted, the disc contains "Thank You Friends", which is in the tradition of their classic "September Gurls". (Neither of which are, in my opinion, as perfect as the greatest power pop song ever, "Shake Some Action" by The Flamin' Groovies, who are also a strong candidate for the quintessential American power pop band.) Apart from that, almost all of the songs on Sister Lovers are stark affairs, ones which stick in your head not because they are catchy but because they're haunting. The range of the band's - or just Chilton's, as the case may be - are indicated nicely by the covers on the record, which include the sparse "Nature Boy" (made famous by Nat "King" Cole), an even slower (and French-flavored) version of The Velvet Underground's "Femme Fatale", and a spirited take on "Till the End of the Day" by The Kinks (which they start off with the opening riffs to The Who's "Anyway, Anyhow, Anywhere"). Chilton is clearly the star of this CD, as he wrote all but one of the original songs. But drummer Jody Stephens gives him a run for his money with his single contribution, "For You". This track speaks as much for the tone and brilliance of Sister Lovers as any of Chilton's songs do.
There are a few weaker tracks, like "Kizza Me", "You Can't Have Me", and the cover of "Whole Lotta Shakin' Going On". If nothing else, at least they lighten the mood of the record a bit. The absence of Chris Bell, whose presence was so strongly felt on their debut #1 Record, may explain the lack of higher quality soul and power pop. (Bell had left the group in 1972, and was killed in a car crash in 1978.) However, this same absence allowed Chilton to make Sister Lovers the tormenting masterpiece that it is. This may have disappointed many Big Star fans, but the band was never obligated to be a pop group, and they had very little chance of coming out of this record intact anyway. Hence, the result is a record full of frightening tales of despondency, like the horrifically unsubtle "Holocaust" - "you're a wasted face/you're a sad-eyed lie/you're a holocaust" - and loneliness, like "Nighttime" - "I hate it here, get me out of here". Other songs seek comfort and salvation in whatever may offer it, be it driving ("Big Black Car"), religion ("Jesus Christ"), or love ("Blue Moon"). And that is hardly where the great songs end. The string-laden "Kangaroo", "Strike It Noel", and "Take Care" are all amazing and probably unlike anything you'll ever hear in popular music.
Given the anguished tone of the record, one does have to wonder - as many already have - if the triumphal sounding "Thank You Friends" is sincere or bitterly ironic. In this sense, it reminds me of The Kinks' song "All of My Friends Were There". While this also sounds celebratory, the lyrics indicate otherwise: "And just when I wanted no one to be there/All of my friends were there/Not just my friends, but there best friends too/All of my friends were there/To stand and stare". Alex, meanwhile, says "without my friends I got chaos". Well, if the remainder of the record is any indication, chaos is what he's got a lot of! Is Alex in fact friendless, or were the friends he had simply not there when he needed them to be?
Whatever the case, lonely is something that Alex Chilton will never be in the world of popular music, as evinced by a couple of tribute albums and dozens of artists who admire Big Star. Sister Lovers was a departure from the snap crackle pop of their first two records, but arguably even more ambitious and fully realized than either of them. But while it may be the masterpiece of the band called Big Star, it can't really stand as their most representative opus, as #1 Record and Radio City are just as essential. Alex Chilton once said that he felt that he was joining Chris Bell's band when he became a member of Big Star, and that Bell was the biggest Anglophile in Memphis. With Bell's departure, Big Star clearly became Chilton's band. Thus, Sister Lovers might more accurately be his personal masterwork, while remaining a fascinating piece of the Big Star puzzle.

Released during the era of leisure suits and pet rocks, the film Superman: The Movie has aged about as well. But the often-clumsy charms of Richard Donner's cartoonish, hit-and-miss take on the Man of Steel was blessed with at least one superlative artistic effort: John Williams's epic score. The composer's Oscar-nominated music (coming on the heels of Star Wars and Close Encounters) was a wall-to-wall heroic symphony, rife with memorable melodies and ominous arrangements. Almost every original cut on this soundtrack appears in an expanded version, supplemented by nearly a dozen previously unreleased cues and alternate takes. Featuring a deluxe slipcase and extensive, new liner notes, this is the definitive release of one of Maestro Williams's greatest scores. --Jerry McCulleyCustomer Reviews:
Original 1978 Recording?.......2007-04-04
AWESOME! John Williams shows again why he's the master of movie scores.......2006-08-31
The original soundtrack release from 1978, while still an excellent collection, was sadly lacking in several of the best cues from the film. Most important of these was Track 12 (Disc 1) in which the helicopter crashes on the Daily Planet's roof and dangles precariously above the street. Williams builds on it, introducing Superman's theme into it as Clark Kent runs across the street, then rips open his shirt to reveal the 'S' - the symbol of the House of El - then enters the revolving door & exits as Superman. At the end of this is one of my favorite cues; the Superman theme is played as the Man of Steel appears above Metropolis, flying over the city on the hunt for criminals. 'Crime of the Century' (Track 6, Disc 2) was one of my favorite cues; this one portrayed the missile convoy as it made its way along the freeway, where Luthor staged the accident to get his cronies close enough to sabotage the missiles. There are too many new tracks to list here that should have been included the first time around, just a lack of space precluded this from happening.

The programming includes a mix of both traditional and brand new songs, a couple of which (Stephen Paulus's "Hymn For America," and Charles Osgood's "The Pledge of Allegiance") were commissioned especially for this recording. Additional note: several of these songs were included on the Choir's 2003 Northeastern States tour, which was a huge success. I highly recommend this recording!

Album Description
DizzyÂ's Business is a passionate, high-energy experience. The 13 tracks on The Dizzy Gillespie All-Star Big BandÂ's sophomore CD Â- built on Dizzy GillespieÂ's original big band charts with new arrangements by musical director and Grammy Award winning arranger Slide Hampton, master saxophonist Jimmy Heath and drummer extraordinare Dennis Mackrel Â- come to life through the collective talents of what can only be categorized as GillespieÂ's Â"dream band.Â"Recorded live at Manchester CraftsmenÂ's Guild in Pittsburgh, PA, during a four-night stand in September-October 2005, DizzyÂ's Business showcases the talents of 18 disciples from the Gillespie school Â- many of them musical luminaries in their own right Â- under the leadership of the great trombonist Slide Hampton. Included in the star-studded lineup are Jimmy Heath, James Moody, Frank Wess, Claudio Roditi, Randy Brecker, Antonio Hart, and Executive Director John Lee Â- all veterans who played with Dizzy at various times throughout the past five decades. Special guest trumpeter Roy Hargrove and the Italian-born vocal sensation Roberta Gambarini round out the ensemble. Hargrove lends his expert sound and riveting solos while Gambarini brings a remarkable range and gift for improvisation.
