2 out of 5 stars Disappointed.......2007-03-24

I don't understand where they went a rye but somehow todd did. I am a die-hard Toadies fan I mean I love that band so I assumed I would love his new band Burden Brothers. But to my amazement I hated most of this album it is too soft for me and sounds way too pop rock radio compliant. Bring back your Toadies rawness and this band will be alright.

5 out of 5 stars This is "Real Rock Music".......2006-12-18

Finally we have some "Real Rock Music" to listen to besides all this fake stuff that's out there. I've even converted my teenage kids over to the Burden Brothers. Vaden Lewis has amazing vocal command on this CD, and all the songs are awesome. This CD is definately going to be in my top 10 of all time. If you like to crank up your rock music and listen to some awesome riffage and great lyrics......this CD is for you. You won't be disappointed!

4 out of 5 stars Great Dallas band.......2005-09-16

This is a quick review.....If you like the Toadies, then you'll love this band. They have an "in your face" edge to them but still show a softer side as well. They show that they have a great style of music and a depth in their lyrics. Very nice band to become acquainted with on a regular basis.

4 out of 5 stars Exactly Like a Toadies Album.......2005-04-23

If you are a fan of any of the 2 Toadies albums, you will be a fan of this one. There is a healthy mix of outstanding, midline, and yucky songs on this album as there have been in Todd's last two. Buy it, but for heaven's sake you cannot ever judge an album after just a few listens unless you are basing things on something like foul language (which Burden Bros have certainly maintained here). Songs to preview are If You're Going to Heaven, Your Fault, Beautiful Night and Shadow.

1 out of 5 stars Just horrible.......2005-04-05

First off, let me explain my own musical preferences. I enjoy Led Zeppelin, Soundgarden, QOTSA, Dandy Warhols, Kyuss, Toadies. I could go on, I just wanna give you an idea of what I like, so you can gauge my reaction to this album accordingly.

This is one of the worst albums I've ever heard. I was so incredibly dissapointed when I listened to it. I'm a pretty big fan of Toadies; this is nothing like Toadies. Every song sounds the same, Lewis doesn't change his vocals throughout the entire CD. I was expecting so much from this group considering their past endeavors, but even the instrumental part of the album is ridiculously lacking. I just don't know what happened. I bought this CD off of Amazon, when I received it I immediately put it in my CD payer and I disliked it so much I put it up for sale on Amazon the next day. I haven't been to any of their live shows, so those may rock, but this CD sucks. I'm not sure what the other reviewers are thinkin. If you can, I recommend going to your local used cd store and if they have a listening station, listen to this cd before you buy it. Do not waste even five bucks on this cd unless you listen to it first and like it. If you want a cd that rocks, buy the first Queens of the Stone Age cd or maybe the Kyuss cd Blues for the Red Sun. Or really, just buy anything BUT this Burden Brothers cd.

5 out of 5 stars The Desert Song/The New Moon.......2005-10-06

I have loved the music of The Desert Song since I first saw it, starring Dennis Morgan, in the cinema many, many years ago, and then the Gordeon McCrae version on TV. I think the Dennis Morgan one was better, or perhaps I may be prejudiced as I have an unfortunate tendency to prefer original versions (how many subsequent productions have proved superior? Not too many).
However, back to the CD. To listen to this super CD is pure pleasure, a real nostalgia trip. Although I had never heard of the musical The New Moon, I was very surprised to realise that the music was almost a familiar to me as from The Desert Song. Aha, the joys of listening to the old fashioned wireless when I was a little girl!

4 out of 5 stars Two classic operettas on one CD.......2004-02-03

Decca Broadway's operetta series providing remastered reissues of eight classic recordings from the 1940s/50s is most welcome. Many of these operettas have no other available recordings on Cd, and these Decca albums have been out-of-print since the late 1960s.

This set offers a classic DESERT SONG recording with Felix Knight, Wilbur Evans and Kitty Carlisle. Some of the dialogue is hysterical: "I Can't kill you" says Kitty before she sails into "I Love You" in the first act finale. It's silly but it's fun.

THE NEW MOON is a more or less straight reading of seven numbers from the score (plus a nicely arranged Overture conducted by Victor Young) performed by a solid cast.

Sound quality on both operettas is quite good considering the age of the original masters: DESERT SONG is 60 years old now.

4 out of 5 stars Stupendous Operettas Finally Available.......2002-10-18

THE DESERT SONG/THE NEW MOON reissue on Decca Broadway Operettas series is as welcome as a spring day. Despite the limited range of the mono sound of both releases, the CD double play should make a welcome addition to any theater lover's music library.

Of the two, THE NEW MOON comes off best with absolutely stunning baritone singing by Lee Sweetland on "Marianne" and "Stouthearted Men" and finer but less impressive work by Jane Wilson and Thomas Hayward on the other familiar numbers. And they are very familiar. Even if you've never seen this show (or the altered film version with Jeannette MacDonald and Nelson Eddy), you'll have heard many of these songs as background music or featured in the film DEEP IN MY HEART, the story of composer Sigmund Romberg.

THE DESERT SONG gives a nice representation of its score hampered only by Kitty Carlisle's tremulous soprano waverings. Wilbur Evans and Felix Knight carry off the male roles with great artistry.

With these shows almost never being revived (except for their film versions, the latter made in 1953 with Gordon MacRae and Kathryn Grayson), this CD is a most welcome treat.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome Set!.......2007-07-01

I am a huge fan of Jerry Goldsmith. They did a great job preserving his vision. I can listen to this collection for hours. Great music!

5 out of 5 stars Elmer Bernstein Film Music Collection.......2006-11-03

This is compilation of hit film music from one of the greatest composers in motion pictures. What is surprising though is the music not included like the Ghost And The Darkness, the 13th Warrior, Rudy and others. To be sure, 4 discs are not enough for a composure of this stature. THe recording, however, is an "engineering masterpiece" which makes the music even more enjoyable than when you first heard it at the movies. When are we ging to get the music that was omittd from this compilaton?

4 out of 5 stars Overall a strong Goldsmith sampler.......2006-04-11

Okay, this is a CD review, so the focus is on music, but I've got to say this first: this has got to be a contender for the ugliest cover art ever. I mean, come on...instead of a tribute to the composer, the cover looks like someone spilled a glass of merlot over a NASA photo.

Fortunately, even an ugly cover will not ruin good music. And the good news is that I'd say about 75 percent of the music is good....and on a 4 cd set, that's a lot. Like other Silva compilations, the strength of this compilation is the variety. There are selections from the big releases (Star Trek, Omen, Rambo), but there is also a healthy dose of tracks from the smaller releases(Under Fire, Lionheart, The Swarm).

Two examples come to mind. Capricorn One and The Great Train Robbery are two movies that are not exactly household names today, but are dominated by two of Goldmith's finest main themes. The City of Prague Philharmonic come through with terrific renditions. And there are plenty of other strong performances...a few being concert versions conducted by Goldsmith himself. Suprisingly, "The Wind and the Lion" works, which is no small accomplishment given the ferentic original performance of "Raisuli Attacks".

It's not a complete success. A few of the performances fall flat, particularly some of the more inventive scores. Total Recall is just bad, mangling the performance with poor percussion and synthesizer choices to boot. Also a letdown is the Klingon Attack from the first Star Trek movie. The Prague Philhamonic attempt doesn't sound bad--it's just that once you've heard the original soundtrack's "blaster beam" with enough bass to rattle your teeth...well let's just say Silva's version is a little tinny in comparison.

But I shouldn't dwell on the negative. Overall, this is a strong sampler of Goldsmith's variety. There are plenty of quality performances here, and despite a few omissions (noticeably Planet of the Apes)this is a very good release from Silva.

4 out of 5 stars Jerry Goldsmith - 40 years of pleasure.......2006-02-22

It was wonderful to hear Mr. Goldsmith's music that went all the way back to The Man from UNCLE, The Waltons, Dr Kildare, etc. And then to hear his music up to the present. The man was a genius!

4 out of 5 stars Almost the perfect compilation.......2005-12-31

Age has its value.... This sweeping collection of compositions brings back so many great memories. This collection shows how significant Goldsmith was for both the movie screen and the small screen. With such a grand collection, every reader can be assured that at least one movie or TV program they like or remember had Goldsmith's contribution. It was an amazing life and the collection well worth having.

However, as sweepig as it is, there are a few holes in the selection. "First Contact", one of the sweetest and richest compositions from the Star Trek is absent. "The Ghost and the Darkness" is missing and the "Medicine Man" music should include the theme song. By dwelling on several selections from the Blue Max, these were squeezed out. Three full and important movie themes got the axe.

However, all but "The Ghost and the Darkness" are readily available and not overly expensive as is the "Ghost" CD. This is a must have for the TV and movie music fan.

Before there was Hans Solo there was Napolean Solo, before ER there was Dr. Kildare. Jerry Goldsmith IS Sci-Fi. "Resistance is futile.. you MUST assimilate this CD collection."

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful voices, beautiful songs.......2006-10-06

Sigmund Romberg isn't in fashion today, but he was one of the founders of what became modern musical comedy, and in listening to this compilation of songs from three of his best-known operettas, you can understand why. Kirsten's soaring soprano and MacRae's rich baritone combine flawlessly to give the very feel that contemporary audiences must have gotten when they attended a performance of a Romberg work (MacRae also starred in the film version of "Desert Song"). The best pieces on the disc are the duets, some of which can give you authentic chills ("Deep in My Heart, Dear," "Wanting You"), and MacRae's thrilling solos ("Serenade," "The Riff Song," "Marianne," "Stouthearted Men," and the tango-esque "Softly, As in a Morning Sunrise"), but Kirsten's renditions of "Romance," "The Saber Song," "The Girl on the Prow," "One Kiss," and the classic "Lover, Come Back to Me" are almost equally good. I've replayed this collection at least 20 times in the last month and I'll do it again. If hearing it doesn't it make you want more Romberg, your tastes are obviously not for classic operetta. Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Beautiful Music - Good Perfomances.......2006-03-25

Kirsten was a first class opera singer who sings this music with technique, voice and style. MacRae has a pretty voice- but I miss the true operatic baritone depth, volume of sound and range of Merrill, Tibbett or Nelson Eddy in this music.

5 out of 5 stars Superb singing.......2005-05-11

This album is not a "performance" but a studio recording of music from three operettas by the great Sigmund Romberg. The singing is superb. Gordon MacRae is a known quantity from his role in the movie version of "Oklahoma" and his voice is never disappointing. Dorothy Kirsten is less well known these days but her voice is well suited for operetta. This album is a deal as it contains most or all of the music of Sigmund Romberg and his lyricists for three operettas, "Desert Song", "New Moon" and " Student Prince". The only quibble with the album is that it begins with the weakest selection ("Student Prince") and if one plays it all the way through it's a long wait for "Desert Song" and the extraordinarily tuneful "New Moon". Most of the tunes are known these days (if at all) from instrumental "mood music" recordings. The singing of MacRae and Kirsten is enunciated well enough so one may enjoy lyrics as well, by the likes of Oscar Hammerstein III. The inclusion of all three operettas gives this album an advantage of the often mix-and-match approach to many available Macdonald & Eddy recordings.

3 out of 5 stars A KISS.......2004-02-21

SUNG BY MARIO LANZA, HE IS AND WILL BE THE GREATEST TENOR OF THIS GENERATION AND THE NEXT GENERATION TO COME.THIS MANS VOICE WAS ONLY PARTIALLY DEVELOPED,IF ONLY AT THE HOLLYWOOD BOWL IN 1947,IF ONLY HE WOULD HAVE TURNED HIS BACK ON MGM AND CONCENTRATED MORE ON ORERA HE WOULD HAVE REACH THE HIS GOAL,OPERA.I HEARD HIS VOICE WHEN I WAS 6 YEARS OLD.I DOH"T THINK HE DIED OF A HEART ATTACK,HE WAS HELPED.I AM 62 YEARS OLD, AND HAVE WAITED FOR ANOTHER VOICE LIKED MARIO LANZA BUT SO FAR NONE HAS MATERALIZED.

5 out of 5 stars Romberg never sounded better!.......2003-09-24

I am one of those who, as a great fan and collector of operetta songs, find this album (actually a compilation of 3 LPs from 1963) the single most brilliant one ever recorded.

There are very few singers who could get so completely into the spirit of the songs and characters of operettas as Gordon MacRae. A technically magnificent voice with a phenomenal range, vibrant intensity and great warmth and sincerity - the rare singer whose performances all felt spontaneous and who could go from caressing the ear one moment to singing in the most powerful tones the next - all in a glorious legit voice of course. His rousing numbers like "The Riff Song" from The Desert Song and "Stout-Hearted Men" from New Moon are so exilarating that they actually conjure up a larger-than-life vision. His haunting "Softly as in the Morning Sunrise" obliterates all other versions and in terms of passion expressed in song, it would be difficult to surpass his rendition of the Desert Song.

Kudos also of course to the everlasting charm, grace and talent of the great Dorothy Kirsten who sounds perfectly convincing and fetching as the youthful heroines she portrays even though she was already fiftyish at the time this was recorded. Her solos of "One Kiss", "Romance" and "Lover Come Back to Me" are nothing short of superb and convey the longing of her characters beautifully. Truly enchanting.

As someone who loves to compare as many versions as possible of the great musicals and operettas, I can truthfully say that I have never heard more exquisite versions of those songs anywhere. While many versions I have heard elsewhere seemed either over the top or emotionally detached, these ring with true romantic ardor and the arrangements are beautiful. If the beautiful duets like "Wanting You" from New Moon and "Deep in My Heart, Dear" from The Student Prince don't send shivers up your spine, nothing ever will. They litterally take your breath away.

I do feel, however, that a couple of the songs from the earlier MacRae version (from the early 50s) of The Student Prince rank a bit higher than the songs from this version if only for the fact that the arrangements of the "Student Marching Song and The Drinking Song" were livelier and performed not just by the chorus as they are here, but led by Gordon MacRae at his very best. I miss hearing him on those when I play this CD. (Most of the songs from his earlier versions of The Desert Song and The Student Prince are available on various CD compilations. His earlier version of New Moon has not been released on CD yet, but can be found on vinyl).

The Robert Wagner chorale is absolutely outstanding and does a splendid job throughout.

(Please note that the original vinyl albums of each show featured additional songs not included in this compilation and a finale medley).

Yes, I would definitely recommend this album to anyone who loves operettas, melodious songs and rich singing voices!

1 out of 5 stars Who Sang the "Gloria" song? .......2005-09-01

I've been lookin' for the song that Woody Harrelson started to sing to Rosie in the dressing room after she won on Jeopardy.
Woody sang a few bars and then what sounded like the actual song faded into the scene. Mainly the singer sang "My Gloria...my Gloria....Gloria, my Gloria" .
The singer sounded close to Bob Seger. So HOW CAN I GET MY HANDS ON THAT RENDITION THAT WAS USED IN THE MOVIE????? I rate this item very low because it did not include ALL the songs in the movie soundtrack....that's what a soundtrack is supposed to be!!!! I hope someone out there knows how to get this song!!! If you know who it is and how to get it, please write back to this review. THANX!!!!!!

2 out of 5 stars That Funky song you're looking for isn't on this CD.......2002-07-06

If you're like me, you pulled up this CD hoping to find the funky instrumental that provided the background for one of the game scenes. That song (for some unknown reason) isn't on this CD. The song you're looking for is called "Super Bad" or "Call Me Super Bad". It's from the Godfather of Soul, James Brown. You can pick up the original version on his greatest hits CD available from Amazon. I've been unable to locate the 100% instrumental version. I suppose it's possible that version was cut and mixed exclusively for the movie.

By the way, if you like that kind of funky music, but you have a hard time finding sources - I suggest you pull up a group called Galactic. These guys are from New Orleans and they're fairly current..I really like their "Coolin Off" CD...great production values and musicianship.

5 out of 5 stars another wonderful, yet overlooked CD.......2006-09-18

I got the chance to see Riff in concert back in 1991 and they put on a great show. I got this CD in 1995 mainly for 1 song "My Heart Is Failing Me" and I can't say enough good things about the whole CD. That one song is worth the CD. I love the harmony and the talent, and it is a shame that true talent like Riff and also groups like Shai are not popular today.

5 out of 5 stars SMOOTH, VIBRANT, UPBEAT & GENTLE..........2004-01-30

After making a notable appearance in the 1989 film 'Lean On Me,' Riff went on to release their debut album in early 1991. Their first single, "My Heart Is Failing Me" was, and still is a sparkling midtempo ballad that definitely foreshadowed relatively recent boyband creations like "Show Me The Meaning of Being Lonely" by the Backstreet Boys and "This I Promise You," by Nsync. However, Riff is probably most fondly remembered for "If You're Serious," another ballad that defined the summer of 1991 along with Color Me Badd's "I Wanna Sex You Up." The final single from this album was a remix of "Every Time My Heart Beats," an uptempo that is so peppy, it's hard not to smile when listening to it. If you enjoyed Bobby Brown's "Every Little Step," you'll probably be able to get into this one too. Especially if you can get a hold of the long-out-of-print single version.

The rest of this album is a consistent listen. The ballads "I Can't Believe We Just Met," "Little Girls," and "Read My Eyes" are as sugary sweet as a delicious ice cream sundae topped with all of your favorite dressings - and I do not exaggerate. "Baby It's Wonderful" has a more sophisticated sound than the others -- kind of like drinking fine wine on a balcony with the one you're interested in on a warm and balmy summer night.

There are some goofy moments: "Temporary Insanity," has a zany, Boyz II Men-ish vibe (with bass vocals and doo-wop motifs), and "April's Fool" is an uptempo about a cheating girlfriend. But overall, I cannot recommend this album enough for New Jack Swing enthusiasts who liked the more pop/R&B side of it. Nsync's JC Chasez made it a point to mention that Riff was one of his primary influences while a Mouseketeer before going on to superstardom during the Cheiron Pop Era of 1998-2001. And after listening to this album, you'll hear it.

The last thing I'll say is this: if you are even a remote fan of Shai ("If I Ever Fall In Love," "Comforter") then I'm pretty sure you will enjoy this album. Definitely one of my favorites from the era. And definitely under-recognized, and under-appreciated. It's nice to finally see this album available somewhere!

This is definitely one of the best albums of 1996. Although not publicized as much as it should have been...those who seek out music and artists beyond what's provided by MTV and radio most definitely found this album. It's melodic and dreamy in parts and loud and aggressive in others but still appealing to the mildest of music tastes. Being signed onto Smashing Pumpkins label may be there only fall back because they are repetitively compared to Corgan... people, listen to this album... they are without a doubt UNIQUE!!

      5 out of 5 stars Musical Geniuses.......1998-07-21

When I first listened to this album I wasn't really sure if I liked it. Then as time went on I found myself humming it and I'd have to hear it again and again. It's definitely not your run of the mill poppy music stuff that's out right now, I think it's ahead of its time. The lyrics are my favorite part, I would describe them as simplistically complex and most likely misinterpreted by the listener. Definitely an album that will grow on you and leave you wanting more!!
