5 out of 5 stars Two classic albums from 1969.......2005-05-03

Peggy mixes contemporary material with older songs on these two album, but whatever she sings, she does it her way brilliantly.

The first album, Natural woman, contains covers of All of a sudden my heart sings (Kathryn Grayson - from the movie Anchors aweigh), Don't smoke in bed (Billie Holiday), Can I change my mind (Tyrone Davis), Dock of the bay (Otis Redding), You make me feel like a natural woman (Aretha Franklin), Everyday people (Sly and the family Stone), Please send me someone to love (Percy Mayfield), Spinning wheel (Blood sweat and tears) and I think it's gonna rain today (Randy Newman). May of these are classic songs but Peggy's often-different interpretations bring a freshness to them.

Peggy also contributed a song of her own, Lean on me, which you must not confuse with the famous Bill Withers song of the same title. The only other song here, Living is dying without you, is also excellent though I'm not sure who first recorded it.

The second album, Is that all there is, yielded an unexpected American hit for Peggy. It deserved to be a big hit, of course, but Peggy had long since ceased to be a major force on the singles charts so this one came as a huge surprise. Maybe the song connected with the young people of the day in a way that Peggy's other singles didn't.

Possibly the success of the single created pressure for a quick album release - if so, this would explain the inclusion of songs that Peggy had recorded previously, such as I'm a woman, Something stupid and Don't smoke in bed, though at least some of them are re-recordings. Nevertheless, this is also a fine album. It includes covers of Love story (Randy Newman), Me and my shadow (Whispering Jack Smith), My old flame (Guy Lombardo), Brother love's travelling salvation show (Neil Diamond), Something (George Harrison) and Johnny (a gender-adapted version of the Randy Newman song, Linda).

While these are not the strongest albums ever recorded by Peggy Lee, they are both of an extremely high quality. Collecting all of Peggy's albums can be an expensive business assuming you can actually find them all, but this twofer is well worth the price.

5 out of 5 stars The Legacy of one of America's Musical Treasures.......2003-11-18

Opera has its Caruso, Callas, and Paroratti. The Great American Songbook has its Sinatra, Crosby, and Peggy Lee. Long after the flavor-of-the-week divas have joined the ranks of the forgotten one-hit wonders, these singers will continue to be celebrated. This two-for-the-price-of one collection brings together the material Ms. Lee recorded at the end of her career with Capitol. There is a lot of great material here, as well as some songs you may never care to hear for a second time. My favorite tracks are the ones that come from the critcally acclaimed album, "Is That All There Is?" I have nearly every Peggy Lee CD available; so I am more than pleased to add this production to my collection. If you are just starting to become familiar with Peggy Lee you might want to invest in one of her multi-disc compilations, preferably from her Capitol years. But if you are a Peggy Lee fan, then this current album is essential.

Amazon.com essential recording

It's astonishing how quickly Carole King slipped into relative obscurity. Tapestry has sold in excess of 22 million copies and was the biggest selling album of all time until Frampton Comes Alive surpassed it in 1977, yet while the latter remains at the very least an archetypal cultural kitsch, Tapestry has become a troublesome trivial question: "What's the bestselling album by a woman?" Part of the problem is that the singer-songwriter era she (and James Taylor and Carly Simon) came to represent hasn't aroused a whole lot of critical favor. Still, the restrained soul of King's best stuff (for instance, Tapestry, which is included here in its entirety) has it's own appeal, as do a few of the preblockbuster inclusions. --Steve Stolder

5 out of 5 stars Classic Carole King.......2006-07-11

When you get tired of listening to "Tapestry" you can switch to this album for a while. Great nostalgic experience, and I can't get "Up on the Roof" out of my head.

5 out of 5 stars 1968 - 1976 song's .......2006-01-10

I really love this album. I don't own this album, but I borrowed it from the library. I listened to it, before downloading onto my computer, when I did. I really love the way she hit's the piano key's on "Wasn't Born To Follow." "At This Time In My Life," just put's a picture in your head. Disc one inculdes "Tapestry," a classic album , but ties in some earlier song's , too. Oh, did I mention the lovely tune and lyric's Carole King tied into "Child Of Mine," and "Up On The Roof." By the way, nothing's wrong with you if you like Carole King, or if you hate her. Everyone has they're own thought, and your's count's. "Enjoy!"

4 out of 5 stars Hit-and-miss collection still worth hearing.......2005-07-21

Completely forgetting about her early Dimension singles(some of which, like "It Might as Well Rain" and "Nobody's Perfect", are gems)and choosing iffy album tracks over songs I've loved for years(like one of my favorites, "You Go Your Way, I'll Go Mine", arguably one of King's best songs), this 2-disc set still offers great moments and the entire "Tapestry" album(although the recent "Tapestry" remastering includes a bonus leftover not included here!). Two songs by King's unheralded pre-"Tapestry" band The City were enough to hook me("Wasn't Born to Follow" is gorgeously earnest)and a live track with James Taylor is a lotta fun. B+

5 out of 5 stars 5 STARS-Anyone who can't see this is a real waste of life !.......2004-07-02

After reading several negative reviews I was left with no choice but to write my own. I just purchased this set and I already knew it would be "GREAT"! Back in the early 70s when Carol King was pening & singing these songs Modern Rock music was not something that I listened to as I was and still am a true Country and Bluegrass music fan. Western Swing with the likes of the Great Bob Wills and Hank Thompson was the stuff I was into. Many of my friends at that time (30+ years ago)were dope smoking Hippies listening to that Hard Hard Rock Music of the day!During this timeI was wearing Motorcycle Boots with Ducktail short hair as I still am today at 50. The music of that time turned my stomach. I can still remember many folks going to them dope smoking rock concerts and my friends and me were buying tickets to go to the EastWind in Baltimore County to see Earnest Tubb and his Honky Tonk Band from TEXAS. To say the least I was a real hard sell for Hard Rock. A friend of a friend of mine was playing a record one day that I heard while I was back here in the States on leave from the Merchant Marines, it was Carol King's Tapastry. When I heard this music I thought to myself - Boy, this is some really good music ! After that first encounter I was sold and today over 30 years later I still know that Carol King is the Best Female Artist of our time. I have a huge Country Music collection of LPs,cassets and CDs with not much of any 1970s music except for Ms King .I have collected about eight of the Tapastry Album (I want to be able to pass down an original edition of this LP to each of my children and grandchildren as I have already given my oldest daughter who is 26 her copy) All my copys are in mint condition. I have more of Carol King then any other artist, even Johnny Cash ! So don't tell me nothing negative about this 2 CDset as I KNOW this is a real monument in music history ! "ENJOY"

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Collection All Of Her Greatest Songs Are Here.......2003-10-25

NATURAL WOMAN:The Ode Collection 1968-1976, is all you really need from this gifted songeriter and talented singer. All of her classic songs are in this fantastic 2CD box set, including her greatest masterpiece "Tapestry" in its entirety. This collection is really fantastic and it also includes her two top ten singles "Jazzman" which I think is one of the best songs that she ever wrote,(excellent saxsophone solo) and "Corazon" which she actually sings in Spanish. There are only two songs that I can think of that should of been included in this collection but sadly were omitted and those are "Hold On" from her LP "Simple Things" this is a beautiful track that she wrote as well and I especially love the soft mellow acoustic guitar that she herself plays on this song. The other is one called "Morning Sun" which she wrote and recorded for the closing credits of the movie "Wanda Nevada" starring Peter Fonda and Brooke Shields from 1979. Overall this is a the best Greatest Hits collection ever assembled on this unique artist who is highly regarded as the most successful and influential female songwriter of her generation. The songs of Carole King are as timeless like the woman who wrote and recorded them.

4 out of 5 stars Great, but no prize.......2002-03-31

The selections from the Ring trilogy, Friends in need and Fallen Angel were excellent, however, some of the special request such as joxer the mighty, seemed a little bit rushed. Wasn't that song on Volume 2 already? Where was M'Lila's song from Destiny, or the music played During the first Kiss in "The Quest"
The cd has its good points, personally "It's Over" from "THAB" with its haunting melodies portraying the consequences of war.

5 out of 5 stars Xena;Warrior Princess volume six.......2002-01-09

I am so happy that the last and final cd has come out, now my collection is complete. I am very sad for the show ending, but I am glad to still collect things.

5 out of 5 stars Great Collection.......2001-12-25

Well, I have them all by now, but this last one is a great collection, with the added bonus of the music from A Friend In Need.
Just another fine addition to my Xena collection!

5 out of 5 stars Exceptional.......2001-11-30

I am a fanatic and devoted Xenite.I have a huge problem:i can't stop listening to that cd,since the first time i listened to it,which means 1 month! That cd is really exceptional and i think that every true and genuine Xenite should buy it!It's really good!I was moved when i heard the Fallen Angel part.I was passioned when i heard the Ring Trilogy!I was astonishing when i heard the bonus cues that were included, especially the cue from The Quill Is Mightier(fishin part),oh,i was completely satisfied!
Though, there is a complain:i can't understand, why after 6 cd's,the producers don't do a cd including cues like:M'laila's song, the cues from the Bacchaen festival, music from Deja Vou All Over Again, where in the end,Gabrielle says to Xena those wonderful words,or even the scene of the kiss in The Quest! That,i can't understand it!
Last, i believe that whoever likes LoDuca's music style, should buy this cd.
Pay attention to the 22 cue:Pas De Deux Femmes. It is one of a something and whoever remembers what's the scene of this song, will agree with me!Mmmm!

4 out of 5 stars A MIX OF THE BEST, THE WORST AND THE MISSING.......2001-11-29

To all truly Xena fans this CD is a must-have but have some lacks... Fun (comedy episodes music) scores destroy the the great combination of FALLEN ANGEL, THE RHEINGOLD TRILOGY AND I FRIEND IN NEED. In the first selections LoDuca creates spectacular high level music good enough to be played in a Symphony orchestra concert. The others selections have easy-to-fill-space western cowboy music instead of put M'Lilas song of DESTINY, Amazon's climbing trees of ADVENTURES IN THE SIN TRADE and NAJARA vs XENA music that would be gladly accepted by us. I doubt the company will launch a next CD but if they'll do this track and another valuable more must be there and the adittion of some famous characters quotes like "I have many skills" from Xena.

4 out of 5 stars A Good Sampler.......2005-01-10

I would agree with the young reviewer who posted a favorable review of this album back in 2002 that this collection could be a very good intro to Aretha's music. It covers the period from the mid-60s to the mid-70s, which many would describe as her peak years. The same label released at least one other Aretha collection, so you can guess that the superhits are going to parceled out over the course of several records. That's fine, since it gives listeners a taste of what else the artist can do.

Of course, one thing that "best of" collections often throw in are cover versions of songs that were hits for OTHER artists. With a singer like Aretha, there will be fans who will champion her versions over the originals, and these are always debatable issues. Unlike the previous reviewer, however, there is no way that I would give Aretha's version of "Son of A Preacher Man" higher marks than Dusty Springfield's hit version of same. A bit too much overkill on a song that begs for subtlety and sultriness, I'd say. Similarly, I would have to disagree with the author of this album's liner notes, who claims that Aretha's take on "I Say A Little Prayer" is superior to Dionne Warwick's hit version. Beg your pardon, but NO WAY. It's an interesting take on a classic song, but again, it requires more elegance than hoopla. Soulful whoops on a Bacharach/David number are pretty much out of place. Besides it's really the Sweet Inspirations who carry this version of the song. Aretha practically bows out of the chorus. (By now, you're probably think I'm actually lying when I say her version IS interesting. Believe me, there was a time when I actively disliked it, but now I kind of have an understanding of what she was up to, and yes, I have come to appreciate it, but no, I do NOT find it superior to la Warwick's.)

I also have some arguments with her interpretations of some other pop classics. Her take on the Beatles' "Eleanor Rigby" is downright odd. Why turn it into a FIRST person narrative--"I'm Eleanor Rigby"--it almost doesn't make sense, since Eleanor DIES. Is this a voice from beyond the grave. You could also quibble with some of the deletions and alterations to the text of "Bridge Over Troubled Water," (there's just something a little awkward about the "sail on, silverboy" line; I dunno) but then again, if Paul Simon was actually thinking of Aretha when he wrote it, then he certainly got his wish.

But this is beginning to sound like a negative review, and it's not meant to be. Aretha has had any number of ups and downs over the course of her lengthy career. This sampler shows her in her prime and at her most assured. With so many packages out there, it's hard to recommend just one. But the title track "A Natural Woman" is one of her classics, and "Rock Steady" and "Nothing Like the Real Thing" are essential tracks as well. You could do a lot worse.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT COLLECTION FROM THE QUEEN OF SOUL.......2002-11-02

What more can be said about Aretha Franklin a great talent and good singer. With this mini collection {Released on the Rhino Records owned label Flashback} You get Aretha's less heard songs such as the fun The House that Jack Built to the ballad Ain't nothing like the real thing that was later covered by Marvin Gaye and Surpremes singer Tammi Terrell. There is also Son of a preacher man that was also sung by the late Dusty Springfield which I think Aretha's version is better than Dusty's. Then there is the cover of Carole King's hit you make me feel like a natural woman. This is a great cd if you like to hear some golden oldies or very intrested in any Aretha songs other than Respect. A good cd that is fun to listen to,

This compilation consists mainly of pop songs performed by female artists, from Bananarama to Kelly Clarkson. You're going to hear songs that you like and some that you don't like. Other than that, this compilation is average and is nothing to write home about. You're better off downloading the songs you like and calling it a day.
