3 out of 5 stars Has merit - needs work........2007-01-10

I have to admit this album is a bit catchy. If you are into simple electronica, it's not bad. Just not very sophisticated. You cannot go by the samples on the system here - it is both a bit different (higher energy) and a bit lacking. I thought this would be a low-key album, but instead I play it when working around the shop as an energizer. I've played it 3 times now, and will play it again someday when I'm looking for something I haven't heard for a while - otherwise not. Meanwhile buy "Skydancing" - highly recommended, but definitely slower paced and more spacy. OR maybe I just don't "get" Moodswings. One plus: I like the electronica/human voice mixing.

5 out of 5 stars Jeff Beck, Chrissie Hynde and Celestial Ambient Music !.......2006-10-19

What a gem of a CD. Its flow is ambient and somewhat celestial. It includes an interlude from Martin Luther King. Out of the blue comes a blistering and spellbinding Jeff Beck electric guitar masterpiece titled "SkinThieves". To top things off Chrissie Hynde's angelic voice graces the album. A one of a kind CD. It is soothing, spiritual and mystical !

5 out of 5 stars Yummy....and you will never be full.......2006-08-11

Want a good album to put on when you have company over and try to get them to figure out what it is? This is it. Changes from one style of music to another while still remaining coherent. One of my favorite "bedroom" CD's as well. In terms of production and quality, it's up there with "dark side of the moon". In terms of content, you just have to hear it for yourself there is no point in explaining it, be bold, spend the money, and enjoy!!!!

4 out of 5 stars After 7 songs..........2005-02-20

It gets good... Not much of an ambient music lover but I did enjoy the music after #7... The last song.. like previous fan said before me is a gem... but it can get cheesy but to sit down and listen to something that is non racist and non conforming for just 3 minutes is good in my opinon... state of indepedence is beautifull good job moodswings...

5 out of 5 stars Moodfood...indeed!.......2004-08-01

I purchased this CD very shortly after its release, and it was in my player constantly for several months before retiring to my archives, where I pull it out on occasion and re-immerse myself in the aural bliss it brings. Spiritual High is especially wonderful, but my very favorite track is Skin Thieves and the incredible guitar work of Jeff Beck. It's a superblaster!! The rest of the CD is wonderful though as well, and does indeed produce aural bliss for tired minds.

Billy Bragg producer Grant Showbiz bids, on this second Moodswings disc, to become the '90s answer to Mike Batt--the Brit impresario (remember the Wombles?) who produced kitchen-sink instrumental exotica for the lumpen proletariat in the late '70s. That's Tanita Tikaram (we think) in "Together as One (Luminous)," but she brings little to an album that is essentially faux electronica/world beat for boutique browsers. --Jeff Bateman

5 out of 5 stars Never beaten.......2005-04-13

I have listened to this album on average three times a week for the past few years. There's a flow and a rhythm that no words can describe. There are no albums like it - enigma feels too spacy and with no real path. Some Air and Mellow tracks come close to grasping the feeling, but they both lack continuity. This album will never cease to amaze me, nor will you regret buying it. Although, part of me selfishly wants people not to buy it - the album is so intensely personal that I want it to be mine and only mine. But still - buy it!

5 out of 5 stars Perfect for ANY Mood!!.......2001-09-19

I became familiar with Moodswings in 1994, with their debut - Moodfood (1992) - unfortunately, just missing the CD Single for Spiritual High.
I thought Moodfood was wonderful - and was blown away when I first heard Psychedelicatessen. I've listened to it at least a hundred times and have never grown bored of it!! It's a beautiful musical journey - from the beat-driven to the ethereal. It's been a soundtrack to a large portion of my life; it fits in about EVERY situation. It's inspired me in my Architecture studio, motivated and relaxed me at home; it's warmed me up to go out on party weekends and brought me back to earth afterwards. I have yet to find anyone who hasn't enjoyed it; friends who know request it often.
Do me a favor - once you've listened to it, write to Arista and ask them to bring Showbiz & Hood back together for another!!

5 out of 5 stars An uplifting swirl of psychedelic pop.......2001-01-05

I don't know anything about the people who produced this music, but I heard it on the radio a couple of years ago and went right out and bought it. That happens very rarely with me! The music on this disc continually unfolds in the most exquisite way as one track blends into the other. The instrumentals are lush and fascinating, and when the vocalists enter, they are unintrusive (if you don't want to listen to words) but also very inspiring if you listen to what they are saying! Even "Destruction & Destroy", despite the harsh sound, has a positive message. This is the kind of music that carries a message of hope for the future without getting maudlin or preachy about it. The snide critic who talks about "faux electronica" is missing the point. This is not meant to be some kind of edgy, post-apocalyptic trip album along the lines of the Orb (who I also enjoy on different occasions), much less anything along hardcore techno lines. This is made to be mainstream, accessible music for the masses, but of a higher quality than the disposable junk produced by the big record companies. Moodswings don't sell millions of albums but the world would be better if more people fed their minds with this kind of music!

5 out of 5 stars ABSOLUTE, UTTER, SHEER PERFECTION!.......1999-11-01

The things that amazes me the most is the speed with which these people play their instruments and, still, maintain flawlessness! Moodswings is a mind-boggling group who is truly unique and will maintain that position for a long time! It just doesn't get any better than this bunch! Need to put some oomph into your life? Here it is!

5 out of 5 stars Memorable melodies delivered from steel drums to solo piano.......1999-02-11

Once I heard the debut CD, "MoodFood", I had to get this one and it didn't disappoint. This album is what a 5 star rating should be. Every track delivers.

The music is mainly instrumental ranging from driving rhythms (such as 'Dancing is Important) to ethereal musings (such as 'Together As One'). The opening symphonic overture is still my most favorite music (there is a tempo shift that defies explanation but I can listen to it all day)...

4 out of 5 stars Live sounds good.......2006-01-17

This is my first CD by Moodswings, and I had really high hopes for this one, even though I bought this without knowing what song would be on this CD, or without knowing anything for the matter.

1. Tabla Motown (4.57): Starts off slow. This one has some really nice drums, it makes you want to dance. 4/5

2. Crunch (4.00): Up-tempo, with parts of "State of Indepence". 3/5

3. Back to Basics (3.11): Up-tempo as well. Nothing in particular. 3/5

4. Hozanna (6.09): Starts off slow with a man speaking, then the music picks up. Quite a pretty song. Nice touch with the choir. 4/5

5. Live Longer! (Spiritual High) (9.31): My favourite. It has that great theme we all know, really moody! Also contains "I have dream" by Luther King 5/5

6. Brutal (8.37): Another favourite of mine. Sounds like a soccer anthem. Has a great beat. 5/5

It's a shame this doesn't have "State of Independence", because that's the song which got me into learning more about Moodswings. This CD also has only 6 track, so I wish it were longer. I normally hate Live CDs, because of all the cheering and clapping in the back ground, however this CD has very little of the audience present. Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars Electronically live..........2000-12-11

When I first heard Moodswings I wondered how would they sounded "live", but I then dismissed it since "live" is something that not often occurs with electronic artist. When I first saw Live at Leeds I guessed it was something promotional, having nothing to do with Moodswings, but, when I listen to it, especially to Spiritual High, I started to believe that, if something electronic was going to be live, I defenitelly has to be Moodswings. I cannot express into words the feeling of listening to this beatuful song by Jon Anderson and Vangelis played so wonderful by Moodswings. If you like the band, buy it, it will re-affirm all you feel about them, and if you do not listened to them yet, this CD could be a good start, don't you think? [It's wonderful, specially when listening into the car in a long route to the south a rainy day]

The brilliant Brodsky Quartet is at it again, offering entertaining, virtuosic collaborations with stars of the pop music world with which both classical and popular music lovers will be equally entranced. Whether it's lolling strings underpinning Meredith Monk's enchanting, wordless syllables or assisting Jacqui Dankworth in a torch-like ballad (The Abyss) or nervous pizzicati to go along with a song by Sting, the ear is constantly being treated to a new surprise: if a quartet of strings and a voice can do it, they do it here. Errolyn Wallen and the Brodskys offer a languid ballad called "Daedalus," while Bjork puts her usual, original (if vaguely tiresome) stamp on "I've Seen It All." The CD opens and closes with songs sung by Elvis Costello whose unique, vibrato-filled voice remains remarkably expressive; the last number, "Real Emotional Girl," is a Randy Newman song in which the strings of the Brodskys feel and put across the singer's anguish in equal partnership. A one-of-a-kind CD. --Robert Levine

5 out of 5 stars Errollyn Wallen will break your heart and put it back together again........2006-05-01

Errollyn Wallen's track, Daedalus, will break your heart and put it back together again. This is a quiet, absolutely beautiful testament to her power, verve and finesse as a composer. Genius.

4 out of 5 stars Appropriate Title for Sharp Performances on a Bumpy Road.......2005-06-06

The Brodsky Quartet remains as audacious as ever with their new recording. This time out, the intensely dramatic string quartet spent time in select UK schools where they composed new songs with schoolchildren. Those are presented here alongside the quartet's arrangements of songs by more established writers such as Elvis Costello, Sting, Björk and Ron Sexsmith. The result could have been a mess, but it's not. Far from it, it's a soulful and sometimes challenging album adhering together rather tenuously as an avant-garde theatrical album. There are several peaks and valleys throughout, though luckily the high points make this a worthwhile disc to get.

Sting's performance of his gypsy ballad, "Until...", sounds especially influenced by Kurt Weill, as does Björk's familiar dirge, "I've Seen It All", from her 2000 cinematic foray with Lars von Trier, "Dancer in the Dark". Jacqui Dankworth lends a languorous vocal to Kate Curtis' and Will South's "The Abyss" and the more funereal "Song" by Daniel Monk. And a nice surprise is the Gershwin-inspired "I Never Went Away" by Richard Rodney Bennett, though it does feel a bit out of place among the more experimental music. Truth be told, some tracks are plain odd, such as Meredith Monk's "Gotham Lullaby" with its random yelps and minor-chord la-la's and Errollyn Wallen's meandering, overlong "Daedalus", a rather pretentious art song. The schools provide two of the highlights here: "Swearing at the Moon" by Arieh Miller of JFS in London, and Venus Flytrap by students from Blatchingham Mill School in Hove. Both songs are performed by Ian Shaw, whose biting vocal mixes well with the discordant string arrangements. Elvis Costello frames the recording with the jaunty opener, "My Mood Swings" and his closing cover of Randy Newman's "Real Emotional Girl", a slow, heartbreaking ballad with Newman's trademark observations. The quartet itself performs with their brio intact, applying a lot of color and texture to the songs.

1 out of 5 stars Moodswings~ Mettle Music.......2004-10-07

Do not buy this CD believing it to be by the group Moodswings, famous for Moodfood, Psychadelicatessen and Horizontal. It is actually a CD called Moodswings by the group Mettle Music. I have reported this to Amazon as their search criteria is very misleading. Once again, this is Moodswings by Mettle Music, not Mettle Music by Moodswings.

3 out of 5 stars set your stereo for selective shuffle.......2003-11-14

A disappointing first track almost turned me off and almost had me turning off this lush, jazzy house infused artist album from Manchester duo Nic Conef and Mark Wadsworth, aka Mettle Music. But once you get past the minor-chorded strings gone wrong, "Better Days" have indeed come. Its Deep Mix is appropriately named, and I could see San Francisco or Ibiza house
heads grooving to this perfectly balanced tune. "Pacific Motion" nods again at the West Coast, replacing the sultry female vocals of "Better Days" with soulful Spanish guitar. The album is tracked with no audible gaps between songs, and from track 2 on the CD does flow like a well planed out mix. "Sleepy Head" takes it down a few notches, but before you nod off, skip to the sublime Spanish singing, lush guitar and horns of "El Mar." an instant chilllout classic. Unfortunately, the albums lows are as intense as its highs, but if you don't mind settting your stereo to do a selective shuffle, you can close your eyes and pretend that you're watching a sunrise over the ocean, no matter where you are.
