Pretty bad overall.......2004-03-29
Songs are great but the sound quality is not........1999-09-07
Unfortunately though the mix and overall sound is not much greater than a bootleg. Songs like Killer and Runaway sound muffled at times and the first song does not start until about 2 minutes into the cd (it begins with a muffled entrance/interview with the band before taking the stage).
My advice is to pick up Shine On which has an excellent mix and perhaps the Guy Speranza/pre-Fire Down Under live release (I don't have this one)instead.

Album Description
Formed in December 1998 in Japan, Ellegarden made their explosive debut with the 2001 release of their self-titled album. Over the next six months, the band did an amazing four nationwide tours, managing to insert countless street and in-store performances in between. Music festivals have been a major part of their music resume, with appearances at top-level Japanese events such as the Rising Sun Festival and Summer Sonic (which also featured Oasis, Weezer and The La's). They also appeared as the opening act for Sum 41's Japanese tour in early 2005. Vocalist/guitarist Takeshi Hosomi utilizes both English and Japanese, adding an extra touch to the positive lyrics and punkish power-pop that defines the band. An instant hit among Japanese youth, achieving extreme popularity almost equal to that of major-label bands, Ellegarden are undoubtedly the premier power-pop band in Japan.Customer Reviews:
damn good album........2006-05-07
while most (99% maybe) CD albums today OR in the past include a few hit songs that are good.. usually around 3-5 songs.
this album by Ellegarden really is NOT one of those.
it really is so damn good that every single song on the album have the quality of a hit song.
if you're a rock music fan, then I highly recommend it.
if not, you should try it out. because this album has SOUL in it.
ps: I also recommend "Yggdrasil" by a Japanese rock band named Bump of Chicken. that's also one of those albums that is filled with great songs.
AMAZING!!!!.......2006-04-08
I'm Japanese so I've heard lots of music in Japan, but what I thought when I listen J-Pops, that was a kind of borring.
Their songs have really good lyrics IN ENGLISH, so maybe you can listen free from stress (of course some songs have Japanese lyrics...).
Please check'em out. After you listen, you can understand why I recomended you to have the one!!!
Solid output from the Elle.......2006-03-19
What makes the band unique, and what is ultimately their chance at success overseas, is that the sing in both English and Japanese - most songs are one or the other, while some are a fine-tuned mix. Lead vocalist and guitarist Takeshi Hosomi is fluent in English, and while there's certainly an occasional phrase that doesn't quite fit, his English lyrics will remind most listeners of New Found Glory, Simple Plan, and earlier Sum 41 recordings. His Japanese songs are much stronger as they let him explore his full range, and you can feel the emotions that go into his lyrics, even if you aren't fluent in the language.
Riot on the Grill is composed of 10 tracks totalling only half an hour, but the strength of the band is certainly apparent, as are one or two of their weaknesses. Strong English tracks include the coming-of-age Red Hot, the non-sensical but catchy TV Maniacs, and the mournful I Hate It. While there are only three Japanese songs on the album, they're also some of the best overall tracks - Rainbow (Niji) is one of the strongest songs in their library, but Missing (their 5th maxi-single) and Monster are both equally enjoyable.
The album falls flat in a couple places - Marry Me, while a personal favorite of mine, has a couple unfortunate "Engrish" portions which may turn one or two people off. BBQ Riot Song is in my opinion the weakest track on the album, an example of the band going for a more clashy sound rather than catchy melodies and harmonies. Of course, where the album fails the most is its length, as mentioned above - although most of the tracks are great, the album is still only 30 minutes long, and will leave fans of the band wanting more.
Overall, while I wouldn't call this my favorite Ellegarden album (that honor goes to either Bring Your Board or Pepperoni Quattro), it's still a great CD and will hopefully lead to future U.S. releases from the band.

30 years later... still powerful and heavy.......2006-09-23
Despite their unquestioned musical strength, Riot has never been too big Stateside since the very early 80's. They have had a loyal following in Europe in the 90's and Japan for the past couple of years. From traditional heavy metal discs to more melody-driven power-inspired releases, Riot have morphed from album to album, opting for a decidedly more European sound. Army of One certainly retains this direction, but also harkens back to a noticeable American rock sound during certain moments. The band has without doubt undergone a less heavy yet more hard rock-inspired phase recently, with strong reference points being Rainbow and Deep Purple. The first song, also one of the fastest and most energetic on the album, pounds you into submission with a Dio era Rainbow vibe going on, utilising killer dual lead work, and ferocious bass playing.
And while there are plenty of heavy numbers on the album, DiMeo's vocals veer off into David Coverdale meets Joe Lynn Turner territory in many places. The hard-hitting, groove-filled riffs of "One More Alibi" would be a good example. The instrumentation is loud and heavy, but DiMeo tries an unmistakable 80's style recalling the voice of Jorn Lande quite a bit. "It All Falls Down", another highlight of the disc, is also comprised of ruthless riffage with a stomping drive and clean-toned harmonies. Surrounded by big crescendos, DiMeo lets out impressive screams through and through, but he still chooses to stick to the 80's more so than he has in years. On the more hard rock pieces, such as "Knocking at My Door", evoking Sammy Hagar's solo material thanks to its backing vocals and rising keyboards; or the bluesy "Helpin' Hand" are stamped with repeating choruses and big guitar hooks. "Alive in the City", in particular, has a very heavy southern flair to it, in an almost American folk kind of vein. It does deviate from that after the main riff, however, and lets Pete Perez drive it with thick, pumping bass riffery.
Those interested in the band's heavier work displayed on albums like Inishmore should have a listen to "The Mystic", featuring awesome guitar work, some really agressive singing, and long instrumental breaks. Even the material recalls the days with Jarzombek behind the skins. Sadly, while the best on the album, this song does not fit the overall flow of Army of One. It feels far too isolated among all the multiple-chorus 80's pieces. There is also a neat instrumental cut, "Stained Mirror", with effective guitar work by band leader Mark Reale. The song also receives some keyboard support in its climax towards the finale.
The band's fans in Japan and Europe will love this album, while in the USA, they will continue to be constantly unrecognised, with the exception of their loyal cult fans following them wherever they go.
(Please note I do not have the Japanese release of this album. My copy contains twelve songs. The live track listed here is a bonus song for the Japanese import.)

Can't Break Me [Japan Import]
Edwin Dare ProductGroup: Music Binding: Audio CD ASIN: B000LK3IGC |
Product Description
1995, Teichiku records Japan. One of the best true hard rock/metal groups to emerge in the 90s from the USA, and unfortunately, gain very little recognition. This was their second album, a followup to the masterpiece "The unthinkable deed" from 1994. Combining the raw metal power of bands like late 80s Leatherwolf, and Malice, with an added hair metal groove of bands like Skid Row, and Dirty Rhythm, and a lead singer who could give Geoff Tate a run for his money both in the mid, and high range. Ten tracks including: Feel the power, Don't listen to your head, Nevre had time, Lies, This warrior, Test of will, Can't break me, and more. Out of print since 1998 in Japan.

On the Edge [Japan Import]
BB Steal ProductGroup: Music Binding: Audio CD ASIN: B000LA8Y2U |
Product Description
1991, Mercury Japan. Out of print import of this superb debut by British rockers BB Steal. Produced by Phil Collen of Def Leppard (and the similarities to Def Leppard's Hysteria album are undeniable throughout). 10 Tracks.Customer Reviews:
Hysterical.......2007-03-17
On the plus side, this album makes for a much better follow-up to Hysteria than Adrenalize ever did.
The track listing is as follows:
1. On the Edge
2. Big Love
3. Ride On
4. Suffer in Silence
5. Live It Up
6. Shot Full of Love
7. Precious Love
8. Love Me and Leave Me
9. Heartbeat Away
10. Troubled Child
NOTE: Before you shell out the big bucks for this album, make sure you know what you're getting. Just because it's labeled "Japanese" doesn't mean it's 100% legit. I've got nothing against bootlegs (in fact, my copy of On the Edge is a CDR), but I can't see paying outrageous prices for them.
