5 out of 5 stars Finally got it.......2006-03-22

I have been after this cd for a long time, it is not available in Australia. One song on this album is not on any of his other albums (The Legend of Andrew McCrew). It is excellent quality too.

5 out of 5 stars Classic Americana.......2002-06-14

"Homeless Brother" deserves to be held up beside America's greatest folk gems. A masterpiece.

4 out of 5 stars More to this singer than "American Pie.".......2002-01-20

People who dismiss Don McLean as a one-hit wonder forget that, 1) he had more than one hit ("Vincent," "Dreidel" and his cover of Roy Orbison's "Crying") and, 2) making hit records was never his be-all and end-all. The best thing "American Pie" ever did for McLean was make it possible for him to make the albums HE wanted to with little regard for the suits, and HOMELESS BROTHER is a great example of a "loose" concept album that holds together quite well.

The concept--exploring the stories of the down-and-outers of the road--could've been overly-romantic in the hands of someone else, but McLean is careful to show the dark side. "Legend of Andrew McCrew" is the best example, a macabre and apparently true story of a traveling carnival's exhibition of the mummified corpse of an anonymous hobo found dead and unclaimed by railroad tracks. McLean's retelling of this is sardonic without being too heavy-handed and the song and performance work. The title song is in the same vein as songs like "Hobo's Prayer" and "Hobo's Lullaby," and covers of George Harrison's "Sunshine Life For Me (Sail Away, Raymond)" and a terrific acapella version of "Crying In The Chapel" (featuring the Persuasions on backup!) are excellent and serve this overview well.

The songs that don't fall into this concept are a mixed bag; McLean is capable of more than a little schmaltz and in a couple of songs it's a little too much, but "Wonderful Baby" is a great Thirties-style crooning tune sung for a newborn that swings and soothes.(I understand that Fred Astaire later covered this--I can believe it!) Overall, this album shows Don McLean as a troubador in fine form, which is what it ought to be all about.

5 out of 5 stars A nice surprise.......2001-07-08

A tape pf this ablum somehow appeared in my car about 20 years ago. I listened to it and fell in love; you can sing along, cry along or laugh along .... and all those emotions are sure to be triggered.

Being an ICU nurse the tale of Andrew McCrew especially sticks my heart and my rather twisted sense of humor.

Thanks for more information on the album...will definately have to try to pick up a CD. Charlie Lake Elsinore

4 out of 5 stars Don McClean the storyteller does what he does best........1999-03-11

This album, released in 1974, was not a huge commercial success for Don, but artistically it is very representative of his work. And, true to form, it is a bit quirky at times. Like "The Legend of Andrew McGrew", the story of a hobo who was killed by a train near the turn of the century, and was mummified and displayed as a carnival attraction for 50 years!

A very special tune is "Wonderful Baby". A good tune, and one that should have become a standard.

All-in-all, one of Don's better works, and a must for a serious collector.

4 out of 5 stars Includes Rare Early Recordings by Tab Benoit & Joe Bonamassa.......2007-05-18

What initially drew me to this Cd was the inclusion of two of my favorite guitarists - Ronnie Earl & Joe Bonamassa. What was surprising is that Joe recorded his track when he was only 15. Although the song comes across like a '70's Foghat tune, Joe certainly shows signs of things to come as he was pretty amazing even then. The best song is Tab Benoit's superb 'Nice and Warm.' Surpisingly both of his tracks are his first recordings done in 1992. It's easy to see why he's gone on to have a successful career. Guitar Rhumba shows Sue Foley's ability, but it comes in at a very short 2.5 minutes. Some poignant other songs which drive home the Cd's theme and reason for being - to provide financial support and raise awareness for a good cause - the National Coalition for the Homeless. At around $3, it's definitely a bargain.

4 out of 5 stars Must own- nearly a 5.......2007-01-25

A couple dud tracks keep this from being a 5, but the good tracks are great.

The version of Nice and Warm Tab Benoit laid down for this is better than the original release, and as close to live as you'll get, and Clarence Gatemouth Brown will raise the hair on the back of your neck with The Drifter.

Interspersed between some serious blues is some more folksy stuff and some nice piano work from Dr. John, but the whole album works very well as a whole for a collaboration. In time, you'll find that the powerful Brother Can You Spare a Dime is as much a favorite as the more raucus, gritty work by Benoit and Gatemouth. The samples selected to listen to don't really convey how good this album is.

As I type this there are used copies for $2.99- buy one already.

Ladysmith Black Mambazo proved itself pliable enough when the a capella group was heavily featured on Paul Simon's Graceland. Other crossover collaborations have followed, but few work as seamlessly as this collection, which features old LBM songs, Zulu traditionals and European classical material done in collaboration with the English Chamber Orchestra. The rich vocal sound literally fuses with the classical musicians in much the same way as a classical choral group does. To its credit, the orchestra (and arranger Isak Roux) loosens up to fit the more oral/aural traditions of the singers--the music is less precise and reliant on virtuosity. The orchestra provides a particularly sympathetic counterpoint on the traditional "Awu Wemadoda" and is downright playful sounding on "Dona Nobis Pacem." Sounding as elegant and reverent, Ladysmith more than meets the orchestra halfway on the famous Bach choral piece "Jesu, Joy Of Man's Desiring." Making borders and boundaries irrelevant, this is a work of startling beauty that couldn't be improved upon. --Tad Hendrickson

5 out of 5 stars Simply Amazing!.......2007-02-12

I have been a fan of Ladysmith for many years and have a few of their albums but this is simply amazing! Music truly has no boundaries and they have used their God given talent to touch the lives of many people. It doesn't sound like it's possible, but they have really crossed many boundaries and this album is just another example of how far one can go if only they believe!

5 out of 5 stars One world.......2007-01-12

This CD has multipal messages, but the one that strikes me most is the juxtaposition of European "classical" and African "classical". The human soul is one and at the same time unique. That message comes through clearly, and as a bonus, the powerful messages that each track provides in both content and style must not be missed.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful.......2005-04-26

I had never heard of this group before and since I like to investigate different types of music, I decided to give it a try. I have truly enjoyed this CD. The more I listen, the more I like. I would highly recommend.

5 out of 5 stars Breathtaking! .......2005-02-11

When I first saw the album, I thought---what???? Traditionally, Ladysmith Black Mambazo sings acapella with the notable exceptions of the times they accompany Paul Simon. The group sings a beautiful, close harmony and uses vocalese techniques to provide the occasional percussive click or ululation. Still, the lineup was hard to resist.

"No Boundaries" is pretty amazing stuff, let me tell you. With the help of the English Chamber Orchestra directed by Ralph Gothoni, the two groups meet together on each other's common ground. Ladysmith sings traditional "Amazing Grace", Bach's "Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring" Schubert's "Sanctus." Then the orchestra gets into the African groove for music from South Africa.

Altogether a beautifully arranged, sung, and orchestrated work. If you are new to Ladysmith, this is a good CD to start. If you're an old fan, you'll definitely want "No Boundaries" to complete your collection.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful. Simply beautiful........2005-02-05

The collaboration between Ladysmith Black Mambazo and the English Chamber Orchestra cannot be improved. The sound that both ensembles make together truly is beautiful indeed, as the original Mambazo songs (of which includes "Jabulani (Rejoice)", "Lifikile Ivangeli (The Gospel Arrives)"), the Zulu traditional selections ("Awu Wemadoda (Hey, Man)", "Walil'Umntwana (The Child is Crying)") to the classicals "Dona Nobis Pacem", a joyous song in its own right, "Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring" and "Ave Verum Corpus". This album definately and distinctly proves that music has no boundaries. Mambazo founder and lead singer Joseph Shabalala and Orchestra conductor Ralf Gothoni (along with arranger Isak Roux) have brought to their many fans a selection of compelling and captivating tunes.

Open up a blender, insert the vibe of old-school U2, the edge of Alice & Chains, and the poetry of Peter Gabriel, and you would come up with something close to this album.

They are developing a solid midwestern club following. Having checked them out live a couple of times, I found the album captures their energy. These guys rock.

Album Description

Thought-provoking and moving music by eight modern composers spans the range of expression from solo cello to chorus, from jazz ensemble to woodwind quintet.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Historically significant choral works, wonderfully performed.......2004-05-31

For over 10 years, The VocalEssence Ensemble Singers and Chorus (conducted by Philip Brunelle) has presented an enduring series of concerts showcasing the talents of trailblazing African American composers. Now this wealth of music is available outside the concert hall through a series of recordings called WITNESS.

DANCE LIKE THE WIND presents works by eight African American composers from various generations, though they all emerged after the neo-classical period of non-discrimination. You'll hear loyalty to classic idioms like the spirituals and blues, but also elements of more recent genres like R&B, gospel and rap. Enclosed are excellent liner notes and biographical information.

The other three CDs are available as single titles, or in the boxed set entitled THE WITNESS COLLECTION which includes:

WHAT A MIGHTY GOD: Spirituals and Gospels for Chorus
GOT THE SAINT LOUIS BLUES: Classical Music in the Jazz Age
SKYWARD MY PEOPLE ROSE: Music of William Grant Still

5 out of 5 stars Spellbinding male vocal chorus!.......2002-07-27

Periodically a CD comes across my desk that leaves me totally breathless and excited beyond words. Behind The Scenes Homeless CD is just one of those works that made the heart palpitate and the blood rush like a torrid river through my veins. Everything about this music is flawless, from Melrow's self-harmony to the driving dance/goth grooves. Dare I say that it blows the Sisters of Mercy and The Merry Thoughts out of the water? If ever an underground work was ready for cross over appeal to the broadcast arena, this is the CD that can and should do it. To add more to the pot of good fortune, the US release has additional tracks, a remix by DJ Shok, one from Rogue of The Cruxshadows and the single version of the song human, currently available on MP3.com.

This CD is getting a LOT of New York club play and with good reason. It appeals to both fans of synth-pop and goth rock without veering towards either side too heavily.

Dare I say that this Cd is like a drug? Once you turn it on, you never want it to end. One can easily get mentally lost into the background choruses, which will spin your mind into a swirling dervish style of ecstasy. By the time you have played the CD for the third time in succession, which you will once you hear it in its entirety, you will be singing along to every song.

Rather than belabor the issue with a song-by-song detail, just trust that every track on this CD is a mesmerizing masterpiece that you just MUST own. I know my next quest is to locate any other music by this band because I simply will not want go without any of their work. So in three words: BUY THIS NOW!

Brazilian-born percussionist Airto Moreira is a heavy hitter whose résumé includes Miles Davis's legendary Bitches Brew in 1970, two Return to Forever LPs with Chick Corea, and Mickey Hart's Planet Drum. But if you think that means Airto's an old fart, guess again. Homeless is as radical a world-music CD as you're ever likely to find. The rarified vocals on "700 Years" and a few other cuts emphasize atmosphere over melody, meaning you won't be whistling these songs on your morning commute. But the hard-edged polyrhythms and mile-deep percussive textures will definitely rev your engine. Drum machines, samples, space synths, and hip-hop beats contributed by the Factor lend the disc a techno sensibility. But the highest voltage rhythms come from traditional instruments including bells, cymbals, mouth bow, timbales, drum kits, and an arsenal of hand drums wielded by Airto, Changuito, Pablo Silva, Meia Noite, and Amen Santos. The results combine free-floating Afro-Latin music with indigenous American touches, positing unity of spirit as an exhilarating antidote to the undercurrent of modern angst. --Bob Tarte

After an eight year hiatus, Airto is back and even better than before. If you like percussion, especially of the Brazilian type, this album is for you. Airto is as cleverly mischievious as ever with his cut, "After These Messages" and is having a good time throughout. Wife, Flora appears on several cuts and is especially fine on "Wake Up Now" a cut almost ready for the pop charts.

A very satisfying comeback album and I hope, the first of many more.

A cyberfriend from the N. Y. Times Classical Music Forum, an American ex-patriot living in Sweden, knowing my liking for the music of Paul Winter, particularly his sax/organ duets with Paul Halley, recommended this Anders Paulsson album. His reasoning was straightforward: This unique and totally fresh album includes three such duets: Lullaby for Joe Rubin, Anthem for the Homeless, and Toccata in D, all written by Paulsson. They are brilliant, and brilliantly performed, in a style that is quite unlike the "Cathedral blues" style of Winter and Halley, now celebrating the 20th year of their collaboration.

Paulsson is an instrumentalist on this horn the likes of which I don't believe I've ever heard. I consider myself a "student" of Paulsson's instrument, thanks to Winter, and am therefore familiar with other European soprano saxophonists such as Jan Garbarek and John Harle. But I was totally unprepared for Paulsson's technique, which is, in a word, staggering. While I continue to prefer Paul Winter's way with phrasing and improvisation, and, most particularly, embrochure and tone quality, I cheerfully concede that Anders Paulsson may well be the most proficient technician of this often-misplayed instrument. (Think "Kenny G" to get my point.) Pride of place in these three duets clearly goes to Toccata in D, Paulsson's Op. 20, a tour de force for him and Andrew Canning on organ.

But the album title is about singing, and singing of some well-known and not-so-well-known spirituals is the main focus of the album. And the singing is simply drop-dead gorgeous, by the St. Jacob's Chamber Choir of Stockholm. Led for more than fifteen years by Gary Graden, another American ex-patriot, their voices, and their clear English diction, might well have come from a gospel choir in these United States. The opening track, Deep River, is worth the cost of the album by itself.

Approximately in the middle of the album is a cantata in seven parts entitled Feet of Jesus, based on texts by Langston Hughes, the great African-American "blues poet" of the Harlem Renaissance. Written by Judith Cloud, a composer from Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff, this cantata is the centerpiece and the true highlight of the album, notwithstanding all the good points already mentioned about both the spirituals and Paulsson's own compositions and duets. Very moving; beautifully done.

In preparing this review, I of course had the opportunity to read Professor Cloud's comments about her composition and its inspiration, written elsewhere on this album page. It's a small world indeed when one reads that a large part of her inspiration came from a performance by Anders Paulsson that she had earlier heard in the marvelous acoustic space of the Cathedral of St. John the Divine in New York, where Paul Winter is the principal artist in residence.

I thank my American friend living in Sweden for bringing this terrific album to my attention. Otherwise, I might well have missed it completely. Here's hoping that my thoughts on it will work the same wonders on you that the music has on me.

    5 out of 5 stars Wonderful.......1999-09-01

This is no easy listening or spectacular commercial gospel. But this music is so warm and heartfelt it really touches you deep inside. Astonishing work by one of the best choirs in the world.

5 out of 5 stars I give this recording my highest recommendation!.......1999-05-26

Gary Graden's Kammarkör proves, again, the power of music to soothe the spirit and inspire the soul. "Spiritual" not just as it evokes the rich repertoire of African-American song, this recording moves the spirit in contemporary ways from Anders Paulsson's plaintive soprano sax to John Williams's (baritone) urgent rendition of "Before the Marvel of the Night" and the concluding South African "Honono." Williams joins Marymal Holmes (soprano) in an exquisitely beautiful rendition of "Bright Morning Stars" also arranged by Paulsson. Judith Cloud's "Feet of Jesus" is, from warm saxophone introduction to dramatic close, an elegant addition to American spiritual music. Cloud sets the Langston Hughes poem perfectly. Her spirited "Shout" and "Fire" complement a loving "Gather up in the arms of your pity the sick, the depraved, the desperate, the tired...." reaching the innermost recesses of the spirit and pulling from it something redeeming of humankind. The recording techniques are first-rate. To those who expect not only professional technique, but also heartfelt music, put this CD in your player and you'll never take it out!

The Homeless Wonders, a three peice from podunk, Wyoming have officially blown me away. The band used to be a decent ska-punk band who managed to get on several comps (ska sucks, dillinquents) but were nothing to rave about. Then they got rid of the horns and something magical happened. If you want a good taste, download Death by Sex. Or even better download the incredible insturmental Wimpy, where the band switches insturments DURING THE SONG. If you like the style of Avail and Hot Water Music you will like the Homeless Wonders. If you like the amazing technicallity of AFI, then you will like the Homeless Wonders. If you like music, then you will like the Homeless Wonders.
