5 out of 5 stars Mrs Henderson Presents.......2007-05-16

A very enjoyable and at times funny movie. Judi Dench gives one of her best perfomances with excellent support from the other cast members. This is a movie one could watch several times and never tire of it. AAA+++

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely infectious!!!.......2007-03-28

From start to finish, MRS. HENDERSON PRESENTS is the finest collection of solid standards and George Fenton's own recreated time-period evocations, fully fleshed and skillfully performed and recorded. The talents of singer Will Young will not go unnoticed, especially in his heartbreaking rendition of ALL THE THINGS YOU ARE.Your toes will be tapping, your lips will be smiling and you will be glad that this soundtrack and wonderful film are yours! You will be transported to WW2 England and you will be humming these tunes day and night.

5 out of 5 stars A Creation and Recreation of Nostalgia.......2006-04-23

George Fenton has put together a musical score for the completely delightful MRS. HENDERSON PRESENTS that is a combination of original music deeply influenced by the time of the film (London during WW II) and some of the best 'old favorite songs' from that time. In the film the music is always present, whether in the performances on the Windmill Theater stage or in the lyricism of the acting by Judi Dench, Bob Hoskins and crew.

Fenton includes such terrific oldies as Johnny Mercer's 'Goody Goody', Charles Harris' 'After the Ball', Noel Gay's 'Letting in the Sunshine', Frank Loesser's 'Blue Nightfall', and Jerome Kern's 'All the things you are'. He segues these pieces with his own fine orchestrations and the result is a score that not only enhances the mood of the film, but one that stands alone as a recording. The various performers include Camille O'Sullivan, Charlene Ford, Ciaran Connolly, Elise Audeyev, Frances Garvey, Frank Lawson, Joseph McMurray, Kate Power, Matthew Hart, Melody Squire, Rachel Lawrence, Sir Thomas Allen!, Sophie Brown, The O'Brien Sisters, Vanessa Barmby, Vicki Davids, and Victoria Hay.

This is a recording to conjure up memories not only of a successful film but also of a time when music conveyed a lot of emotion during times of stress. Highly recommended. Grady Harp, April 06

5 out of 5 stars Mrs. Henderson Presents.......2006-03-24

Met ALL my expectations, having seen/loved the film - especially the orchestration, arrangements, and vocals. Sound quality superb.
I've played this CD for others - of all age groups - all agree it's a defininte winner.

4 out of 5 stars Upbeat and Fun!.......2006-03-22

Love this CD for the nostalgia! My favorite track is "All the Things You Are" by J.Kern and O.Hammerstein. This year's Oscar telecast produced a montage of film clips to this track including the last scene from "Mrs. Henderson Presents" and it was so emotion granting as is the song. Many of the other songs are from a time period right before WWII, but they are just fun and upbeat -- it was the depression, people needed to be uplifted with such such songs as "Letting in the Sunshine" and "Goody Goody." Judi Dench was asked by someone in the bleachers at the Oscars how it felt to be nominated this year for Mrs. Henderson, and she answered back, "just listen to the soundtrack darling!" How great is that???!!!!

The fifth album from this revered Norwegian black metal act which features the talents of Galder and Nicholas Barker of Dimmu Borgir. 9 tracks. Century Media. 2003.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars It doesn't get much better than this.......2006-12-06

In 2003, three years after Old Man's Child's last album and two years after Dimmu Borgir's latest, Galder returned with two new discs (the sixth C.D. from his side project, OMC's "In Defiance Of Existence," and Dimmu Borgir's "Death Cult Armageddon"). As on other Old Man's Child releases, Galder handled nearly every instrument on this album: second guitar, vocals, bass guitar, and synthesizers. But he is, unexpectedly, not the only one on here who really gets to show off his talents: Dimmu Borgir/Cradle Of Filth/Benediction alumni Nicholas Barker (who had been hired to pound the skins on this album), goes completely nuts, beating the stuffing out of his trapkit, and driving most of these rhythms with remarkable, fast, thumping blast beats.

Like all great melodic black metal, "In Defiance Of Existence" has several pretty, tranquil parts, but it's first and foremost brutal. The heavy parts feature Galder spewing his venomous, kind of snarly vocals over cold, opaque soundscapes of fiery guitars and ultra fast double kick drumming.

But this album also has a lot of great, very refined texture and variety because several of these songs subtly slip in a touch of moody keyboards and/or acoustic guitars. And OMC aren't like some dark metal bands who either make a song completely melodic or completely heavy (with no middle ground), because many of these tracks, like "Agony Of Fallen Grace" (which has a walloping, machine gun rhythm but also includes some spacey synths), are brutal and ambient at the same time.

The record's best song might be "Black Seeds On Virgin Soil." After a melodic intro, a surging, whiplash onslaught made up of a hurricane of guitar riffs and extremely busy double bass work bursts onto the scene. Similarly, "The Soul Receiver" begins with the sounds of a symphony, but then catapults into a heavily churning, pummeling rhythm. Track seven, "In Quest Of Enigmatic Dreams," is an interlude consisting of a very pretty string arrangement, but the album goes out with a bang: "The Underworld Domains" and "Life Deprived" are both scorchers, bursting with thrashy, scalding riffs and ultra-fast, skull-cracking blast beats.

It's a shame that Dimmu's "Death Cult Armageddon" and "In Defiance Of Existence" came out the same year because when someone releases an album from both of his projects, the side project will probably always be overshadowed by the main one. Thus this disc is sometimes overlooked due to DB's bigger, wider selling, and all around better release. But, regardless, OMC is as good as any melodic/symphonic black metal group on the market today, and "IDOE" is easily one of the genre's finest releases of the past several years.

5 out of 5 stars Absolute Brilliance.......2006-06-24

In Defiance of Existence is truly a landmark black metal album. As a black metal fan of over ten years now, it is an album that absolutely stands out as one of the best I have ever heard. Galder is an absolute genius and the addition of Nicholas Barker on drums completes the potential of an concept that is completely realized if not surpassed. Every song is amazing. It does not get any better. I have always marveled at how Galder nearly alone can outdo the whole of Dimmu Borgir but that is just what he does. This album is the best that OMC has ever done and is completely amazing. An absolute triumph and an essential part of any black metal fan's collection.

5 out of 5 stars maybe their best.......2006-04-08

This is one awsome cd. It might end up being my favorite OMC cd. Only time will tell if thats the case. Either way Galder delivers again. Nick barker ex Dimmu,ex Cradle is the new drummer and does a great job blasting the skins for OMC.
Felonies Of The Christian Art- 8.4 Fantastic opening song. Its a typical OMC song done well. I particularly enjoy the swirling soloing between 3:14 and 3:40. Although the rest of the song is just as good.
Agony Of Fallen Grace-10+ It gets a 10+ because it might be my favorite OMC song ever. Although it does have much competition. The guitar section between 1:20 and 1:37 is especially noteworthy. It encompasses such emotion and sorrow yet beauty and grace as well. Thank god it shows up again toward the end of the song although it could have probably been made into an entire song itself. Also the drums of Nick Barker bring this song to life with a fury I havent felt in earlier OMC cds.
Black Seeds On Virgin Soil-8.2 Not as good as the previous two but hardly a letdown. OMC just dont have any filler songs. Everything has its own place on the cd. This starts out with some acoustic guitar but than bust loose into black metal intensity. Good variety of guitar in this song.
In Defiance Of Existence- 8.7 It opens with guitars and drums that evoke images of splashing waves on rocky norwegian fjords. Than Nick kicks a$$ with some double bass. Overall many fine riffs, melodies and blastbeats.
Sacrifice Of Vengeance- 9 Dont let the tranquill accoustic opening fool you. This is OMc not John Denver. 20 seconds in the riffs begin with a vengence. Nicks Drums are so good you can almost feel his sticks stinging your flesh. Thats a small sacrifice to pay to have the hellish pleasure of hearing this viking vengence. At 3:27 to 3:50 there is a magnificant seering, squawking sounding solo that blows my mind away.
The Soul Receiver 10 Awsome. Reminds me of old Dimmu. This experiance is all about the melody and the melody is good. This is a fitting anthem to the raping, pilaging reapers that once were the terrors of northern europe. Hail the vikings!
In Quest Of Enigmatic Dreams-7.5 Even the vikings needed some tranquility I guess. Pretty acoustic interlude.
The Underworld Domains-9 If in quest of enigmatic dreams was tranquil than this is a nightmare. Maybe the hardest song here or maybe not. Either way this is the underworld so what do you expect.
Life Deprived-9.5 The drums are so cool on this one combined with the buzzsaw riffs and some well placed solos. I get this mechanical impression with this one. Very hard song. A violent end yes, but what do you expect with a title like In defiance of Existance.

5 out of 5 stars now this album rocks!!.......2006-03-06

muuuch better than Vermin...alot better... thats all i have to say on that subject. there was so much intensity and originality in this album you wouldnt have thought that galder was in Dimmu...unlike Vermin... barker is a great drummer yes, but stands nowhere neer the god himself...Hellhammer... i recommend this album to any melodic bm fan as well as any metal fan in general

5 out of 5 stars KICK ASS.......2005-08-18

    Album Description

In this first ever survey of the music of this war torn region, Michael Church lifts the veil on a vibrant musical tradition. The small but troubled Republic of Chechnya is a member of the Russian Federation, located in the North Caucasus Mountains between the Black and Caspian Seas. With a population of a little more that one million, its fierce fight for independence has kept it in the news and kept visitors out. A beautiful but harsh mountainous landscape has made for a traditionally hard and resilient people whose culture has rarely reached the outside world.

Michael Church has recorded and compiled the stunning music on this disc partly in Chechnya itself and was held by the Russian police for his efforts. Some of the tracks are love songs and circle dances, others are living history, accompanied by balalaika, violin, drum and accordion, these songs celebrate heroes and denounce genocidal crime.

"Just when you think you have a grasp on indigenous European music, along comes something that blows away all your preconceptions. This music seems to come from some mysterious other place, with its rough-hewn energy and its passionate social engagement. Much of the material - text as well as music - is profoundly moving and very beautiful. Michael Church does us a great service by bringing it to our attention"

    Customer Reviews:

...but i still can NOT stop listening to this album...it's so damn good...that should tell you everything you need to know about it.

    5 out of 5 stars Amazing Hardcore.......2004-06-26

If I ever have a heart attack, it will likely be while listening to this album. This is what you get when you mix a hardcore punk band with modern metal production--extremely intense, heavy, angry hardcore. Having received a little help from members of Sepultura, Fear Factory and the Deftones, this album will appeal to the thrash and punk crowds alike.

Strife's live performances following this release were just as amazing as the album. Their show in Denver was one of the best hardcore concerts I have seen or heard (and I've been to hundreds). I was amazed to see that the band was a bunch of lanky jockish kids. They reproduced the intensity found on this album perfectly while throwing their guitars around like Spinal Tap and with the singer often crouched down, pounding his fists on the stage while barking into the microphone.

As can be expected with the best albums, the follow-up, "Angermeans," is terrible. Strife gave it their all for this one. A must for any hardcore and thrash collection.

    5 out of 5 stars Fast Hardcore!.......2002-08-08

No slowing down here, its all power fast HARDCORE!!
    Tight instrumentation, and attitude.
    STRIFE is fast and powerful!!

    4 out of 5 stars a great album, but..........2000-02-17

the songs are good and powerful but the energy of the record is diminished by that awful intro and outtro, and the sounds between songs.

    5 out of 5 stars great stuff.......2000-01-09

This is the greatest hardcore CD i have. It's just as good as minor threat. In this Defiance is way better than their first CD. This CD is a lot more agressive and harder. Great sXe music. Songs like, waiting, force of change, will to die, blistered are just great. I could live without the intro and outro though. It doesn't matter. everything between that is great. A must have CD for anyone

3 out of 5 stars Good but not great........2007-06-13

I love A23, but IMO, this is not the best A23 album in circulation. To be honest it's one of his least imaginative albums yet. There are some good soongs on the album that would please any fan of future pop music, sadley this just isn't up to par with the classic A23 album 'Failure', or his 2007 masterpeice 'Meta'. If your new to A23, i strongly suggest that you start with one of those albums instead.

4 out of 5 stars Defiance: A quality driven work of listening pleasure.......2006-11-29

Tom Shear produces another captivating and marvelous performance in lyrics, vocals and music compilation in 'Defiance'. This is the first album after a heart-wrenching, emotional 'Failure'. Tom decided to create a more happier, vibrant sound and style and it shows through in this release. I enjoyed the first 6 songs very much, they were vintage synth based Assemblage 23 that I have come to know and appreciate.

'Opened' and 'Drive' are compelling openers for this album and have some great lyrics. 'Cocoon' is a lower darker sounding song that is also about hope in times gone bad. 'Fallen Down' is about mental disorders and how they effect the individual. For me the weakest part of the album were 'Light', 'Horizon' and 'Maps of Reality' that to me just didn't feel right for this album. The album ended with 'Lullaby' which was a soft song of strong lyrical defiance. It is one of the best songs ever sung by Tom Shear.

As a continuing fan of Tom Shear, I am amazed by his talent and conviction. His music is deep and reflective. This is a must buy for any Assemblage 23 fan and add this to your collection. It is a quality driven gem.

    4 out of 5 stars You Can't Defy Defiance.......2006-09-04

Once again A23 hits the mark with a tight grouping of shots fired from this album. From the insomnia-driven "Drive" to the mournful, tear-inducing "Lullaby", "Defiant" has something to suit just about every need and every mood.

As usual, Tom Shear's "Defiance" is loaded with dance-inducing rhythms, and synthesized, ethereal twists and turns. This album is the epitomy of honesty without pretense.

After having so many of his CDs, I don't think a day goes by without listening to his music. In fact, I can't imagine a day without at least one.

This CD is worth the purchase, if only for the song "Lullaby".

5 out of 5 stars Red, smoldering, healing, emotional EBM.......2005-01-10

The previous album, Failure, was a devastatingly powerful pit of harsh but beautiful angst. The following album, Storm, was a cool, uplifting piece of synthpop mastery. This album is the link between the two- and a wonderful link it is.

This is probably the slowest A23 album, and it doesn't just dive in. It slowly slips into deep lyrics, smooth hooks, and powerful beats. In fact, the slower nature of some of these songs provides a throbbing resonance of emotion. But if you like powerful EBM beats, don't worry- there are plenty of muscle car tracks on here as well. Check out "Drive."

I get the impression that this album is viewed as being one of Tom Shear's weaker ones, but i think it is an essential piece of evolution. Tom Shear's voice has seemed to expand to an even greater melodic range on here, with wonderful results. It further feeds the fire under this album, and this CD smokes.

The final track, "Lullaby", could be the most beautiful piece of electronic music that i have ever heard. Didn't think an EBM "Ballad" was possible? Listen to this song. It is a breathtaking end to a wonderful album.

    5 out of 5 stars Amazing.......2004-08-15

Tom shear is a Genious. Everytime i see that all the music, lyrics, mixing, and producing are all done by this one guy it amazes me. He paints pictures with words which are brought to life by the mesmorizing music and it all comes together into one memorable masterpiece. I love his song structures/progressions and I really like his lyrics, they really impact me/cause me to reflect. This cd has a more elevated and positive mood than failure and its still just as good in my opinion. Each song takes me into another world, and at some points i can only describe how i feel listening as a spiritual experience. Each track is distinctly memorable and i lose myself in each one. I'm jus getting into the industial scene and im really liking assemblage 23.

5 out of 5 stars Strung Out's best album to date!.......2007-03-13

Well i've been a huge Strung Out fan for the past 8 years or so and I still can't put this album down. After Twisted by Design came out most people thought they woudln't be able to top that, but they were wrong. Even though there are some negative reviews on this album, don't be fooled by them. Most of those people complain that they are trying to be too metal or something of that sort. They don't understand that a band can't come out with the same album over and over again, they have to progress as musicians.

Not only is this their best work, but also their best album production. Everything sounds so perfect from Jason's voice, to Rob and Jake's guitar work, to Chris' bass work, to Jordan's insanely wicked drumming. The drumming on all of the other albums just doesn't compare to this one. Here is how i break down the album. Each song flows well into the next one.

    1. Mission to Mars: 9/10 Probably my least favorite track on the album, but it starts out fast and ends fast and is a great opener.

    2. Scarecrow: 10/10 One of the top 3 songs on the album. Has great lyrics, guitar solo, and drumming.

    3. Savant: 9/10 The songs starts off a little slow and then gets into it. A great song to hear them play live.

    4. Blew: 10/10 Most people dismiss this song because it is the slowest on the album. Just because they slow it down a little doesn't mean it's bad.

    5. Everyday: 10/10 Although this song is rather short, it is clearly the best on the album and perhaps their best song period. It is fast and has their best guitar solo in it.

    6. Razorblade: 10/10 The other top 3 song from the album. Jordan did some amazing drumming in this song. It is just incredible and the lyrics are top notch in this one.

    7. Jackie-O: 9/10 Like others have said, this is a remake of an older song they did. A little more on the poppy side but still an excellent tune.

    8. Mephisto: 10/10 A great closer song. Ends the album perfectly.

So if you don't have this album yet, get it now!! And if you get a chance, go check out their live show, you will not be disapointed.

5 out of 5 stars Great music, worth the money.......2006-05-11

Great album! They get better every time I hear them! I like their newer albums a bit more, but all the same this one is deffinatly worth the money!

    5 out of 5 stars DIfferent.......2006-05-10

Well since everyone just likes ratings let me shut up and just break this down for you.

Mission To Mars(9/10)- great opener. strong, fast, energetic.

Scarecrow(10/10) - one of the best on the album. wow I love this drummer

Savant(9/10) - when i saw these guys play this song live I nearly flipped out, awesome song.

Blew(8/10) - alright im givin this an 8 becuase i know alot of people like the fast upbeat strung out but this one is actually one of my favorite strung out songs.

    Everyday(10/10) - best strung out song...ever

Razorblade(9/10) - good song..i didnt realize it was bassicaly jus 3 chords till i was 17. but still really good. how the hell do they do it?

Jackie-O(10/10) - simply, amazing. great guitar work.

Mephisto(10/10) - great closer. second best on album

well as u can see I am saying this is their best because it is. Its different, and doesnt sound like any other strung out album ive heard. jordan burns. ure the greatest.peace

4 out of 5 stars Not The Best But Not Bad.......2006-04-14

The Element of Sonic Defiance has the makings to be great and shows the sound that strung out went on to perfect. Unfortunately this is not as good as previous work or later work. It is very experimental and on some of the songs such as Scarecrow, Razorblade & Mephisto their test worked perfectly but on songs like Mission to Mars it didnt. Mission to Mars has the musical capabilities to be a great song and is very upbeat but the words and rhymes ruin it.The other complaint is the album gets kind of boring on songs like Blew which makes it hard to listen to from beginning to end even though there are only 8 songs. I would still recommend this over other bands because strung out is always great but just get suburban, twisted by design & exile at least before this.

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2005-02-17

I don't understand how so many reviews for this album are so bad. On this album, Strung Out blends about three different genres on eight tracks, and it's done very well I might add. The emotions shift from song to song and it flows together nicely. This album proves that not only can Strung Out pull off the punk/metal/hardcore fusion, but they're good at it. Don't let all the negative reviews keep you from this cd. Check it out before you buy it, but I can't see why anyone who likes Strung Out wouldn't like this one.

    Product Description

D,OH play fun, politically conscious, stripped-down punk with acoustic guitars, violin, cello, banjo, upright bass... well, you get the picture! They have cruised very DIY throughout their existence, self-releasing their first CD, and touring the USA many times (and Europe as well). They have also worked with a lot of friends' labels with split releases, including a split CD with GHOST MICE on Plan-It-X and a split 7" with ONE REASON on Anti-Creative. We are really excited about this record!!

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars my new favorite cd.......2006-07-02

If you like Against Me!, but prefer to hear it from DIY punks who still play shows in peoples' garages, you're in for a treat!

First of all, the way they utilize the cello, violin, upright bass, banjo, and harmonica to make punk songs is stunning. Some songs are fast with singalong parts, and others are well-executed folk. What I love about this album, in relation to the older stuff, is the abundance of unaccompanied female vocals;and her voice is incredible, really giving the CD overall more flavor. It does still resemble their past efforts when it comes to the passionate message, and, in addition, they even have a really rad song about skateboarding! I guarantee you will not get bored for one moment because these catchy songs will make you move.

If you haven't heard Defiance, Ohio before, this album would be a great place to start since these songs are musically more well-written, although I do recommend "Share What Ya Got" and their splits. I might add that this CD can be purchased from No Idea Records for $6, and the latter mentioned full-lenghth can be found for $5 on Defiance, OH's official site--this way you can support the BAND.

Folky punk in the vein of early Against Me! but with violin and banjo. Very nice male/female vocals. Buy all their stuffs from No Idea Records. This band will get tons of recognition very soon.

After being around for a decade, you'd think the rest of the music community would've caught on to Piebald - oddly enough, they still haven't. Piebald's unique brand of tongue-in-cheek lyrics (and song titles), catchy hooks, and Travis' easily recognized singing shine through on this, their third full-length release.

Standout tracks are numerous, as almost every song on the CD might end up being your favorite. The exception may be "It's Going To Get Worse Before It Gets Better," - the tempo slows to a drag, and the song just doesn't fit well with the rest of the album. No matter, the rest more than make up for it. Favorites of mine include: "Fear And Loathing On Cape Cod," "Karate Chops For Everyone But Us," and "The Stalker". Accompanying videos were made for Just A Simple Plan and American Hearts, and are definitely worth a look.

Hailing from Massachusetts, Piebald will be touring with Say Anything and MewithoutYou this fall, via their vegetable-grease-fueled tour van. I wouldn't recommend missing them.

1 out of 5 stars Not my Cup of Tea.......2004-12-17

If you like this band get ready to hit the not helpful button since my personal views automatically mean I am wrong. Though I realize this band is held in very high regard by many people, I cannot say the same. This of course is do only to peronal preference and taste.

Piebald does not particularly engage me positively. I'm not sure which strikes me first, the rather whiny vocals or, in my opinion, the vain attempt of deep and political lyrics. "Well have you heard that this country is unequal still.History continues itself, continues itself."* These words, which I believe are meant to be a profound statement of the social and political corruption of modern America, come off as rather overweening. There is nothing impressive about the musicianship, though it is not bad, which may help to rectify this band. If you are a fan of The Smiths, which I am not, then you may rather enjoy this band. It has, atleast to me, a stereotypical EMO sound. As I said before this is a matter of personal taste. I will not deny the influence this band has, but that does not mean I must like them.

It is apparent that someone in here has no idea that personal tastes are just that, personal tastes. Just because I would like one band does not mean I would like another, hence I like Pinback yet I do not enjoy the Smiths or even most of Rob Crows other work . . . astonishing. Emo is and has always been a more emotional sounding softer punk, so yes I would define emo as "emotional," not to mention emotional being the origin of the word. Furthermore Piebald was considered, and still is, one of the top Emo bands. To say that it has a stereotypical Emo sound is wrong is like saying that does not have a Alice in Chains does not have a Alice a stereotypical grundge sound, whether they are going for it or not they still sound like an Emo band . . . get over it. Furthermore for someone who "rarely" gives 5 star ratings you have given quite a few bands five star ratings. If you disagree with my personal taste say so don't try to "bash" me with a petty argument in which you look like a fool.

*If these lyrics don't sound like a petty political statement then something is wrong with you.

What can I say? except WOOT WOOT this album is greatness. Piebald is one of the best and most underrated bands ever. they totally own the Beatles. yes i just said that. It takes a few listens to fully appreciate this album, but when you listen to it closely you'll realize its genious. These songs will amaiz you and move you whether they're about a broken down bus, or a stalker, or symbolic monkeys and robots. It's hard to put them in a musical genre or label, and I dont think they want to be in one. Theyre too good for a genre, and if they were in a genre theyd be found under "AWESOMENESS". Their lyrics are smart-alecky and DEEp at the same time. There isnt a band out there that's as funny and effortlessly awesome as Piebald. you'll listen to it for "Long Nights" to come. that was lame but oh well. if you dont like piebald i will come and fight you.

go buy their other albums too. if you do, I'll take my pills.

5 out of 5 stars "We've got the best job ever...".......2002-04-26

This CD was my first exposure to Piebald, even though they've been around for a while. I don't really know what kind of a label to give Piebald, they seem to be a big mixture to me. Either way, these guys are great. I bought this because it was on sale at my local independent record store and because I'd read some good reviews and heard good things. Upon a few listens, I couldn't really get into it, so I put it up and kinda forgot about it. A few weeks later, I came across it again, and something just clicked. The songs became instantly cathcy. The lead singer suddenly had a great voice (which he does, I love it), and everything just stuck in my head. I walked around singing the entire album. The lyrics are well written, in a very quirky, tounge in cheek kind of way. There is just enough of a serious tone to keep the lyrics from being out right funny/stupid. It's got a underlying not very serious feel to it. Which I enjoy greatly. It's nice to hear an album that's just about various stuff, and not your normal "fight the power, this and that [is bad], my life [is so bad] so feel sorry for me" release. All the instruments are played very well, with great skill. Everything sounds great, and all the insruments are arranged very well. Every piano and acoustic guitar fit perfectly with the rock almost kinda punk that Piebald play. It all works to a great effect. This is a very well played, well thought out, well written album. It's deffinatly sparked my intrest in this band, and I'm looking foward to checking out their previous material. All together, "We Are the Only Friends We Have" could be considered pop (I guess), and it could be called punk (kinda), but no matter what you call it, it's a great release and should be checked out by all.

4 out of 5 stars Very good reading, but not the best, of really lovely music.......2004-02-16

As a long-time fan of Janacek, I know this recording from LP. It is quite well played, and is one of the only recordings out there of Janacek's wonderful and generally neglected piano works. My only problem with it is that I also have a recording of some of this music (also on LP, and not available on CD, alas) by Ivan Moravec. Like many of Moravec's recordings, that one ruined anyone else's interpretation for me - it is delicate, nuanced and in places capable of moving one to tears. Firkusny's playing is more straightforward, maybe a trifle colder, but the quality of the music still comes across.

3 out of 5 stars Wonderful music, but I'm not sure I like the interpretation.......2003-01-18

Janacek is one of my favorite composers; I am currently learning "On the Overgrown Path" on the piano. I bought this CD based on the glowing reviews on this site.
I myself don't much care for Firkusny's style. I am only a student. More importantly, I think, I am an American; perhaps I'm too ignorant of Czech style to appreciate the interpretation. That said, I want more clarity. I want the rubato to be more overt. I love the music, but I want it to be more overwhelming---I really like the Guarneri Quartet's interpretation of the string quartets.
I'd be interested in hearing Schiff's interpretation of this music; I'm not sure I'd recommend Firkusny unless you are a scholar or a true devotee of Czech style.

    5 out of 5 stars Absolutely breath-taking.......2000-06-20

This is, simply put, one of the best CD sets out there. Janacek truly had a gift for writing piano music, and, equally so, Firkunsky had a gift for interpreting them. Every piece on these discs is a gem, from the peaceful "On the Overgrown Path" to, my personal favorite, the intense and mature "Capriccio", these CDs have no weak points. If you are at all a fan of Moravia's greatest composer, or if you are looking for an introduction to his works, this is a can't miss.

5 out of 5 stars Firkusny redraws a misguided portrait........1999-01-15

These are the first Janacek CDs I have purchased. Previously I heard some of the operas and had been only mildly interested in the great Czech. From those earlier experiences I had drawn a certain image of Janacek that these CDs have forced me to reimagine. "On The Overgrown Path" is performed with such simple warmth that it is overwhelming. "Reminiscence", according to the CD jacket, was Janacek's final work. It is an historic half a minute. The two movement sonata - the last movement to which Janacek apparently tore to pieces and hurled into a river - is a wonderful blend of Czech morbidity and intermittent promise. This is an awesome release that any pianophile absolutely must own. I would have given it ten stars if I could.

this cd is absolutely awsome. its a combination of electronicawith african beat and that beat is sick. it has this incredible soundto it that i have never heard on any other cd before, and i am an african freak in terms of music. this cd is awsome, id give it ten stars if i could. really good [stuff]. and if i could threaten your life on the internet, i would say buy it or else. you will be pleased.

    5 out of 5 stars groove science.......1999-04-02

I'm sick of cheap and easy push button computer groove science perpetraited by much of the dj dance producers operating today.

its nice to hear a cd like this where the grooves are natural. furthermore you can tell that the producers and players are not faking the funk -- they feel the funk. the best funk is made by funk musicians, not programmer dweebs.

this cd is not perfect... some of the dub keyboard sounds are cheesey. and its not quite aggressive enough for my taste.

but i would rather listen to this cd than any off-the-shelf in-bred euro-electronic re-hash "style"
