5 out of 5 stars If you don't know the Jarman brothers, you're missing out..........2006-04-30

I had never heard of the Cribs until about 2 months ago or so, when I heard that they were touring with Franz Ferdinand. I of course went to the show, and realized what I had been missing!

The Crib's music isn't anything new, or out-of-the box, or something you've never heard before- it's just simply good. Exciting, fun guitar-pop songs mixed in with all the goodness that punk and garage bands have to offer. Their lyrics are blunt (the chant- "You know it's not right but it's something you like!"), fresh ("But now you think you're right/with your reluctance to accept us/but I know that will change/when it's cool to be an outsider") and often-times funny ("I've got problems with chances/like groupies with cameras"). They make fun of the "cool" indie kids on songs like "Hey Scenesters!" and "I'm Alright, Me" and it makes for fun, catchy tunes that make you hate the in-crowd too. It's not like this is the band that will change your life, but they will make it a lot more fun music-wise.

I would definitely recommend seeing them live- they epitomise the rock star lifestlye with their tight jeans, drum- hopping, and on-stage smoking- it makes for an entertaining evening. Also, I would check out their first album although this one is better.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant guitar pop gleaming with Edwyn Collins' production........2005-11-24

The Cribs have obvious influences from the Strokes and Libertines school of rock. On this CD they are produced by Edwyn Collins and it shows beautifully. Collins revolutionized indie pop in the '80's with Orange Juice and has been a major catalyst with everything he has since touched. (Unfortunately, this may be one the the last albums Collins produced before his recent brain haemorrhage.) The album opens with a cracking classic, "Hey Scensters!," and maintains a steady rhythm of rocking songs and sing-along lyrics. Once I opened the CD months ago I have listened almost daily. If you like The Strokes, Libertines, Orange Juice, Aztec Camera, give this a chance. If you like this and have not experienced Edwyn Collins' other work, I highly commend it and a historical drill-down to the recent Orange Juice compilation "The Glasgow School."

4 out of 5 stars The Strokes The Strokes The Strokes The Strokes The Strokes .......2005-04-04

THE STROKES? Good. Have to keep that up. Promise you'll never read a review of this band without hearing the S word. Up tempo garage rock that doesn't suck? "Check". Deep gravelly voiced singer? "Check". British lineage? "Che-wait, are The Strokes-I mean, I thought they were-oh! Good one!"
Check 1- The most surprising thing about this band is that they don't sound pitiful and helpless, like most imitators are want to do. Completely unpolished, completely angular, and completely innocent makes the Jarman's jolly lads. The three brothers that comprise The Cribs will unfortunately be met at every turn with sneers and smirks from those members of the music community who, upon realizing the vast extent of their intellectual superiority to all others, will "knowingly" remark to their buddies, "Hey" (dramatic pause while waiting for attention) "I liked them better when they were called... The Strokes!" (followed by overly emphatic knee slap, followed by self congratulatory laughter at ability to turn intellectual superiority into highly comical, socially relevant joke)." The fact that these same people said the same thing about The Hives, The Vines, The Libertines, Phantom Planet, Interpol, Franz Ferdinand, and the Velvet Underground (not realizing the irony of such statements) makes them fun to be around.
Check 2- Yea, the one singer, Ryan, sounds like a much deeper voiced version of good old Julian, and the guitars too sometimes, and-oh drat! There I go again. Who am I reviewing anyways, The Strokes or this other band? Why don't I just start a new checklist, which might come in handy for all future reviews-Reasons Why (insert band name here) Don't Sound Like The Strokes. Ok, for one, they sometimes do this thing where a couple of them sing at the same time, which is really neat. Then, this other time, they have this circus organ thing that jumps in and out of the song. And, overall, they tend to make the Strokes' "lo-fi" sound downright polished. Also, they really are from England, which is where we all know The Strokes whish they were from (pesky birth certificates!).
So, at least we know that The Stro-I mean, The Cribs are good enough to form their own band based upon a unique band identity without having to worry about any extraneously annoying comparisons to other bands. I mean wouldn't it be crazy if you had to, hypothetically, follow the lineage of "sounds like" back to the dawn of time? We would just end up comparing every band to the noises of the Big Bang during the formation of the universe! Good thing we don't do that, then.

      5 out of 5 stars Ragged Glory.......2007-07-12

The Cribs have created a small masterpiece of spiky guitar pop. Somewhere between Nirvana, the Libertines, and most importantly, the La's. An album that rewards repeated listens although Alex Kapranos' production is straight forward relying on the bands ability to tightly shine. Tracks like "Girls Like Mystery", "Moving Pictures", "Men's Needs", "Our Bovine Public", and most deliciously "I've Tried Everything" grow upon familiarity because of the emotion and chops the band bring to the table and Alex gives them the space to demonstrate these formidable talents. A gem to cherish.

5 out of 5 stars Great guitar pop.......2005-10-20

This is wonderful record, filled with catchy songs and great guitar figures. It's obvious that the Cribs and the Strokes have the same influences. But instead of New York attitude, the Cribs have a fresh and (almost) innocent take on life. The production is very simple -- I'll bet their live shows sound just like the record.

              4 out of 5 stars !.......2005-10-05

I loved this album. Theese hip indy rockers have alot of potential. although i think that theese guys are kind of a strokes/libertines knock off.

5 out of 5 stars good live, good on cd .......2005-07-25

well i'll keep this short and simple. I had never even heard of these guys before i saw them open for the kaiser chiefs a few days ago. they are an opening band that i would certainly go and see if they ever tour by themselves. many of their songs are addictively catchy, some of them are thoughtful, and all of them are super high energy. good job to england for producing another quality band.

The Cribs are one of the best bands around at the moment , the three brothers have been credited as inspiration by bands such as The Kaiser Chiefs. Buy this CD , you will not regret it
