WILD WEST will probably shake the Southern rock scene, not only in France but also in the whole world ! In the footpath of LYNYRD SKYNYRD, BLACKFOOT and MOLLY HATCHET, this quintet shows a talent and professional attitude worthy of the best Anglo-Saxon productions. In another style, WHITE LION seems to be one of their major influences. After a first album made of thirteen personal compositions ("One", 1998), this line-up comes back quite strongly with "Second To None" (2003). A little less specialised than its predecessor, this second wonderfully produced album directly competes with the best groups of the genre. The style is at the same time heavier and more conceptual but doesn't deny its Southern rock roots. The compositions are at the same time more heavy-metal oriented as well as more rock, in the Seventies and Eighties tradition. We can particularly mention Rudy ROBERTS' performance on one track, who gets in a musical guitar fight with Erik DOMINECH. Here are five wild wolves set free, and ready to tell you once again the story of the Wild West !

Both the music and this actual product are masterpieces. John Dowland's collected works here - covering 12 compact discs - exhibit the depth and power of this composer, a composer who many now regard as suffering from clinical depression. I doubt that the issue of the diagnosis of Dowland's depression can ever be settled, however, it is certainly obvious from his music, so completely on display here, that he was a man with very dark depths and corners in his mind. Dowland's various manifestations and "takes" on his own tune, "Flow my tears"/"Lachrimae" are here. This tune has haunted me ever since I first heard it when I was a child. It seems to sum up Dowland's feelings - at least Dowland seems to have thought so.

The First, Second, Third and Fourth Bookes of Songes, A Musicall Banquet, the keyboard transcriptions, all the lute music, consort music are here and virtually everything else written or supposedly written by John Dowland. Anthony Rooley and The Consort of Musicke perform this music with style and feeling throughout. This 12 CD set is something of a monument to the ensemble - I only wish they'd finished their collection of Monteverdi madrigals, which was equally good (La Venexiana are currently doing a magnificent job of recording all Monteverdi's books of madrigals for the GLOSSA label).

This is an expensive set, however, you will probably never need to buy another John Dowland CD again after buying and listening to this collection.

I bought this CD set on a mild Summer evening of 1998 and listened to it while sitting in my sun room - which a glorious orange sunset in progress, and a glass of wine. It brought back so many memories.

I'm amazed at how many people tend to associate John Dowland's music with a tragic sense of drama. While no doubt this is art highly based on sadness, the "tragic" sense of it is more a legacy from the Romantic period. During the Renaissance, however, sadness was undestood as a very aesthetic way of approaching life. That is also the reason why Shakespeare's tragedies appear more sophisticated than his comedies.

Dowland, a contemporary of Shakespeare, discovered that meditating on a sad theme is, at the same time, a way of discovering a special beauty that we tend to avoid (maybe because of the "tragic" heritage of the Romantics). So, in the end, meditating on sadness is an uplifting experience! This box set is a journey into melancholy that includes songs, chamber music, pieces for lute, some rare sacred music and -as a highlight- Dowland's beautiful collection of seven pieces for viola which he called "Lachrimae" (Tears).

John Dowland is valued today as the first English composer of solo songs, mostly because no one in England has exceeded his output; he may have been equalled by Purcell. However, his distinctive blend of poem, melody and harmony remains unsurpassed. In addition, by underplaying the role of the voice, the listener's attention is directed to the poem. This de-emphasis of the voice was favoured by Elizabethans who relished the new-minted language of Shakepeare's contemporaries. Dowland has his brighter side, but his music is preponderantly melancholy. "Lachrimae" became his signature tune. The accompanying group 'The Consort of Six' was a peculiarly English invention of the 1580's. Six different instruments-treble and bass viols, flute, lute, cittern and bandora; it was in fact the first orchestra. The titles of the instrumental pieces give us some idea of the wide range of society in which Dowland moved; very "upper class". John Dowland was typical of composers of that time in that he earned his living by playing, and he was very much sought after by both amateurs and professionals. Alfred Deller, the most legendary of countertenors issued the very essence of melancholy of the 17th century English songs. One has to mention that he was a primary influence in the development of the countertenor voice and as such was a performer who traveled all over the world showing to all that this voice was to be looked upon and accepted as an authentic and singular entity in itself, to which I totally agree. Therefore, he paved the way for an entire generation of singers such as James Bowman, Michael Chance, David Daniels, Gerard Lesne and Phillipe Jarousky to name only a few. This recording is a landmark in music; the singing is skilled; the accompaniment superb and the song selection significant.

This is a superb CD set. Deller is amazing and the Lute Songs have deep feelings, that send us to immemorial ages... If you love old sacred music you must have this Set.

Rare Soul from one of the greatest Rare Souls.......2002-07-11

Only few soul artists are great songwriters and great performers in their own right. Sam Dees is from this breed and this CD showcases this to full effect. Sam is another one of those rare soul artists who has never got the recognition he deserves, a la Leon Ware, as a performer.
Although many of these tracks are demo recordings, with just Sam, his piano and drums you still get some great soul that is stripped down to the bare essentials, and these tracks are essential. Those in the know and lucky enough will own a copy of his superlative 1975 debut Album on Atlantic 'The Show Must Go On'. 3 tracks from that album are here in different but still excellent versions, namely Good Guys, Come Back Strong, and the immortal Worn Out Broken Heart. Also of note is his heartfelt rendition of Cry To Me, of whom Loleatta Holloway's version is more well known, unsurprising as many of Sam's great tracks have been written for and recorded by others, but few can sing Sam's songs like the man himself. If you're into soul, or if you're not, you need this album and I can bet you'll be on the trail for the follow-up as well scouring the racks for, as Sam says, The Show Must Go On...

The Deller Consort has long been a favorite among lovers of Medieval, Renaissance, and Restoration vocal music, and when it comes to Elizabethan music, no name is more prominent than that of John Dowland, whose "Airs & Partsongs" are now available under the title of Awake Sweet Love [bold] on Vanguard Classics OVC 8112. Here are superlative renditions of 15 tracks of Dowland's vocal output (with a galliard thrown in: you saw two of them danced in the recent film "Elizabeth") sung by the Deller Consort and Alfred Deller himself as soloist. This is not the bawdy, backstreet songs featured on some other recordings but the heightened "art" songs demanded by the court and by the noble houses of the time. The very titles say it all" "Wilt though, unkind, thus leave m?" "In darkness let me dwell," "Flow my tears," and so on. Beautiful as music, fascinating as a look into the past.

Best mellodic rock album of the decade........2007-03-19

I'm an old school metal head with a passion for bands like Rainbow, Alcatrazz, Fastway, Leppard, Whitesnake, Queensryche...you get the picture. As hard as I try, I rarely find any "new" bands that actually impress or move me the way the classics do. Eclipse just took me by storm. In my opinion they have it all, great musicianship (especially the slightly neoclassic meets hair metal shred). The guitar tone is heavy & modern but the vocals will appeal to fans of bands like Journey, Shy, Badlands & the like. There doesn't seem to be much info online about Eclipse and I'm not sure if they're even active at the moment, as this cd is a few years old. Rockers, anthems, ballads, sing alongs...you will not be sorry for buying this if you like the bands I mentioned.

The past decade has been mostly a dry for this classic metal genre but with the emergence of bands like Eclipse, Glyder, Icarus Witch, Wolf & a few others, there seems to be hope for the tide to turn in a pleasurable way.

If I had to pick one fault, I'd say the album cover is the weakest aspect and doesn't really lead one to believe that the music within is this bright, and professional. Reissue with some classic art or photography (the band has the good rock look too) & a flashier, old school logo & you'll swear these guys are ready for the arena.

Powerful Melodic Rock.......2006-09-21

Released in 2003, the appropriately titled Second to None is the sophomore album by Swedish melodic rockers Eclipse. The Swedes seem to have a real knack for making quality melodic rock music, and Eclipse is no exception. The band has a hard hitting yet still melodic sound similar to latter day Europe (on Start from the Dark), TNT (My Religion) and Winger (Pull). It's actually the kind of sound you'd normally expect from a more seasoned band.

Second to None is a very solid album from start to finish, and a hard rocking one at that. The ballads kill the buzz a bit, but they're still pretty good songs. I won't go so far as to call Second to None a must-have album, but fans of Europe, TNT, Shy, and other melodic hard rock acts should be pleased with this Eclipse album.
