5 out of 5 stars Electric Lucifer - Finally Available on CD!.......2007-06-01

Like many people who have recently discovered the music of Bruce Haack, I first learned about Haack after watching the "Haack: The King of Techno" documentary on the Documentary Channel. As a keyboard player myself and someone who has an interest in vintage synthesizer and electronic music technology, the documentary really peaked my interest in Bruce Haack. As such, I've recently bought a number of his albums on CD, although as I've learned, building up a collection of Haack's albums isn't the easiest thing to do, since a majority of his albums are available only as Japanese import CDs and not always readily stocked by US online retailers. When I started seeking out Haack's albums a couple of months ago, I was disappointed to find that "Electric Lucifer" had never been released on CD. However, I was pleasantly surprised to learn shortly thereafter that the album was, in fact, going to be released on CD, so I immediately placed my pre-order through Amazon and received the CD yesterday.

Although I had already heard a few of the "Electric Lucifer" tracks on the "Hush Little Robot" compilation CD, it was great to be able to listen to the original album in its entirety. The record seems to have been touted as somewhat of a concept album where "Powerlove" conquers all evil, although I personally wasn't able to discern any type of distinct storyline throughout the album. Nonetheless, the album is full of original, Haack-esque electronica, which was my main draw to Haack's works in the first place. In terms of the album's electronic music aspect, I find the opening track, "Electric to me Turn", to be one of the most interesting tracks on the albums. Lyrically speaking, I think "Word Game" is a very clever track. As a bonus, this CD also includes a 1970 radio interview with Bruce Haack, a previously unreleased alternate version of "Electric to me Turn", and on top of that, very interesting and extensive liner notes.

For anyone interested in the works of Bruce Haack, I'd highly recommend this album. Kudos to the Omni Recording Corporation for remastering and re-releasing this gem!

Contemporary pop music often deals with its burgeoning past by pretending to ignore it, all the while frantically picking over the debris to cynically reinvent the wheel. But the U.K.'s The Real Tuesday Weld (a.k.a. singer/composer/multi-instrumentalist Stephen Coates) triumphs here by boldly synthesizing a context of intimate '20s and '30s cabaret jazz, then deftly informing it with subtle touches of modern electronica. That it remains much closer in spirit to the former than the latter makes it a compelling, consistently satisfying listen. Taking the form of a mock soundtrack to novelist Glen Duncan's amusingly warm tale of the devil returning to earth for an ill-advised comeback, Coates' cabaret electronique draws on influences as diverse as Django Reinhardt, Serge Gainsbourg, Tom Waits, and Al Bowlly (Coates claims the '30s London crooner inspired him in a dream), TRTW spins breathy, endlessly moody tales of bittersweet romance, all of it informed by a dry, graceful wit. The dizzy, French tongue-tripper "Bathtime in Clerkenwell" quickly became an unlikely Euro club hit; guest performers include the Tiger Lillies' Martyn Jacques ("Someday (Never)"), Pinkie McClure (the cinematic "One More Chance"), and David Guez ("La Bete et La Bete"'s Gallic throwback folk-pop). A lot of unfocused musical ambition gets passed off as cutting-edge post-modernism, but the inviting, time-warped conceit Coates/TRTW have concocted here challenges the very notion of such constraining labels. --Jerry McCulley

Album Description

This modern-day electronic cabaret singer-songwriter, whose given name is Stephen Coates, has crafted a unique new sound, informed by Al Bowlly, Serge Gainsbourg, Ennio Morricone as well as modern electronica. I, Lucifer is the imaginary soundtrack to the best selling novel of the same name by Glen Duncan, about the devil returning to earth for a second shot at repentance and mortality. The enhanced CD features the Sundance Online Film Festival award winning animated video for "Bathtime In Clerkenwell."

In the U.K. where the first album track has been released on 10" vinyl, it has become an unexpected dance floor hit, with people like Coldcut, Groove Armada and Fatboy Slim singing its praises

4 out of 5 stars absolutely fantastic ... .......2007-01-06

it'll make you smile, move and wonder about the man behind the music all at the same time. truely one of the most original music I've heard in a long long time. Unfortunately, I didn't care for his other album.

4 out of 5 stars Return of the Mills Brothers w/ a little Whispering Jack Smith.......2006-04-06

A delightful and silly album, at times playful, at others sardonic (the French and English versions of "The Ugly and the Beautiful" / "La Bete et la belle" are filled with shrewd, ironic, and cuttingly clever remarks of insecure resentment!). Musically, the most fun is the "Bathtime" number. The 1930s samples sound to me primarily drawn from the original Mills Brothers--their early work as syncopated, scat/vocalese experimenters, done in the early 30s. His own breathy, close-mic vocals are reminiscent of Whispering Jack Smith (though he claims Al Bowlly was his hero). Great then, great now. Coates' follow-up album, Return of the Clerkenwell Kid, is also witty and weird, old jazz, pop, electronica, but this has more variety and daring. I hate to see them going for remainder-prices, but it's a good time to buy them both.

4 out of 5 stars Alternative Cabaret.......2004-08-14

The Real Tuesday Weld presents I, Lucifer is alternative cabaret at its goofiest and most entertaining. London-based Stephen Coates, TRTW's braintrust, is Stephin Merritt without remorse (in fairness to Merritt, he doesn't quite have his catalog of Cole Porter melodies, either). This first official release (after a series of EP's) is a kicky romp through the English music hall and is called, in the CD notes, a cycle of "torch songs straight from Hell". It's not all that, but Coates has a way with genre exercises. "(Still) Terminally Ambivalent Over You" could just as easily be eked out on a ukulele as it is played as a blues shuffle (with carousel organ). "The Eternal Seduction of Eve" is spoken-word loungecore; "La Bête et la Belle" pungent French cheese. Best of all is the wordless, though not vocal-less, "Bathtime in Clerkenwell" - three minutes of nonsense that Bobby McFerrin should record on Ecstasy.

4 out of 5 stars Unholy delight.......2004-07-05

"I never really wanted this job. But look at it from my point of view." So says Stephen Londoner Coates, known to the world as the Real Tuesday Weld. Melding electronica with 20's and 30's jazz, he concocts the strangely alluring "I Lucifer." His murmuring vocals and hallucinatory musical style make this a bizarre delight.

Coates starts off in "It's A Dirty Old Job But Somebody's Got To Do It," a reflective, melancholy monologue. Then the melancholy is shed with the infectious jazzy "Bathtime In Clerkenwell" and the angular "(Still) Terminally Ambivalent Over You." It slows down with the soaring "Someday (Never)," and the languid "Easter Parade," followed by the tense "The Life & Times Of The Clerkenwell Kid." It rounds off with the quietly hopeless "Someday (Soon)," and the ethereal, wavering "Pearly Gates."

"I Lucifer" is the imagined soundtrack to Glen Duncan's novel of the same title, about the devil having a second chance on earth, if he can last out a certain time period with no sinning. Story records don't come along too often, but "I Lucifer" works quite well, partly because it's just so fun.

The music is a a seemingly unholy mix of lounge jazz and electronica. But Coates melds them together without a hitch. The joyous scatting, gentle percussion, horns, cymbals, and orchestral choirs are all layered with old fuzz and distortion, which adds to the early 20th century feel of the music. At the same time, he uses electronic backdrops to give it a slightly hallucinatory feel.

Coates' vocals aren't exceptional, as a singer. When he actually sings, as he does in "Someday (Never)," his voice sounds scratchy. But when he murmurs, he sounds seductive and vaguely amused. It fits in with the atmosphere of smoky cabarets and corporeal devils, especially in the opener, where he calmly tells us, "It doesn't matter. You fall... you don't rise again," backed by violins.

He may not be able to really sing, but the Real Tuesday Weld has made a unique experience in his second album. Sepia-tinted jazz is mixed with electronica in "I Lucifer," one of the most original guilty pleasures of 2004.

4 out of 5 stars Loopy, Off-kilter, Nostalgic and Fun.......2004-07-04

I got hooked by the video of "Bathtime in Clerkenwell", a strange silhouette/papercutting/magic lantern animation that seems to have something to do with birds taking over the world. The vocals sound like someone scat-singing through a megaphone. I'd never seen or heard anything quite like it, so intrigued, I played the CD at my local Tower listening station. Wow! This is an incredibly well-done, tongue-in-cheek combination of 30's dance hall music and electronica - it made me smile all the way through. Stephen Coates' many influences have been cited or suggested - everyone from Terry Gilliam to Tom Waits to old-time British performers like Al Bowlly. But I don't think I've heard this loopy a homage to '20's and '30's music since the Bonzo Dog Band - that's what this CD recalls for me. If you want something completely different (Monty Python reference intended), give this unique CD a try.

P.S.: my only quarrel with the CD is that so far, I haven't been able to access the CD-ROM video of "Bathtime in Clerkenwell" - maybe it's just me....

3 out of 5 stars not so bad..but nothing new..........2007-02-04

except the fact that we don't see many groups from their home country, what's the hype that we should get excited by this group? Sepultura started that way and sometimes was blamed by copying Metallica's style, but eventually they did it in their own way.
In their music, I don't see any advances from Bathory. Vocal style is the same, like anything else.
Been there, had before, so boring. Even burning the cross and raping the nun are not creative. Their music video is a joke.

5 out of 5 stars Austrian Black Death barbarians' blasphemous masterpiece!.......2006-12-19

    I totally love these guys!

Never heard of Belphegor? Well prepare for a Metal assault from the depths of Hell like none before!

Their sound combines the blastbeating speed of Marduk and the steamroller heaviness of Abominator, then adds their own unique highly sexually-charged blasphemous twist.

Lead guitarist Helmuth's vocals are perfect. With his thick Germanic accent he sounds like Ahnuld/Conan's possessed barbarian brother.

As others have noted, Belphegor's lyrics are about as subtle as a sledgehammer to the head. -- Which fits them just perfectly. You want flowery lyrics? Go listen to Cradle of Filth. THESE guys are all about pure brutality.

They love incorporating some Latin into their songs as well (--what, you didn't know the language spoken in Hell is Latin?), and in fact the album starts off with the chilling sound of a demon in Hell giving his minions a dire command in Latin. From there on, a look at the song titles and a listen to the clips should convince you that it's pure sacrilege in all its dark glory for the rest of the album. And they like to close their albums with final tracks that sound like unholy hymns, in this case featuring all the denizens of Hell joining in.

I love the "hey look at me, ain't I crazy" lyrics booklet pics of the band posing with knives and guns. They're so over-the-top they're hilarious! Bassist Barth (had to retire from the band in 2006 due to a career-ending accident) seems to have a snake fetish, so the CD's label is covered with writhing snakes, and snakes also figure prominently on the cover. And don't forget the centrefold pic of a couple of X-ian nuns being "intimate". Yeah, they seem to have a real thing for nuns and sexuality (For Amazon customers who share their tastes, check out a book available on Amazon called "The Convent of Hell". -- You'll thank me. ;) ) --Which brings me to another of my favourite things about this album: the BEST~est album cover art EVER, by the incomparable Graal. What can I say? Take a look for yourself and see if you don't agree.

If you can track it down, the limited edition digipack version of this album also features the music video for the title track. -- one I guarantee you won't be seeing on TV anytime soon cuz it features a naughty naked nun doing things at an altar.

This band just seems to get stronger and stronger with every album, but this one (their 4th studio album, released in 2003) is my fave because it has the highest dose of what they do best: their trademark decadent combination of perverse sexuality and religious blasphemy, all wrapped up in a crushingly heavily-armoured Black Death Metal shell that'll run you over like a tank -- a tank driven by unholy barbarians from the wilds of the Alps!

For their latest album (2006's "Pestapokalypse VI"), Belphegor have finally signed with a label willing to back them up all the way, and so they are currently in the midst of their first ever North American tour. I hope this helps to finally give them the wider recognition they so richly deserve and cements their standing among the ranks of the blackest ov the black.

So if you like your Metal heavy, fast and blackened like Marduk, Behemoth, Krisiun or Abominator, I would say you should DEFINITELY check this one out.

4 out of 5 stars Fast, fast, fast.......2005-09-22

Ok, I have officially found a band with faster hyper-blast beats than Marduk. These guys are nuts.

I would honestly buy this just because of the drums, period.

If you like FAST death/black metal, this is a good album. If not, don't even bother.

4 out of 5 stars "Fukk The Blood Of Christ", how can you go wrong with this??.......2005-05-09

This is the band's fourth studio full-length, and is perhaps the fastest record these guys have put out. While the death metal aspect of this band takes more of a back seat than it did in Necrodaimon Terrorsathan for a more black metal-esque sound, it's still a good record that's worth listening to. Hell, it even comes with a videoclip, so you definitely got to get this.

    3 out of 5 stars Decent Black/Death Metal.......2005-03-21

This is my first experience with the highly brutal Belphegor. Belphegor play a hybrid musical style of Black and Death Metal. They play as fast and brutal as any band out there. If you really sit back and listen you will find a bit of melody within the onslaught of violence. A couple of down falls are the lyrics and the noticeable formula to their music. The lyrics are of the more fake and meaningless satanic side. I don't here anything regarding the Religious beliefs of the Church of Satan. I would have to say the replay value is pretty low on this release. While it's entertaining for a few listens, it becomes pretty boring after a while.

Kodály's music can be a lot of fun, and this disc is programmed for maximum entertainment value. The two sets of dances, which should be 20th-century Top 100 classical favorites, are about as entertaining as music is permitted to be, are the excerpts from the singspiel H&@225;ry János (which is Top 100, deservedly), the better- with the lesser-known music interspersed to excellent effect. Fischer adds to the mix three brief choral arrangements of Hungarian folk songs. The two children's choruses sing like angels, and the orchestra plays throughout with a tasty idiomatic quality, snapping the rhythms and emphasizing the imaginative color of the orchestration. If your collection isn't already overloaded with Kodály, this disc will be an excellent addition. --Leslie Gerber

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars One of Fischer's most delightful CDs.......2007-04-21

The classical music world has come to rely upon Ivan Fischer as a one-amn spokesman for Hungarian music as performed by the best of Hungarian musicians. His approach to the whole canon from Liszt to Bartok has brought a native flavor that international conductors can't match. That's certainly ture in this exceptional Kodaly disc, where even the two familiar works, an extended Hary Janos Suite and the Galanta Dances, sound brighter, wittier, and more vivacious than eer before.

Like Copland in this country, whose idiom was sophisticated and yet folk-based, Kodaly's music speaks directly to several flavors of Hungarian culture, and Fischer is able to capture them all. The unfamiliar works here make the program even more savory, with a smattering of folk songs for children's chorus and a longish (11 min.) transcirption of Marossxek Dances written for piano. Yet in was in the impish Hary Janos excerpts that I felt I understood the raucous, piquant hero for the first time, even beyond what Istvan Kertesz gave us thirty years ago in his acclaimed Decca recording of the complete work. It's all quite brilliant.

    5 out of 5 stars A Magical Recording.......2006-10-02

Zoltán Kodály's music is far too seldom played. With recordings such as this one with Ivan Fischer conducting the Budapest Festival Orchestra in some of Kodály most accessible works perhaps that will change. If ever there were a combination of components to offer definitive performances of the works of Zoltán Kodály, they are certainly here. Fischer knows his way around this repertoire and draws some brilliant playing from the Budapest Festival Orchestra.

'Háry János' is a terrific opera, filled with wit and wisdom and overflowing with fine music. The Suite derived from the opera is here presented with six excerpts and the sound is pungent and obeys the exacting rhythms and melodies perfectly. The 'Dances of Galánta' are more frequently included in orchestral programs than the equally fascinating and beautiful 'Dances of Marosszék', and Fischer makes such a fine impression with this latter work that hopefully it will be available in more orchestras' repertoire. Also included are some works for chorus and orchestra, works not familiar to this listener before this recording. There is a joy in Kodály's music that is magnified by the voices of children and these works are irresistible.

This is not only a worthy performance of terrific music, but also the production values are first rate. Highly recommended. Grady Harp, October 06

5 out of 5 stars Kodaly Dances of Golanta, Hartry Janos.......2006-02-25

Excellent recording. I am a professional trombone player and purchased this to review the Harry Janos Suite prior to performing it. I will also be performing the Dances of Golanta next year. Excellent recording with very fine performances. Any one who enjoyes music with an eastern European flavor will enjoy this CD.

5 out of 5 stars Most Exciting Recording Of Kodaly's Music I've Heard.......2001-12-07

Ivan Fischer certainly enhances his reputation as one of the foremost interpreters of Eastern European 19th and 20th Century Classical Music with this exciting set of Kodaly performances, most notably the Hary Janos suite. The Budapest Festival Orchestra gives lively performances replete with Western perfection and Eastern European charm. The children's choruses are equally delightful. The warm, atmospheric sound quality reminds me a lot of classical Philips recordings made in Amsterdam's Concertgebouw concert hall back in the 1970's.

5 out of 5 stars A Kodaly disc of exceptional quality.......2001-02-03

This is a very enticing Kodaly program which includes most of the popular orchestral works. Only the Peacock Variations is missing from the usual canon and instead we are treated to songs that Kodaly wrote for the benefit of children's chorus. However, they are as enjoyable to hear as they must have been stimulating to perform. The singing of this children's choir is a joy, making this inclusion especially welcome. Also included are brief excerpts from the singspiel Hary Janos, some of which will be familiar to those who have heard the Hary Janos Suite. The more familiar orchestral works are given exceptionally vivid, colorful readings. There is scarcely a phrase upon which Fischer and his splendid players fail to shed new light. Fischer gets the best of both worlds from his players: Eastern flair and western-calibre polish. Not to single out any section at the expense of the others but the sound of the wind solos stand out in my mind as being excitingly gypsy-like and full of fantasy. The recorded sound is stereoscopically vivid and atmospheric.

      5 out of 5 stars The Greatest 70s Album You've Never Heard.......2007-02-14

They just don't make records like this anymore. From start to finish, these songs are chock-full of heavy, no-BS guitars laying down awesome riffs. It passes my simple test: the melodies are strong and the guitars are loud. Lead singer John Lawton would go on to greater fame with Uriah Heep, but he absolutely scores here with Lucifer's Friend.

In addition to the Sabbath-influenced guitars, the bass-playing also jumps out here, more so than the organ. Lawton's singing is tremendously powerful throughout. This album passes the following tests with ease:

      The Headphones Test: A+

The "Driving Around In The Car With The CD Cranked" Test: A+++++

Lyrics Test: A solid B just on the strength of "In The Time of Job When Mammon Was A Yippie". But really, who listens to Lucifer's Friend for the lyrics alone?

The "I Realize I'm On The Train, But I Just Gotta Bust Out The Air Guitar for This Solo" Test: A++

I've been listening to this album in tandem with Captain Beyond, Bloodrock, Uriah Heep, Thin Lizzy and Andromeda. Here's how I rank them:

      1. Thin Lizzy, "Fighting"
      2. Uriah Heep, "Demons & Wizards"
      3. Lucifer's Friend, "Lucifer's Friend"
      4. Bloodrock, "Bloodrock 2"
      5. Captain Beyond, "Captain Beyond"
      6. Andromeda, "Andromeda"

A tough group of albums to rank, and a ranking that changes all the time. Safe to say, Lucifer's Friend rules. Let's get to the tracks:

Ride In The Sky -- I knew this album was going to rock hard and rule the planet the minute I heard the trumpet blasting the intro to "The Immigrant Song". A short, quick-and-dirty intro. 8 out of 10.

Everybody's Clown -- Here's where the band gets down to business. This song is a six-minute clinic. The guitar solos come in quick bursts at the beginning, then the band slows it down in the middle for some serious guitar attacks. The bass on here is so awesome, and I never usually notice the bass on tracks like these. 7 out of 10.

Keep Goin' -- A slow, drawn-out jam. The guitars here are heavy and thunderous, and the organ is a great touch. Kind of a bump in the road here, relatively speaking. 6 out of 10.

Toxic Shadows -- Put plain, this is a table-busting jam. It starts and stops in the beginning, but once it takes off this song is a monster. And then it goes on for seven minutes!!!! Heaven. The beginning of the 4-5-6 punch. 10 out of 10.

Free Baby -- Table-Busting Jam, part deux. Can't decide whether THIS is my favorite song (10 out of 10), or whether it's:

Baby You're A Liar -- They have that mid-tempo, Zeppelin-esque heavy beat down to a science. The drums here aren't quite so heavy as Bonham's beats for Zeppelin, but it doesn't matter. The Table-Busting Trilogy concludes with this relatively quick rocker. 10 out of 10.

In The Time of Job When Mammon Was A Yippie -- Somewhat of a comedown from the previous three songs, but not by much. 9 out of 10.

Lucifer's Friend -- The album roars to its all-too-soon end. The great thing is that these songs clock in at an average of six minutes long. The bad thing is that this is the last song. 9 out of 10.

This is simply a criminally overlooked album, especially if you think bands like Wolfmother are cool. In fact, if you're a rocker with any respect for yourself, then you need this album.

      5 out of 5 stars priceless.......2005-12-03

This disc is a must have! LF combines the trippy, jazzy dark side of the band Spirit with heavy guitar riffs, a vocalist who could sing anything (including opera), and occultic lyrics! The band is tight and right on the money, and John Lawton as vocalist is hard to surpass. It's quite a shame that LF got so little exposure over the years. If you like Spirit, Uriah Heep, early Judas Priest, etc. you'll love this disc.

5 out of 5 stars The Cover Sets the Atmosphere!.......2005-10-20

As the title suggests, the cover sets the atmosphere for this keyboard laden example of 70's heavy rock. I love this album! A friend in Spain turned me on to this and I've had years of pleasure from it.

To me, this band did what Uriah Heep could have done if they'd gone a little darker. I just wish their subsequent albums could have done the same, however I have several and they do not match up to the original. In the eighties, their singer went on to play with Uriah Heep so there is a tie in here.

Each song is like an extended jam with words. That is the only way I can describe it. However, the songs are not really extended jams. They just have a heaviness, a darkness, and technical quality that gives that impression. The combination of vocals, keyboards and guitar add up to one of the best albums of the era.

Give yourself a treat and seek this out. You will not be disappointed!

      5 out of 5 stars A 70s Heavy Rock Blitz.......2005-07-20

If u like your music heavy, hard, sludgy, grungy, proggy, druggy, or whatever then get this CD. LF are one the best 70s bands, sounding like no one else, and they broke new ground along w/Sabbath, Heep, Birth Control, Hawkwind. They feature an uncompromising sound: vicious guitar mingling w/the ballsy Hammond organ sound, along w/psychedelic, cultic lyrics sung by Mr. John Lawton, later of Uriah Heep. Like when Glenn Hughes joined Deep Purple from Trapeze, Lawton never quite sung w/Heep like he did w/LF....check out "In the Time of Job..."

Of course if u like this one, check out the rest of LF and hunt down the pre-LF band Asterix (1970). It's rare but solid and features most of LF...including Lawton.

4 out of 5 stars Bit Of A Guilty Pleasure But..........2005-01-19

Please don't take that to mean this isn't a great record or I don't love it (because I certainly do). I listened to it again earlier tonight for the first time in ages (I have the original Billingsgate vinyl; aren't I cool- ha ha ha) and it still sounds great after all these years. Don't let the band name or sinister-looking cover artwork fool you; this is kinda proto-metal in a way, but most of the lyrical content is about motorcycles (the opening "Ride In the Sky") and such like. And Lucifer's Friend just because they're playing rock 'n roll, ostensibly the devil's music (and 'cause these fellas speak decidedly Gernanized English; little wonder, being German and all). Probably a bit of a proto-Ronnie James Dio thing going on with the vocals too; the aforementioned "Ride In the Sky" begins the album with a "metal" scream- but please remember that it was recorded way back in 1970! If you're into Motorhead sorta stuff or (God help you) "nu metal," give Lucifer's Friend a shot; you might even really like them. Oh, and I believe most of those bonus tracks are from their third LP, I'm Just A Rock 'N Roll Singer (and at least one is from the fourth- ?!- the equally excellent but totally different Banquet). Yeah...

5 out of 5 stars You've got to be kidding me?????.......2007-07-19

All nine songs on this death metal masterpiece will shred your head, not to mention the killer bonus disc full of rare tracks every Drawn And Quartered fan should have. Track six is entitled, Sodomy and Heresy, and the real heresy, in my opinion, is that this has been out almost a month and there are no reviews for it on here??? These guys have the most evil sound in all of death metal right now. The last time I heard anything that really freaked me out the way these dudes play, was WAY back when Morbid Angel released Blessed Are The Sick. If you thought Hail Infernal Darkeness was way beyond the abyss, wait till you here this. It sounds like the soundtrack to the end of the world with satan on lead vocals. These guys are heavy, technical, and as mentioned before, have an evil sound that I doubt will be matched any time soon. Get this!!!!

4 out of 5 stars NATURAL BORN MOVER.......2002-03-20

Of the seven albums I own by Lucifer's Friend, I deem this to be their closest attempt at commercial success. Not to contradict the Editor supplying info for the release, but this was originally released on Janus Records in the U.S.A.. For those of you unfamiliar with the band the members include John Lawton[vocals], Peter Hesslein[guitar/percussion], Peter Hecht[keyboards], Dieter Horns[bass], Herbert Bornholdt[drums/percussion], Karl-Hermann Luer[sax/flute/violin/clarinet], and Curt Cress[drums].

The bands earlier works are compared to the Stones, Deep Purple, Zepplin, and Uriah Heep. I really don't see any of those comparisons, except for Uriah Heep, but that was only after Lawton left the band to join Uriah Heep! The familiarity to me is the lyrics and singing, but that's Lawton. He has a powerful voice that other than this disc is best showcased on FIREFLY by Uriah Heep. The music can best be descibed as experimental with a strong rock flavor.

The songs are moody at times and the best songs are "Natural Born Mover" and "Blind Boy", which are also my favorites. They are also the most rock influenced songs on the disc with the exception of "Moonshine Rider", which is also a very good song. The other songs that warrant several listenings are "Broken Toys" and "Free Hooker". This is an excellent release and I recommend it to those looking for something a little different that breaks the rules a bit. Other good releases by Lucifer's Friend include I'M JUST A ROCK & ROLL SINGER, WHEN GROUPIES KILLED THE BLUES, and SNEAK ME IN, which has a much harder flavor to it.

4 out of 5 stars This is a great cd, similar to Uriah Heep!.......2000-01-13

Anything with John Lawton will be compared to his work with Uriah Heep, however I believe this album by Lucifer's Friend to be the most simliar to Heep in terms of songwriting, sound, and heaviness. A really classic CD. Also see "Where the Groupies Killed the Blues" 1972.

5 out of 5 stars a trip to the dark side.......2006-04-06

Lucifer's Friend are an intense pleasure! It's a shame their cds are out of print in the US. This, their 2nd album is a little more jazzy than their first, and I was probably thinking more of this one when I made the reference to Spirit in my review of their first album. There is also a flavor of HP Lovecraft in the mix, as well as Autosalvage (Peter Hesslein's almost garage/punk rythm playing). Hesslein's lead, in contrast, is complex and sophisticated. This album should certainly be listened to several times before judging it. There is alot to absorb that casual listening won't bring out. There is a dark atmosphere here, but this is, in my opinion, alot more than just occult laced rock. This is some very talented people making music, and they weren't content to remake their 1st album over and over as some fans would've liked. The 1st one is priceless, I'll grant you that, but this one (and the next few) has it's own place. The playing is as good as any one and the vocals are as good as it gets. Listen to Mother and then dig out Judas Priest's 1st two albums (their best 2 in my book)and listen to the vocals on the slower numbers. This is a fantastic disc, and if you shop around, you can find this at a more reasonable price. If you want heavy metal, lucifer's Friend isn't it. They rock hard when they want to, but calling them heavy metal isn't accurate (and even less so in the case of Black Widow). Lucifer's Friend is a melting pot of musical styles and influences that they churn out into their own sound. Their discs only get better with time, as you hear something new with each listen. Truley great music always has something new to offer, no matter how many times you've heard it. I don't think Hobo sounds a bit like Zeppelin. It's kind of popish jazz similar to what LF would do on future records. This album stands by itself, and I hope those who want something a little different find this disc. It's worth the time.

5 out of 5 stars Sophisticated Hard Prog.......2004-12-21

This is a dark, complex album that takes a couple of listens to grow on you. This band had great talent and style. Originally released on the legendary Vertigo label. John Lawton's voice is fantastic and seems to be an unspoken influence on both Bruce Dickenson and King Diamond. This is only one small part of the band's appeal, however. There is some truly sophisticated playing and arranging here that makes each listen a fascinating pleasure.

4 out of 5 stars where the band showed how to blues.......2000-07-07

This CD was the first record of LF I happened to hear. The music represented is classical progressive rock of the 70's with all those keyboards, violins and stuff. The groups to be compared are King Crimson, Uriah Heep, Atomic Rooster. The song HOBO is more than a bit like Led Zeppelin's "Immigrant Song" though the rest of the musical content is highly professional and unique. Such songs as "Where the Grouppies Killed the Blues", "Mother" and "Burnig Ships" can without any doubt be called progressive-rock classics. Marvellous singing of John Lawton (later the member of Uriah Heep), Zappa-styled solos of the guitarist Peter Hesslein, strange bass sounds and crazy rythms of drums made me the fan of the band. So, you may need some time to understand this record but if you do -- you won't regret.
