A wonderful quirky little band from Estonia that sounds like a mix between My Bloody Valentine and Stereolab. You can check out their videos on youtube and purchase their albums and EPs at tonevendor (@ $5 & $11 respectively). Don't pay for the heavily priced imports here. You'll thank me later.

Album Description

"In Solarium" is the second album from Pia Fraus. It was recorded during three weeks in July 2001 by Lauri Liivak (of Estonian band Bizarre) at his Forwards Studio in Tartu, Estonia. It sees the band reaching new heights of sonic texture. The band's six members utilize a bevy of instruments including farfisa organ, synthesizers, "noise", two vocalists, bass, drums, and of course those wonderful guitars. Their songs have a remarkable sense of melody that'll be stuck in your head for ages. The layers upon layers of guitars, keyboards, and boy/girl vocals put you in a different place - a land of daydreams and bright colors. It's pop. It's noisy. It's brilliant. Absolutely gorgeous two-tone silver and burgundy design throughout this package will have your eyes drooling. As with all Clairecords releases, the first pressing of this album will have limited edition artwork.

Four stars granted on the strength of "Outskirts of Me," a lazy, ambling, but ultimately rewarding marriage of MVB and Stereolab that I've featured regularly in DJ sets and mixtapes for a couple years now. I truly hope these folks are still at it in Tartu.

My Bloody Valentine..........2003-01-29

...10 years later. Not quite as good as MBV, but Valentine's one of my favorite bands ever, so it's not fair. However, if you liked the shoegazers of the UK circa early 90s, you should enjoy this. Poppy melodies, shimmering distortion, boy-girl vocals, plus Stereolab-like keyboards make this dreamfest stick in your head. The way I see it, since Kevin hasn't come out with an album since Loveless (and he's not going to), this will keep fans of MBV satisfied for a while. Oh yeah, they're Estonian, but they sing in English (not that you can discern the vocals, but they're printed on the sleeve).
